    As Gaurav said above, I have a big military bag with everything in the bag (multiple compartments, yes also the jack). I always secured it with bungie ropes (or how do you call these things) up to last week when I made a big jump. I realised that it might be not strong enough if you start rolling or in worse case scenario a forward flip. Don't underestimate the g-forces that occurs during an accident. (Imagine your jack flying on to your head) After this incident, I bought tie down straps and secure the bag firmly. Yes, it takes more time to secure, but we are talking about your life.

    Hi @Frederic and @Vanessa8580. Thanks a lot for the support and efforts u guys put in the drive . Although it was my first off road drive, I felt so comfortable coz from the beginning when some of the cars in the convoy got stuck u were there with complete energy to pull it out . That incident itself reduced my worries abt getting stuck . It was a such wonderful experience riding with you and all others and hope to join u soon in some upcoming events.

    So you have decided to become an Offroad Enthusiast by either joining an Offroad-Club, or becoming a Solo Adventurer to explore the UAE deserts ? Then surely the time has come to start investing in the proper offroad gear. Good quality offroad gear will be your biggest help to be self-reliant and to enjoy this sport thoroughly. After all you don't want to be stranded in the middle of the desert with unsafe or unreliable equipment. We have compiled a list of essential tools you should have as per our club levels, and included some recommended gear which we have used in the club with good results. OFF-ROAD FLAG (NEWBIE AND ABOVE) A proper off-road flag is safely mounted with a bracket, or suction cup, and does not fall off on the first windy day. You can either buy a very decent flag like the AOR ones, or go to the nearest dune-buggy shop, or Dragon Mart. A fishing rod with flag also does the job. TYRE DEFLATOR AND PRESSURE GAUGE (NEWBIE AND ABOVE) Deflating your tyres will be a weekly practice, and the accuracy of your tyre-pressure gauge will make the difference between struggling in the sand or floating on it. You can buy them in ACE, Speedex, or Dragon Mart and it is advisable to buy two different models to double-check the accuracy. Most cheaper models work well on normal tyre pressures (35 psi) but start to give inaccurate readings below 15psi. Deflating your tyres can be done with a stem removal tool or a quick deflator. Whatever works for you. How to deflate your tyres is well documented here: FULL-SIZE SHOVEL (NEWBIE AND ABOVE) Next to your Carnity buddies, a proper shovel will be your best friend in the desert.You should get a full-size laborer shovel, and not a small foldable camping spoon/shovel. Buy a shovel with a handle, and a v-shaped tip, you will find them in general hardware shops. Example below is perfect, and will allow you to displace a lot of sand. TWO WAY RADIO (NEWBIE AND ABOVE) While driving with an offroad-club, a two-way radio is essential to communicate with the rest of the convoy and to receive instructions or guidance. In Carnity Off-Road Club, we use two-way UHF radios that are programmable to our frequency list that we have created. Make sure your radio is always fully charged for every drive, and if possible invest in having a second (spare) one. We can recommend the Crony/Motorola MT777 or the Baofeng UV5-R model as both are good radios with excellent price/quality ratio. You will find them in Dragon Mart. Do not buy a walkie talkie without a display, as these will be mostly pre-programmed and the frequencies cannot be changed unless you purchase programming software and cables. NOTE: THE BAOFENG 888 RADIOS THAT WE HAND OUT AS SPARE RADIOS WILL NOT WORK OUT OF THE BOX WHEN YOU BUY THEM AS THEY HAVE DIFFERENT FREQUENCIES. YOU CAN PROGRAM THEM BUT YOU WILL NEED PROGRAMMING CABLE, A LAPTOP, AND SOFTWARE CALLED CHIRP. IF YOU ARE NOT INTO THESE TECHNICAL THINGS, PLEASE STICK WITH BUYING THE CRONY/MOTOROLA MT777 or BAOFENG UV5R AS THESE CAN BE EASILY PROGRAMMED YOURSELF WITHOUT CABLES OR SOFTWARE. Instructions on how to program the Motorola/Crony and Baofeng you will find in below post: FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND MEDICAL KIT (NEWBIE AND ABOVE) Both items every vehicle should have, offroad or onroad. You will find DRY POWDER extinguishers at the petrol station or hardware shops, and a medical first aid kit at general hardware stores or pharmacies. Make sure they are immediately accessible in case urgently needed. 