Yalla! Don’t think much, just get a Y61 VTC and khalas! You will be happy in the desert and on road with it, chances are you get to be unhappy sometimes when you think about what you spent in mods, but most of the time you will be happy I can assure you that My two cents on Y61: 1. Less electronics - less points of failure. 2. Parts - you can find them plenty: new, used, scrap yard, grocery in the corner, you name it. 3. Power - I managed to drive in terrains considered challenging (Qua, Bu Tais, Liwa)before installing any mods such as headers or cold air filter, the car did well, and had enough power for self-recoveries and to help recover other cars. 4. Protection - this applies to any car: skid plates (front and rear), roll cage (after installing headers/CAI ) 5. Suspension - this is key, good springs, shocks, sway bar/links, to help you control rebound and not lose traction. 6. Temperature - manageable, just ensure you check your car coolant before drives. 7. Wheels / Tires - choose well, lighter is better, but be mindful of tire wall wear; wheel offset close to 0 is best. Have read through many of the posts and would request some views in buying a stock SUV for off-road. This is to be used for a bit of city driving (but as a 2nd car) and definitely week end off road. I have got some new car options to start with (based on immediate or 4-5 weeks availability (hence not listing Toyota and some other SUVs). Will start my research on pre owned / used vehicles soon. 1. Mitsubishi Pajero 2020 signature V6.. NEW with some minimal (<100 km) from Al Habtoor PREOWNED division… with warranty until 2026. Price AED 125-130K. Seems good price but not sure if I need to do some modifications for dune drives / off-road. 2. Jeep Wrangler Sahara V6 - NEW from Trading Enterprises. 3yrs Service + 5 yrs warranty . Price AED 240k. Not sure if maint / resale especially if I move out of UAE in 3-4 years) 3. Nissan patrol Super safari V6 VTC 4.7L. NEW from Arabian. 1-2 month delivery. price AED 210K plus 3yrs Service / 5 yrs Warranty . Good off-road reputation but fuel efficiency seems very low! 4. Nissan Patrol SE titanium V6. NEW from Arabian plus 3 yrs Service 5 yrs Warranty. Price AED 260K. Seems heavy and not sure if this will be an over kill. Also not sure if maint. @AlexanderrrYes..Thats ideal. Have done test drives on few vehicles that i have shortlisted (New as well as preowned). Ultimately...want to be comfortable with the choice as this will be part of my life for some time!! Like the comments by some of the other folks here..that there is pros and cons on every vehicle. And..Taking a leaf out of Lance Armstrong's autobiography "Its not about the bike" (he is the winner of the Tour de France a record seven consecutive times ). Here it will be "Its not about the SUV"!! People have said it in this forum that more than the vehicle it will be the driving skills that needs to be given lots more time and thought. And ... am sure Carnity community will help!!

I would test drive all cars to see which one is the most comfortable in the city, and then rent it out for 1 day to be 100% sure, then you won't regret buying it and won't go wrong with it in the dessert, except Pajero ))

These where badged as the MU (mysterious utility) probably the coolest name. Great little car especially with the 2.8 td. The drive train came from the commercial pick up and only really suffered from a weak clutch, they rusted out pretty bad as they spent a lot of time on the beach. Back when air con and electric windows were still a option 😂

Hi @Shiboo Kr - Welcome to the Carnity and am sure you are looking forward to commencing this journey of off-roading! Please note this drive is for FEWBIE and above level, and I see you have recently joined, and accordingly you will have to undertake minimum no. of drives to level up to FB and then you can join the drives depending on what level you are at. If you have any prior off-roading experience with any other club , you can declare the same to be considered for a promotion without having to do minimum prescribed drives ( however subject to feedback from leads of the initial drives you do). Since this is a period where most of leads are on break, there is no Newbie drive scheduled this week, perhaps you can wait for one to be announced soon in coming week or so and take up the same to step up the ladder. When purchasing a car I always revert to what my local Dictators/cartel/UN use No1. Toyota, any Toyota will do.(Hilux, Pardo, FJ, landcruiser) Landcruiser is the best and they will all transport your 50cal with ease. Best suited for: war zones reliable: will out last your natural life and your sons No2. Nissan, y61 is the pick, great out of the box with minimal mods required. wouldn’t look at the others, they make brilliant drive trains but the rest of the car tends to fall apart around it. best suited for: light AA/rocket launcher work, transporting livestock. reliable: will last until retirement No3. mitsubishi, only look at the 3.8, great for the UN/governments on a budget. Does nothing particularly well but won’t let you down and parts are cheap. best suited for: budget oriented dictatorships, old men towing caravans. reliable: will last until the next civil uprising or cartel leadership challenge, probably 15-20 years No4 Jeep, has not been used in anger since the Korean War, can not find any government or warlord who has ever put their trust in them. Great as long as you don’t dive above 80km/h. beat suited for: frat boys driving to the beach, make sure there is a workshop on the way. Also good in movies reliable: should make it to the beach this weekend but will need a rebuild afterwards. 😂 I jest, get what you like, they all have pros and cons, some you have to spend a little more on as you move up drive levels and some are more difficult in the sand but that’s part of the challenge. I would Always look at what the locals and tourist drives are using as that a good indicator as to what works (they are out there every day unlike us weekend warriors) word of caution, get one that a good support mechanism as most workshops here are rubbish, the simpler more common car would be my pick as they would have the most experience repairing. good luck. p.s. get the super safari

if you cant wait for 4-5 weeks i would recommend to consider 1-2 year old low mileage Toyota prado with service history and warranty. Which will be much better than all other option you listed.

Hi @Nilakantan Erode welcome to carnity I definitely agree with @Krishna R to identify what your full needs are for your second car. for example you mention this will be used for city driving and weekend off-roading, depending on how much you use the car or the person driving on it will make your decision much easier. In my case I have a jeep wrangler 2018 sport, I use this for off-roading and daily driving, for me this is perfect and I Don’t worry too much about the on-road experience although it will differ per person.

1. Pajero. Some minor mods are needed (front bashplate and rear skidplate) Once this is done you are good to go. The Pajero is hard to beat for its value. Fuel economy however is poor (17-18 l/100 km). 2. Jeep Wrangler Sahara V6 - NEW from Trading Enterprises. 3yrs Service + 5 yrs warranty . Price AED 240k. Not sure if maint / resale especially if I move out of UAE in 3-4 years). The Jeep Sahara is nice and have plenty of options. If you are happy with less options you could consider the Sport. 3. Nissan patrol Super safari V6 VTC 4.8L. NEW from Arabian. 1-2 month delivery. price AED 210K plus 3yrs Service / 5 yrs Warranty . Good off-road reputation but fuel efficiency seems very low! Fuel efficiency is indeed low but resale value and reliability is superb . If you plan to really bash the dunes then the short wheel 2door model is more recommended. 4. Nissan Patrol SE titanium V6. NEW from Arabian plus 3 yrs Service 5 yrs Warranty. Price AED 260K. Seems heavy and not sure if this will be an over kill. Also not sure if maint. Not for dunebashing in my opinion, or you will need to modify the bumpers and make other mods).

Hello @Nilakantan Erode Welcome to the club! All the cars mentioned above are good offroaders. However, You need to identify your requirement between offroad performance and on road comfort. Once you figure that out, you can decide easily. Eg: Jeep is great offroad but on road comfort is a bit less. Patrol Y62 is amazing onroad but a bit heavy for spirited offroading. For this reason, many club members have atleast 2 cars - a daily that comfortable, economical for the road and an older offroad beast.
