  1. Good morning Desert Fewbies, @Kailas, @Lisa Pemberton, @Tamas Hoffmann, @Islam Soliman, @Jeandre Bezuidenhout, @Mehmet Volga, @luwaimn, @Lorenzo Candelpergher, @Vineeth John Joseph, @Jorge Stepniak Felippe, @Jeepie, (reserve list: @Jun Zamora, @Miguel Ibarbia, @Hennie Schoeman, @Sreejith Sreenivasan) For some of you, this will be our first Fewbie drive together, for some, we already ventured out into the sand before. @Lorenzo Candelpergher and @Mehmet Volga had the 'ignominious' pleasure of attending the last Lisali adventure - so have an idea of the potential perils of this area as well as the potential fun, when we get it right. Not many Fewbie drives start in Lisali because there is a treacherous, technical set of dunes that must be crossed before we hit the incredible wide high dunes hidden behind. The rewards, once we pass the technical dunes are the ability to drive all the way from Lisali to the long dunes of Qudra, time and convoy permitting. The landscape is stunning, and unlike so many of the areas we drive at the moment, has little in the way of vegetation, so we can enjoy a fast pace and high sweeping dunes where we can practice slide sloping and criss crossing to our hearts' content all the way to Solar Park and beyond. It is my hope that we can use this drive to practice and hone some dune crossing techniques. We will remind you that straight up and over is still an option as well as looking at ways to practice some criss crossing and ridge riding. Those technical dunes - if we get it right, we are all over them quickly and without too much drama (Lorenzo and Mehmet, I have a new tried and tested route through so do not worry we are going the same way), but I do want to stress that learning how to navigate through technical dunes is an incredibly important skill in 4x4 driving. We will not always have easy tracks and wide dunes in which to play. Which translates to, if we do get stuck, then fine, we will find our way out and you will get valuable lessons on an important skill. As ever, there will be more updates during the week on what to expect and the convoy make up. Finally, a request made on behalf of the 4 people sitting in the waiting list: If you are not coming to the drive, let us know early so that the club members whose fingers or mouse was not as quick as yours, can get a drive. See you soon in the sand.

  2. Dear Desertnauts. Sorry for keeping you waiting a little longer for the drive's preview. This information will be very important for you to align yourselves with the spirit of this outing. Here are a few important facts to consider while preparing for the day. THIS IS AN EXPLORATION DRIVE - It means we will follow a track that is not well known (although we'll cross several tracks used by local farmers and herders), and will have to be patient with possible re-directions, or overcoming of unforeseen obstacles. The idea is to find a route from the sea to the mountains, even though we will not actually reach the latter with this first drive (that's good news as there should be a follow up to reach our goal). THE TERRAIN IS EXTREMELY DIFFERENT FROM OPEN SAND DUNES - We start the drive virtually on the sea (just off Barracuda Beach Resort in RAK), and will reach the interior, where E311 and E611 almost merge. At the beginning of the drive the vegetation will be extremely rich, thick and green. It will be mostly composed of low bushes and crawling plants, which will cover the sandy ground almost completely. We will be forced to find our way through this low "jungle". These bushes, feeding off the salty water seeping from the shore and rising up close to the ground, will start to recede as we'll proceed inland, to leave room to more sporadic low vegetation, and groups of thorny trees forming small forests. This is when we'll start encountering some sand dunes, getting progressively wider and taller, but always requiring a very technical approach (not the usual "bowls" we are used to finding in Badayer, Pink Rock or Qudra areas). THE SKILLS REQUIRED WILL BE QUITE TECHNICAL - As mentioned above, the uncertainty of the track ahead, and the presence of vegetation for most of the drive, will require that we mentally switch from a higher speed, sharp hedged, smooth sailing Intermediate drive to a slower pace, finesse oriented, controlled mode. We will have to change approach based on each obstacle (or lack of), and will need to use the cars' power for short bursts, when needed, rather than for prolonged climbs or rides. THE AVERAGE SPEED OF THE DRIVE WILL BE SLOW - We expect to cover approximately 40 Km, and should take around 3:30 hours, for an average speed of 10Km/h. The normal speed of an Intermediate drive on open sand is closer to 30 Km/h. So be prepared to proceed at a crawling pace: put on some relaxing music and enjoy ! The idea of this drive, besides looking for new areas to visit, is also to provide a glimpse into, and an opportunity to train, the full set of skills that are required from a complete, all-around, off-roader. This will certainly be a "premiere" drive which will require spirit of adventure and patience at the same time. Something different on the Carnity buffet. @Desert Dweller, @Najeeb Mohammed, @Kalahari, @Chaitanya D, @Rinelle Sanaani, @Pancho, @Febin Frederic welcome to this new menu. @Srikumar and @Wrangeld thank you for bringing your experience to the table. More final information to follow soon. Enjoy your week.