12V AIR COMPRESSOR (NEWBIE AND ABOVE) After every offroad drive you will need to re-inflate your tyres. If you are lucky to be nearby a petrol station you can slowly drive your way up there, but in many cases you will be miles away from one. You will find air compressors from 150 up to 2500AED as per your budget and liking, but if you are using it on a weekly basis you will find that sticking with a well-known brand like TJM, Bushranger, ARB really makes the difference. You can be lucky with the Camel branded compressors in Dragon Mart too, but do not expected any warranty on them. ACE, Speedex has the branded ones, and also a few cheaper options. GPS DEVICE (INTERMEDIATE AND ABOVE) From a dedicated GPS device such as the Garmin 276cx, or a smartphone with your favorite navigation app, it will be important from Intermediate level onwards that you start practicing navigation, putting waypoints, entry and exit points, and seeing the difference on your map between for example long range dunes and small technical dunes. Apps like MotionX for IOS, MyTrails, and GaiaGPS are very popular and allow you to properly prepare for your route / track beforehand. RECOVERY ROPE WITH 2 SOFT SHACKLES (INTERMEDIATE AND ABOVE) Recovering stuck vehicles in the desert is a skill, and from Intermediate level onwards you will be able to practice this. There are different types of ropes in the market, and finding the right one might be very confusing. - A Polyester Tow Rope is meant to tow a vehicle on the road, NEVER for off-road recovery. These are the basic tow ropes you will find at the petrol station. - A Webbing Sling is a Polyester rope that you can buy in hardware stores and is meant for industrial lifting, but can also be used as tow rope in specific cases (to re-direct a stuck vehicle with gentle tugs). This material does not stretch. - A Snatch rope (flat) or Kinetic Recovery Rope (round) is a rope made of Nylon that allows to stretch for about 20%, and is extremely useful for offroad recovery as the stretching creates a kinetic energy and the recoil effect helps in recovering vehicles stuck in the sand. When choosing a kinetic recovery rope, you should select a rope that has a breaking strength of 2-3 times the weight of the vehicle you will recover. For example; if you recover a Nissan Xterra which weighs 2 ton, the breaking strength of the rope should be at least 6 tons. Most recovery ropes have 10-15 Tons breaking strength. The reason for this is that the forces involved when a vehicle is completely stuck in the sand are far higher. Our club uses both the Viking Kinetic rope as well as the AOR Kinetic recovery rope with excellent results. The Viking rope costs about 350AED with a bag and 2 soft shackles included, while the AOR kinetic rope costs about 390AED without soft shackles. (AOR soft shackle cost 155 AED per piece). A shackle is a device that allows you to connect your rope to your tow point. These used to be mostly rated metal D-shackles, but nowadays the soft shackles, that were well known in the sailing world have become in offroading too. A soft shackle will be safer to use as the less metal involved the better during recoveries. More information on using these Kinetic recovery ropes and shackles can be found in below post: FLOOR JACK WITH WOODEN BOARD (ADVANCE AND ABOVE) A hydraulic floor jack in combination with a strong wooden board will allow you to safely lift a vehicle in the desert to replace a tyre or fix a pop-out. We do not advise using scissor jacks or bottle jacks, as these are only acceptable for on-road and will topple over in the sand or possibly even on a wooden board. A good hydraulic floor jack should be at least 2T capacity and a swivel neck (rotating handle) will allow you to put it further underneath the vehicle and still be able to lift it. JZX or YATO has good hydraulic jacks. Do not buy the cheapest one available as the consequences or risks when the floor jack collapses could be very serious. A strong wooden board should be at least 1 1/2 inches thick and made of natural wood and not MDF or plywood. A good example is scaffolding planks. It should be large enough to fit your hydraulic jack on it. TOOLKIT AND FLUIDS (ADVANCE OFF-ROADERS) A toolkit will come in handy for a multitude of reasons, in case a vehicle breaks down, to fix a loose exhaust, flag, or bumper, but can make you a hero if you are able to fix your vehicle instead of leaving it behind in the desert. Following items are recommended: A small basic multimeter, set of spanners up to size 24, some adjustable spanners, a hacksaw, hammer, set of screwdrivers, some electrical tape, duct tape, cable-ties, some spare car fuses, spare valves and stems, tie down straps, socket wrench set and some pliers. Also a tyre repair kit will be coming in handy, together with some thick gloves, and battery boost cables. Following fluids are recommended: - Engine oil: 1-2 liter - Coolant: 1-2 liter - ATF Transmission oil: 1 liter - A can of WD40 or penetrating oil - Spray-can with water to cool down an overheating engine.

Pictures are self explanatory whole spring nut and ring bolt set with washer (3AED per set) Steps Final after tightening These can be used in any car which has these kind of rails in the cargo trunk. You can use as many as you want to make it more secure and modular.

