  3. COVID19 and the current economic conditions has brought enormous challenges. Carnity has always been about building a community of people, sharing knowledge, and helping each-other in times of need. If you are personally affected by the unstable economic condition, and are providing services or items that might be interesting for other Carnity members, please share them in this topic. We will not use it as a promoting tool for businesses, but more as a communication portal so you can tell us which business you are in, how you are affected, and how your services might be of use for other Carnity members. We will moderate the content and remove posts which are not in line with above vision. Example: You own a shop that makes curtains and were heavily affected: Post a small message to introduce us to your shop, location, and what you can offer. Carnity members that might have been driving in the same convoy probably even never knew that you had a curtain shop and might start making inquiries to help and support each other. Lets just share our expertise and services and try to help each other, even more in these extraordinary times!

  5. Thanks @amro elshafey for all the info. I'm happy to hear that you have driven before in dunes. For tomorrow it is the newbie level (lowest one) and we do go through dunes, but nothing extreme and drastic pushing as at newbie level we stick to track and some dunes to have a good feel of desert and advance the learning phase. Without the LO gear it might be difficult, but though we are in Qudra which is always running parallel to tarmac track, so in case of any difficulty we can always exit out. And these things will show up in first 10-15 mins, so you are welcome to join tomorrow drive but please come with an open mindset, and we will do our best.

  8. We went to the one in Bidayer last year. I used to have a race spec 650 Banshee so their ATVs were a bit underpowered for me but it was my fathers first time on one and he enjoyed it a lot. If it’s your wife’s first time I would recommend doing this first and getting a feel for it before renting something and heading out into the open desert. They’re small automatics so you don’t have to worry about clutch or gears and a guide will teach you and lead you round gently so you can get a feel for it safely before you go for a more hardcore option. Here’s my father enjoying himself

  9. If you haven't replaced the radiator and have it just cleaned. That's not going to work. Having it cleaned or rodded personally has always been a big waste of time for me.. Like I said if you have changed the water pump. Thermostat and rad cap but you only said cleaned the radiator. Before throwing money at a head gasket ( without even confirming it ) I suggest change the radiator with a new one.

Please also advise if your VW Toureg is has the proper 4 high and 4 Low gear selection, or is it an All Wheel Drive, or has one of those knobs to decide what the vehicle is going to do.

  14. I’m sorry you’re having problems with shitty mechanics but it seems to be a common problem in UAE. A lot of people have very little technical knowledge and only seem to know jugad they have learned on the job. If you believe you have a small head gasket leak, insist on a chemical sniff test. It takes 2 minutes and will confirm if there is combustion gases in the coolant. Holes in pipes is easily tested by doing a coolant pressure test. In both of these cases, you will notice you’re coolant level going down. Have you noticed this? The level should be checked when the engine is stone cold. If you cant get the problem sorted send me a DM and I can have one of my guys look at it for you.

