Post briefing the Convoy 1 started at 7 am and Convoy 2 , just after 10 minutes later . Convoy 1 Drive report While aiming for 52kms, but not taking any pressure, we decided to head towards Solar chimney as the intention was to cover Technical and Long range dunes . Thanks to the skill of entire convoy, I kept levelling up the drive and we kept moving swiftly initially through long range dunes, then getting a flavor of technical area, which was again happily accepted by the convoy members and with out the need of rope/shovel, the technical area was well completed. We then moved on to experience the long range dunes and the train continued on the lucrative ridges, which we kept moving from ridge to ridge until the first refusal where i was crested on a sharp ridge with hard sand , thanks to morning dew factor - the only refusal which required rope. Post ridges the drive offered us some vegetation and the convoy handled and dealt with it with immense patience. Looking at the time, we decide to exit towards Qudra solar park, and on the way we had a roller coaster ride with some sides which am sure , like me all of you too thoroughly cherished ! A big thank you to @Looper - which boosted my confidence , with you having my back. @Mahmoud Taha A great job at sweep my friend you kept me well informed and more importantly kept the convoy together at the back. Also assisting with the recoveries - which gave me some time to be relaxed and chilled while you managed those @Marek_was003 - You did great for your first FB drive - am sure in coming drives you will learn more on how to control those couple of instances of fishtailing . Thanks for capturing those amazing pictures ! , @Issam Atra @Mahesh_ and @Sreenath G, - the other fewbies of the convoy- You guys without exception drove fantastically and were very impressive. Special mention to you guys , that I could keep levelling up the drive. @Gurcharan Mehta - Jeep power , I know you had a relaxed drive with your breast ! Weekend Report What better weekend to pay homage to all 7 Emirates than the National Day weekend ? The plan was to cover all these emirates overlanding style, so a minimum time spent on tarmac and as much as possible through farm tracks, trails, wadis, and dunes. And there were many of them. Day 1 We met up in Ajman, as this was the first emirate to cover but unfortunately has hardly to no desert. A short drive through the farms and E611 underpass and before we knew it, we were out of that place We made our way to Kabir, a town known for its camel racetrack, located in Umm Al Quwain. The sand was quite compact so we started off at 20-22psi and kept this pressure all the way to the last hour of day 2. The part through the dunes of day one took us through Ras Al Khaimah and we took our lunch near the Masafi Friday Market in Fujairah. That one part "between sand and mountains", close to Al Ghail village (Adhen) looked absolutely magical and the donkey's were greeting us. As we made our way towards Wadi Shawkah in the afternoon, some clouds started to appear and a few drops of rain, but once we were halfway inside the wadi, it turned pretty bad. As there were lots of sedans in the wadi, and it was a busy weekend, it was difficult to keep moving and at one point a lady came running up to me insisting us to reverse because a flood was coming our way. While we were making our U-turn, some friendly locals told us to keep moving ahead as it was the easier way out, and they moved into full action mode by guiding all the vehicles through the wadi. That wadi, and especially the entry looked as busy as the Dubai mall that day, so evacuating it was not easy. Recovering from that adventure, we were running a bit late and had to skip the second wadi so we made our way directly to the camping point, a savanna East of Maliha. An evening spent by the fire with great company and laughs. What else could we wish for? Day 2 After a good night's rest, we decided to drive towards Maliha town and use the ADNOC Al Tayba to stock up our coolers and fuel tanks. The fact there were restrooms was also welcome of course. @Soufiane his Jeep was making some weird noises and on the parking lot we decided to inspect it before heading out. We found the sway bar to be sitting in the wrong direction, and had to disconnect the link rods, so we basically turned his Jeep into a sway-bar disconnectec Rubicon 7 Emirates edition ! We started moving and had to make up some time, so we drove on the farm track parallel to Jebel Faya and enjoyed the magical scenery. The second part, next to Jebel Buhais, was equally rewarding. Once we reached Pink Rock, @Christian Andras had to exit as one of his sons was getting some fever. I hope he feels better soon Christian and thank you so much again for joining us on this adventure! We moved further and passed Big Red, an iconic dune and came across a lot of dune buggies and cross tracks. Things didn't get better once we headed into Badayer. We kept good momentum as we were still on 22-23psi 😁 As we were behind on schedule i decided to keep moving along the DDCR (Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve) fence track, which allowed us to pick up some speed but it was a long boring stretch. We found ourselves entering Faqa town (Dubai) around 1pm, and this meant we only had 3-4hrs left to make it into Ajban or Nahel (Abu-Dhabi). We had a couple of refusals in the technical bushy areas of Faqa, but nothing could stop us. We crossed the border into Abu Dhabi and found pristine clean dunes north of Nahel where we had a great time but had to deflate our tyres to keep it manageable. We finally exited at the ADNOC in Nahel around 4.30PM. Day one we did 167km over 6hr 57 mins. Day two we did 170 km over 5hrs 27mins. This convoy was an absolute blessing to drive with. @Ahmed Farouk it's the first time i see you driving with us and you showcased superb self recovery skills twice. Super impressed with your driving ! @Damian also for you it was the first time with the club, and with a freshly new LC300. You drove amazingly well and i hope your family enjoyed this weekend as well ! @Soufiane always carrying a big smile, you drove great and it was great to see this is your first camp ever ! I am sure many more will follow ! @Dan S another fellow that's maybe small in size but makes up for it with the big truck and super positive attitude ! Always a pleasure to drive with you ! @Alphin Aloor I loved your insta stories that you kept throughout the day, and you drove superbly. Convoy 2 Drive Report : Dear Desert Warriors , @Faraz94 @Arravind @Stan @Ishak @Deepak Eswar @Frans M @george charbel @Emanuel this is the only