    Hi Avi, if your prado is less than 5 years old, then it's better to let Al Futtaim answer this issue in warranty. If it's more than 5 years then you can approach Dynatrade or Autotrust kind of branded shop for getting the work done properly. Also research more on this issue more with your model year as in some vehicle especially Range Rover this is typical known issue of a failing solenoid after certain age. It's fairly simple job to buy a new solenoid for 600-700 dhs and get it replaced from your trusted mechanic.

    thank you @Rahimdad for the topic of what went wrong. thank you all by each ones name who commented on the threads which I tried my best to see it all over the week end. for me it was so useful and life is a learning process indeed. watching others incidents and analyze it from different angels is one of best tools to sharpen the growing experience . that’s why I suggested previously if at all possible to document our drives in Carnity to the best we can in a way that the seniors in Carnity see it better.     @Ale Vallecchi today’s drive was fantastic and the happy face of all of us at the exit point is the testimonial of the same I guess. Thank you so much for making us practice ridge crossing at safer dunes and especially with your live commentary, feels much more confident now to practice this further. Needless to say, the convoy management was very good today, thanks to @Chaitanya D @Rinelle Sanaani @Febin Frederic and I feel they share great sync in communication. @Ale Vallecchi overall this was my best drive so far and I would say this till I have the next best drive with you 😁😉 maybe next Friday ? 😉

    NIGHT AND DAY - PINK ROCK EXTENDED This time every driver's maniacal punctuality allowed us to start the day....with a night drive. With the cover of the dark we snuck into the dunes leading to Pink Rock's nothern base, and easily climbed its saddle, just in time to enjoy the first hints of dawn. From there we proceeded, skirting Fennec Cave, all around the rock, in a south-westerly direction, toward the beautiful range of sand bowls and low ridges that makes up the plateau betweem our starting point and Big Red. The terrain, and the quality of the drivers, allowed us to practice all off-roading skills: streight crossing, side sloping, and the rudiment of criss-crossing. Eventually, as everybody got more comfortable, we pushed the level up, and by the time we exited, the convoy had managed to ride in and out of the lower Big Red's bowls in good form, driving smoothly , crossing over the last 3 bowls without stucks. Great job by @Chaitanya D, executing flawlessly his first Second Lead. Very good contribution by @Rinelle Sanaani in his first Center Forward position (good recovery of Islam's GMC). Also perfect job by @Febin Frederic, also in his first Sweep, keeping the convoy together, and managing its flow when some refusals demanded directing the traffic. Special mention to @Islam Soliman for the impressive handling of his "beast": after the first challanging ridge, you never looked back, and managed a perfect ride. Very good drive, cool and collected, by the "younger" off-roaders (@Tero Vallas, @muzamil hussain, @Biju Abdul and @Gregory Perkin) as well as the more experienced ones (@Anish S and @Shiju Manuel) one could see all of you gaining in self-confidence, improving at each crossing, managing the last, more fast paced ones at Big Red, with good precision and control. Well done. By 9AM we had managed to drive for 3:35 hours and 38.4Km, at an average speed of 11Km/h (20 Km/h while moving), with a maximum speed of 58Km/h, and a total of 608 meters climbed.     Honestly and without reading the further comments I wanna give it a try of what I think first : it seemed as it’s a “ pull to flip “ rather than pull/ tug to recover 🤔 second : the recovery car and the FJC both going against gravity ( for the FJC it’s obvious , and for the Pagero what got it worse is the recovery rop from the middle was elevated by small ground hump acting like a pulley with upward direction of about 30 degree and together with the rope angle it’s plus 60 toward left ( already the FJC was stuck in a tilt right up ) third : non kinetic rope fourth : no sand clearance fifth : both vehicles needed to be redirected for better recovery sixth : rear tug abit could save all day by permitting more distance in front of FJC to later go forward using created slop momentum Seventh : if its me as a newbie I would feel comfortable to do what I am not sure of and I will ask for advice if alone ( I will not go alone off course ) or seek advice from others more experience in the group

