Loading ALSA sound driver modules: (none to reload). So I'm thinking alsa isn't properly installed? After installing it you must run the command again to see your hardware list. It will show you if system has any sound card attached to it or not, and even dummy sound outputs as well. The result will look something similar to this:

Hopefully I can pay you back one day if you have car troubles. I am assuming that System->Preferences->Sound and go to Hardware it's not showing anything at all. 1: If its not showing then you must try this command: sudo aptitude -y purge alsa-base && sudo aptitude -y install ubuntu-desktop this will reset the entire sound card settings and reload. It always worked for me and hopefully will work for you. 2: If in settings your output device is listed or showing dummy output as you stated earlier then use below commands: Step 1: sudo alsa force-reload It will take couple of seconds to finish this command. Once its done reboot. Try to check if its working now perfect you do not have to proceed to step 2 or 3, but if it did not then proceed to step 2 and so on. Step 2: sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-base pulseaudio Step 3: sudo apt-get install alsa-base pulseaudio Last and final command : pulseaudio --start waiting for the results now fingers crossed...... You do not have to pay back as we are member of one family so it absolutely fine though I will disturb you a lot for my car . Thanks for appreciating 1

Barry
After running, sudo aptitude -y purge alsa-base && sudo aptitude -y install destop Command wasn’t recognised. barry@barry-VGN-CS26G-R:~$ sudo aptitude -y purge alsa-base && sudo aptitude -y install ubuntu-desktop [sudo] password for barry: sudo: aptitude: command not found barry@barry-VGN-CS26G-R:~$ sudo alsa force-reload, there were no modules to load barry@barry-VGN-CS26G-R:~$ sudo alsa force-reload Unloading ALSA sound driver modules: (none loaded). Loading ALSA sound driver modules: (none to reload). So I ran, sudo apt-get remove –purge alsa-base pulseaudio Then, sudo apt-get install alsa-base pulseaudio Then pulseaudio --start This is the result barry@barry-VGN-CS26G-R:~$ pulseaudio --start N: [pulseaudio] main.c: User-configured server at {7a827c7605a7429187e4ce7ff10aa19a}unix:/run/user/1000/pulse/native, which appears to be local. Probing deeper. barry@barry-VGN-CS26G-R:~$ After restart (I restarted between all 3 procedures) I lost access to system settings. After a bit of research, I found out to use apt instead of aptitude so reinstalled. After reset, I got system settings back again. I tried sudo alsa force-reload, but again, no modules to load. I also tried pulseaudio –start but got the same result as before. So now I’m back at square one. Audio being sent to dummy output. I’m thinking to do a fresh install but I’m not confident as I think it will just give the same problem.
shadow79
its a laptop @Barry then why don't you put that usb sound cards externally and then run it from there..?
Barry
That is an option but this is an old laptop I’m trying to save from the scrap heap so I don’t want to spend any money until I’m sure what’s wrong. If it’s a hardware issue, I’ll open it up and see if it’s repairable. Can’t be any harder than opening an ecu and changing a few transistors right? shadow79
Sony has a reputation for making stupid press boards which are mostly onetime use and throw...its bit tough to repair it....
