  1. With the tremendous increase in the number of COVID cases in the UAE, we all have to be responsible while off-roading. Failing to abide by any single precaution at any time during the drive, will result in an immediate ban from Carnity Off-road Club. ZERO TOLERANCE First offender - 1 Month Ban. Second offender - 3 Month Ban. Third offender - lifetime ban and report to authorities. COVID19 PRECAUTIONS 2.0 All Carnity off-road drives will be LIMITED to driving only: No Socializing and gathering allowed at any time. No break for taking photos, breakfast, smoking, etc. No exchanging of off-road or recovery gears. Wear a mask at all times, while outside your vehicle. For passengers restrictions, follow RTA or NCEMA guidelines. All passengers should be inside the car, at all times. Maintain a minimum of 2-meter social distance at all times. Sanitize your hands and recovery gear after use. PS1. If you and your passenger cannot sit inside your vehicle for 3-4 hours please DO NOT JOIN CARNITY DRIVES. PS2. A Member who has RSVP the drive is RESPONSIBLE and LIABLE for their passenger's compliance. PS3. The above precautions apply to everyone irrespective of their vaccination status or schedule. PS4. You can confidentially submit the photo of any offender by sending an email to [email protected]. How to comply Read the drive post before arriving at the meeting point, so that you know your convoy numbering and radio channel. Arrive at the meeting point and switch on your radio to the pre-set frequency of the drive. Stop your vehicle at least 10-20 meters away from each other. Deflate your tires, while wearing a mask, and then go back inside your car. All briefings will be done on the radio now, so pay full attention to a briefing for your own safety. After the briefing, fall in your convoy position just before the drive starts. While driving if you get stuck, announce on the radio and be inside your car at all times. Trip lead and/or support will guide you on the radio for self-recovery or tow-rope recovery. While there is a stuck or a refusal, everyone else supposed to be inside their car at all times. You can only take a bio-break during the drive, by requesting trip lead permission. Once the drive is over exit out to inflate by maintaining 10-20 meters distance from each other. While inflating, only the driver supposed to be out and with the face mask at all times. After the drive, you can talk on the radio for any feedback, suggestions or help you need.

  2. Best way to grow in this sport is to loose count or stop counting and keep learning and start enjoying. Most clubs don't offer genuine reason for the upgrade and thus we designed this structure where everything is in writing and visible to all. You can definitely have a good idea as to how you can keep track of your progress, but ask the people who got promoted, it all depends on your comfortably level. Some learn fast, some learn slow. You might het one part right, but something else needs polishing, we will never risk promoting you to the next level if we are not sure that you can handle the previous level well and your learning curve is going upwards direction. Just enjoy, learn and let the time and experience take you to the next level.

  3. What Richard trying to explain is: You don't necessarily need off-road lights if you aren't leading but then if you have off-road lights you will see better, learn better and drive better even in the convoy situation. Especially in night drive if your distance increases beyond 20 meters from the car in front for those few seconds you will end up leading by yourself and in those few seconds, if you have a better light you will feel more confident. If you drive with stock lights, Hi-Beam is your best friend and you will be always chasing the car in front to not to loose him, and that creates a bit of sub-conscious pressure, that can be relieved if you have an off-road lights. I have driven (followed) and lead offroad for 10+ years with stock lights as LED bars were god damn expensive to 5-6K and we were fine. I bought my first LED bar in 2017 and realize what a world of difference it makes when you can see properly in night drives.

  4. @syed salman raza No such thing as 'only' a Newbie. If you want to invest, then please feel free, but there is no requirement to have running lights. Drive lead must have lights so they can see. Keep up the driving and in no time that will be you too.

  7. Whatever you buy, get a proper comprehensive check from a third party. I had a customer in yesterday with a Nissan for a full health report. Car was driving fine and showing no issues but we caught that the CVT was approaching failure point. The seller wasn’t happy but a 350 dhs checkup saved the potential customer a bill of thousands.

  8. If i remember correctly, that number describes the average number of drives you'll need to do before being upgraded to the next level. So in the case of a Newbie, he does on average 4-5 drives before being promoted to Fewbie, and a Fewbie does on average 10 drives (or 16 Newbie + Fewbie drives combined) to become eligible for the Intermediate level. This of course depends on a few other factors such as attitude, willingness to learn, online contribution, and if we have had the chance amongst the marshals to discuss the individual driver. Like mentioned, these are averages. We have in the past promoted people from Newbie to Fewbie sometimes faster because they had prior experience in other clubs, and their offroad experience clearly showed they were ready for that level.

