Good afternoon Desertnauts, What an amazing opportunity you've signed up for with the South of Qudra drive. Why did I pick South of Qudra for this drive? Firstly, it's not that well used as a 4x4 zone because it's a tiny bit further out than the Qudra Lakes area (yes - please take into account it's a 20 minute drive from the Al Qudra gas station to the start point). Secondly. we are spoiloed by the choice of wide dunes, high dunes and slopes on which to play. For a newbie, it's the ultimate playground because we can drive for a long time through, over and around the dunes and practice the skills needed to feel confident on the sand. The downside to this is that there is some soft sand to navigate and it means you need to get your momentum and power ratios sorted so that you can float over the incredible white sands and climb the magnificent dunes in front of us. If everyone is doing well, we can venture further in (direction of Ganthoot - Adu Dhabi) and try to find some of the amazing pyramid dunes - but maybe they are for another day. What can you expect on this drive? Wide dunes, high climbs (for a beginner) a faster pace and some side sloping as well as riding ridges. Sounds like fun! Myself and @marks are looking forward to it. Dear Desert Wanderers, There is nothing more inspiring than starting a desert drive at dawn heading east, straight into the sun rising from behind the scenic skyline of Fossil Rock: the long and gentle sunbeams paint the light orange stretch of sand between Mahafiz and the Rock with amazing colors in a mix of highlights and shadows between sharp crests and large ridges. We will enter this beautiful scenery quietly, almost on our toes, while gaining confidence with the terrain. As much as beautiful the view can be, in fact, equally challenging the drive may become, as we will be making our way through a glaring sunrise (clean you windscreen if you want to see through it!!). There will be a lot to experiment as we approach the Rock: steep ascents, sudden drops, smooth ridges, sharp crests, long sideslopes, soft patches, all dressed with a few bushes in between, but above all the Long Dune, whose name doesn't require anything more to be said. Conquering Fossil Rock will be exciting: even if our stereo will be off, most of us will end up with "The Ride of the Valkyries" as soundtrack in our head as we push it to the top. Depending on the sand cover, we may either attempt an adventurous dive down the steep East face of the Rock or a safer passage by the South-West side, from where we will hopefully make our way, if the time will allow, for a close ride around Camel Rock before heading south and exiting on the tarmac at Faya. @N@ved, @imranaasghar81, @Ashy, @Arda Yagcioglu, @Yusuf Esaf, @Matt.T, @Mikhail Lukichev, @Paul Zeitoun, @Shaaz Sha, @bassel el rafei, you are confirmed for this drive. Some other things to consider: - Spark Plugs - Clean air filter - Clean injectors And be aware that if the Landcruiser hasn’t been off-road much before, it might have become lazy and will need time to “wake up” to the world of dune bashing 😬

This is a joint initiative of myself and @Chaitanya D where we wanted to experience ourselves night drives and bring a group of members out with us at the same time. Our first outing is going to be a 'dark running' night - it will be almost totally moonless so we will be navigating only using driving lights on the cars. Our second outing is planned for the full moon, so we can see the difference between the two. Since COVID started we did not have a chance to run any night drives - which is apparently what happens in Carnity in any other year over the winter. So, what to expect? We will start in the light of day and drive through the technical and challenging dunes of Lisali until dusk starts to fall and the night drive begins. Once we get to the night drive part of the evening, we plan to be away from the small technical dunes and into more forgiving wider and larger dune ranges. This is important because night driving requires different skills. You need to keep closer to the car in front while remaining a safe distance. You need to follow the tracks much more carefully and not wander off because you think it might be interesting, you need to make sure you can see the person in front and behind ALL the time. As we approach Margham we will hit some larger bowls and bigger, long range dune ranges where we hope to enjoy a little play tmie in the dark - another unique experience, before exiting in Margham after everyone has had their fill of the dunes for the evening. Do you need special lights on your car before we can enter. No. They are helpful, but not essential. What's more essential is bringing the right mindset that this is a different type of challenge. We are looking forward to guiding you through it and having a lot of fun in the process. See you soon in the sand.

As a man driving a box on a wheels who's most technologically advanced feature is an iron box that makes explosions, in my limited experience driving in sand and getting myself unstuck i think that there's isnt much a crawl control system can do that you cant do yourself with a shovel, biceps and some energy bars, just a matter of how hard you're willing to work for it or whether you're capable at all as i understand that some people just might not be able to do it the hard way. And if you've reached a point where a shovel wont do anymore i cant imagine crawl control will change anything that sticking into 1st gear in 4L cant do. The tech is cool though, i imagine in situations where getting out of the car is inadvisable this would come in very handy, say heavy wind or a gun fight. And previous points about maintaining basic skills that you can always rely on even if everything lets you down seem sound, plan for the worst, hope the best in essence.

@Wrangeld - Hi! I just signed up to Carnity so I apologize if I got this wrong. I was about to do a ‘self declaration’ to bypass the Absolute Newbie. I’ve been riding recently with the Off-road Zone Guys for a bit, and before that on random rides with other Jeep folks and have a little experience. Happy to start at Newbie with Carnity and work my way up, but do you recon I have to go through the Ansolute Newbie first? Car is a Jeep Gladiator, 3.5 lift, 35’s, Let me know what I should do.

😄 I remember how did I feel about it when I swept for the first time it was also first time Richard leading a newbie convoy and Gaurav was in the center forward and I was in the sweep . I said : “Being in the Sweep position it felt like a Goalkeeper who should keep an eye not only on the ball "( convoy )'direction, but more to predict how and where goes to the best he can as our yard is not flat and to give relevant feedback to the captain and other players in the game. Yet and when appropriate even can pass through when needed and safe.”

This is a great initiative. Few days ago I drove with @Pancho in a fewbie drive and he had us practice ridge riding for the second part of the drive, and hoped to skill specific drives would be a great idea where one particular skill is practiced a lot. I am much more confident and comfortable after that practice session. I am driving Jeep JL Sport, I think it has a plastic skid plate. Will it work?

Don’t underestimate the power of your X , ohh boy it is powerful indeed till now believe it or not I am still discovering things in it and yes this vehicle is made to be driven in such environment especially in climbing. BUT always remember buddy it’s Finally the driver who is unleashing and controlling the power of this lovely beast . Well done 👍
