Nice post, but his first explanation contradict his first point itself - unbalanced tires. And, one of the most important point missed here for any DW is few kgs of sand inside the tire after a pop-out. Spend 20 dhs and get it cleaned and balanced before going through above points.

Repeating the exploration and endless mind-boggling fun of 12 Jan drive from Al Wagan, by justing taking the good part and re-living those most awesome moments to experience all of UAE best dunes collected in one place - aka - Al Wagan. The plan is to get to the meeting point at Mosque and start immediately after the Friday prayers. All drivers should get the tank full of petrol before reaching the meeting. All passengers and driver should eat lunch or breakfast prior to arriving at the meeting point. If time permit inside we will take small breaks but the plan is to drive until sunset and exit from another side - HOPE SO..... This is an Intermediate level drive, so no newbies and fewbies are advised to join. This requires the best of the driver and cars so please sign up only if you are 100% confident. Bull bar and LED bulbs are strict no no from RTA passing point of view. LED bar is also no but you can get away by getting it removable cover. Tires life depends of tire tread offered by the manufacturer. Every tire is different and some last for 20-30k (Dunlop / Bridgestone) and other goes up to 60k (Michelin). I had BFG in my Patrol and they def look awesome but they are very heavy and very noisy. I definitely do not recommend them, unless you have serious engine mod as they restrict your off-road climb capabilities to a greater extent. Also, you need a very loud sound system or noise canceling headphone to counter the tire noise (I'm serious). I have done a couple of Liwa with 3+ hour road drive and I went almost deaf after that and kept on hearing humming for few hours. Heavy tires will also sip extra fuel. Instead, you can go for Yokohama Geolander A/T having nice moderately aggressive tread that looks good and offers AWESOME off-road (Sand + Rock) performance and just produces tad extra noise than highway tread, which is acceptable. I'm using them for 5 years and changed to the second set of same tires last year. Many regular off-roaders have opted for same and you can verify that by checking the majority of FJC, Xterra, Cruisers, Patrols and Pajero running with them now even more than before. Spacers are a good add-on for increasing the stability if you have a too high lift but just make sure you go with a good branded one and not fake / cheap ones as they wobble and impossible to balance correctly.

Im using Hero 5 for about a year now, and so far very happy. I'm always being a Sony fan and did compare both before buying and opted for Hero 5. Never heard about SJcam, but if it's dirt cheap then give it a try.

I agree with Sri, but gearing issue is there in some cars only and it becomes known issue after a while that you can search and eliminate those specific models. Power/Weight and Wikipedia knowledgebase is king in researching your next offroad ride.

Real off-roader to consider in any budget (lower the year for affordability) Listed as per the priority - (From excellent - good): X-Terra, FJ Cruiser, SWB Land Cruiser, SWB patrol from 2012 onwards SWB Prado V6, SWB Pajero 3.8 (both require a bit of front and back underbody protection) LC100 (till 2008), Patrol VTEC (till 2008) Lesser the weight and electricry options the better it is for the desert.

Don't shoot me guys for saying this as I don't know whether WD40 is an approved belt dressing or not. I have tried WD40 to identify which one out of 3 belts is squeaking in my Pajero multiple times. It just that it creates a dalmatian spots mess in the engine bay, so now I put a big towel around and secure it properly before I spray WD40. TBH it seems this noise is because engine oil is low or what Saleem pointed that there may be some metal shaving, and some internal engine component is not happy.

Sorry Sertac, don't even think of that route knowing because it's 1.3 liter and secondly after your 4.0 Jeep Cherokee. I agree Jimny's are good in the desert, but they are just borderline good when you see what they can do with a 1.3-liter engine (comparative review based on a dinky engine). I had a chance to recover one Jimny from a deep bowl by circling technique, but that thing never gained momentum in cross track area that in end I come close to the edge and we joined 5 tow ropes to drag that Jimny uphill. Barry, what you see is DEFINITELY not the case in UAE Desert. I fall for 2 door SWB Nissan Patrol that couldn't climb half of big red, faya and pink rock. People here plonk Denali or LS engines under the different skin to make it look understated and win races for real money. Barry I love to read when someone talking hp/ton (power-weight ratio) my favorite golden rule to give thumbs up for any desert ride, this is my opinion based on my desert experience and frustration from so many labelled - king of the desert imposters: 60-80 hp/ton - Acceptable 80-100 hp/ton - Good 100-120 hp/ton - Very Good 120-140 hp/ton - Excellent 140-200 hp/ton - Rally or motorsport level 200 hp/ton above - Hill climb competition level
