My first cars were all second hand Germans. Still young and wanted to be cool, all my money went into these money pits. But no responsibility yet, so I could justify it. Then I decided to change my career and went back to study again. My Golf mk3 TDI gave it up and I needed something to transport myself. I couldn’t afford a car so I continued on my Honda CB. (Also in Dutch Winter). The first car I bought then, was a Daihatsu Cuore 3cylinder. Small ugly car, but it did the job. When I had to do some maintenance one day, came the moment of realization of the price difference to maintain. After my Daihatsu I “upgraded” myself with a Honda civic. Till today still best and cheapest car I’ve owned. This made me stick to the Asian brands.

Personally I don’t listen to any music while off-roading, especially when it gets a bit extreme. I came to the conclusion that it might be dangerous because unconsciously you try to follow the rhythm and the mood of the music while driving, when actually you should follow the rythm of the dunes. Maybe it will sound weird but that’s how I feel it.

It’s amazing how all you guys thought that I was serious about listening to Celine Dion while dune bashing😂 I actually listen to music while off-roading and keep the volume low( so that I can hear the radio alerts as well) especially when I’m driving alone and I even have 2 dedicated playlists for off-roading - ones trance( chicane, ATB, Armin van burren, DJ tiesto, Ministry of Sound, Eric Prydz etc) and the other one is Metal/heavy rock( Metallica, Iron Maiden, AC DC, deep purple, GNR etc)

I like the sounds that my car is producing while I working with it. Not only the engine but as well the suspension, gears, driveshaft and sand that goes over/in it. I tried to drive with music, it is nice to surf over the dunes when I am alone and there is nobody around me, but it has a big disadvantage, you can’t hear the surrounding, so also no other traffic. With the group I want to keep my attention to the radio. If I would have a system to connect my 2 way radio to the audio system of the car and it would dim the audio of the music when somebody is transmitting on the frequency, then I would certainly listen to music during the newbie drives. (Yes, this exist) So what do I listen, Bob Marley, Audioslave, Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder. Giorgio Moroder??? Few people will frown their eyebrows. I like classical music, but during a road trip it is just not doing it for me. Giorgio Moroder is the electrical variant of classical music. For the unknown;

Same here, no music when i am offroading with the club because 462.887 is too important not to hear. But on my way to the meeting points and on the daily commute my music is always on. @Xaf Giorgio Moroder is great. Also Kraftwerk is quite relaxing to drive with.

@Xaf that is more than diplomatic. Makes sense to me.

Because this is public I have to be diplomatic with what I write. I am not an engineer, nor a specialist in avionics. As you remember, the beginning of the gsm, when your phone was close to a speaker and somebody was calling you, or your phone was roaming, we could hear the typical zoom. This is simply an interference. Nowadays we don’t hear it anymore. I am not sure if it is the hardware of our mobile phones that has changed with time or that a different frequency is used that doesn’t interfere with our electrical equipment. To avoid any interference that time with any instruments, may it be the speakers of the plane, tv screens, or avionics from the flightdeck, companies restricted and forbid the use of a cellphone during the whole flight. Nowadays there is no interference anymore. Different companies have different rules and you should follow what they ask you to do. The reason why they do this, is all from a regulation and insurance perspective. So the nice looking cabin crew who ask you gently to switch off your phone during taxiing has a valid reason for this, this is her/his job to do. Some companies have satcom connection and you can actually switch on your whole phone, not only the wifi but also your roaming and you can make a phone call. Your mobile provider will charge you for this. Nothing will happen with any of the systems on board when a phone is on during cruise. Why do they still ask to switch your phone to flight mode during take off and landing? A reason is that this is a phase of flight were the crew needs your attention, to pay attention to the security instructions or other important information.

I too like @Gaurav bhai like to concentrate on the drive and surronding sights and sounds. When I'm on my way to the meeting point or driving back home I like to hear peppy Bollywood numbers. Exception to the rule is if I'm feeling sleepy driving back home, I continue to use my radio to chat with @Gaurav bhai or @Srikumar to keep me awake.

After being almost ran over by some Super Safari gangsters again, my wife wanted to call the police recently to file a complaint but she didn't have any details or license plate number. Which brings me to the question: * Are Dashcams allowed in UAE ? * And can the footage be used in court or legalle when sending to the police ? Not sharing footage online of course because that would be a direct invasion against privacy laws.

I remember reading an article in gulf news that stated it was OK as long as the footage is not posted on social media and can only be used to show the police in case of an accident. Not sure about recording someone on the street breaking the law when no accident involved, that gets classed as invasion of privacy. @MisterPoet you are welcome but you have to wetsand with 3000 grit paper, that is what will restore the shine. The 2000 basically removes the oxidation and leaves the surface rough, the 3000 will smoothen it out and give the gloss. You should be able to get it at any hardware store.

Before going this route, download Dubai Police App and check these two services and see if you can directly report such idiots through the app: Police Eye (under Save People Life category) We Are All Police (under Traffic Services category) Second option you can remember the plate number, car and location and report to Dubai Police over the non-emergency phone number for reckless driving. They really call back the driver and give verbal warning. I received this call once, when local girl behind me flashing me and I was unable to change lane, as soon as I reached office I got a call and explained my side to the cops. If you really want solid proof from Dash cam, I think you are allowed to record and use for police evidence only, still double check and get the same in writing for your protection. Btw, don't buy the dash cam, take it from me as I have one - almost never used.

