Solar Orbit - Intermediate Drive Report Limp along until your legs are spent, and you fall flat and your energy is drained. Then the grace of the Divine will lift you" - Rumi As expected, perhaps even as planned, we did drive long, we did drive hard (not only, occasionally, with speed, but also with determination and endurance), and we did drive steadfastly. Sir Winston Churchill would have been proud of us. The tribulations mentioned in the drive's brief, actually materialized only in the form of a pop-out (quickly fixed), a broken bumper (promptly removed), and a rear shock's spring ... springing out of the car (needing a lengthy temporary repair and early exit). Other than that, the drive was perfectly executed by the whole convoy., including all the new Intermediates, who managed just as well as the veterans. The circumnavigation of Solar Park started, with the blessing of a spectacular sunrise, in the direction of the south-western dunes of Lisaili, across its sabkhas, to Murqab's bushy tall dunes. The time needed to reach Lisaili first and Murqab second was a stunningly fast 1:20 hr, with virtually no stops, and a lot of concentrated radio silence, as we crossed the mostly technical dunes which skirt the innermost parts of Lisaili, and the western reaches of Murqab. The first stop brought with it a small lapse in concentration (I noticed this often happens, if the break lasts too long), which led to the pop-out (thankfully, a quickly solved one), and to the accidental detachment (and removal) of a rear bumper. Both incidents were solved with total 19 minutes of work. The last, and less common, predicament was that of a spring coming literally off the right back shock of @Amir Amiri's truck, probably due to an excessive torsion while criss-crossing the last dunes before reaching Faqa's sabkha. @Rob H, with the assistance of @GauravSoni, came through with a brilliant repair, which allowed the big truck to get back in action within the next half hour, and then reach the tarmac bordering the sabkha, for its safe exit. The drive proceeded to cross, again uneventfully and in just 1:10 hour, a stretch of closed, soft dunes, nested between Faqa's sabkha to the south, and "The Chimney" to the north (actually a solar tower, in the latest development of Solar Park). Having completed the southernmost side of the orbit in good time, we moved north, through that set of tall, long, and quite bushy dunes, better known as "The Middle Earth", from which we managed to exit, tired but unscathed, just next to Solar Park's glass spire. With a total of 104 Km covered, in 4:18 hrs of driving time (with just 1 hour of additional mechanical breaks), at an average moving speed of 24 km/h, the convoy, assisted by @Ranjan Das in Second Lead, @GauravSoni as Anchor, and @Rob H in Sweep, and composed of @Alain Canivet-Abikhalil, @Chinthaka Ruwan and @Humayun Ghias (all 3 debuting at Intermediate), as well as @Looper, @Matt.T, @Russ and @Amir Amiri (BTW, how is yiur truck doing?), earned their wings as Long Range Desert Group troopers. @Chaitanya D Thank you so much for this first wonderful experience and the way you and @Islam Soliman made us feel confident and comfortable to face all the challenges, the convoy members @Prakash Anoop @Bharath Rao never felt like are driving for the first time which helped me feeling more comfortable and secure in the whole drive, the recoveries and the dune crossing were one of the best moments for me in the drive, as those were the actual time the whole feeling safe and secure part was tested and you guys made it look so easy. I have got some very sound advise and suggestions from you @Chaitanya D which I will be implementing in the future drives to come, and for the videos that I have are too big files to upload here but you can surely check it out on my Instagram handle "juzertalib" where I will be uploading it on my IGTV with some editing for a better experience 😉 Cheers.

This tow ball is NOT SAFE for recovery, buy a hitch receiver shackle.

Hi @Joseph Raju as your tow ball hitch is single piece, its better to get rid of that and go with original Nissan Patrol Pintle hook, much safer and stronger for any recoveries. If you intend to tow a trailer in future then get rid of this single piece hitch and go with two piece hitch with tow ball and shackle receiver (bushranger) as a quickly removable option.

@Joseph Raju for your and other car safety, better you get the pintle hook installed and with 4 OEM bolts and not 3 like this one. THIS IS HIGHLY UNSAFE to use unless you have any other tow point or eyelets at the back of your patrol.

Those who have not yet replied regarding your cars' minimum requirements, please do so ASAP. One more question for all is: who has radios? Those who do, please bring it with you. They can be purchased at great prices at Dragon Mart. Those who do not have radios, please advise, so we can organize accordingly. Regarding the area of the drive, we will access the desert from a less used entry point, along the road going from Qudra Parking (where you can use the ADNOC gas station to fill up your tank), toward the Bab al Shams Resort. Follow carefully the Google Maps directions: once you turn off the tarmac road (after circling a roundabout next to a mosque), you will cross through the bike track, and an opening between roadworks being done along the bike track. Once arrived at the meeting point, we'll conduct a final inspection of your cars (sufficient clearance and accessible tow points are a must, without which you'll be turned back). Following a detailed technical briefing, we'll be ready to enter the dunes, and start your off-roading adventure. This area is rarely used by other clubs, and the sand is much cleaner ad smoother, so this is an ideal ground to move your first steps in the desert. Myself and @Anish S are looking forward to seeing you tomorrow, at 6:00 AM SHARP (and if you arrive a little earlier we can move out more promptly). Enjoy the end of the week

