@Simon D@Michael Chattle@James Lovell@Marketa Dobesova@DP1011@Hugo@Bjoern@Rob H@Tareq Al Turq@Beide Worku@Amr Aydin@Fabien Monleau@Patrick You guys/gals rocked last night ! The terrain was bumpy and our attempt to drive in a straight line seemed easy at the start (pylon track ) but once it got dark and there were no more reference points, we had to rely on the GPS. In one particular area, and just like the countless stories of planes and ships losing their compass bearings, we encountered the exact same and I found myself looping around in a technical area while my gps was going completely bonkers ! After a short break on a sabkha, we headed back in and drive almost straight back to the starting point and exited at the same place from where we started 4hrs earlier. As usual, a splendid second lead in @Simon D, great support from @DP1011and @Fabien Monleau and a convoy that couldnโt be stopped. The so called triangle looks a bit like this: vs the planned route: Considering the fact we covered 52kms in some areas that were very technical shows the convoy strength ! See you all soon in the sand !8 points

Thank you @GauravSoni for the wonderful drive yesterday. It was a fun fast drive full of thrill and action until the unfortunate rollover incident of Gerrit's Gladiator. Thank God Gerrit was not hurt and the car eventually was drivable after straightening it. @Gerrit BusI hope you managed to drive home safely with the car, and I Hope it will be repaired quickly as it all seemed cosmetic. Thank you @Benjaminfor a great 2nd lead and for staring and helping recover the Gladiator @Chris Wing great CF and @Mario Cornejo nice sweep with your amazing SWB Super Safari, it was great to watch you speed down a dunes with a few amazing jumps, and I am sorry to hear about your puncture towards the exit area. To the rest of thr team @Krishna R @Santoso Marjuki amazing smooth driving bros๐ฏ๐ Hope to see you all again soon. Regards, Mohamad4 points

When night had come, it was time to triangle closed by the love lakes. @Frederic lead us smoothly in this night. We faced some refusals, quickly self recovered. At the end of the drive, when dรฎner time was coming, I used my winch twice for not wasting time to recover @Tareq Al Turq I took a lot of pleasure to drive with all of you. A big thanks to @Simon D as second lead and @DP1011as centre forward support. Week end is over ๐ญI hope to drive with you next weekend ๐ Have a nice week3 points

There is no wonder , your dream became true ๐and as a lead you looped it my friend in such a way that it was so smooth and enjoyable for sunday morning . Well done and looking for more loops ๐ following your tracks . Thanks again ๐ Thank you @Ishak for the nice pictures . You did good today and you gave us a moments to stretch a bit shoveling here or tugging there . Well done3 points

Thank you @Looper for the drive today. I was worried that you will cancel this drive ๐ซก. It was fun, fast pace, climbing side sloping and tugging ๐. I learned to follow exactly your track ๐ . So letโs redo it again soon. Thanks @Ishakas a second lead Thanks @Zed as CF. Your V8 is really nice. Thank you dr @M.Seidam as a sweeper, your support and guide. Nice play area3 points

Today's drive was more of "Nahel Loops" than "Nahel Loop" as since we took so many loops around play areas that we had to end the drive at Sweihan side rather than where we started. It was a unique experience doing pretty much the same track compared to last time in the sense that today, it seemed a bit more technical. It could be because of the weather and also becuase the track we took was slightly south compared to last time. @Ishak, @Zed @M.Seidam thank you very much to all of you for joining the drive.3 points

Thanks @JeromeFJ for another great drive in beautiful Nahel. I do love the dunes there as their formation and structure is quite unique which leads to interesting driving lines which is always great to learn. Iโve just loaded a couple of photos into the gallery as well as submitted my promotion request. See you on the next drive ๐๐ป3 points

A roof tent will give you a convenient, elevated sleeping option that is always present. It will give you great views of the desert or wadis and it will give you a quick and safe sleeping option at various types of terrain. A roof tent will add a lot of weight to the car plus it will increase the centre of gravity of the entire car which will hinder its handling and ability in the off-roading drastically. Added weight will also decrease the fuel efficiency if it is a permanent fixture on the vehicle when it is doing its daily duties. Depending on the type of roof tent whether permanent or removable, if you are regularly going camping or overloading it could be a great option. But if it is occasional use I would not recommend a permanent solution.2 points

Amazing drive @JeromeFJ a great start with my new ride, really enjoyed till end especially the big bowls. I was very much in sync with LWB pajero but it seems I will need few more drives to tame the rubi. Everyone drove well with no stucks and only had few refusals. Not to mention the additional break time we got in the scorching heat ( thanks to the pop outs). Some pics posted in gallery. Have a great weekend everyone.2 points

