  2. This drive is organized in full compliance with the COVID19 guidelines. We expect every member that joins this drive to respect and follow these guidelines strictly in order to not jeopardize someone's health and to ensure we can keep organizing these drives safely. MUST READ: Not following these rules and precautions = Not allowed to drive. No Gathering | No Briefing | No BBQ | No Eating Together | No Touching | No Hugging We are only allowed to drive through the desert, as we are driving on the road now. So we will only do the desert driving just by sitting inside our cars at all the times and leave the drive without socializing or coming close to each other. Just like before we like to continue our desert drives through out the year, but this time we need your immense support to understand the strict control and to help everyone follow them all the time. How to maintain "STRICT" Social Distancing Meeting point will be set slightly (100m - 200m) inside the desert track. You individually deflate your tires on the tarmac before reaching the meeting point. While deflating tires, stop cars 10 meters away from any other car. Drive signup on calendar will be closed on Thursday morning by 9 AM. Convoy numbering and briefing will be posted here on this drive post before 6 PM on Thursday. All participants need to read & acknowledge the briefing by clicking "Totally Agree" reaction. Switch on your radio when you reach the meeting point on the set frequency advised by the trip lead in the critical briefing here. Once everyone reaches to the meeting point, everyone stay inside the car at all the times. Trip lead will do the roll call, convoy numbering recap, critical briefing over the radio. Any suggestions or issues will be discussed over the radio too. You can also speak to other members through the radio only. So please make sure that your radio battery is fully charged. Once all set, trip lead will start the drive as before. Refusal and Recoveries with Social Distancing Every drive will have 1 lead Marshal and 1 or 2 supporting senior members/crew. Whenever there is a stuck or refusal, only a Marshal / Senior Member / Crew is allowed to handle the situation. Everyone else including the stuck car driver, stay inside the car - AT ALL TIMES. Marshal / Senior Member / Crew is only allowed to step out to access the situation and do the recoveries: They will wear mask and gloves at all times when they are outside their car. They will try to help self recover through the radio guidance. If not they will use required recovery gear and do the needful (shovel, tug or winch, as required). If at any time Marshal require help, then only you are allowed to step out by wearing face mask and gloves at all times. Drive completion and inflation There will not be any gathering or sitting down together for food-break like before. Once drive is finished, after reaching the tarmac, everyone is requested to move away 10-20 meters before starting their inflation. For drivers having no compressor, can head to the near by fuel station. If drive is ending at a place where there is no fuel station near by, then trip lead will inform in advance so that drivers having their own compressor can join only. Strictly no sharing of compressors, radio, shovel or any recovery gear, at any times. Mandatory things you require to attend the drive Face mask - at least TWO face mask is needed in case one get damage or fly away. Disposable rubber gloves - at least two sets are needed. Wear face mask and gloves at all the times, when you are out of your car. Carry plenty of hand sanitizer and object sanitizer (spray). Use your sanitizers generously, whenever you step out to help or recover. Sanitize your hands before getting back into your car. Sanitize your recovery gears, if you have used them. Fully charged and programmed radio - without any excuse - No radio = No drive. Shovel - Must for every car, to do little self recovery Safety flag - Must for every car, like before Compressor - If joining the drives that is ending far from the fuel station. Mandatory precaution that you need to take at all times Do not step out of your car UNLESS/OTHERWISE advised by Marshal / Senior Member / Crew. No shaking hands, hugs or touching each other. No sharing of food, drinks or recovery tools. If you are not feeling well, please stay at home and take a lot of rest. If you have travel in last 14 days, then please do not attend this drive. If you feel unwell during the drive, please let trip lead know so he can plan an early exit. Not more than 3 pax in a car and if all 3 aren't living together, then they should wear the mask inside the car too. Two Way Radio Guidelines Every Offroader brings his own radio, programmed to the frequencies described in below advice topic. We will not share spare radios or program your radio on the drive. If you need assistance in programming the radio, post a topic on the Carnity website with your questions and we will help you out. Make sure your radio is fully charged. It will be your only way of communication while driving. Before buying, please carefully read below advice so you are informed properly on which model / cost / shops... No radio = No drive. It is an essential tool and you should make sure you bring it on every drive and learn/practice how to use it. 5. 90% of the time that’s the problem. The rubber cracks, sand gets in and the rod jams. You can usually clean it and put some oil on it and get it moving again. As a temporary fix, you can clean the oil and grease off the rubber with brake cleaner and stick the broken bits back together with superglue or black silicon. Black silicon will last longer than superglue as it flexes with the rubber.

  6. Eric, you should read the grading of off-road members for this group. You are a newbie for at least 5 Newbie drives, after which you can be promoted to Fewbie (and join those drives) subject to your skills with your vehicle. To be honest, I had a CRV before and I would not even do a Newbie drive with that in the desert (doing a circle on flat sand is not what we do on out drives!) - not real 4x4. But Gaurav is very skilled in guiding different types of cars and maybe he will assess you on the Absolute Newbie drive. For sure you should not venture on Fewbie drive at this stage. Just my 5c.

  9. I spoke to the guy who made the video, as i bought my winch from him. He mentioned that he only got good results by using 4 pieces and avoid spinning the tyres as it rubs off the knobs on the maxtrax. In the video he was using both the Maxtrax (orange) as the treds (green) who have slighly different design but work as well. Like you mentioned before, i assume in soft sand you'll need to dig a track to be able to slide them in deep enough so the tyres are not slipping on it. I remember being stuck once long time back and used my wooden boards to pull myself out.

