dave
I have strange grinding noise in reverse sometimes. Is it common issue with Audi A4 or some weirdo bug?
sami
It could be rear universal joint rubbing against the aluminum heat shield. It only rubbed the drivetrain torque/shifts in reverse. Make some sspace in heat shield or use the bendable heat shield.

Dr.Basel
I have the same problem with my A4 2008 1.8T and the sound is increasing by time + the car is shaking horribly!! I called Al Naboodah and I'm going to the service center tomorrow to check it.
dave
Sory for late reply folks, it was actually a heat shield as pointed by sami.
