2010 Ford Escape review

The Escape is Ford’s entry-level SUV, aimed at those looking at a compact SUV that is convenient for city driving and can handle a bit of the rough too.

In 2008, Ford introduced a majorly revised Escape that gained a more masculine exterior inspired by its bigger siblings, the Explorer and the Expedition.

The big chrome grille, squared headlights, chunky front bumper and flared wheel arches give the Escape a purposeful look.

The new generation Escape also got a revised interior and new powertrain options, which made it a competent compact SUV at its price point. The 2010 Escape continues in its 2009 form except for some new features like Ford’s MyKey (a programmable key that can be programmed to limit speeds for individual users such as children) as well as rear-view camera, park assist and an integrated spotter mirror for improved blind spot viewing.

While the Escape looks like a traditional, truck-based SUV it isn’t quite cut out for off-roading. In the Middle East only one engine, a 3.0-litre V6 with 240bhp powers the Escape. It is mated to six-speed automatic transmission and comes with front-wheel drive as standard while full time all-wheel drive is optional.

Being a compact SUV the Escape is roomy on the inside and affords a commanding view thanks to the high seating position. The cabin is well laid out and built but appears a tad dated in comparison to Ford’s Flex and Edge crossovers.

Available in two trim levels, XLS and XLT the Escape comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, illuminated remote entry, power door locks, windows and mirrors, rear floor air ducts and a CD/MP3 audio system as standard.

The XLT packs in more equipment including automatic headlamps, fog lamps, leather steering, compass and outside temperature display, power driver’s seat, keyless entry pad, roof rails and an auto dimming rear view mirror.
