  1. And that will be way sooner than expected, as one of the reason for this Liwa visit to identify an area where we can take Intermediate and not always wait for advance level. With remaining season in hand we plan to have lot more drives posting in Liwa soon. So fewbies, pull up your socks to reach Intermediate level soon and Intermediates get ready as another Liwa is coming VERY SOON.

  2. Nicholas Sparks As soon as a drive got posted that carried the name Liwa, I knew that there was no way back. And as soon as the signups starting rolling in with the big names of the Carnity Off-road world, i was determined to drive even for days to be a part of it. Going to bed early the night before and forcing myself to get some sleep was difficult, as I kept mentally going through my list of items to take with me in the car. My plan was to leave early, having sufficient time to stop for coffeebreaks and power naps if needed. I arrived around 06:00 at the petrol station and soon saw two gentlemen @Srikumar and @Gauravwith steamy windows rolling in. What caused the steamy windows will forever remain a mystery in the Carnity books 🤣 Soon we were joined by @Emmanuel, @Rahimdad and @Asif Hussain while the sun slowly started to rise. We headed off the nearby track and deflated, hungry for the dunes that we noticed on the horizon. @Asif Hussain carefully created a route beforehand and showed up with enough equipment to make the latest Fast and Furious movie. A few hours into the drive I became more and more amazed by the shape and formation of the dunes that were presented to us. They looked creamy, wavy, irresistible, and extremely scary at some times. When @Gaurav announced that he would do a sidey on a Dune that rightfully scared the living hell out of me from just seeing it, I knew that there was no way back and that my little blue’one would have to unleash all its ponies and more to make it in this terrain. Which it did. We all had our chance to lead, and seeing @Srikumar his smile and his reluctance to hand over his lead, brought to my mind that this little playground would be in our hearts forever. After having reached the track that leads to the road, we said goodbye to our friends Emmanuel and Asif, while the rest of us starting looking for a nice camping spot. Finding that nice spot came with its challenges: it was getting pitch dark, we were all getting tired, and soon we found ourselves in a serious tricky spot. We eventually found a nice area near the track and settled down to set up camp. Our buddy @Srikumar that we can thank for bringing the massive amount of nice firewood, left very early in the morning. I heard the double crank and him driving off but my body was still in lockdown mode. The drive back home in the morning in the presence of @Gaurav and @Rahimdad was a true blessing, to see two friends and soulmates being so in tune with each other. We stopped over at the AD car museum for a snapshot of the big Jeep and headed home tired but extremely happy. Happy that we were able to spend time with likeminded souls that understand each other without words, and happy that we all made it home safely, except for the radio rollover incident 🤣. And there we have it: the first Liwa drive of 2020, that was an unforgettable experience for me and i encourage every off-roader to put this on the top of their To-Do list. Don’t do it for the massive dunes or the lack of cellphone reception, but do it for spending time with an exceptional group of people that will get you to do things you’ve never could have imagined.

  4. Increasing the master cylinder diameter actually decreases braking performance unless you either fit (much) bigger discs, or (much) larger pads to increase the contact area between the discs and the pads. Much of a vehicles' braking performance depends on the relationship between the master cylinder diameter and the diameter of the caliper pistons. For instance, if the caliper pistons are say, four times as big as the master cylinder, the force/pressure generated by the master cylinder is multiplied by four in each caliper. Therefore, if you increase the diameter of the master cylinder by say 15%, the multiplication factor decreases non-linearly; ergo, you get reduced braking performance if nothing else changes. In practice, increasing the master cylinder diameter causes not only the brake force multiplication factor to decrease almost exponentially- it also causes the force required on the pedal to increase linearly, which means that the average driver may not have the leg strength to stop the vehicle at all. It's like the guy in the video says, there are a whole lot of variables to take into consideration when you upgrade brakes. In Africa we do much the same thing this guy did when we upgrade the brakes on overland expedition vehicles, but one thing we never do is increase the wheel diameter, because the added brake torque can (and often does) negate the benefits of the upgrade. I do agree however that in purely desert conditions, this particular brake upgrade is more trouble than it is worth.

