After losing several flags and suction cups from Dragon Mart I finally decided to make better arrangement. I have finally done something cheap and works week after week for as less as AED 50.

I have simply found a flag pole with a screw end which resembles the ones found in Dragon Mart, so pretty light. Than I found a Makhrata or a turning workshop in Sharjah Industrial Area. I made them bend aluminium plate of 6 inch thickness with a cut at one end to fit the space which connects my boot door on top, the hinge. Then I made them weld a nut to the bend side so that I could fix the screw from the flag in the nut. Spray painted it for protection and Walla, within 30 minutes done cheaply and works remarkable well.

Planning to do something as I recently removed my top light bar with flag mount. 🤔

I have the Hanma lights from Dragonmart too, paid 450 AED for a 22 inch light bar which is mounted on my front bumper. Along with some side mounted flood lights for 270. Both came with a 2 year warranty. They run beautifully!

Yeah i have hanma too. 22 inch front bar, 32 inch on top, a spare 50inch curved (dont know where to fix as removed from Pajero) along with 2 side mounted flood lights . 👍🏻

I absolutely agree. We have a rare taste my friend. Stick it in first gear and hear that baby roar all the way to the top.

Manual 😍. Love it to the core.

Bringing this topic back to life.

After doing some trials and investigations on my 2008 Pajero, it is now clear that the vehicle upshifts by itself in tiptronic first gear at about 5300-5500rpm. This was a safety measure put in place by Mitsubishi that was later upgraded in the more recent Pajero models. In second gear it keeps its gear well until 6000rpm.

This is the INVECS-II system at work which is pretty advanced and not so easy to fool.

I've looked into the Omani hack but want to keep that as very last option, due to the fact that it puts the transmission in limp mode, and does not allow you to drive in 4H first gear (only 2nd and 3rd). Because of this you are required to drive in 4LLC to somewhat overcome the lack of the first gear. I would be ok with this for occasional use for climbing a steep dune, but not for a complete drive.

Also the Omani hack results in rough shifting, because disabling the output shaft sensor means the transmission cannot sync properly. On top of that it throws the CEL (Check Engine Light) which is something i really do not want to see on my dashboard. God forbid something else would be going wrong it would be ignored.

So currently i see a few options available:

    1) Getting a Unichip piggyback ECU with rpm limiter cutoff. A bit pricey in my opinion and i am not really looking at chipping a vehicle with +200k on the clock.

    2) Installing a "racing" rpm tachometer with shift light indicator. By programming this to light up a bit before the upshift happens, i can keep the throttle more stable and hopefully keep it in gear during a climb. I will however not use the full potential of the car, although the 250Hp is @6000rpm so we are not that very far off. I need to check wiring as i've seen these tachometers are normally wired on the coil pack. Not sure if this is easy with the Pajero.

    3) Installing a bluetooth OBD plug with an app like Torque: it also has a functionality with shift light notification, and at the same time i can see engine temps in realtime values. But not so very fond of again sticking a phone onto my windshield just for this one purpose. Good thing is that nothing is being altered (no wiring needed).

I've looked into other possibilties similar to the Omani hack, but have not found any decent solution to avoid the transmission from going into limp mode. There are so many failsafe options on the transmissions.

To be honest i am not interested in going for extreme dune climbs, but i am very worried about the car upshifting while doing a sidey, resulting in complete loss of power and the vehicle slowing down. This is downright dangerous.

@Michael sammy As you have experience with the Omani hack, can you provide your feedback on this ? And am i correct that the vehicle cannot be driven in 4H first gear once activated ?

@Frederic would always recommend unichip. Safe and the best with 5 hacks so you can use it for different occasions. Omani hack turns transmission into limp mode which pops up “check engine light”.

Dont ever play with pajero transmission, its kicks back so hard. (A victim)

2003 Pathfinder is a very good choice. Go for 3.5 that is more capable than 3.3 as you intend to use it in sand, so the more power is highly recommended.

@Fuad I think has 3.5, please comment on pricing if you think this 9K for 140k driven seems fine.

As per 17 years old age 140k is quiet a low mileage (if its real and not reversed). Check it properly.

Go thru these bunch of car buying advices to search, inspect and buy used cars.

Price is a bit high, it will be good if its between 6-7k. I personally suggest for 2004/2005 model as 2003 has ECU and Maf sensor problem. You need to change it frequently if you are using it as a desert toy.Make sure that you have the metal Maf sensor as it withstands for desert drives. Plastic ones which comes before 2004 model is not reliable.

I was checking this one out too, after the incident I've been thinking to get something that won't break the bank on repairs.

@Rahimdad I'm also inclined to get this one: https://tnydu.biz/DOy9Id

What you guys think? I'm not in rush to get something now.

So you are preferring manual transmission?

Severely overpriced at 14k and a manual with almost 300k kms.

Shouldn't be more than half that price. MAX 9k

Well maintained lifted, offroad ready pathfinder 2005 automatic asking price is only 14000. This is over priced.
when looking for manual, consider obtaining spare parts is very hard. Rare to find manual parts n scraps.

    Hello all.

Now that weekend desert drive has kind of become a routine , my family is upping the ante against me for taking the patrol y62 to sand and getting it back all dirty.

I have decided I will go in for a used weekend desert drive car to save myself and also my y62 which has been a very comfortable drive for all at home.

I have shortlisted few used cars as below

    1. Pathfinder 2005 3.5 L V6- 160000 km run for about 13.5 k (2nd owner)

    2. Wrangler TJ 2006 4L V6 - 120000 km run for about 22 k.( 2nd owner)

    3. X terra s  2010 4L V6 about  2 lac run for 25 k.( ? Probably 3rd)

All cars have been GCC , without any mods and have been Registered recently. All from direct sellers

I would like to have the suggestions from the forum on going ahead with these. Concern being all of them I think will not have a diff lock and how does that matter in the long run??

Personally if the pathfinder is good after checks , I will go ahead with it with some negotiation on price because it's quite cheap and probably easier to maintain.

    Thanks in advance

Will prefer Xtera as my first choice. Its pretty solid vehicle with adequate power to conquer any terrain. Jz keep in mind that u need to have a skid plate to be the first thing done before taking out for sand.

I don’t have much offroad experience, but I would go for the pathfinder.

This is just from experience what I have seen with my own eyes from our group (Rahimdad and the other white Pathfinder, forgot his name) and also in other groups.

The car has different versions of engines, try to get the one with the higher volume. @Rahimdad

Rahimdad has the smaller one, he is doing fine with it, but he is also an expert and knows how to take everything with his relative smaller engine.

    Good luck with the choice.

What I understood is that with bigger tyres  the normal wheel balancing is not useful. You need to balance the wheels without removing them. In Arabic they call it 'Mizanaya Arzi".

I have had to get this done for my XJ to solve vibration issues at above 100 kmph. But I have got them done in Sharjah

Totally agree.. i too had this problem when i replaced end rods and few other things and it was corrected by balancing wheels within car and now it runs perfect.