As you are aware of, this is a drive strictly for who has never been off road with Carnity. In preparation for it, it is important that you inform us if: you have any prior off-road experience; your vehicle has front and rear tow hooks / eyelets; if your car has the required ground clearance of min. 8 inches (21 cm) between the ground and its bumpers/undercar. Before joining the drive on Friday morning, you will need to have viewed the introductory videos (links above). Please also make sure you are equipped with a tire deflator and a tire pressure gauge (sometimes they are all in one tool). You will need these. If you have an off-road flag as well that would he great. In case you do not have a flag mount on your car, you may look for a flag with suction cups, which can be easily placed on one of the rear windows. Even if the drive should end near a gas station, where they have an air compressor, if you have your own please bring it along, as it may be quicker than waiting in line. So, to recap, useful tools to carry would be: tire deflator (must) tire pressure gauge (must) off-road flag air compressor All these items should be available at any ACE or Speedex store, as well as at Dragon Mart. Finally, the time has come to freely explore, enjoy and chart out Abu Dhabi's massive red sand dunes, a dream world for any off-roader to enjoy the big rolling dunes without any cross-tracks. A place to really test your vehicle limits and actual potential on virgin sand to better understand what your vehicle is really capable of in the massive dunes, bowls, and long side sloping. We plan to enter from Pac-Man (Alien crop circle, lol) side and enjoy the dunes with a view of a lush green agro farm in the middle of the desert. Amazing place to witness how agriculture has developed in the UAE, despite harsh and barren soil. Then we plan to head into bigger dunes with massive side sloping opportunities on two amazing long-range dunes patches heading towards Al Ain Farms. PS1: We plan to exit by 9:30 - 10:00, but in such dunes and crossing we might have an unexpected delay or difficulty as I'm exploring this area for the first time since 2018. So please raise your tolerance and factor in extra time for some delay. PS2: Get ready for some serious fun, much more than a regular NB/FB drive in Dubai/Shj. As there is no longer PCR/DPI test required for entering Abu Dhabi, so looking forward to see more Dubai and Sharjah members to join too. Very good idea, you can go ahead and do the initiation too. Totally agree on sand tax and mat tax, I tried both in dunes and they never work unless you have solid ground or angle under your car.

That's an absolute shame. But I see exactly why too. Of all the drives I've been on between Dubai & Sharjah, it's one of the most scenically stunning places, but every time we've been out for a drive, it's been littered with trash. The base of Pink Rock, a few weeks ago looked like it was the scene of an overnight festival.

Yes, we have seen the fences being installed over the last couple of months and heard rumours. Last week on our Mahafiz drive we avoided this area due to the fences, and we should stay out of it. With the amount of people littering all over the place and disturbing this area, it was bound to happen and i am in a way happy that they have fenced it off for preservation. There are plenty other areas for us to play in.

I would recommend the 275/70/R17 because at the same deflated pressure, more sidewall would give a better footprint than more width . And yes, try to put in the Yokohama as a first choice. Though it will not win in a beauty contest in comparison to a BFG, but you would appreciate the lighter tyre much more as you go up the ranks. P.S. Am glad to add to the confusion 😜

No Gaurav is right here, not the cheapest really but good none the less. It’s nice to have an AT tire that feels safe on road , as not sure about you but my car is an everyday drive as well as off road vehicle

Totally agree with @Christopher Assal, I didn't mention them as they were not in the initial list. I have tried LTX for 2+ year and was totally happy. I stopped mentioning LTX as they have been discontinued for over 10 years and forcefully replaced with Primacy, which is good but an HT tire with least possibility of self-recovery in sand. Recently Michelin bought LTX force back again, and knowing Michelin and LTX (past experience) I was sure it will be worth every penny (as they are quite expensive than Geo).

Hi Im running with the Michelin LTX Force not really tested that much in the region , but has great Australian reviews. When I was less experienced @Gauravcommented on them being very good. Since then I have driven a lot in them on and off the road and have a very high opinion of them. On road: They are quiet do not feel like an off-road tire / all terrain tire with fantastic grip in the rain and also dry dusty roads. I feel very safe with them at any speed. Really remarkable for an AT tire. Off road: I run the psi at 10.5 when off roading and yet to have had a pop out, they have a high soft side wall which provides excellent grip and surface area in the sand and honestly I have no traction issues in the slightest. I would not run with any other tire now for and all rounder I feel safe and happy on them on and off the road. Another benefit is that they are a lightweight also , and in tests have proven to keep the tread over excellent mileage. My only concern has been on our wadi adventures in Hatta due to the soft side wall and potential punctures but here I run the tire at 18-20 psi to combat this. No one seems to have mentioned them here but I would highly recommend. If you want a big gnarly looking cumbersome off road tire and are concerned on looks I wouldn’t choose these. In all honesty though they are a great AT tire that most importantly due a job and allow me to feel safe while doing it. Oh I drive on a 275/70/16 don’t go larger on the tire size 275 is perfect for our car. This experience I take from Avid Patrol drivers . 285 is suited for too the two door patrol , but on the 16 inch patrol rims 275 are perfect and provide a great and sufficient tread pattern . Unless of course you are turning your patrol into a monster truck