  6. Envious does not even begin to explain it ... @Frederic I am laying down my writing materials, never to be used again! Your lyrical waxing of this drive has me salivating at the thought that some day I may ride the magnificent Liwa if I am fortunate enough to reach the elevated heights if intermediatoryness (yes, a made up word, but you get the gist). Hopefully you'll be sufficiently down from the bubble to tell us more on Friday. Thanks for sharing. See you soon in the sand.

  8. In a straight line yes of course bigger brakes make a lot of difference. However on the dunes, not really, because you don't use the brakes too much. I would also think on adding a bigger master cylinder, sometimes only adding rotors, pads and lines will not be enough, depending on the car.

  10. Hi Wrangled, there would be a gap of about 1 hour between both the drives. So to answer your question, you can do both drives.

  12. Liwa has always been love since the first time I went there somewhere in 2002 or 3. My most memorable moment till today was the 15 days I spent in Liwa. You know I've never been a fan of the regular sandboxes anyways.

  13. Try the iCarsoft i905 for the Toyota. It's Toyota specific and not very expensive. Around 5-600 dhs depending on where you buy it from

  14. Hi Chaitanya, welcome to Carnity Offroad Club. As you would be driving for probably the first time, its important that you have full focus and concentration on the drive. If you are sure that the family would not distract you while driving, you are most welcome to bring them along.

  17. Its already there, not only Tesla's but other cars too. You can drive them remotely, or even start or disable them too. You've been able to do that for years.

  19. Nissan Xterra are one of the best "ready to use" "capable" offroader in stock shape without any modification. Try, if you can, go for an "offroad version" while you are buying one for specific need as it has firmer suspension, diff-lock and underbody protection.

  20. I recommend swimming every day. That's what works for me. Unfortunately the pool in my building was in maintenance for months. Now that I've moved to a different building and once I stop traveling for work will be back to swimming. I've found that swimming every day and skipping dinner or having a light dinner works for me.

  22. Hi Richard, Absolutely you’re most welcome to attend both drives. I guess Sri will exit at 12 or so near ADNOC in Qudra, so we will have enough time, more than enough, to reach Solar Park, even if we don’t inflate. Also, depending on Sri’s route, we might be able to exit directly at Solar Park.

  23. It might not even be the main seal- it's just possible that the tappet cover gaskets are leaking and the oil is running down the back of the engine. Sometimes the oil can seep past the mating surface between the engine and gearbox, and if it that happens the oil drips out the bottom of the bell housing which makes it look the main bearing seal is leaking. Which is bette to remove- the engine or the gearbox depends on whether or not the vehicle is a 4 by 4. Some gearboxes are absolute bitches to remove, so it really depends on the vehicle. Speaking for myself, I have often removed the engine instead of the gearbox because it is sometimes easier this way- but only if I could do it without disconnecting A/C lines.

  24. Hi Chirag, As I think our our experts will tell you (so aologies for offering an answer as you did request 'expert' advice only!), the secret in the sand is not the width of the trye, but the length of the track when deflated (so it's actually more to do with the height of the tyre than the width). Being wider will of course give a wider footprint, but that is along a perpendicular line to the vehicle, and what you really want to achieve is more parallel coverage on the sand. Issues such as economy/tyre life/noise are driven just as much by the tyre thread pattern and quality of the tyre as the width. What I learned (as I needed two tires recently so have a tiny bit of understanding from that experience) is that the quality of tire is more important than just about anything else. I was tempted to buy some really great looking big tyres for my car - because they would look great - until one of our real experts brought me back to earth. The tires are the only thing in the car between you, the road and crashing. They have a really small footprint when you think about the job that they are supposed to do - which is keep you safely where you need to be on the road while the car tries to rip them apart with it's 00's of horsepower. A hgher quality 265 might be quieter, last longer, give better road holding and improved performance than aless expensive but really good looking set of 275s.
