Whether it is capable or not, I would never take a brand new 250k AED car to the desert, I personally think people are insane taking them out there.4 points

You are damn right @Javier M he is our little rocket in the pocket hero. Among all the newbies we have trained, he has picked up so fast and demonstrated same with great confidence and helped others to grow faster. I was impressed from his driving when he was my second lead in Iftar bowl area, and I went in the nasty bowl and got little late to inform Fred to not to come. To my surprise he did exactly same what I did to get in and get out of that nasty spot in fraction of a second by keeping right at my tail in such a tight spot. You rarely see such quick presence of mind and adaptation in newbies.3 points

when doing swaps things can go pretty crazy have seen Suzuki jimmy and vitara carrying Ls engines had seen buggy with corolla engines the world is open to ideas you just have to have a thick pocket... had one guy here in sanaya put a supra 7m in a jeep the work had been going for quite some time then they finished it and the car was started it sounded like magic to ears but as soon as the driver took it for a spin it just went like 100 meters from the shop and then bram beem boom and the car stopped turns out the rear diff gave away...3 points

Hey Yas ! Welcome back ! And one serious topic to start off with 😆. I have seen some stuff on Instagram and had a look at some foreign forums a year back for the same reason. From what I’ve seen there is no straight simple swap to one of these engines, and if you find the capable guy to do so, you’re probably looking at a 40k AED job or even much higher. On top of that RTA will not pass this so you won’t be able to register the car anymore. My two cents: you’re currently driving a 3.8 which is a very capable off-roader. What would be the main reason for the upgrade ? Don’t get me wrong i also think it’s super cool to have a beast like that, but you should consider that many people do these engine swaps without upgrading cooling systems, brakes, safety devices, which makes the car a death ride and not suitable for long off-road drives, rather for going on Faya and showing off. The risk of tipping over and serious incidents is much higher too. I guess you don’t want to end up on a YouTube channel called “UAE desert Fails” or something. if anyone could pull it off, it would be @Barry3 points

Hello, gents! After a looong time, I will be able to join you for a drive. Feeling fantastic! 😃2 points

From which angle this Nissan Patrol Y62 seems stock to you with metal bumpers, crazy approach and departure angles, big profile tires and whats not under the hood to keep a pace in life and death matter for Police duties. That's how you need to sell 1.8 million dirham V12 beast. For your test Cayenne, it must be fully tuned for you to push like that. I had Cayenne Turbo for 2 years and tried offroad 4 times and it never hit the required RPM band nor turbo kicked in right time. I have never seen any other Cayenne too in the desert in last 13 years of offroading in UAE. What companies market and what they sell are two different stuff.2 points

I'm intrigued. In what way did the vehicle behave differently? Serious question.2 points

I totally agree with @Frederic, the swap is an expensive affair, unsafe and RTA will never pass it, you'd be better off buying an old Tahoe or Silverado and making necessary mods on that to suit your purpose.2 points

Bugatti just nailed it when others were planning to.2 points

^^^^This but then again you have videos of people in Bentleys in the desert! Its a promo vid but still fun to watch here is my colleague Marshal, real name Mashal Mohsin having some with the new Rolls Royce Cullinan. And me having some fun back in the day demo'ing for some action shots for the then released Porsche Cayenne for the press. White one with orange oval logo on the doors2 points

I am not a true offroader, but i can see the Y62 isnt a real offroad car. Its a flex. Hey, I can afford the newest Patrol so FU rest of you poor people driving round in your old model Patrols and Pajeros. I can afford a newer car than you, even if it is crap offroad.2 points

I second @Gaurav bhai opinion. @desertdude I've followed you from the time I started offloading. I followed your choice of vehicle, your style of driving and the routes you have taken. I don't doubt your off-road skills and could still learn a lot from you, however the newer generation of everything comes more apt and safe for the roads. With all the computers kicking in with so much data which modern vehicles read and send signals to the car @100 pieces of information every second mostly the car decides what it's gotta do rather than driver skills. Moreover these pieces of data can mean disaster offloading at times as these rules should not apply offroad. For instance while side slopping we all know that you should continue acceleration through the whole dune without applying brakes as incidents happen when you break your momentum. In most modern cars including the Y62 the engine kills the power as it thinks you're gonna flip. This in tirn puts you more in danger. Another instance can be while criss crossing the car thinks it's over turned and engages side airbags which is again not the best solution for off roading. With our recent experiences there are many more incidents which make us think the modern 4x4s like Y62 are not meant for off road.2 points

my two cents is if you are determined then you could take a handicapped blind donkey up a dune and it will climb up and if you are faint of heart then a legendary and prestigious horse will also not lend you a shoulder...remember only 20% is your ride rest 80% is how a driver inputs his ability and quick thinking into play....1 point

