in our search to have a decent GPS app to guide us in the desert, today i wanted to review and compare MotionX and Gaia GPS, which are both apps specifically tailored to Off-Road driving or hiking. As i had an old Samsung Note 5 laying around which had a very big screen, i decided to use that phone and mount it in my car to use it as a dedicated GPS. Unfortunately when i found out that MotionX is only for IOS platforms, i was forced to look for something else and stumbled upon Gaia GPS. In the Youtube tutorial below, this gentleman makes a great comparison and it's worth having a look at: As a summary, i come to the following: MotionX: + Completely Free with full functionality + Easy to use, set up - No Android support - No possibility to create multi-bend tracks Gaia GPS: + Easy to use and set up + Customizable Bar Tiles on the home screen + Overlay Maps + Possibility to create multi-bend tracks. - FREE version only has only 1 basic Topographic map, but the paid version costs 10USD per year that gives full functionality and satellite map. Both apps support map download, so you can download the area in case you have no data coverage in that area, or if your phone simply has no SIM card in it So there you have it, two apps which are perfectly capable of doing the things we want them to do for our Off-road adventures in the UAE deserts. Very nice review and very useful for tons of offroader including myself who has been looking, trying and hoping to find one good offroad gps to beat motion x. I love motion x but im still using old iphone 6 and wanted to try android gps on my note due to bigger screen. I will try this and share my review, soon. Btw, Motionx is not free either, Its 7.29 AED to install and 17 AED for custom maps. I believe this 17 is for lifetime as I vaguely remember paying them once and after that I haven't paid them again. Anyone having iPhone, must use Motion X it's worth its price in GOLD.

Yes, bigger tyres can create issues. But from what I have read it would only for tyre size above 35 inch. Regarding the gear ratio, just check if it's better to go higher up as you would have less wheel spin. In the case of rock crawling higher gear ratio is better as to get the max torque at low speed. But when driving on sand, you ideally need your wheel to spin to get you out of the situation.

There is no rear difflock as a stock option in the Wrangler. Even I suspect the rear bushing, but then since it's a solid axle at the rear would it affect?

Very strange indeed. You might want to get the diff bearings checked too. If there is excessive play in those, that might be the reason why the teeth chipped off. In case of regular overheating you should probably see a blueish color on the teeth too. I don’t think that’s the case here. You mentioned that the car behaved differently off-road. The damage must have been pretty severe by then already. Did you use your diff locks recently or kept them engaged while driving? Using rear diff lock for anything else than recovery causes severe stress and friction on the axle and it’s components.

Sad to hear that about your rear differential. Usually rear differential teeth chips under excessive heat or stress. Oil is usually a first thing to doubt, second is the stress. Have you been using the hand brake system for recovery but aggressively? - Main cause for diff failure Have you been doing burn outs that end with sudden braking? Have you been using the required spec diff oil?

I didn't hear noice at all. But it just wasn't the same off-road I could not crawl out of simple soft sand. The oil was fine. My best guess is that they overheated.

Today I took my Jeep to the service, I noticed something was off during the drive. Turns out the spider gears are chipped. I'll have to take it easy for the next couple of weeks while the new gears settle. 😭

A differential isn’t something you can just swap parts on. It needs to be properly set up, pinion height, backlash, bearing preload. I would be tempted to drop the oil out, put some engineers blue on the gears and rotate it a few times to see what’s really going on inside.

Yes you need to also do the front too. You can't do only one side. The gear ratio determines how many times your driveshaft will have to rotate to spin the wheels once. So the theory is that when larger tires are installed, you have several things working against you: the diameter of the tire, rotational mass, rolling resistance, and the added weight of the tires. By regearing you will increase the amount of force that is being sent to the axle, this allows the Jeep to move the tires with less of a strain on the engine.

One more question, if you are changing the rear differential ratio, do you need to change the front as well?

The guys at the shop recommended 4.10 like the Rubicon or 4.56 I opted for 4.56. Since the stock is 3.21 I felt it wasn't enough torque specially climbing high dunes at lower speed. Let's try them out I have driven a friend's Rubicon and I honestly did not feel any difference.

I am using wikiloc for recording tracks and you can put additional way points with pictures so you can remember what's where seems decent up till now...and while recording the screen turns off to save battery... haven't had the chance to to replay any particular track until now but will soon see that side of it too... It's also having paid version but I am using the free one

I had researched a lot on this higher differential ratio. The build quality is generally better for the higher ratios, but this fact of wheel spin needs to be checked. When I read about it, didn't seem to make sense to go up the ratio. Correct me if I am wrong, but if the ratio says 4.56, that means for every 4.56 rotation of the engine the wheel would spin 1 time. This is good in Rocky terrain and you have the max torque band in the region of 3000-4000 rpm where you need to rotate the tires just a little over the rocks to cross the obstacle. But in sand it's the opposite. When you need to do the high hill climb, I believe a lower ratio is better as you will have more wheel spin at the same torque band.

There is no diff lock on the sport version only in the Rubicon 😭. I already told them to change the bearings because some debris from the gears could have gotten inside and is better safe than sorry. My car is 77k km. It is very weird indeed I have tried to see if this is common for these cars but I haven't seen anything online that would indicate that. However the guys from the shop said they replace them all the time so seems it's common, maybe a design flaw? I would say the bigger tires might have had something to do with this. More mass to move the gears. Since they are already opening everything I also asked them to put a higher gear ratio I hope this would also help to get me more torque and spread more evenly the force from the axels

As the early morning weather is getting little better, so its been decided to split the Intermediate drive from midnight to early morning to experience both night drive and day drive in one go. Plan is to start bit late and drive for 2-3 hours in night, then take a break and then enjoy the fast pace morning drive in some amazing set of dunes in Al faqa desert. Al Faqa desert is famous for its long range tall dunes that are fun to drive at good pace for ridge riding, side sloping and testing your offroad skills. The drive is for Intermediates and above only. Trip Report - What do you do when you're tired and had a hard week. You go through a relaxing therapy provided by a relaxing desert drive behind @Gaurav bhai. @Emmanuel in second lead, @shadow79 owning the third place, @Srikumar forth, @Javier M doing sweep duties with me. We started off with some amazing medium paced drive which was apt for the area with some sharp drops. We just weaved through the dunes like silk. Some tracks while others made freshly by @Gaurav bhai. As we approached closer to the morning break we has some major stucks. Before I had my rare pop-out which was quickly fixed by @Srikumar. The break was well worth it with some excellent food, drinks, refreshments and tea. It was a very refreshing break and we enjoyed each other's company. Soon we were on phase 2 where we hit all the big dunes and played on both sides of each dune before heading out. The mood was mixed with should we continue or should we call it a day. The decision was made for us by a wall. So we inflated and headed back home. Thanks to a brilliant team who performed well throughout. Till next time adios amigos.
