WOW.. Thanks @Gaurav, @Rahimdad, @Emmanuel for all the support and encouragement at the drives and the endless amount of effort you'll put into every drive. Still remember my first drive with Carnity, it did not feel like I was meeting all of you for the first time and by the end of the drive I said to myself, this is not a offroad community or club it's an offroad family and that has kept me coming back for the drives. @Frederic if I'm not wrong L200 and Hilux cannot be registered for private use and only registered for companies. Isuzu, super duper rare. All German 4x4 from Touareg, Q7, Cayenne are delicate darling for regular offroad use. They are good for occasional beach trip or khawaneej level dunes, but not for regular dune bashing. @edouard I have added Discovery, LR3, Range Rover in the list. Thanks for the suggestion I have also added Nissan Patrol and Land Cruiser - "so-called" king of the desert @Praveenmp thanks for Nativa suggestion, but I have driven the same in the past and due to a 3.0-liter engine on LWB heavy chassis it's slightly underpowered for regular dune bashing and struggles a lot on cross tracks, soft sand, and long climbs.

I was riding Mitsubishi nativa v6 -3ltr I have done few drives and it sounds good and cheaper... hope not much for maintenance

In my personnel experience Jeep Commander is very powerful beast but expensive to maintain. Keep away. The LR Discovery 2 is a good option, but not a climber and missing central difflock unlike the Discovery 1. Toureg is fancy, but I have only seen one in the desert and after breaking a 40K bumper in a newbie drive was never seen again.

Really well done @Emmanuel, it was an effort to keep up with you pace. But at the same time highly recommend the effort As reading the dunes to perfection at this speed is not an easy task. Looking forward to many more drives in your leadership. It's a proud moment for us when somebody raises their hand and says I'd like to lead, followed by a drive like this. Well done.

Nice topic ! i think you’ve covered 95% of them, maybe except for a few rare models such as Isuzu Trooper which I was looking for a while back. But like you say, finding the good condition rare ones cost money and lots of luck and efforts. How would a Hilux or L200 manage ? Probably somewhat underpowered and in need of some extra clearance? VW Touareg 2005 is also going pretty cheap. No idea how it would go in the dunes.

You paid 2500 for 2 shocks? What were they made of? It costed me 480 dhms to replace my front shocks with protection of which 390 dhms was for material and balance for labor.

Indeed. I’ve been on a few off road drives and I see what happens. I’ve seen weekend warriors sticking their head underneath a car that’s only supported by a trolley jack on a plank in the sand. I cannot stress how not cool this is. An extra plank and an extra axle stand should be part of the standard off road kit but I’ve never seen this advertised in any off-road clubs kit. You might get away with it, you might not. A cracked skull with a bit of brain matter squishing through through your broken head isn’t cool. I’ve seen it in real life This kind of stuff does and will happen. My first job in UAE was in a garage in Sharjah. Standard crappy garage. The jack was leaking oil. The owner told me to jack the car up and see why it wasn’t shifting gears. I said no way, your jack is leaking. I stuck a stand under the car and jacked it up. The jack collapsed and the stand saved my life. I survived because I put a jack stand under the car. Other than than I would have been replaceable, just order a new mechanic on dubizzle. Bad shit can and will happen. Never get underneath an unsupported car.

A tear in the intake pipe will cause a power issue too because the engine is using unmetered air, ie air that enters the engine but hasn’t travelled through and been measured by the airflow meter, therefore the ECU will send a wrong signal to the fuel system.

@Rahimdad You said you had some good insight on shops to do the rear bumper guard, can you please post a tip or too please. Im located in Tecom/Barsha in Dubai but can travel so that's no issue. Just whant to find a place that knows what they are doing and that understand a bit of English...

Remember you are talking about 10 years old car in either case and being a German luxury segment expect a high maintenance cost on both vehicles. That's why you are getting at 1/10 of its face value. I was in similar research a few years back and Cayenne better reliability wins as per online research. Then I start seeing few X5 and Cayenne and saw the repair bills from owners that outweigh the Cayenne option hands down. It was based on 5-6 cars viewing for X5 and Cayenne in Dubai. X5 all owner had several sheets of bills from AGMC during the warranty and just after the warranty period, whereas Cayenne owners had very little repair bills. I myself had 2006 Cayenne Turbo from 2012 till 2015 and the only thing I remember spending for repair was one of the headlight cornering light failed, that forced me to change whole left side headlight unit. It was maintained at Nabooda throughout and if I remember correctly cost approx. 2000 for minor service and 4000 for major service. I think these service rates are pretty standard for most of luxury SUV in the UAE, as I'm paying a similar rate for my Range Rover now.

As @Srikumar has pointed out and most people do, just remove the rear middle part of the bumper which is the culprit and you will be fine to go @Per A

Congratulations @Emmanuel for your first lead with Carnity Offroad Club. Leading an intermediate level drive from Pyramids to Iftar Bowl yesterday was totally amazing. At no point, we felt that it was your first lead and your choice of dunes, sideys, and climbs was brilliant. It was like a Velociraptor chase from Jurassic Park movie, where they first time experiences the run in the wild.

Thanks for the drive yesterday! It was very fun, well organized and thanks to @Rahimdad,@Srikumar, @Emmanuel & @hossein for all the tips and help. Can't wait for next time, remove my ASC fuse and light the Christmas tree on my dashboard again !!

It was a beautiful day out. Everyone was on time and after our introduction to off road driving we started off. It was a very nice drive with all participants doing very well till about the last part just before reaching Pink Rocks. As the convoy had split at start, we met up back on the base of Pink Rocks. We settled down to share some snacks, breakfast and some cold drinks. At this point part of the group headed back out, while the rest of us decided to continue. This part was slightly tougher than the first part but everybody was up to the task and with minor refusals we made it to the mosque in time for the Friday prayers. At this point it was time to test out @Emmanuel lead potential. He was heading in the right direction. Thoroughly enjoyed his lead and headed out with total satisfaction. Thanks to all participants. Hi @Per A, this is a Newbie drive and it's not expected that you have any gear. Just you and your 4x4, with a full tank of petrol should be good enough.

Second vote for KYB. I’ve been using them for 20 years and I give preference to them over manufacturer branded shocks. Unless we’re going into more expensive stuff, then I would recommend Koni Gas Adjustables, totally pointless for every day driving though. KYB is same quality as dealer but better price. Kayaba is a well established brand who know what they are doing. If you’re driving on tarmac, go for the KYB Gas filled shocks. Little bit more expensive (not much) than oil filled, but the ride is so much better. The only downside is that gas shocks wear out a little bit faster than oil filled shocks but we’re not talking about much. 60-70k for gas shocks versus 70-80k for oil filled so in the grand scheme of things for long term use, it’s nothing. A few extra dirhams for your comfort every day is totally worth it. Also, change the top mounts if you are changing the shocks. It costs money but it isn’t too expensive. If you have to pay for a second set of labour, 10, 15, 20k down the line, it will cost more.
