We are having a nice mix of Newbies and Fewbies, so if all goes well i might bump the level up to Newbie+ in the lovely Mahafiz dunes. The plan is to drive towards Fossil Rock and use the play areas on the way there to practice some small side-sloping. @topgear will be my second lead, and will help me in trying to find the cleanest track for the rest of the convoy, and will slightly divert upon my instructions. @Nivin will be our center forward, and will help others with basic instructions when they have a refusal, and will relay essential information to me when needed. @marks will be our sweep, keeping the convoy moving and also help out the newbies where needed. Please arrive well on time and start deflating as soon as you arrive. After deflation, please stay inside the vehicles so i can do the convoy setup and radio check. Just wanted to share with all the xterra owners here .Easy way to secure cargo with bungee cords and spring nuts. These can be found at Golden Screws Ras Al Khor. Pictures are self explanatory whole spring nut and ring bolt set with washer (3AED per set) Steps Final after tightening These can be used in any car which has these kind of rails in the cargo trunk. You can use as many as you want to make it more secure and modular.

It's a long and lonely drive to the closest gas station if for some reason you think that it will be OK to risk being on the drive without a working compressor. What to expect tomorrow morning? It will be dark when we start: Sounds a bit obvious, I know, but we hope to get moving before sunrise so there will be a little dark running. There are additional challenges in following in the dark. This is a fewbie drive: Get yourself mentally prepared for a drive that will direct through more challenging areas of soft sand, side sloping and dune crossing. This means we will look to increase the intensity depending on the perormance of the convoy. There will be some play time at Red Rock. After that we will be crossing back to Pink Rock. In between there are long range dune formations and bowls and slopes that will all need to be navigated. Skills need to be honed and improved: Newbie drives introduce skills like dune crossing (up and down), handling descents, sand conditions. WIth Fewbies we start to enjoy criss crossing, ridge riding and slide sloping to a new level. The balance between over confidence and enough confidence is quite delicate. By now you should be starting to understand the potential of your car - fewbie will help you understand your potential. It's a team game: The key objectives for any drive is to get everyone in and out of the sand safely and to have fun in between. That said, there's no shame in getting refusals or stucks, there's no competition to see who can go higher, harder of faster and it's important to remember that every time on the sand is a time to learn. We encourage all members to learn by doing, and the team will be supported by two members on the drive tomorrow. Please help them to help you out. Sorry for late replies. RTA testing center WILL FAIL renewal/new registration passing test for even a smallest stickers (K&N, Borla, Club stickers etc.). As per rule book, they supposed to do that. Now some centers and some inspectors are bit lenient and leave the small stickers with a close eye, but for big one like this star on the door it will surely fail. Stickers that come stock with cars are only acceptable. Period. Usually small inconspicuous sticker like some club stickers will get border line ignored or call owner to remove while passing. If your friend has gone through with some big stickers and passed the test that does not guarantee that you will also pass. If they fail, you will loose 170 dh for re-test. Different Topic Adding another color to registration card can be done while registering the car with a form to add additional color on your mulkia. My stock car has two colors but it showed Silver on mulkia and up until 2 years back registration guy made me fill that form to add brown too. That paper is for CID (i guess) as it was in arabic and I had no clue on what I signed but in mulkia now it shows Silver + Brown. Different Topic Dubai police repainting procedure is totally different subject to talk and seek approval, even when you need to repaint full car with same color.

hi, @Ilya Golubinsky This square shaped flat case is for keeping the fire extinguisher and a few tools for the Jeep. The white foam packing in the Pic has been cut to accommodate the same and is shaped like a cylinder. I have the same one for my jeep. Guess it also has velcro at the bottom so it can stick on the floor. Hope this helps..

Normally police permission is required if you are doing any big advertising for your vehicle. I dont think the police would bother about the star of any other such stickers. But they might ask you to remove it at the time of renewal. You can goto the Tasjeel or Shamil testing center and ask over there.

Hi @Biju Abdul. Dune bashing is just a general name for a dynamic driving style in the dunes, in which ridge riding and criss-crossing is a part of. I never liked the description "bashing" as it would mean that we try to destroy the dune, which is the complete opposite of what we should be doing. The real art of offroading exists in "riding" the dunes like a surfer would "ride" the waves. Hence, using the slopes to gain momentum and make it to the next dune by carrying that momentum. If you drive in a convoy, you need to be aware that there are drivers coming behind you that also want to enjoy the same dune, so churning up the sand and fishtailing all over the place is not the way to do it, as you are completely destroying the tracks. The spinning while taking fast turns and rounds is called making "donuts". That is being done in 2WD and serves NO purpose other than showing off.

@Chaitanya D if these bungee cords fail, which will happen in few drives. Go with spider net from ACE and use your same hooks to secure it.