  10. Very true. It is not suitable for desert. But before Koleos, I never thought of driving off-tarmac. When I got it, I started to think of driving offroad. Soon after I got beaten by the offroad bug. On the other hand, driving it on sand was a great challenge and I was giving my %100 at all time to cover up the absence of a proper 4x4 system and existence of electronics! When I switched to Trailblazer, it felt relatively easier. I believe starting with Koleos gave me an important experience because of the challenge.

  11. Due to the low weight the Koleos did quite well during the winter time. Now with the summer conditions and soft sand it would have had a very hard time i think.

  16. Hi Syed, Unless you are the lead on a drive or one of the Seniors you should not need special lights for the night drives. There is already a thread on night driving lights on Carnity, so if you want to buy there are some good tips there. As I drive a 2004 TJ the solution that I mentioned might be suitable for you.

  18. @Emmanuel I will unsubscribe, no problem at all, as these are the rules 😥. I indeed do not have enough fewbie drives with Carnity, that's correct, even though it should be said that, with the latest ones done with other groups last saturday, I have totaled 18 drives (335km on the sand) since Feb' 20. Enjoy the ride and see you next time.

  19. Hi @Nabeel Ahmed Welcome to Carnity. When you already know the Nissan Altima CVT gearing "Failing issue" and still even think about buying is like standing in front of a firing squad and hoping all guns will fail by a miracle. Fixing cost of 7K or 17K doesnt matter as once gear is rebuild you will be again hanging on that thin rope and sitting with a lemon that no one will buy from you at quarter of the price. Deniz has driven 62k so far and such problem starts from 70K - 80K onwards. These CVT gear failure is a very big known issue. Check here: Like @Frederic mention you will be extremely lucky if previous owner has changed the CVT fluid. Here's my advice: If you are hell bent over Altima, buy with a "WRITTEN WARRANTY" that Automall will fix the CVT gearing if it fails and sell the car before warranty expires - be it 1 or 2 or 5 years. My actual advise is - "Do not buy Altima", when you are already know the CVT gear issue exist. To compare in correct league, you should compare Altima with Camry and even if you have to downgrade 2 or 3 years to fit in your budget, that should be your No: 1 Choice - Style, performance and Toyota reliability proven in Dubai taxi since two decades. You can safely put 200K in next 5 years on Camry if you maintain it reasonably well. Alternatively, if you like Corolla and happy to live with it's minimalist design and feature for next 5 years, then that should be your next best logical choice - ANYDAY. Wish you good luck for whatever you decide and hope it brings peace of mind for years to come.

  20. I drive a 2018 Koleos in my daily drive which is basically a Nissan X-trail with CVT. It has been done 62.000km so far and I didn't have any issue with the transmission even though I pushed it several times in desert. But again I hear so many CVT problems from around. It looks like a big gamble for that kind of long run.
    3 points
  21. If you going to have this car for 200.000km you will have a transmission issue. Solving transmission is costing around 7000AED. Anyway i would accept the cost and choose the Altima over a Corolla.

Thank you very much for filling up the roster in a little over 4 minutes . Your enthusiasm is humbling. Just a few reminders for the trip: The meeting time (to start deflate) is 5:00 AM. Curfew has been lifted, and we'll take advantage of this to drive in the cooler hours of the morning. Please set double alarms, so that we are all able to be rewarded from our early wake-up with a timely departure, and a nice morning drive. Confirm having read the Covid-19 regulations and acknowledge by displaying the "Totally Agree" emoticon. This step is required for each single drive (it's not enough that you've done it in the past). Make sure your radios are fully charged. We have had occurrences of batteries dying in the middle of a drive, which will result in having to take the unlucky driver to the nearest exit. Please double check. For those unfamiliar with the area of Faya, it's a fascinating group of rather high dunes, joined by a low plateau to the famous Fossil Rock. Since approaching Faya from Fossil Rock can be tricky, it's happened in the past that convoys(especially if coming all the way from Mahafiz) have not reached Faya. This is why we have chosen to start off the drive at Faya, and tackle a couple of climbs while the sand is still cooler and less soft and shifty. We'll then proceed toward Fossil Rock, climb it as well, and return to Faya from a different side of the plateau. Depending on driving conditions and the spirit of the convoy, alternatively, we could even decide to turn left, and go toward Mahafiz, instead of looping back to Faya. More info on the drive to follow in a couple of days. Enjoy your week.