  3. Massive thanks to @Gaurav @Srikumar @Frederic @Emmanuel @Ale Vallecchi @Wrangeld and @Rahimdad - while you guys were born Fewbie +, I am proof that an old dog can still learn a few new tricks! Thank you for your weekly dedication and patience with the exponentially growing number of community members - I can assure you, this is appreciated by all of us. Indeed, the desert keeps one humble - as I learnt after getting stuck once my tires have been inflated at the inflation point - after a RECOVERY training drive!!!!! Thankfully my fellow X-man @Chaitanya D was there to spare me the agony of deflating again... Thanks to my regular driving buddies @Chaitanya D @Tbone @Rinelle Sanaani @Najeeb Mohammed @Febin Frederic and @J J - while we may share a lot of banter, we all learn a lot from each other every week.

  5. Absolutely worth the drive, and fully agree with @Ale Vallecchi that this is a perfect training ground to become a more complete offroader. While this terrain looks easy at first sight, it will surprise you with its complexity and you will need to keep focused and be in complete control of the throttle pedal. Too much will make you hit stuff, not enough will get you stuck on the soft patches. For all who likes 'exploring' GO FOR IT !

  6. Thanks, I saw that 1 spot open up for a moment but didn't want to jump the queue. (Very glad I didn't because I myself get extremely frustrated when people do that to me...) Anyway, let's see what happens before the weekend. Otherwise I'll ride shotgun with one of my friends! Not missing any chance to get sandy in this beautiful weather!!

  7. Mr. @Shiju Manuel from the first drives at Carnity where you were a little tentative to seeing you scale the heights and slopes in recent weeks, the development in your driving has been fantastic to watch. I am delighted for you that you reached this level within Carnity, which is totally deserved. I look forward to watching your continued development and growth in the club and driving with you on many more drives. This is a really pleasing promotion.

  8. Relearn process is nothing to worry about. Plug the computer in, hit the throttle relearn button and follow the instructions on screen. Only takes a couple of minutes. Have you pulled the intake pipe off and looked inside the throttle body to see if it actually needs cleaning? Other than that, you need to go for a drive with the computer plugged in and monitor the live data to see what’s going on. Being scientific and methodical goes a long way towards diagnosis rather than reckoning.

  9. Dear Carnity Desertnauts. As is my habit, before each drive I'd like to outline the nature of the area that we'll be visiting, and to provide some info about what to expect from the outing. This time we'll be driving through the so called Bab al Shams quadrant of the Qudra basin: this is the south-western part of the Qudra sand dunes, closest to the famous resort. The terrain here should be ideal for a Newbie drive, through gentle white sand dunes, occasionally rising to a low altitude (this is one of the lowest points of Dubai's emirate), coming in long waves, separated from each other by short stretches of open sabkhas. We will be able to practice side sloping, safely crossing the long range dunes, and will slowly increase the pace and challanges (in a safe manner), depending on the convoy's response. From the nature's point of view, we will be passing by several feeding stations for gazelles and oryxes, and should be able to catch glimpses of some of these animals. Along the route there may be occasional areas with some low bushy vegetation, and certainly some low thorny trees. We will pass by a few basins with low formations of dry clay mud. @Andrei, @Hardik Mody, @Hatim Patharia, @Vijaysekhar, @Arun Mathew, @Onlyjunaid and @Shaaz Sha welcome to the drive. More news and isntructions will follow closer to the drive's date. Enjoy your week.