  19. This tutorial will describe the safest techniques to recover a vehicle from the desert. We will try to cover all scenarios and focus on the safety aspect. Although many offroaders have already learned the art of off-roading in the UAE desert, performing recoveries is a skill in itself and needs practice and clear understanding and respect of the dangers involved for the person recovering, the person being recovered, and bystanders. This is a skill that will require practice, and the more recoveries you do from different situations, the more experienced you will become. Whenever you have ANY doubt in during a recovery, you should assess the situation with other senior members and make the decision together. 2-3 people will most likely have a better total overview and will result in a safer recovery attempt. Team work is essential in this sport and all the more during recoveries. 4x4 Recovery Tools D-Shackle or Bow Shackle The D-shackle, also called a bow shackle, is the tool that you will use to connect your recovery rope to the tow-hook of the vehicle (both sides). Since the uprising of soft shackles, and the incidents that happened with poor quality D-shackles, most Off-roaders have now shifted to using soft shackles. A good quality, rated D-shackle can still be useful in some scenarios, and they are safe if the recovery is being done properly, but the risk of this projectile flying through the windshield and potentially killing people has made this shackle a tool only to be used by people who have 100% skill level and know what they are doing. Soft Shackles Soft shackles were first used in the marine/sailing world and have recently become very popular as the perfect shackle to use for off-road recoveries. They are easy to use, and in case they break they will not become a deadly projectile. They are more expensive than metal D-shackles but will last quite long and there is no compromise when it comes to safety. The shackle is made of UHMWPE, also known as Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene, or Dyneema. This synthetic yarn is 10 times stronger than steel. Kinetic Recovery rope or Snatch Strap. A kinetic recovery rope is made of Nylon. The most useful characteristics of this rope is that it stretches about +/- 20% during a pull. This means the β€œtug” or β€œjerk” effect of the recovery will be dampened, resulting in less strain on the vehicle’s tow-points. The downside is that because of this characteristic, people sometimes have the tendency to start pulling much harder, which can result in breaking the vehicle’s tow-points or chassis. The recoil effect of this rope creates a massive force and that is why during a recovery we clearly instruct to not exceed 15km/h during recoveries, and to gradually build up the strength of the pull in 2-3 attempts. Do not use this rope for towing a vehicle. Due to the stretch effect it will be difficult to control the towing process, and furthermore you will damage the rope as it needs to recoil and settle after a recovery. When choosing a kinetic recovery rope, you should select a rope that has a breaking strength of 2-3 times the weight of the vehicle you will recover. For example; if you recover a Nissan Xterra which weighs 2 ton, the breaking strength of the rope should be at least 6 tons. Most recovery ropes have 10-15 Tons breaking strength. The reason for this is that the forces involved when a vehicle is completely stuck in the sand are far higher. Our club uses both the Viking Kinetic rope as well as the AOR Kinetic recovery rope with excellent results. The Viking rope costs about 350AED with a bag and 2 soft shackles included, while the AOR kinetic rope costs about 370AED without soft shackles. (AOR soft shackle cost 155 AED per piece). This rope is not the same as a Polyester Webbing sling that you will find in most hardware shops ! Kinetic recovery ropes will cost you about 350-400 AED. A Polyester webbing sling is far cheaper but does not stretch. Performing a Recovery When doing a recovery there will be tasks involved for both the person doing the recovery, and the person being recovered. It is essential that there is a clear communication established over the radio or verbally to make sure the recovery is being done professionally and safely. Bystanders should remain at a distance radius of at least 10m during the recovery process ! Scenario 1: A vehicle is crested Getting crested is an event that happens regularly during off-roading, and by following below steps you can recover a vehicle safely. The individual tasks for each person are mentioned below: # PERSON PERFORMING THE RECOVERY PERSON BEING RECOVERED 1 Will first inspect if the vehicle is front-heavy, back-heavy, and if the car can be maybe recovered without ropes. In many cases it is sufficient to clear the sand from the wheels, from underneath the body of the car, and try the self-recovery method and engage diff-locks. can help with clearing the sand from the wheels 2 When recovery with a rope is deemed necessary, he will attach the rope to a secure β€œrecovery point” of the car. The recovery point needs to be strong enough and in perfect condition. He will not perform recoveries on worn out or heavily rusted towpoints. You need to keep approximately 2m free-play in the rope, so you have space to ramp up the vehicle before the pull starts. 