2010 Jeep Cherokee review

The Cherokee nameplate has only been around since 2002, although the current model was launched into the region in 2008.

It’s designed to offer a Jeep vehicle to a much wider audience who may have put off by the size of the Grand Cherokee or the hardcore off-road nature of the Wrangler. Though it’s designed to perform well on tarmac, the Cherokee is still pretty capable on more taxing terrain – certainly more so than the smaller Jeep Patriot.

It’s destined to be an alternative to the likes of the Land Rover LR2 – both are five-seat compact SUVs from brands more synonymous with extreme off-road vehicles. There’s reasonable space on board for all occupants and a reasonable – if not overtly generous – boot.

The Cherokee is offered with one engine choice – a 3.7-litre V6 with 202bhp that’s mated to a four-speed automatic gearbox. The four-wheel drive system features Selec-Trac II, which allows for power to be sent to the wheels in a variety of ways. In normal on-road driving, power is sent to the rear wheels, but should you want to go off-road, all that’s required is a quick flick of a switch and power is spread between all four wheels. If things get really taxing, you can engage 4WD Low to make best use of the torque on offer.

Two trim levels are offered – Sport and Limited. The former receives body coloured bumpers and more hardwearing interior fabrics whereas the Limited version is fitted with chrome highlights on the exterior and leather seats on the interior.