    DRIVE REPORT Some days go better than other days, and today was a day where the going got a bit tough... I was glad to see everyone meeting on time, and most brought deflation tools and pressure gauge and were self-reliant in the deflating process. @Derek Fernandes I am sorry to hear you ended up at the wrong deflation point (for evening drive). In the future I will leave my mobile number on the pre-drive briefing drive topic so you can call in case there are any issues. Please always double check which drive topic you open as we have many drives every weekend, and maybe this caused the confusion. @Bhaskar as a proud new owner of this Montero Sport was my second lead today, and did really well. My apologies for the long waiting times. I hope you got to enjoy the scenery at least a bit @Athula Dharmadada your Pathfinder was a bit stubborn today, but you kept a smile and shovel handy, and your son took amazing photos. Near the end we had to dismantle the bumper but I am glad to see the shop was able to put it back on. Please do some trials with the traction control settings, as I am sure they were switched off, yet the car refused to rev beyond 1500 rpm which eventually led to pulling you back up to the dirt track. @Ameen Ahmed your Landrover Discovery Sport is a fantastic vehicle and you really drove well today. As we spoke about please bear in mind that these vehicles are very expensive to fix in case you'd ever lose a bumper or more. We have seen other members joining with same car, and most of them left the car home eventually and bought a cheaper dedicated offroad-toy for ease of mind. @izzumonv Your Jeep Liberty was not feeling it today, after first having smoke from underneath the hood because of the expansion bottle cap that fell off / flew off, and then refused to go in Reverse, and I felt sometimes the 4low gear was also disengaging without any reason. I would highly advise you to bring it to a competent mechanic and get these things sorted before coming back on your next offroad drive. As you have seen a 4x4 is being stressed to the limits during summer in the sand. Hope you can get things sorted and the recovery truck brought you back home safely. @Shaaz Sha congrats with being the first member with an Omani License plate You handled the terrain really well today and never heard or seen you struggle. Super done ! @Dineth Kalukapuge your Xterra is a very powerful car, and I am sure in a couple of weeks you will get the trick on how to use the momentum and steering a little bit better. But overall well done ! @Rizwan Waheed with the Pajero never broke a sweat and handled the terrain like he has done it before. Very impressive for a first drive ! @Vanessa8580 was my trusty sweep and we both burned quite a few calories. Having your life partner on your drive to help out is truly a blessing as we understand each other without words. As I have mentioned during the de-briefing this is really a team-sport and we never leave anyone behind in the desert. I am thankful for your patience and this drive was an example on how unforgiving the desert can be sometimes.     @Chaitanya D I hadn’t paid attention to the fact that average and total speed were the same on your photo. I usually use moving speed on my gps, indeed. @Kalahari you’re right it wasn´t a very difficult area for leading but you maintained a good pace, which is impressive since it was your first lead.

Thanks for allowing me a short taste of leading in an easy part - it certainly brought much more appreciation for the leaders that lead convoys every weekend across multiple sandy trails!!     My guess he was trying to do a jump but a proper jump like in below video. To do that he needs a suspension system matches to the purpose and proper training. Also of course you have to know what is behind the dune. Note for everyone i am sure all of you aware but never ever try this. I wont end well.

    Thanks @Rahimdad for creating this wonderful thread and always adding new incidents to discuss and let newbie learn the offroad accident reasons. Hope now newbies realize that we always insist on doing small U-TURN on your first sideys so you can learn how your vehicle reacts on the slope and you can learn to countersteer immediately if car fishtail and about to flip.

    At one point his wheels are completely turned while he goes full throttle. That created the breakout which he could not correct or rectify anymore. More power comes with more risk and more skills required !

    Seems like that driver wants to avoid that guy in front by going a little right and then entered the slip face and then while steering left and up he fought the gravity on soft patch resulting in a flip. However, the driver reaction after the flip tells another story: Either he is too happy to be alive Or did it on purpose (i doubt) Anyways lesson for bystanders that never come in between the path when someone is doing sideys (side sloping) as you never know what counter-action driver take in a spur of the moment which may result in a hazardous outcome.

    Thank you @Gaurav and @skumar83 for you views. Both of you have got it right. I have once before seen similar flip in Faqa area with a fellow offroader. The main culprit is the Jeep's Center of gravity is very high due to the lift and no spacers to even out the lift. Sometimes people buy fully modded Jeeps but with no experience in handling such a ride. The more experienced people normally judge the person by this highly modded vehicle and accept people for drives beyond their capacity. Judging by the speed and the way he approached the ridge cutting it is evident that he does not have such experience. This further endorses the grading structure we have introduced for people to better understand the importance of joining their level drives.

    Very valued points already mentioned, here is my take on such unique flip "ON THE CREST" that I have never seen before. His speed was way too fast to do the criss-cross on that ridge. Seems like experienced but a new driver with this much-lifted (8-10 inch) vehicle that is more prone to flips, or he may be new to sand entirely to judge the way how this tall ride react to such situations. He turned little early and sharply on the right side, instead, he should have gone a straight little bit, ride the ridge and gently steer right to do the transition from where earlier tracks have been shown. Even with the slightest lift before the flip, if he could have steer left immediately he could have avoided the flip and got stuck on the crest, with this much-lifted vehicle he could have self-recovered very easily. So getting stuck or refusal is way better than flip or a roll. While the flip was happening (00:03 - 00:06), he has left the gas and could have avoided this flip to a certain degree if he kept on flooring the pedal. He has given gas after the flip (00:06 - 00:08), pretty much useless in that angle.

    My view: 1. The car never reached the top of the ridge in order to cross over. I always feel that its important to ride the ridge a bit before crossing. 2. While crossing the rear of the car fish tailed causing the car to slide on the left side and then he was in a situation where the car was fighting gravity. Once the vehicle direction had turned 90 degree, it was always going to flip with the momentum. 3. Possible since the sand was churned up in the area his left front wheel got stuck which aggravated the problem of flipping. Bottom line, dont fight gravity...you might escape sometimes but not all the time.