Totally agree. See the thing is i don't mind others seeking their thrills and adrenaline, as long as they are not risking other people's lives while doing that. I live on Al Qudra road and multiple times per week my wife or me are being tailgated or almost run off the road by these Super Safari driving knobheads that have absolutely zero brains in their heads and do not have any respect for their own of other peoples lives. The racing on that road and the rev limiter noises just go on ALL night ALL the winter time. Both the MIRA community and Townsquare have launched a common Whatsapp group that calls the authorities constantly to get them to do something. I'll be buying a dashcam soon and sending footage over to the authorities. It's sickening that we're sometimes arriving home with shaky legs and a heartbeat of 180 because of this.

Exactly thats why you mostly see diesel light vehicles from european manufacturers if not only European today. Even Japanese major car manufacturers have stopped production of diesel engine light vehicles. American manufacturers AFAIK never offered diesel variants other than some trucks and pickups with third party engines like Cummins. I wonder how a diesel mustang or Cadillac would drive Americans tried jet engined cars but they weren't very practical Although Leno does have another jet engine car and bike.

Guys, the only reason why Diesel engines are performing so well, is that the diesel engine was, with highlight to was (due to the law changes in europe) the best selling variant of the model because of the price of diesel. So companies started to develop the diesel engines to meet the performance of the petrol. Just imagine all the whistles and bells of a modern diesel in all petrol engines. In 1890 there was already an electric car with benz in 1885 having a combustion engine powered car. It was the lobby of oil companies that made our life dependent on oil. Diesel engines have a higher compression ratio, more torque at a lower rpm, so ideal for big engines like tanks, boats, generators, busses, trucks. The lifetime and durability of an diesel engine is in general longer the a petrol, but the design and production is more expensive then a petrol. I can continue and continue about different engines, jet engines, les rotating parts compared with a combustion engine, thats why we want them in a plane. Low maintenance, durability, but super expensive. But to come back, a simple diesel engine without a turbo vs a petrol engine in a car? I know which one I’ll choose.

Next time when you visit europe try to rent 520d or better 530d. They are good enough to be in a luxury car. If i am not mistaking there more diesel luxury cars than petrol in europe. At least in Turkey far more diesel. Not all diesels making horrible noise. I used to have 3.0 CRD Grand Cherokee i was opening window to hear sound of V6.

There is a reason why diesel cars are not as popular in places where petrol is cheap. N.America, GCC, Some African and South American countries etc etc. P.S : I have nothing against diesels. I wish there were more here. I'd instantly get a VW polo with almost a 1000 kms on one tank of fuel. But for anything comfort, luxury, sporty, enthusiastic driving or weekend roller. May fav music while offroading - Radio Channel - 462887. I enjoy driving in peace, so I can enjoy the roar of my and other engines and plus keep a solid ear on car and surrounding noises + radio comm. After drive, while relaxing I do love any type of music - mostly dance numbers and sometime soft songs.

By the way it is tested 320d is faster than 320i. If I am not mistaken 320d 190hp and 320i 170hp.

Did not say it was faster, i said it was fast compared to any standard 2L Petrol, you can't really compare it like that its all due to setup. Apples vs Pears..... But today most manufacturers that have both diesel and petrol option for a specific model set the cars up to be the same(top-speed, acceleration and handling), but the diesel will consume less fuel.

So a 2L diesel engine is faster than a 2L petrol engine. Oy vey where is the facepalm emoji when you need it!

In general since i came to the UAE, and it might be having something to do with the climate, is that i love to listen to Americana, Country, and 70's Rock. Some examples: - Wilco - Steely Dan - Eagles - Fleetwood Mac - Johnny Cash - America - Doobie Brothers - CCR - Boz Scaggs - Little River Band On a late Thursday evening on that horrible commute home, Guns 'n Roses, AC/DC, Billy Idol, Bruce Springsteen, and other more "energetic stuff" comes on the list, just to shake off the stressfull week.

Very well documented @Frederic. Very descriptive but for some it takes time to perfect the technique, take your time and remember safety is paramount.

I want the filter do be able to clean the a it a bit (will be using carbon filter) as filter is user both when recirculating and when taking outside air. The dirt and debris that get stuck in the filter should be stuck in the filter as it other will go in to the cabin. As for the construction of the pajero water should not get there as the filter is located over the fan and fan motor and if water gets in there it will get in to the fan and ruin that. So the basics is to reduce fumes and dust when in queues

Well done @Frederic for taking so much time to share this great off-road knowledge. Very well explained and documented with perfect diagrams and videos. Only thing I like to add for all new offroaders, learn and follow above instructions to the max but never fight the gravity. If you had a bad feeling for any side sloping, criss crossing attempt, exit safely and make another attempt rather than fighting the gravity. Small deviation of track can also cause lot of difficulty and push the car to the soft patch, in that case simply accept the defeat and exit down without fighting with mother nature. Even experienced offroader do have refusal and repeat without any hesitation, that's the real fun and challenge of offroading.