Dear @Emmanuel, there is a hard plastic cover on the rails (as in pic below)which needs to be removed to get access. I am not sure why your X doesn't have these as mine is basic version and has it . Frankly I was going bonkers with moving stuff in the trunk. After fixing the hooks look tight and secure enough to hold items in place with 2 to 3 strong ropes /bungee. Will update how sturdy it is in desert after few drives for sure. PC @Shamil with thanks

1. Apply through the Dubai police RTA for adding colour and mention the original colour also. 2. Get CID approval before putting on the sticker. Or talk to CID department in Quasis and convince them its already done. (Good luck) After inspection they will give you a paper for adding colour. Do the sticker and take it to any inspection centre for adding in the Mulkia. Some car wrapping agencies or sticker services can help in getting necessary RTA approval if you get the stickers done from them. Bear in mind there is a fine for stickers without approval

Hi @Emmanuel I think I didn’t communicate it well. I was referring to briefing or small demo (on sand) about the general techniques similar to details and illustrations shared in Frederics article. I have seen some videos of this kind of briefing by some clubs, so thought it would be very helpful for all of us in any levels as we progress in learning. @Biju Abdul we do brief everyone say for example before going for side slopping and the drive lead is the first one to show and demonstrate how it's done even before any one else is allowed. Before Covid19 we even used to encourage drivers to join the senior members while doing it or the seniors could join the newer member while they performed these manoeuvres to give them confidence. As these are high risk manoeuvres it's not possible to talk on radio while performing them as full attention is required along with both hands on steering wheel.

Before this, I had no idea that stickers like the big star or additional stripes etc actually requires approval from the Police or RTA. This is good info.

It would be best, both for your safety in general, and also because for our own Covid rules we should minimize the exchange of tools between drivers. See what you can do (sooner or later you'l have to have it). Thanks and see you tomorrow.

What I have mentioned is hearsay from other groups and friends. I tried to find on RTA website , but could not go back to the link exactly which one to apply. Probably best to call them and ask on 8009090 during working hours for the exact updated process. @Mohamed Seidam has the same star on his white xterra, and I love it! PREPARATION FOR THE DRIVE AND WHAT TO EXPECT 1) Please ensure that you reach the meeting point on time, i.e., 5:00 AM sharp. If you are late, you would be left behind. 2) Convoy numbering would be posted on Thursday evening after 6 pm. 3) Please spend 15 minutes of undivided attention to go through the Absolute Newbie briefing Video. This is absolutely necessary for the safety of you and your vehicle before your first offroad adventure. 4) For those who have radios, you can program them to the Carnity Frequency using the guidelines provided in the below post. If you dont have a radio, we shall provide you with a spare radio during the drive. We will be using Carnity Channel 2 tomorrow. (446.03125 Mhz). The instructions to program the radio are provided in the below post 5) All traction controls, ABS and Air bags need to be switched off. If it requires pulling the fuse, please do the needful. Incase of any queries you can always ask the senior members before the drive or better still, post your queries on this drive post and we would assist. 6) Deflate to 15 psi. Incase if you have any difficulties you can approach the senior members before the drive who would assist you. 7) Feel free to ask questions at any time. We shall be starting the drive close to Hammari Well at Qudra, and enter the desert through some nice easy tracks and dunes so that you can get familiar with your vehicle. As the convoy's confidence increases I shall be gradually increasing the level of the drive always keeping in mind everyone's comfort level. We will be driving for about 3 hours practicing driving in sand, proper steering control, crossing some dunes, and getting you and your vehicle accustomed to off-roading in general. By 08:30 am we will be heading out towards the Qudra parking, where you can inflate the tyres with your compressor or at the Last Exit gas station.

Hi Hardik, you can get the deflator for AED 5-10 in any tyre shop or at Dragon Mart. Else you will have to use your key or a screw driver which can take a while to deflate.

I’m surprised (or maybe I didn’t get what you mean?) because there’s always a briefing, even at fewbie level. If I remember well, at the beginning of the morning drive you attended last Friday, for example, @Wrangeld explained his plan in details and made a radio briefing.

Hi @Frederic thank you for your response. I am in total agreement with you, I too enjoy smooth rides in the desert and enjoy nature and not a fan of stunts, though I am not judging those who enjoy it. By feeling the comfort level we are getting out of this knowledge (theory), can we think of getting some short briefing by Marshal about what we are planning to do in each drive? As we know that the theory really helps when you learn the same by practicing. I know the covid situation makes it challenging for an open briefing but maybe a line up of convoy in cars with Not Allowed at our line of slight (demo on sand 😎) and the briefing on radio. Just a suggestion because it would really help us to learn faster and safer.

Absolute newbie drives are strictly reserved for the first timer in sand, so that they can learn and progress with very basic level of driving and shorter drive time for a safer introduction to sand offroading. Once you and your friend @Khaled Abdalla has attended the absolute newbie drive, you should be joining the newbie drives to enjoy more and progress faster. If all newbie drives are full, leave your and your friend (whoever wants to drive) name in the drive topic as we have plenty of drop outs usually on Wednesday and Thursday. Just to be fair with everyone, wait list is prepared based on first come first serve, so sooner you post your name in the waitlist, better are your chances to get on the Friday drive.

@Srikumar do you usually have a morning Newbie drive in Qudra or it is only evening. Meanwhile i drove once in the absolute newbie level as last drive my friend @Khaled Abdalla was the one that drove so i think it is better to drive absolute one more time before moving to newbie or what do u think?

Thanks a lot @Frederic for the excellent write up with illustrations. It helps a lot to understand these basic things for people like me who have no idea of these jargons of dune drives. Feeling more confident now to hit the dune in future with this awareness. That “half moon circle” Logic is really interesting way to keep in mind. May I also ask about dune bashing and how it’s done safely? Also we see many performing spinning of their cars in flat surface while taking fast turns and rounds. Are these done in 2WD or some other techniques?