3 Will step inside his car, put on his seatbelts, engage 4LO and put his car in First Gear forward or Reverse depending on the direction he will be recovered. He then announces on the radio that he is belted up, car is running in low gear, and he is ready for the recovery attempt. 4 Get inside his vehicle, engages 4LO, puts on the seatbelt, and asks the person being recovered if he is ready for the recovery attempt. Acknowledges the message and confirms he is ready for the pull. 5 Will drive a little bit forwards and backwards to create a firm track if needed, then starts off with a gentle pull. This is to test the waters and in some cases the vehicle will already come out. 6 If second attempt is needed, he will announce on the radio that he will try again. Acknowledges the message and confirms he is ready for the second pull. 7 Performs second attempt which is slightly more aggressive 8 The car comes out and is bring brought to flat ground where the rope can be safely removed. Follows the recovery vehicle to flat ground Scenario 2: a vehicle is bogged down When a vehicle is bogged down or in a ditch, and needs recovery with a rope, the same scenario as scenario #1 will be applied. You should always clear the wheels and shovel as much as you can to ease the recovery. It is also very important to properly position the vehicle to avoid sharp angles. Again, the rope should have at least 2m free play before starting the recovery. Make sure you position your rope in a zig-zag shape and verify it is not in a knot. Creating a knot in a kinetic rope will damage it beyond repair ! Scenario 3: a vehicle needs to be pulled upwards In the case that a vehicle needs to be pulled upwards, you need to be aware that the force that you will need to apply will be far higher. Some examples: - Towing a 2 Ton vehicle on the road results in a 100kg pull resistance. - Recovering a wheel-bogged down 2 Ton vehicle on flat sand results in 2000kg of pull resistance. - Pulling a chassid-bogged down 2 Ton vehicle on an upward slope of 15Β° results in 3500kg of pull resistance. (as photo below). This is the main reason why it is so important to clear the wheels from sand and shovel out the body of the vehicle as much as possible to reduce the resistance. Be aware that when pulling a vehicle upwards on a steep angle might damage the front bumper on the vehicle that is being recovered. Especially on slopes of 10Β° and more, the rope can hit the front bumper. Additional safety measures Safety Strap At a more advanced level of off-roading, safety strap is a very helpful tool to secure the rope or d-shackle during extreme recoveries. In that case it will avoid from becoming a projectile. Tow Point Essentials Most 4x4 vehicles are equipped with proper tow hooks which are welded to the chassis. In more modern SUV's which are less meant for heavy duty use, you will sometimes find a screw-in type of tow hook. These are generally ok for occasional use but for weekly recoveries they will not do as the threading will wear out and eventually they will fly out. Every Offroader should make sure he has proper recovery points on the front and back and that they are in perfect condition. During more extreme recoveries there are additional techniques we apply to distribute the load, such as a bridle rope. This rope basically distributes the load between both towpoints. In which direction should i put my vehicle when i recover someone ? This will depend on a case to case basis: When during the recovery you want to have FULL visual of the car that you are recovering, it will make more sense to attach your rope to your front recovery towpoints. In the case the recovery needs a bit more force, and you have a towbar or stronger recovery points at the back, then it makes more sense to attach your rope to the rear towpoints or tow bar. In the case that you really want to see where your own car is going (in difficult terrain with bushes for example), it will also make sense to perform the recovery by attaching the rope to the back of the car. Can i attach my shackle or rope to a tow ball receiver ? Tow balls are NEVER to be used for recovery purposes. There have been many incidents where the tow ball has come off and became a deadly projectile. DO NOT ever recover a vehicle by connecting to the tow ball !!!

