coil pack location in the engine

Recommended Posts

The ignition system in a Cadillac Catera is a little different than in many other engines. Instead of using a distributor, the 4.6i engine uses a coil pack to control the spark to the spark plugs. This pack is mounted on the rear side of the engine. Although it is difficult to access, it can be unbolted from the engine. You can then unbolt and replace each individual coil pack with ease.

1 Pop the hood. Unplug the wiring harnesses from the sides of the coil pack located at the rear of the engine. Unbolt the coil pack assembly from the engine, using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

2 Pull the coil pack away from the engine and pull it toward you. Locate the ignition coil that you want to replace. Unplug the spark plug wire from each end of the coil pack, using your hands in a twisting motion.

3 Unbolt the coil pack from the coil pack assembly using the 1/4-inch ratchet and socket. Set the replacement coil pack onto the coil pack assembly and bolt it in place using the same ratchet.

4 Reinstall the spark plug wires on the coil pack assembly by pushing them in place until they make a popping noise. Reinstall the coil pack assembly onto the engine using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.