  10. This drive is organized in full compliance with the COVID19 guidelines. We expect every member that joins this drive to go through below information and strictly follow these guidelines in order not to jeopardize someone's health, and to ensure we can keep organizing these drives safely. MUST READ AND TOTALLY AGREE: COVID19 Precautions MUST READ AND TOTALLY AGREE: BAN POST Two Way Radio Guidelines Every Offroader brings his own radio, programmed to the frequencies described in below advice topic. We will not share spare radios or program your radio on the drive. If you need assistance in programming the radio, post a topic on the Carnity website with your questions and we will help you out. Make sure your radio is fully charged. It will be your only way of communication while driving. Before buying, please carefully read below advice so you are informed properly on which model / cost / shops... No radio = No drive. It is an essential tool and you should make sure you bring it on every drive and learn/practice how to use it. Drive Details Level: Intermediate and above When: 12 Sep 2020, Saturday Meeting time: 3:30 PM (SHARP - Without any exceptions) Action Plan: IMPORTANT NOTICE - This is an exploration drive, in a little travelled area for off-roaders, on very technical terrain. The pace will be slow, and the skills required will be finesse and control, due to the need to pick the right path through an environment full of vegetation (shrubs first, then trees), with sporadic animal farms, and sets of sand dunes with very little room to maneuver. Differently from the higher speed, bowl swirling rides, we usually do at this level, this drive will test a completely different set of skills. Nonetheless, it will provide a good opportunity to increase your off-roading abilities, making you a more complete desert driver. Meeting Point: https://goo.gl/maps/v57xx8M2HVkbDqqj8 in front of Emirates Motorplex Type of Car: Any proper 4x4 with front and back tow hooks and 8-10 inches of ground clearance. What to bring along: Loads of water, snacks (for yourself), face mask, rubber gloves, enthusiasm and willingness to learn. Approximate finish time: 07:30 PM THIS IS A COMPRESSOR ONLY DRIVE. WE WILL END THE DRIVE AT A POINT WHICH IS NOT CLOSE TO AN AIR LINE. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A COMPRESSOR, PLEASE DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS DRIVE. IF YOU ARRIVE AND HAVE NO COMPRESSOR YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO JOIN THE DRIVE. LIMITED SPOTS AVAILABLE: Limited to 8 Intermediate and above drivers. RSVP will close on Thursday - 9 AM. If the RSVP is full and you wish to join, please mention your name on the drive thread to add on the waiting list. Latecomers will be returned back - without ANY EXCEPTIONS. Members without RSVP will be returned back - without ANY EXCEPTIONS. Please withdraw your RSVP, if you aren't joining, so your spot can be taken by others. Repeated no-show members after RSVP will have their account suspended for a month. PLEASE RSVP ON THE BELOW CALENDAR

  14. Gents, Not sure what the procedure here is, and definitely do not want to grab the first opening if it belongs to someone else. Do we take newly opened spots according to the waiting list numbers, or fastest finger first? I'm going to check back in 5, if it's not taken, I'm going for it...

  15. Congratulations @asifk - now you're really going to have to work out how to use that manual option on the Pajero: but there's no doubt that your performance in the drives and how you are constantly looking for ways to help people out when in trouble demonstrates just how deserving you are of this elevation in level at Carnity. I am looking forward to many more opportunities to drive with you in the coming months.

  16. You can also do the relearn process manually, as you can see here: Also did you check the spark plugs?

  19. Actually, the cheapest place is Al Hamra Cellar, in Alhamra Village. At least 30% cheaper than the 3 providers in RAK area. Certainly! And as we come as an indivisible pack, @Foxtrot Oscar will be there too 😁

  40. With the tremendous increase in the number of COVID cases in the UAE, we all have to be responsible while off-roading. Failing to abide by any single precaution at any time during the drive, will result in an immediate ban from Carnity Off-road Club. ZERO TOLERANCE First offender - 1 Month Ban. Second offender - 3 Month Ban. Third offender - lifetime ban and report to authorities. COVID19 PRECAUTIONS 2.0 All Carnity off-road drives will be LIMITED to driving only: No Socializing and gathering allowed at any time. No break for taking photos, breakfast, smoking, etc. No exchanging of off-road or recovery gears. Wear a mask at all times, while outside your vehicle. For passengers restrictions, follow RTA or NCEMA guidelines. All passengers should be inside the car, at all times. Maintain a minimum of 2-meter social distance at all times. Sanitize your hands and recovery gear after use. PS1. If you and your passenger cannot sit inside your vehicle for 3-4 hours please DO NOT JOIN CARNITY DRIVES. PS2. A Member who has RSVP the drive is RESPONSIBLE and LIABLE for their passenger's compliance. PS3. The above precautions apply to everyone irrespective of their vaccination status or schedule. PS4. You can confidentially submit the photo of any offender by sending an email to [email protected]. How to comply Read the drive post before arriving at the meeting point, so that you know your convoy numbering and radio channel. Arrive at the meeting point and switch on your radio to the pre-set frequency of the drive. Stop your vehicle at least 10-20 meters away from each other. Deflate your tires, while wearing a mask, and then go back inside your car. All briefings will be done on the radio now, so pay full attention to a briefing for your own safety. After the briefing, fall in your convoy position just before the drive starts. While driving if you get stuck, announce on the radio and be inside your car at all times. Trip lead and/or support will guide you on the radio for self-recovery or tow-rope recovery. While there is a stuck or a refusal, everyone else supposed to be inside their car at all times. You can only take a bio-break during the drive, by requesting trip lead permission. Once the drive is over exit out to inflate by maintaining 10-20 meters distance from each other. While inflating, only the driver supposed to be out and with the face mask at all times. After the drive, you can talk on the radio for any feedback, suggestions or help you need.