  24. Sorry man, definitely it is not 19 inch ground clearance πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ it’s a mistake, I meant it is 9 inches and most probably it is 8-9 and yes it has a switch to off road mode similar to the one in the photo attached (photo from the internet) Off road switch

  25. That one seems to be there all the time. My workshop is just around the corner. I’m guessing one of the Ramy employees owns it because it’s there so much. One of my neighbours at home had a Rexton with the 2.7 engine. He drove it for maybe 10 years with no problems outside regular servicing. It was a pretty good 4x4 with good spec and a nice bit of luxury for what was a relatively unknown brand. He said it was the same engine as the ML but all the parts were slightly changed so the only interchangeable parts between the Rexton and ML were the head studs, how true this is I don’t know. I always believed they had the same engine but he told me this and I never had enough interest to check and confirm or deny it.

  26. Thanks @amro elshafey for the vehicle information. Have you driven your Touareg before in sand? As per edmunds it show 7.9 inches of ground clearance, that means you "HAVE TO BE VERY CAREFUL" while desert driving even at this newbie level. If you have some removable bumper skirt with some clips or few bolts, I highly suggest to remove it before coming for your vehicle safety. Please make sure it has front and rear tow hook or screw in tow hook available, as they are mandatory for any off-road drive.

  28. Sorry to hear all about this non sense and spending money with a big question mark and a doubt in the end. There are ways to identify and troubleshoot almost everything before changing all the parts and going with the assumptions only. Anyways, first and foremost move the car to other competent garage who know what they are doing. 30 minutes compression test can reveal all 6 cylinders health and also if there is any tiny or big leak in the head gasket. Once that is identified, get the head gasket repaired and back trace the cause of such overheat in the first place, to prevent blowing head gasket again. P.S. Who ever repair the head gasket, must be able to give you written warranty that you can drive the same car in the desert again because over 90% "SHADY" garages will walk away when you ask them to write anything. Be careful this time.

  29. Those folding shovels are generally very small we are naming them spoon. You actually need to get a big shovel like the ones using at constructions. I bought mine from DIP for 15aed you can check below location. Rest of the equipment you got will be very helpful. https://goo.gl/maps/hYhN9Q3GB7evhQWs8

  32. Welcome to Carnity Offroad Club. You can buy most of the stuff from Dragon Mart as advised above by Frederic. Alternatively, you can buy better quality stuff from Speedex or ACE hardware like Shovel, Compressor etc. Flag and Shovel: AOR (American Offroad brand) Compressor: (Bushranger, TJM, Smittybilt etc.) Still for buying programmable radio you need to visit Dragon Mart. Motorola MT777 Crony 777 Baofeng UV5R P.S Please switch off the caps lock, as some people might consider ALL CAPS as shouting here.

  34. Yes, there were coins instead of a 4WD selector shift, I don't think coins will help in the middle of the desert. BTW @sertac Dubizzle does have short link at bottom as well. https://tnydu.biz/DOybZj

  38. @Lorenzo Candelpergher not only are you a licensed drone pilot but also a wonderful videographer, really enjoyed the video which seemed more beautiful the the actual day itself. Even the edits are so nicely done that I cannot make out where the video cuts off and looks so seamless. I will request @Frederic to start the photo, video drone club to have experts like you give us all hints and tips to grow and better ourselves in this art which seems to beautiful when put together like this.

  39. @Najeeb Mohammed if you used 4H-2 that's plenty of power and momentum for that dune. Then it's just a matter of approach. Don't worry, you'll perfect your trajectories with each drive.