Dear Desert Drivers, Thank you for joining the drive this morning. This area of Nahel is never disappointing, and again today we could enjoy these beautiful dunes. We had virgin sand most of the time, and could not see any other car during the whole drive. The drive was not easy though, as we went through a few high climbs, deep bowls and impressive descends. All of you managed very well as nobody got stuck despite the soft sand, and we had only a few pop-outs. The drive was very fluid, surfing from one dune to the other, and we maintained an appreciable pace of 23.2 km/h average moving speed for a total 66 km. Nathan @Stumpy Paj, thank you for the 2nd lead, you had to stop unexpectedly a few times, and for the support during the pop-out resolution. @Deepak Eswar, nice to see your new ride, you have seen the benefit of having more power in that "Blue Jeep Bowl". A few more drives and you will control it even better. @FERNANDO SYRIO, nice meeting you for the 1st time. Excellent drive for you today, managing to take the Fortuner through the obstacles. Brett @Bravoecho, our most experienced Fewbie today, you are ready for the next level. @Bjoern always a pleasure to have you in a drive. Thank you for doing your 1st drive as IM with us. You totally deserve the new level. @Naveen Raj, with a new car also, take the time to adjust to the capabilities of the Jeep, But you have already seen the potential with a perfect line in one of the high bowls today. @Mehmet Volga thanks for joining and sweeping the convoy, guiding drivers out of the refusals, always nice driving with you. If you have some photos, please share them here or in the Gallery. Enjoy the rest of the weekend !1 point

Hi @Ashok chaturvedi, this is not an FJ-specific thingy, I have a marshal friend who drives his Jeep in 4L 3rd gear consistently and some Nissan buddies also drive in 4L 3rd gear. I will get into the general stuff first, and at the end dive specific to A750F transmission which is used by FJ Cruiser to answer your question mathematically ๐ 1. Generally for older 4-speed & 5-speed automatic, people drive in 4H 2nd gear and downshift to 4H 1st gear when climbing or need more torque. In contrast for modern 6-speed & 7-speed automatic, some I've noticed drive in 4L 3rd or 4th gear. They're pretty similar, and I'll prove it mathematically at the end of this post... 2. My Nissan buddies drive in 4L 3rd gear because driving in 4L allows them to turn off VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control - computer will try to brake to fix understeer & oversteer), TCS (Traction Control System - brakes spinning wheel + cut-off fuel to engine and/or close throttle valve to reduce torque) and ABLS (Active Brake Limited Slip - Nissan's version of Toyota A-TRAC), as can be seen from this manual section: 3. If you're already in 4L, during stucks you don't need to shift from 4H > Neutral > 4L > 1st gear 'cos you're already in 4L, which sounds like an excuse a lazy driver would make ๐ FJ Cruiser A750F transmission: 4H or 4L? These are the Gear Ratios for FJ Cruiser / any car with Toyota A750F transmission: Now I'll probably do a deeper dive with diagram what these different gear ratios mean, but for now I will use a cheat calculator to produce the numbers: Problem Question: I want to drive 50 km/h (31 mph) in sand, what do I use? *The 50km/h is intentional as some manuals recommend this speed when driving in 4L, and also on average we usually drive below this speed for Newbie to FewbiePlus Putting the A750 Gear Ratio numbers above, you can easily reach 50km/h in 4H 1st Gear after around 4000 rpm, which is what you'll probably do when climbing a steep dune... then shift to 2nd gear to keep RPM below 3000 for noise & fuel-efficiency. 3.727 : Differential Ratio / Final Axle Gear Ratio 31.6" : Tire Diameter, FJ stock is 265/70R17 31 mph : Desired Speed (50km/h) 3.520 : 1st Gear Ratio 4L and Gear Reduction Transfer Case in 4H is 1:1 (mentioned in A750F spec as High 1.000 above), but when you switch to 4L, it becomes 2.566:1 , this is why 4L in 1st Gear is slower and useful for crawling (but still with torque). But for the sake of fun, how much engine RPM do we need to make 31 MPH in 4LO 1st Gear ? Transmission Ratio now becomes = 2.566 (4LO) x 3.520 (1st Gear) = 9.032 Your Tachometer is usually maximum 7000 rpm, so this 4LO 1st gear will not do, let's skip to 4LO 3rd gear: Transmission Ratio now becomes = 2.566 (4LO) x 1.400 (3rd Gear) = 3.592 And there you have it, using 4LO in 3rd Gear, you will reach 50 km/h (31 mph) after about 4000 rpm engine speed... very similar to 4H in 1st Gear... To recap: If you trust the factory's book recommendation and will not go above 50 km/h in sand, then 4LO sounds safe as it disables all those pesky electronics (VDC, TCS, ABLS, ABS) without pulling any fuse. Otherwise if you're driving long-range dunes and flats and will go beyond 50 km/h in sand, you may want to use 4HI + kill-switch to ensure ABS, TCS, VSC are off.1 point
