Today we celebrate International Women's Day 2020, which aims at elimination of worldwide discrimination against women, and celebrating the efforts towards gender parity. As Carnity Offroad Club, we are proud having female members amongst us in the community. They prove every single time that there is ZERO difference, and that their abilities in the offroad scene equal and even easily surpass the male group. They have the fantastic ability to see the big picture, multitask, and their enthusiasm is something that brings a unique flavour to our club. @Vanessa8580 you are the living proof that with utmost determination no-one can stop you. I am proud seeing you join the club and bringing full commitment and infectious enthusiasm. I look forward to many more drives and sharing our stories at home. @Jamy B. from overlanding in Africa, to exploring the UAE deserts, you are easily underestimated, but you're living proof that first impressions can be misleading. I take my hat off for you @Jeepie You've been in the male-dominated biking world for a long time riding Royal Enfields, and now when driving the mighty TJ you keep crushing the prejudices people might have about women . You are blessed with an amazing talent for driving and abilities to feel the vehicle and controlling it in the best possible way. @Colin Jordan no Colin, not you, but Cara, who has taken the wheel of her Wrangler and will probably not let go of that wheel anytime soon. She's a quick learner and it's amazing to see her tearing up the dunes ! Ask her to make a user profile and join us on the forum And last but not least, a big shout out to our partners at home (or in the desert in my case), who help us preparing for the drive, giving us the mental support, and for having the patience to allow us being away from home and enjoying our free time in the desert to erase the daily stress from our office and work environments. They have our back and i am glad coming home and sharing the stories of our desert adventures.

@Jeepie @Wrangeld Please try the above suggestions, you have a very nice car, piece of history. I know it hurts to invest but I love to watch your TJ and Sri’s XJ and all the other classic cars driving in front of me. Hope you find a reliable shop who can help you with the work if you need to replace or install stuff. But I’m sure the people here can also help you with that. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the input on this thread. We will now start researching and investigating the options ... and try to find a garage that can take the car on a Saturday or Sunday and return it on a Thursday. @Xaf don't worry. Between us, myself and @Jeepie have been running classic motors for years and years (me mostly with 4 wheels, Jeepie with 2) and know that they need investment. There's a lot of love already for the TJ, so it's going nowhere [even though I still hanker after something additional ...] @Srikumar @sertac @Brette @Javier M Thanks for the Jeep experiences. That's what I really enjoy about Carnity - the support is incredible form all sides and particularly brand sepcific information. @Gaurav @desertdude @Kalahari @Barry Thanks for the additional extremely helpful (or humorous/or both!) advice and feedback. As Xaf continues to remind us, offroading is a team game and we truly appreciate this input to help keep us moving along with the team week after week. For the majority of people here, a car is just a way to get to work and they don’t care how it works as long as it works. For them, a service simply means an oil change at the petrol station so you’re going to come across a lot of cars that have had major things like timing belts and brake fluid changes neglected. I recommend buying on condition and getting a proper pre purchase inspection done. If you need help with that, I can help you arrange it.

Infact there is a significant difference in power between the 3.5 and 3.8. Since a LWB Pajero is a heavy car, you will notice the difference with the 3.8 Also the 3.8 comes with the additional feature of Rear Diff Lock which is helpful to self recover in some side angle stucks. If you are serious about the Pajero try to get the SWB Pajero 3.8. Skip the 2008-2011 models as they have a gear upshifting problem.

Hi Guys It was very impressive off road trip to me & enjoyed a lot. I would like to say thanks to all the carnity senior team specially @Gaurav @Wrangeld @Rahimdad @Xaf for taking care of us as Newbie, Trip was very much organized, managed & disciplined. Actually all was really impressive, but nothing matched to the support/patience by Marshals/senior team, which is highly appreciated. Awaiting to join next trip with more enthusiasm & preparation.

I hope I am not late to this party. Boiling is a sign of coolant leak somewhere as DD mentioned. Get that checked first from where it's leaking and get that fixed. Please do not spend even 1 dhs on educated guesswork, because in overheating there are so many things involved that everyone here is right in there own way, but there own way may not be the same as your current problem. So you might spend all the money in mods and still face the same issue. If after leakage stops, it still overheats then get your radiator viscose clutch fan checked if its working when car is overheating or not. If your radiator fan is still running on normal speed (not on full speed) while car was overheating in the desert, that means viscose clutch fan need a replacement (500-800 Dhs) or you can run a direct clutch to make that run at high speed all the time. (50 Dhs). This is totally acceptable mod in GCC heat for off-road cars. Second step, get a switch install to start AC electric fan without AC running, because original AC fan is huge and ideally make a lot of difference when car is overheating in the desert. (50 Dhs). If these two brings good result: Option 1: Live with it and switch off AC whenever car overheats. Option 2: Install 2 more fans and run them on demand with AC. If AC fan and direct clutch fan wont help, then: Upgrade to slightly bigger radiator, preferably copper+ aluminium core Change the thermostat Change the coolant

Agreed. I do not recommend to drive in low range when you can drive in high range. I was trying to address methods of desert driving teaching in those video uploaded on youtube, to drive in low range gear. I would always prefer to drive in high range and D drive mode normally, unless stuck / refusal /situation demands.