  41. Welcome to the COVID 19 "new normal" lifestyle with restrictions and precautions for everyone safety. Moving forward and respecting authorities guidance all desert drives will be done under strict control. No Gathering | No Briefing | No BBQ | No Eating Together | No Touching | No Hugging MUST READ: Not following these rules and precautions = Not allowed to drive. We are only allowed to drive through the desert, as we are driving on the road now. So we will only do the desert driving just by sitting inside our cars at all the times and leave the drive without socializing or coming close to each other. Just like before we like to continue our desert drives through out the year, but this time we need your immense support to understand the strict control and to help everyone follow them all the time. How to maintain "STRICT" Social Distancing Meeting point will be set slightly (100m - 200m) inside the desert track. So, that you individually deflate your tires on the tarmac before reaching the meeting point. While deflating tires, stop cars 10 meters away from any other car. Drive signup on calendar will be closed on Thursday morning by 9 AM. Convoy numbering and briefing will be posted here on this drive post before 6 PM on Thursday. All participants need to read & acknowledge the briefing by clicking "Totally Agree" reaction Switch on your radio when you reach the meeting point on the set frequency advised by the trip lead in the critical briefing here. Once everyone reach to the meeting point, everyone stay inside the car at all the times. Trip lead will do the roll call, convoy numbering recap, critical briefing over the radio. Any suggestions or issues will be discussed over the radio too. You can also speak to other members through the radio only. So please make sure that your radio battery is fully charged. Once all set, trip lead will start the drive as before. Refusal and Recoveries with Social Distancing Every drive will have 1 lead Marshal and 1 or 2 supporting senior members/crew. Whenever there is a stuck or refusal, only Marshal / Senior Member / Crew is allowed to handle the situation. Everyone else including the stuck car driver, stay inside the car - AT ALL TIMES. Marshal / Senior Member / Crew is only allowed to step out to access the situation and do the recoveries: They will wear mask and gloves at all times when they are outside their car. They will try to help self recover through the radio guidance. If not they will use required recovery gear and do the needful (shovel, tug or winch, as required). If at any time Marshal require help, then only you are allowed to step out by wearing face mask and gloves at all times. Drive completion and inflation Now, there will not be any gathering or sitting down together for food-break like before. Once drive is finished, after reaching the tarmac, everyone is requested to move away 50-100 meters before starting their inflation. For drivers having no compressor, can head to the near by fuel station. If drive is ending at a place where there is no fuel station near by, then trip lead will inform in advance so that drivers having their own compressor can join only. 44. Hi @Pickey Singh As @Brette mentioned last weekend you can get a suction cup to put on your glass roof of the car so you can install an off-road flag. As you surely understand this is a mandatory requirement in the club so we can avoid incidents.