word i could describe the way you have driven today. we have not only achieved our Goal of 52 KM but also exceeded to reach 69 KM 💪 . We started slowly driving through some easy flat tracks until we have warmed up to start afterwards practicing the ridge riding , criss crossing , then after seeing how well you are doing ,i decided to take you through a patch of technical terrain before we moved to a faster pace and higher dunes to enjoy the long range ridge riding . eventually to finish up we have played a little bit at the end doing some side slopping . you guys, could take what ever challenges i put you through.... Simply you were unstoppable!!! Special thanks to @Varun Mehndiratta for looking over my shoulder and @george charbel for making sure no one is left behind. Dear Dune Surfers, The Drive name says it all, the idea of this drive is to practice the skill and enjoy the thrill of side sloping. This drive is the reboot edition of the Skill Drive Series which had been posted in previously for Ridge riding, criss cross and Technical terrain navigation. Side sloping is an important skill while navigating the desert. This technique is very fun and addictive, but it needs to be executed with a clear mind and a good experience with the behavior of the car. That is the main reason why this technique is only used from Fewbie level onwards. It is very critical to understand how gravity works and as we always says: " DO NOT FIGHT GRAVITY ". this applies to this technique most of all. As the names suggest, we would be focusing on the skills of Side sloping on long range dunes during this drive we will be driving in the long range dunes as much as possible. We will be taking the longer route from Al Faqa to Qudra with some technical patches to traverse between long range dunes hitting every long side slope in safest way possible. Drive Time is expected to be 3 hours . Make sure you come with a full tank, Car in good conditions, recovery gear for this level (Radio, Flag, Deflator, Compressor, Kinetic rope and Soft shackles). Recovery points should be checked and in good conditions. It is preferable for the cars to have a front bash plate (6mm or more) to keep the radiator protected Let us know If your vehicle is lifted more than 4 inch of OEM stock height as your 4x4 center of gravity will be high, and you need to factor this accordingly while doing side-sloping. Lovely to drive with you all today on this holiday! Started off with spotting a heap of camels training on the race course... with another train of camels about 15 minutes into the desert from al lisali. Heading south west we came up on Solar Innovation park and about 500m of tarmac where we had our first break and let the pajero cool down a bit! From there we headed south until coming up on the Miltary Shooting range, tracking around the fence line until coming into ghantoot area where we spotted the running gazelles and oryx., A few more gazelles spotted whilst searching for mini oasis and palm trees around ghantoot. I have us at 90km in 4:39. I'll try drop some photos into the gallery tonight. Thanks to @Ale Vallecchi for taking us on a great tour, and to the support guys at the rear helping out. @Simon D this was the first time for me to drive under your lead, and it was a great drive. The tracks were fulfilling the crave for desert drives from high speed flat tracks, technical dunes, side sloping, some ridges. I believe everyone had fun with the drive. Hi Kailas, Will be in a white 2020 Pajero 3.8 gls. Completed the desert driving masterclass with Gaurav on Saturday. Really keen to test my new found skills. Have intermittent off road experience over the last 35 years in mountains, beaches, bush, mud and sand tracks, throughout Southern Africa as well as the Dubai desert 19 years ago when I last lived here. Dears, the most amazing and wonderful offshore experience that I had until now. Desert, mountains, rain, flash flooding with YAAALAAAAA water is coming, to camping and enjoying each other companies on a beautiful fire, to refusals and challenging soft sand on a 22 psi, to getting crested, recoveries and beautiful sceneries. This experience had everything that you can think of. Thank you so much @Frederic for thinking, planning and doing this amazing ride with chill and professional attitude. Thank you @Srikumar for your guidance support and funny moments, we had a nice combo with you two! Section 2: Filming Techniques Effective Filming Techniques Most of the discussion in this post is going to be about the 360 cameras. The reason is you want to capture action all around you. The winding tracks we take, and the refusals we have, the ridge riding and the crisscrossing we do; we want to be able to capture everything that's happening to us as well as to see what other guys are up to. With a unidirectional camera you would not be able to capture the action around you. The only time you can get away with a unidirectional camera is when you say you are driving in the dark and you have only the front that is visible for you. You can see me doing it in the current “Chasing the Doctor Series” on YouTube which was mostly short in the dark in the evening and in night. Even here, I am using a camera to track the Doctor where both 360 degrees angle is put to use. Before you start shooting - Check and double check the settings. I cannot tell you how many times I didn't check and lost what could have been a very good footage. Camera Mount Angles Having understood that a 360 camera is the way to go, let’s discuss where you would like to mount your camera and what will be the results of it. The discussion will be limited to my own experience and productions. My favorite place to mount the camera was on driver side Rear Quarter Glass or Rear Door Glass for 4 door cars. This would provide a very good view of the front and rear as well as a view of what the driver is up to. You can see this mount in action here: I had used it on the passenger side as well as seen in this video: If I am not leading a drive, I like to mount the camera on front bumper, because it is best when you intend to cover the action in front of you and it will show how you handled the ridge riding and side sloping etc. You can see the results here in action here: When leading I like to use the rear mount because I can show what the guys at the back have been up to. You can see it here in action: I have not personally mounted the insta360 X3 on the bonnet or on the roof so I will not comment on it for the time being. PS: I plan to update and revise certain sections to enhance clarity, streamline information for brevity, and improve language and grammar.
