  2. 100 dhs to anyone on carnity who can find an engine I built that was bad, rattles, grenaded itself, whatever. I work to the book, I don’t bodge things, scam people, make misdiagnoses, charge for work that didn’t need to be done unlike many mechanics in uae, no names dropped. I’d also like to throw this out there, Black engine oil doesn’t necessarily mean it’s cleaning the engine. A well maintained engine shouldn’t be so full of contaminants that it turns the oil black over 1,000 km or less. More often than not, it’s cheap, crappy low grade oil which turns black because it can’t handle the heat and burns and breaks down, thus not protecting the engine. There’s a little thing in chemistry called oxidisation, maybe worth reading up on. Then there’s also the issues of whatever additives are in the oil which will also break down and turn dark over time. If the oil is black instead of dark brown come service time, there’s a good chance the wrong oil was put in, ie not to manufacturer specs. Failing that, maybe it’s time to take a look at your rings and bores.

  3. I have tried the 315 on my old patrol, and from what I found that any tire in the 16/17" wheel size above 275 is LT, so they are heavier. This I feel saps power from the engine, also puts more stress on the driveline. Another I use my current y61 patrol for dunes and wadi/mountains as far as Oman. Once you leave Dubai/Sharjah/Abu Dhabi to find a replacement in anything above 275 is next to impossible....so you are out in Oman, and have 2 punctures, you can use your spare, if you had the brains to put on the same size tyre, but the 2nd tyre can not be replaced. I do believe that a lighter weight is better than an extra 1-2cm width, note that the 285 have an extra few plys on the sidewalls, so one needs to deflate more, which has it's own issues too. with the 275 I am down to 12 in the front and 10 at the back, and then adjust lower if needed after driving for 30 minutes.

  4. Yep, because all the molecules are the same size, which means that all the molecules in the oil share the load equally- which is not the case with even the best mineral oil.

  5. Yes looks very dry. Here is an interesting study on various oil brands.... http://www.xs11.com/xs11-info/xs11-info/articles/51-consumer-reportstruth-motor-oils-july-1996.html And some more observations from us company that specialises in oil analysis for industrial and retail customer. ://www.google.ae/amp/amp.timeinc.net/thedrive/the-hammer/12762/10000-sample-study-on-motor-oil-supports-what-consumer-reports-concluded-a-decade-ago%3fsource=dam

  6. That is true, this is akin to complaining that when I wash my greasy hands the water in the sink is getting black! Ignoring the fact all that blackness was washed away from my hands meaning the soap is doing its job.

  7. When the tyre pops off the rim, it's going to spin around a bit. Even a few degrees from what it was, it's going to be out of balance anyway, sand or no sand inside because the weights on the rim don't correspond to the original position on the tyre any more. I have never put loose sand inside a tyre so I don't know, I used sand bags. But I think the above explanation works.

  8. Depends on the ECU. Some store everything, some lose it when you do a quick disconnect and reconnect.

  9. For small car tyres, its easiest just to use hammer on or stick on weights. I can't comment too much on the beads. I've never used them personally but I have seen people using them and they seem to work fine. When I was driving articulated trucks, we used small sandbags inside the tyre to balance them and it worked perfectly. A truck tyre is so big and will be naturally unbalanced and the amount of weights you would have to stick on the rim would make it dangerous if they decided to fly off. Ive also used the bubble type balancers in a shop I worked in before. They are ok if it's all you have, but it has to be set up on proper level ground and the wheel has to be properly centered. It's easy to make a mistake with them if you don't know what you're doing and set a wheel badly off balance. I much prefer the electronic machines, especially the modern ones that will check for runout and flat spots. Less margin for error but then again, it's all down to the operator.

  10. Well OD off actually means it will not shift to last gear no matter what, if your speed at 120 with 4/5 gear RPM stays at 2.5-3k rpm then with OD off it will jump to 4-5k rpm as now your using 3/4 gear for reaching 120 kmph speed. Apart from above main function as it says OD (Overdrive gear) Off, it also delays the shift and that's what you are actually looking for. For making Adaptive system learn, I think you drive in auto and hit the throttle hard and try to cause the delay in shifting by late throttle release as if you are racing all the time for a day or two and see if that make adaptive system learn that you are a shumarker and not Anand, lol.

  12. So I did an oil change at Fineway today....price on the 5W-30 gone up!!! Today I had to pay AED294.00 with 8 litres of Enoc 5W-30 and an original filter. They cleaned the air filter and topped up windscreen washer, with water....I will just squirt some dishwasher soap in there later. They are happy for me to bring my own oil/filter and they charge me AED60 for the labour to do so, so not bad....I can do this at home, but I always create a mess and then disposing the oil is another chore by dumping it at the petrol station oil change catches.

  13. OMG you guys are still on for this debate without understanding the base logic that there is no variables in the scenario means it's the same car, same owner, same usage, same CLEAN engine, well-taken care since 5+ years - ENOC / ADNOC oil gets dark in 1000 kms and Mobil / Castrol / Shell get dark with its age of up to 5000 - 7000 kms.