  45. Trip Report I know it is too late as @Wrangeld has already put his thoughts for this drive in words and that is a hard act to beat. I was excited just to be able to attend the drive after all the tough times I have had recently, and I was even more excited to maybe reach a bit early and have a little fun, but the Sharjah Police for some reason even after the curfew time had blocked the one road I was trying to use. They delayed me along with the few other cars trying to use the road, only after a little over 20 minutes did the cop car move and allow us through without a word exchanged, so really don't know what it was all about. This meant I was about 10 minutes late instead of my early arrival as anticipated. Kindly accept my sincere and humble apologies for delaying everybodies fun in this hot weather. Guilty as charged. As we were about to start it was brought to my attention that @andy_macdxb did not have a radio which put me in a difficult to send him back after having made it to the drive for safety reasons, however a quick help from @Mikhail Lukichev with his spare radio meant I was saved from this task. However keeping the Covid19 safety in mind I would appreciate it if everyone carries their own equipment, and in case of radios please take help if required to buy and set them before the drive to avoid any further delays. It is not advisable to share any equipment, food or drinks in these trying times, although this goes against everything we have been standing for in the club pre-Covid times. Once this Covid19 threat is eliminated we will be falling back to our nature of giving and sharing, but each one of us carries the responsibility to follow the Covid19 restrictions to their best. So thanks to @Srikumar for putting me in lead, I had @asifk as my second lead who did really well and the distance he maintained was perfect as he was not too close at any time and not far behind to loose me either. Behind him was @Janarthan who manged the whole drive with ease except for the last part, more dirt on that later in my report. @andy_macdxb was next followed by @Shiju Manuel and @Srikumar who was my centre forward. Than came @Jose Martin. @Szymon Stankiewicz, @Lorenzo Candelpergher, @Mikhail Lukichev, @sertac, @Nacho and swept by our very own @Jeepie. Since it has been over 2 months when I last lead a drive I started with some simple easy tracks to get used to the ups and downs of this terrain. Luckily this is one of my favourite terrains and once in I can lead a newbie, fewbie and at time an intermediate drive also. Just love this place, maybe not as much as Sweihan or Liwa or any tracks laced on the Al Ain highway, but you get the point. As I picked up the pace through the second part everyone kept up and since it was getting too quite I turned to our first play area. I was surprised to see everyone do so well, my pick of the day on the play area would be @asifk who managed to do it twice, as per my understanding it was his first time to do a sidey, he manged it nicely, not to high, not too low and well controlled at all times, he never seemed to be hassled by the maneuver. My second pick of the day goes to @Szymon Stankiewicz as with his Mitsubishi Montero sport he manged it so well, 10 extra points for him driving his Montero sport like that. Moving on we managed to reach to the power lines, from here things got interesting. We had a refusal and a pop-out which was well managed by @Srikumar and @Wrangeld. later we had some refusal in the same area so I made an alternate path, Everybody made it through and soon we had reached and crossed the power lines. As mentioned by @Wrangeld the dunes became more challenging all the way to the base of Fossil Rocks, but once everybody had crossed the difficult section everybody reached the top of Fossil Rocks to enjoy the serene atmosphere on top, With a quick brief we were descending the Fossil Rocks one by one with @Wrangeld to keep the traffic moving at the right pace. To my surprise I saw 3 beautiful ladies hiking down Fossil Rock on foot in what was already a hot day, as I reached the bottom I sparked a conversation with them and discovered they were air hostesses from Emirates Airline. As I appreciated them for the hike down in the heat, they were surprised how our cars could come down that way. One of them was interested in joining and buying vehicle suitable for light off-roading, camping and some beach trips. She has taken my number and I am waiting for her to call or Whatsapp me in order to suggest her to join Carnity. My only concern was with @andy_macdxb coming down as it seemed too fast and uncontrolled at times, I would highly recommend you to please understand your vehicle better. When i checked you were in 4 HLLC instead of 4 LLLC. Heading out after everyone had made it safely to the bottom there was a blaring on the radio to continue by playing on the left for 10 minutes. Against my better judgement the true off-roader took over and checking with @Srikumar I accepted the proposal. After a few tries the inevitable happened. This is the time to dig on dirt which I had spoken out earlier in my intro. @Janarthan in the H3 made it almost half way and took a sharp U-turn hitting the bump in the dune at the bottom, this resulted in a bent facial and a pop-out. Since it was in deep soft sand and in a slight slanting position we had to back him up slowly to a flat ground. As @Wrangeld mentioned it had popped out from both the exterior and the interior rim so our first part in trying was unsuccessful. Soon @Srikumar did what Gaurav bhai would have done, he removed the stem from the tire valve, kicked the tire till it was really soft and cleaned the rim from both the front and the back. He connected the most powerful air compressor and within 2 minutes it had popped in from the front first and within seconds the rear part also came on. Since we were going to drive on a track we left it inflated at 25 psi. This was the most comfortable part which lead us to the closest road, this prompted us to remove the flags before touching the road. As we hit the road we slowly drove to the Adnoc pump and started inflating to head back home. It was time to say good bye with a lot of gratitude to all for adding to this exciting trip and everyone is looking for their next adventure off-road. Such positive energy from all levels gives us extreme strength to carry on. Until next time I bid you farewell.

  46. Thanks @Gaurav, for the constant leadership, and thanks to the whole Carmity team, particularly the Marshals @Rahimdad for introducing me to the Club and inspiring me to pursue desert offroading, @Srikumar for my baptism as an absolute newbie (that first experience is what makes you come back), @Frederic for his constant and invaluable technical advice, and @Emmanuelfor testing me severely with my first unforgettable Fewbie drive (since that drive my girlfriend has preferred to stay home πŸ˜…). I also wish to thank some of the guys (and girl) with whom I have been sharing a similar off-roading growing path: @Xaf, @Shamil, @Wrangeld, @Jeepie, @Javier M and @Brette driving with you has both helped and challenged me to learn from each of your individual set of skills, allowing me to adapt and improve my own style. I cannot mention the whole community here, but surely I am grateful to all those with whom I have been driving: every time we go out, at any level of off-roading, it's a very valuable learning experience. I have grown to appreciate this unique community of people (off-roaders is just a small part of what all of us are), which I believe is unique in the UAE for its warmth and sense of collectivity. The way for all of us is forward, and I am happy to be heading forward with all of you.