  29. This drive is organized in full compliance with the COVID19 guidelines. We expect every member that joins this drive to respect and follow these guidelines strictly in order to not jeopardize someone's health and to ensure we can keep organizing these drives safely. MUST READ: Not following these rules and precautions = Not allowed to drive. No Gathering | No Briefing | No BBQ | No Eating Together | No Touching | No Hugging We are only allowed to drive through the desert, as we are driving on the road now. So we will only do the desert driving just by sitting inside our cars at all the times and leave the drive without socializing or coming close to each other. Just like before we like to continue our desert drives through out the year, but this time we need your immense support to understand the strict control and to help everyone follow them all the time. How to maintain "STRICT" Social Distancing Meeting point will be set slightly (100m - 200m) inside the desert track. You individually deflate your tires on the tarmac before reaching the meeting point. While deflating tires, stop cars 10 meters away from any other car. Drive signup on calendar will be closed on Thursday morning by 9 AM. Convoy numbering and briefing will be posted here on this drive post before 6 PM on Thursday. All participants need to read & acknowledge the briefing by clicking "Totally Agree" reaction. Switch on your radio when you reach the meeting point on the set frequency advised by the trip lead in the critical briefing here. Once everyone reaches to the meeting point, everyone stay inside the car at all the times. Trip lead will do the roll call, convoy numbering recap, critical briefing over the radio. Any suggestions or issues will be discussed over the radio too. You can also speak to other members through the radio only. So please make sure that your radio battery is fully charged. Once all set, trip lead will start the drive as before. Refusal and Recoveries with Social Distancing Every drive will have 1 lead Marshal and 1 or 2 supporting senior members/crew. Whenever there is a stuck or refusal, only a Marshal / Senior Member / Crew is allowed to handle the situation. Everyone else including the stuck car driver, stay inside the car - AT ALL TIMES. Marshal / Senior Member / Crew is only allowed to step out to access the situation and do the recoveries: They will wear mask and gloves at all times when they are outside their car. They will try to help self recover through the radio guidance. If not they will use required recovery gear and do the needful (shovel, tug or winch, as required). If at any time Marshal require help, then only you are allowed to step out by wearing face mask and gloves at all times. Drive completion and inflation There will not be any gathering or sitting down together for food-break like before. Once drive is finished, after reaching the tarmac, everyone is requested to move away 10-20 meters before starting their inflation. For drivers having no compressor, can head to the near by fuel station. If drive is ending at a place where there is no fuel station near by, then trip lead will inform in advance so that drivers having their own compressor can join only. Strictly no sharing of compressors, radio, shovel or any recovery gear, at any times. Mandatory things you require to attend the drive Face mask - at least TWO face mask is needed in case one get damage or fly away. Disposable rubber gloves - at least two sets are needed. Wear face mask and gloves at all the times, when you are out of your car. Carry plenty of hand sanitizer and object sanitizer (spray). Use your sanitizers generously, whenever you step out to help or recover. Sanitize your hands before getting back into your car. Sanitize your recovery gears, if you have used them. Fully charged and programmed radio - without any excuse - No radio = No drive. Shovel - Must for every car, to do little self recovery Safety flag - Must for every car, like before Compressor - If joining the drives that is ending far from the fuel station. Mandatory precaution that you need to take at all times Do not step out of your car UNLESS/OTHERWISE advised by Marshal / Senior Member / Crew. No shaking hands, hugs or touching each other. No sharing of food, drinks or recovery tools. If you are not feeling well, please stay at home and take a lot of rest. If you have travel in last 14 days, then please do not attend this drive. If you feel unwell during the drive, please let trip lead know so he can plan an early exit. Not more than 3 pax in a car and if all 3 aren't living together, then they should wear the mask inside the car too. Two Way Radio Guidelines Every Offroader brings his own radio, programmed to the frequencies described in below advice topic. We will not share spare radios or program your radio on the drive. If you need assistance in programming the radio, post a topic on the Carnity website with your questions and we will help you out. Make sure your radio is fully charged. It will be your only way of communication while driving. Before buying, please carefully read below advice so you are informed properly on which model / cost / shops... No radio = No drive. 33. Yes, sure, I know, I fully understand. That is why, as said, as these are the rules, I opted out of the ride. I had missed it in the ride description when I first read it. Thanks.

  34. Hi @Nabeel Ahmed welcome to Carnity. There have been indeed numerous issues with the Nissan CVT transmissions. From what i've heard from 2018 onwards they upgraded to a new engine and transmission but still issues were being reported. You can be lucky and be troublefree, and i think it also largely depends on the maintenance the previous owner has done. If the tranmissions fluids were not replaced in time, the CVT will definitely have a short life. The Corolla also has CVT transmission, but i hear little to no problems about them. Also the resale value of a Corolla is simply amazing, and is overall a bit boring but super reliable commuter car.