  12. Good morning eager drivers. With thanks to @Lorenzo Candelpergher, @E.C. TAN, @Colin Jordan, @Chaitanya D, @Shiju Manuel for hacing doen so already, this is a final reminder for @Febin Frederic, @RohanH, @Jorge Stepniak Felippe and @Roshan Abraham to confirm their agreement to the COVID requirements on this thread. To be even more specific, you need to confirm on the original post above (not the calendar) that you totally agree. This applies to each COVID drive. There is no blanket confirmation that can be signed off once. or you will be removed from the drive when it closes later in the week. Thanks in advacne for your cooperation.

  13. Just for the record and everyone FYI, I sold my car through Carnity classifieds two months ago with right price (not under-value, nor over-value) to private buyer in a week time. As here members and exposure are less so I only received three calls in one week, but all from private guys no dealer call of "how much last cash price". Not bragging this, but bottom line is to display your car ad to lesser exposed places but in front of real people like here, or local spinneys news bulletin board or in your office Intranet etc. It works all the time.

  15. I am writing this for a good friend. His wife took the car out without coolant (let the jokes come), it seams that the Head Gasket needs to be replaced. Could you advise a workshop/ garage for us? It's a Landrover LR4 2012 V8 5.0 HSE

  16. I’ve done quite a few rebuilds on these engines. You will more than likely need some head work done. Last one I done that was overheated, one of the heads was out of flatness by 7 thou. All the head studs should also be changed or you could find the gaskets leaking again after a couple of thousand kms. When you have the engine stripped down that far, it’s also a good idea to fit new hydraulic tensioners and chain guides. It costs a bit extra to do these things but it’s better for peace of mind and not having to pay for a second rebuild down the line.

  18. Your photo shows foldable sand tracks, which is not comparable with maxtrax. This is a completely different thing which I can imagine really don’t work in sand. The maxtrax are actually boards, which i agree are not useful when driving with a club or with other vehicles, but are useful when overlanding (alone) on different types of underground. On a flat dune sand underground I agree a bit of shoveling and crawling will do fine too.

  25. All good, but maybe someone needs to show us the technique as well, give an air compressor to someone who has got a pop-out and does not know what to do, it will not help. Maybe we can have a drive which can show us how to use this in the Sabkha to get out of such a nasty situation.

  26. Your friends name wouldn't happen to be Matthew now would it. Edit : Oh no can't be just saw that it's a V8 his is a V6 Must be LR4 gasket popping season. Tell him to get in touch with me if he wants to get it done by a good LR mech on a very reasonable budget. Only draw back is he's in Sharjah.

  39. Though a Light bar is advantageous, as long as you are following the car in front of you, your headlights are good enough for a night drive. Light bars are more useful for leads who need to define the route through the desert.

  41. I would try from Amazon.com not amazon.ae. I found different options and they ship directly from US you don't have to worry about import duties or any other taxes. Second option is carid.com they ship from the US and will arrive fast, and once it arrives UPS or Fedex will collect import taxes when delivering to you.

  42. I thought this was going to be like Mattracks. We had a F350 in the shop last year that was running Mattracks. If you have seen Twin Turbos on Discovery channel, that’s the guy who originally built it, Doug Deberti. The guy I was working for used to tell people he built it himself but to anyone in the know, it was pretty obvious when you seen the Deberti stickers all over it. Not the first time I caught him claiming other people’s designs as his own but that’s a story for another day. The Mattracks were pretty impractical for day to day use so they ended up getting swapped for a set of big rock crawler wheels.

  43. You can buy them and try, for once in a year or two moment. I totally agree with Richard, that they are pain to store. I do have folding one and they always failed to work and only impressed me once on rocky terrain to recover a car who was slipping on gravel badly. @Rahimdad might remember his treasure hunt event in 2010 to put a flag on pylon track, that was tricky for novice 4x4 drivers. For sand, self recovery techniques + 10 dhs shovel is more than enough. Event for the cresting.

  44. @Wrangeld good observation. @Rizwanm2 great question. We do not throw things out of the window in Carnity if we do not know about it. We have given maxtrax a try bought from ACE hardware. To our surprise it did not work at all, it would just slide inside the sand and the bogged down vehicle did not budge an inch. From the video he has shown us getting half stuck in beach send which is wet and gels together, he has deliberately got himself stuck, dug some space for movement and placed the maxtrax and got himself out. In the soft sands of UAE these just do not work from experience. I can bet with his situation, still with inflated tires if you dig a little and create a track you could come out of the situation by creating a hardened track like he did at the end by driving front and back a few times.

  45. I hate it too, but if you thought of it logically, what's Dirhams 200 when you're selling car for thousands of dirhams ? Yet I still hate it..
    1 point
  46. The price is fine with the 99'000 car.. His car is a Manual Gear with almost 40,000 dirhams Turbo fitted into it, that's why his price is high compared with other vehicles at the same model ..

  47. Yes amitaj, ^ that is what I am talking about .... and my guess is that a 2006 LC with 150k mileage or so will sell in today's market for some where between 46-50k. But back to the original question - Which is a good place to post car adverts? I don't like spending AED199 every time I want to sell a car.
    1 point
  48. Interesting development on this thread from lot of different angle. One more aspect that looks like missed till now is people expectations has grown up so much that it seems they really dont want to sell the car and just placing an ad for fun. It's all because of ads price is free at will, so if your car worth 50k but you can inflate to 80k and then think you might get lucky by a monkey who dont know the price. This actually happen in 0.00001% scenario and remaining 99.9999% it spoils the car real resale value as after seeing these inflated price, every other new private seller following same inflated pattern. And when you compare the car dealers they off course have insurance rated data based on car actual price with number of year for depreciation. Off course I know dealer is not saint and they cannot be as they need to resell the car, but the margin between the dealer price and actual listed classifieds price has grown because of people's false expectation. They have to learn to be more realistic, that's it. This is what I meant........lol.