@Wrangeld in addition to the suggestions above you may want to try adding an overflow tank. This really helps, had it on my jeep back home as that used to overheat even on the highway. Someone suggested this overflow tank and I gave it a shot. Never had an overheating issue after that. Check on the suggestion provided by others, this should just be an addition to all that. Even if radiator is leaking...? Even if viscose clutch fan is working at half speed...?

First change the coolant, put new radiator cap and add 2 extra fan. If it wont solve it add also aluminum radiator. Than it should be bullet proof. Another reason to like Grand Cherokee is the huge radiator it has originally. I am never overheating. I just change the radiator with the brand new original one, i put toyota coolant and new radiator cap. On the highway it stays little over quarter and in desert if i push it only it will reach half.

Bar none the worst car I've ever owned. It only overheated once but the temp issues were just one small part of what made it shit for me. What I was trying to say earlier was according to internet wisdom and many of my sheeper friends. Running hot not overheating in the desert was/is considered totally normal. But I just couldn't comes to terms with this "Jeep thing" behaviour and thus was never comfortable and relaxed off roading in it. But I did sell it for almost twice what I paid for it and bought two Land Rovers from that money. So it somewhat made up for all the misery it gave me while I had it.

@Wrangeld welcome to the Jeep overheating club. My suggestions which I have done for my XJ (which shares the same engine as your TJ) are as follows: 1. Replaced water with Red coolant (Toyota brand) 2. Installed 2 Hi Speed Aux Fans (there was infact space for 3 fans, but got only two installed). It costed about AED 80 per fan It has been close to 3 years and even on some real heavy pushing (in summer months) rarely has the car gone anything above 110 deg.C (max is at 125 deg. C, with normal around 95 deg. C). Also, I would recommend you to carry a water spray can to help cool in the event of overheating. Hope this solves the jeep overheating issue. And for this, there are always going to be people suggesting only Japs. But I have seen them overheat more often then my XJ

So it finally happened. After weeks of driving happily around the desert (including a Liwa expedition) without any overheating, little TJ got a bit hot and bothered this weekend while struggling through some soft sand and frustrated that it could not climb a hill decided to throw its toys out the pram [OK - water was bubbling out of the expansion tank]. Being quite new to this game, I happily believed everyone that said this is a 'Jeep' thing, and that they run hot: but I was hoping that there is advice out there about the solutions we can use/install so that we can continue to come out to play during the summer, and avoid the 20 minute long wait and litres of water poured over the radiator needed last weekend. I have heard that there is room for an additonal cooling fan and wondered if there's other people with experience that can suggest solutions that don't require us to spend money that would be much better employed in mods. [Now there's a thought, if there is a mod that makes it less likely we get stuck in soft sand, we can invest in that instead and the heating problem's gone Hahahahaha!] Or, is this just a Jeep thing and we are just going to have to live with it! P.S. All of you tempted to suggest the best mod would be to sell the Jeep and buy a Mitsubishi/Toyota/Nissan instead ... thanks!

IS there a real/significant difference between 3.5 and 3.8L for a desert drive. Am weighing up both options. Can't imagine there's a huge amount in that point 3, but may be wrong . . . Thanks

That's not entirely true, specially if you have a stick shift. You can start in 3rd and then use 4th and 5th. That extra bit of torque helps in tricky situations. Sometimes you encounter a patch that you really need to push through. Low range helps there too..

Yes and whatever you might hear about guys driving around in low gear, these will be the first ones to fry their transmission in weeks or months. It’s a bad habit and serves no purpose.

P.S : Jeeps are shit in the summer I couldn't handle the Jeep thing if the temp needle being almost 3/4th way to overheat and everyone telling me it's ok don't worry. It went great in the desert but I never really enjoyed it with my eyes more on the temp gauge than the dunes and was more than happy to get rid of it

If coolant is bubbling out that means your system is not airtight anymore and air is leaking in from somewhere. It's supposed to be airtight to increase pressure to stop it from bubbling. Most likely suspect, radiator cap gone bad. Had the same issue in those dark times when I owned a sheep xj same motor and everything as the TJ. I could drive all day long nothing but the moment I parked within 30 seconds the expansion tank would start bubbling and spewing out coolant. I had just out in a OEM radiator and an original Mopar rad cap too. After weeks like this it took me literally an hour of just staring at the engine while running to figure it out. A tiny droplet of coolant would weep out from under the cap and within in minutes evaporate leaving almost no trace behind hence it took so long to figure out. The original Mopar cap wasn't sealing the OEM rad neck 100% So a cheap 20 dhs generic rad cap from sanaiya was put on and fixed the issue.