Nope, and all the guesses should be for offroad drivers as a whole instead of based on one or two drives.1 point

It was very strange, if I was in soft sand the car just would not want to go forward. The engine revved just fine but the car just would feel like the front tires were spinning but not the back tires.1 point

people who drive the car daily can feel things which I (i am talking bout myself only) wouldn't or in some cases take time to notice has happened to me quite few times1 point

If you are really doing it I would go with LS swap. But is not as simple as just swapping the engine. You need to look into reinforcing the axles and installing stronger shafts otherwise they will break. Not to mention thicker springs to offset the weight of the new engine.1 point

And to support this further, we have not seen those 4 Nissan Patrol Y62 again after there first offroad drive. If bumper is trimmed like in Adel case, they are good for newbie - fewbie level drive and not beyond that.1 point

You took this in totally wrong angle - in all aspects. You doing train track 3 million times a day or we doing sandbox has no correlation with Patrol Y62 - Is no longer made for offroading. PERIOD. If you want to compare proper 4x4 then compete Y62 with FJC, Xterra and Wrangler than present day Pajero, which is another imposter of 4x4 for mall cruising or 7 seater audience. Electronics failing to engage 4x4 when needed - THE MOST - is nothing to do with driver or offroaders, its a reliability issue and should be addressed by Nissan Japan, similar to cruise control failing at highway or exploding airbags. What I actually meant by my 3 questions: Your era of capable offroading 4x4 is LONG GONE AND DUSTED. Rem old sheikh video use to drive Merc sedan in sand, can you try that now with modern merc....? NO. Today most 4x4 is purely aim to 7 seater rat race but they still keep LO gear and diff lock to make buyers happy. In 2019, we have seen 4 Nissan Patrol Y62 coughing up on the first "newbie drive" in Maliha and not on Faya. Last but not least even for a moment if we admit Y62 is greatest offroader of this century. Still there is no fun doing offroading in something that is a ticking bomb and driver heart is sinking at every dune to not to break the bumper, fail electronics and expensive repair bill after the first drive.1 point

I agree for the most part, especially about using the diff-lock on hard surfaces, but chipped gear teeth won't affect performance.1 point

Before commenting on this @desertdude please answer: How many times you have been to offroad in last 10 years? How many times you have seen stock Nissan Patrol Y62 for dune bashing? How many times you have driven Nissan Patrol Y62 for dune bashing? Bumper is only the first turn off and one of the major road block to take this beast offroad. Second is the tire profile and size, not meant for offroad from any angle. Third is ton of electric sensors that fails intermittently. In one of the last drive @Adel Muradov Y62 Nissan Patrol got bogged in a small ditch, could have cleared by its own, but unable to crawl out. After several tries, we winch him out and realized that it's 4x4 light was blinking and it has switch to 2 wheel mode when he wanted to switch to LO gear from High Gear. After coming out, after few meters drive it engaged back to 4x4 and he was fine. Even while I was winching Asif was on drivers seat and kept of giving gas to assist the winching process and rear wheels were spinning but front were not moving at all. Engine, HorsePower, Gear and everything is good, just that its no longer bullt for such offroad use anymore. That's why Nissan brought back Patrol Safari Y61, as its been tested and proven for UAE offroad scene.1 point

Nothing but a facelift and new rear lights. Dunno why everybody is hating on it? It's a perfectly capable off road car. Remember nowadays almost nothing comes ready for extreme rock and rolling right out of the box. Some bumper mods are always a requirement. I'll tell you one thing I rather be in a Nissan Patrol stock out in the desert over 95% of today's 4x4 in stock form1 point
