Thank you @Rahimdad bhai for such a detailed response. taking the vehicle to offroad means we have to be prepared for the maintenance. So it would always be better to go for the machines which are cheaper to maintain. The price tag was quite catchy as well as the looks, thanks to Gaurav bhai for the kind suggestion.1 point

Why would I feel bitter ? And AFAIK Ive dome just one newbie trip with you leading which will always stay memorable. As the convoy struggled to cross a small patch of dune for hours with the road right in front of us. It was good that Sikander Bhai was there and we just sat and chatted away the hours into the night watching the convoy struggle to make the 200-250meter of Small dunes and pockets on to the road ahead. All my most memorable trips have been exploration drives which we started as early ad possible as in not to miss the great majesty of the desert and not just see 50 mtrs ahead of you in your headlights. From Faqa to Lisaili, Gaurav was also on that trip. Al Ain to Wagan, one of the best trips of my life. From Al Ain Airport to the lakes also a great trip.So on and so forth.1 point

@manums, thank you for asking a very valid question. The Dodge Durrango seems to be an excellent choice for off-roading and the most tempting bit is its got a V8 5.7 hemi which produces over 323 hp and over 500nm of torque. Moreover a price tag of under 10K for anything over 10 years of age adds to the temptation. As far as capability goes, it is quite capable as an off-roader with a little lift and skid/bash plate to protect the radiator and some unprotected hoses which might take hit. However the cheap resale value of these vehicles indicate that maintaining it is never going to be easy or cheap. Finding parts for the Durrango can be tiresome process and when you find them the cost is always going to be higher, because the seller nows you are not going to get them easily. I never heard of a V8 5.7 hemi engine having any issues, but the transmission is known to have a few problems and if anything goes it can be quite an expensive affair. I would recommend to stay away from the Dodge Durrango and Ford Explorer, however I have had quite a good feedback and experience with the Ford Expedition and the Chevrolet Tahoe, but similar models and condition you will get for maybe 25K as they are tough, have fewer issues, easier to find parts and cheaper to maintain. A rule of thumb is person who make a small investment first up will cry his eyes out for life, compared to one who will cry making the first payment, but will be happy for life.1 point

i think Dodge Durango till year 2009 have pretty much standard off-road capabilities , its the models from 2010 onwards that have become more CUV type with unibody architecture. So a 2001 Dodge should be OK i guess. Comments any1 ?1 point

Sure Mohd, call me tomorrow any time - 050 5258706. Last time I got the visa on arrival and it was bit time consuming, I am thinking of doing it in advance this time so let's find out what are the procedure and documentation required. Everyone else, please decide and finalize your 100% decision by 12th Aug latest, so that we can all book rooms in same hotel. Check available hotels in expedia, booking and trivago and list your preferences based on star vs pricing.1 point

Hi Mohd, welcome to carnity and you are more than welcome to join this drive. Do you know that Mirbat resort is about 80 kms away from salalah and will take good 60-90 min each side....? I was also tempted on same due to very good pricing and offer, but reluctant due to it's location. From my first experience, Salalah day trips are quite tiring due to drive and walk up and down the hill and then end the day with such long drive will take the toll on fun and enjoyment.1 point

Oil eh, always ruffles the feathers around here! If it was for the transmission I'd say stick with OEM and all this discussion is kinda pointless, since its for the power steering. Which in this Pajero is basically nothing but a hydraulic pump and ram. And the manual itself as posted says its fine to use Dex II or III, so really not that much of an issue. Much ado about nothing! Yes some cars require fancy pants oil even for steering but this is not the case here. Any reasonable brand Dex II or III should be fine, as long as its not made from old samosa and paratha ghee refined in a shed in Ajman.1 point

Current : Nissan Pathfinder 2001, V6 (VG33E) Future : My history shows I have downgraded from a 5.7 Hemi V8 to a 3.9 V8 and now on a V6 3.3, so next should be a 4 Cylinder 2.7 Fortuner or Prado. Hehehehehe. Seriously : I would love to go for a Truck next time, either the Ram 1500 twin cab or the Ford F150 FX4.1 point

Banger racing. Get a cheap car from the scrap man for £200, take out the interior, lights, glass and all unnecessary parts. Fit a bucket seat, harness, rollcage and you're ready to go racing. If you're smart enough, you can sell all the parts you took off your car and end up with your racer for free. I used to have a lot of fun doing this in the UK. It's a pity you guys don't do it here in the UAE because it's a cheap way to have a bit of fun and stay out of trouble. It's full contact racing too so if someone gets in your way, just push them out of it. Just like the touring car championship lol Everyone likes to watch crashes Theres lots of different classes too, you can more or less race anything you can get your hands on, buses, caravans, even hearse racing1 point
