  2. The entrance to the meeting place was flooded. Seemed like the water from the great rain did not subside. We struggled a bit to enter to the meeting point. We moved a bit ahead of the meeting point to deflate. The weather was pleasantly chilly at about 20 degrees C. As we entered into the desert it was obvious that the water puddles were from a recent rain event. There has been no off-roading activity in this area for at least since the rain a day or two before and only met one convoy of 2 TJs during our entire drive. We were climbing dunes from standstill like a turbo charged v8 Y61 with 1000 bhp could do; so, it was quite fun to do what we did and then we overdid. By about an hour into the drive, I felt I was tried. The cars could do everything we were trying out, but we were mentally getting tired as it takes a lot of mental effort to those delicate climbs on very narrow paths. So, we decided to do some technical drive back and that's what we did. We did not utter the word "Refusal" even once. There was a refusal, but there was no utterance of the word. An excellent drive by @Batuhan Kulac on hi JK. I was very pleased with him wherever he was driving in the convoy. @Anoop Nair is a seasoned hand at it and loved the noise @Imteeaz was making with his VTC. Thank you all for joining this drive, see you soon once again.

  4. Hi Zubair, Congrats on your new drive. The Expedition is a definitely a fun car to drive for a newbie level and hoping it will be more exciting in Fewbie and higher levels. It is not advisable to install a kill switch if the car is still under warranty and service of the dealer as the would generally void the warranty. For the airbags the relay switch is under the driver seat. It is a yellow connection and can be located without much effort. The lock is a 2 fold red color lock. If you remove this yellow connection before your the start of the drive then the airbags should not work and you will get a warning symbol in your instrument cluster. Further please ensure to drive in sand mode with 4H configuration. Please do let us know which trim is your expedition?

  5. Hi @Zubail, it’s highly recommended to disable airbags in American SUVs as specially the side curtain airbags are very sensitive and can deploy by mistake when your are doing sideys mistaking it for an accident. The fuse box under the hood is usually where these fuses will be hosted and also usually there is a diagram in the cover of that fuse box with all details. If not, you need to check with your garage and they should be able to point out the relevant 1 or 2 fuses to disable the airbags and you can take them out before the drive while deflating and then put them back in while inflating by end of the drive. Also check which fuses will kill the traction control and ABS and do the same. If you want more convenience and willing to spend a couple of hundreds, the garage can install kills switches for the same so you avoid the process of taking out the fuses and putting them back each drive.

  10. With all the enjoyable drives with carnity this was definitely goes on the list of ones to remember. @Ale Vallecchi never ceases to amaze with the lead drive route and ridging techniques. Higher dunes in Nahil are always fun that pristine route and was definitely easy to be at the sweep with this group everyone had great skills.

  13. Hi @Zubail in my vehicle, the "baja mode" changes the roll rate at which side airbags are activated. essentially they are turned off when I engage this mode (or at least made very insenstive to the roll rates). Best bet would be to contact Al-Tayer / Premier Motors and ask their advice, unfortunately I have no knowledge about the expedition.

  14. Just to clarify the real concern, every American brand need to disable the side airbags aka curtain airbags, as they deploy on side sloping and crisscrossing the dune very quickly. One should "not disable" the main airbags, as they are meant to keep you safe, in case of a real accident. Please speak to Ford to find a solution to just disable side airbags, they must be well aware of these incidents.

  15. Yes, this is the yellow connection plug which needs to unplugged. The red button is the lock that will need to be first pulled and then pressed to unplug the yellow connection. This will disable the airbags completely. However, being a newbie myself I haven’t had a fellow passenger on my off road drives and I believe the airbags module is completely switched off after removing the driver side yellow plug. You can try seating someone in the passenger seat, buckled in and check if the passenger airbags ON light switches on the top sunroof instrument cluster. Let me know how it goes.

  18. Hi @Ale Vallecchi @Luke K P @Aser and anyone who is interested. A brief history of my Grandfather Alexander Melvill and his involvement with the LRDG. After Schooling in South Africa he studied mine surveying and started work in the deep gold mines near Springs. After an accident where his entire crew was lost, he missed it as one of his men had left my Grandfathers plumb bob behind and he went to retrieve it. He left the mine and started work in topographic mapping, A few years later he went up to then Northern Rhodesia and worked on the Copper mines, once the Great Depression hit re was retrenched and with his pay out flew up to then Tanganika to try his luck. Here he worked on a gold mine as a mine surveyor and then did topographic mapping along the western border and into what is now the DRC. In 1936 he returned to South Africa, worked on power station construction and then as a topographic surveyor. During this time he met my Grandmother. After the outbreak of the War he volunteered and left his wife and two young boys on the family farm in South Africa. He was 1st stationed in East Africa but not long after was transferred to the 8th Army in North Africa, he was officially part of the 46 Survey group. After studying astral navigation, using a theodolite to observe the stars and give precise position coordinates, he was seconded to the LRDG. There are two missions that I have been told about in his time with the LRDG. Near Buerat in Libya he led a small group of men to obtain ground control of an area so that it could be mapped and to confirm the info received from aerial photographs. For this operation he received the Military Medal from General Montgomery. Just prior to the battle of El Alamein he mapped a route through the Qatara depression, in an area that was only accessible by using the LRDG expertise. In addition to mapping a route for the main army they surveyed enemy positions prior to the main battle of El Alamein. After the War he returned to South Africa worked as a miner, surveyor and farmer. Signed Recomendation.pdf
