At the outset I would like to thank you for being part my first independent lead in Carnity offroad club. I assure you we will be having a lot of fun driving out there. Drive details: Location – on Al Ain road behind Skydive, we will be driving towards Margham, Lahbab and exit towards the pylon tracks which will ultimately take us back towards Al Ain road opposite Lisaili. Continue driving for about 200m once you reach the starting location shared and you will be arriving at the parking lot of Skydive where we will deflate and flag up.We will be doing a quick briefing and make the maximum out of the time in the desert driving. Climate – Expect it to be comfy, can be foggy early morning. Always better to leave a few minutes early so that you can drive safe. Sunrise around 6.17am (expected) Terrain – Small to Medium Dunes,long range, minimal plantation and bushes. Nonetheless there can be areas which will be technical needing your full attention and finesse. We will be doing more side sloping, ridge riding, criss crossing and technical areas. Technical areas are where your drive skills will be tested, as there is very little margin for error. You need to keep right distance from the car in front, right momentum and right approach. Towards the exit there are a lot of play areas with long range dunes, which of course we can enjoy as much depending on the convoy response and how early we reach there. See up close – Camel farms, Falconers, Gazelles and something which will be described on the drive! Exit – onto Al Ain road where there are gas stations at close distance, but better to inflate and drive on the highway. See you all on Saturday morning!

Another Application you can check out is Gaia GPS. I use All Trails one because I have a pro subscription - not sure why I took it 🤔 - perhaps because it shows few off-road tracks in UAE unlike Gaia. @Frederic done this post on it.

In general, the majority of people in the UK take care of their cars and service them properly. There are still plenty of shitboxes but that is to be expected anywhere. Rust will be your biggest enemy so check everywhere. If you see a small rust spot, chances are that it will go deeper. The problem is that the roads are salted in winter and the salt eats the metal. If I drive through a salted area, I used to quickly run a hose around the wheel arches and sills before I put the car to bed. Also be wary buying cars in seaside towns as they are prone to rust also. If you are planning to keep a car for a while, waxoyl is your friend. Use due diligence when checking mileages as clocking is rife. On the plus side, you will find the majority of mechanics are of better quality than UAE as most have them will have gone to technical college rather than learning on the job jugad.

Dear Desertnauts, time to provide some information about this coming Friday's Newbie drive. While most drives in Qudra start near Qudra Lakes or from Solar Park, we have chosen to start from an alternative point, along the road to Bab al Shams. This is the western quadrant of the Qudra area, which is characterized by long sets of open white sand dunes, sometimes separated from each other by small technical areas (where the dunes are lower but closer, and call for a more careful navigation and a more controlled style of driving). The area is also still a part of the Al Marmoon Conservation Area, so it will present the opportunity to drive by a few feeding and watering stations for gazelles and oryxes, which we hope to be able to see along our route. Part of the drive will take place in areas with quite an abundant low, bushy vegetation, while we may will also encounter some solitary thorny trees, both near the start and toward our exit point. The skills we will be able to practice will be straight crossing of dunes and controlled side-sloping, all at a leisurely pace. We will take some time during the drive to give a technical briefing on some of these skills, and more. Thank you for your advices @Barry, @Rahimdad and @Wrangeld. Seasonal tyres are also a common practice in Turkey, I had a few experiences to know that winter tyres are crucial on minus degrees. One more question, of course it will differ from car to car but do cars get abused by users or climate like in the UAE. Should I be avoiding getting an old car? The best way to learn is to document the event ( that’s why I record almost my entire trip when Possible ) and revise the relevant event ) ... in the first video I think main reason of my refusal was lack of proper momentum and I knew it by saying it in the the recovery one. the second refusal or stuck also lost momentum because I deviated from the proper curve and by the time Brette already passed I was aiming at his trajectory that my X was not in line with it any more , in other words , I was in a situation to fight gravity with lower momentum in an already churned terrain . As a result got stuck . i realize later in the trip when we were going up hill I was about to get into the same situation , instead turned down the bowel , circled twice till I got through but didn’t stop at all ( unfortunately that part was not recorded ) ! I cant open the link, but seeing the url saying Pajero Evolution then I'll be your best friend, whenever I visit my brother in London. On a serious note, these exotic will be super expensive to buy and maintain and plus with regular usage it will cost 5-10 times on maintenance than any other choices.

Dear Desertnauts. A few tidbits to wet your appetite before this Saturday's Intermediate drive. We are looking to execute a fast paced drive, starting from 2 December Cafeteria, climbing one side of Pink Rock, to circle it and dive into the red sand plateau that separates it from Big Red, and Badayer's entry point. In fact, the plan is to extend the drive to Badayer's pyramid dunes, skipping from one to the next, across the technical areas that separate each group, until it's time to head back to Badayer Shops. Even though this area's most famous attractions are Iftar Bowl and Super Bowl, we'll focus on some of the other, un-named, pyramids, to the west of our entry point, looking to enjoy surfing in and out of them, up and down their tall slopes. @Najeeb Mohammed, @Lorenzo Candelpergher, @Rinelle Sanaani, @Jun Zamora, @Yousef Alimadadi and @Mehmet Volga, be concentrated, be motivated, be ready to have some good fun, riding as a single unit on this red sand playground. Pink Rock is a great newbie terrain with low wide dunes in the lead up to more challenging pyramid dunes close to the base of the rock. The sand color is also red/pink which makes picking out the route when following the convoy a little easier than around Qudra, where the glare from the sand early in the morning sometimes makes for more difficult driving. What to expect on a Pink Rock drive? The plan is to challenge you with a lot of practice of driving up and over dunes, to start drivnig along the side of the dunes (and slipping) to find our way through taking the higest point in the dunes to cross from one range to the next. Depending on convoy performance we will push the pace and push the complexity, but newbie is all about learning and relearning the skills to take you further and further into the desert. DRIVE REPORT First and foremost my apologies for delayed trip report. It's always amazing to see so many new faces and beautiful cars ready to taste the sand for the first time, make me truly excited and honored. Almost everyone was on or before time, thank you very much for that as it helps to get started with right mood. As many of you have asked me same question, during and after the drive about your car and required modifications. I just like to explain that why we recommend every car owner to drive at least 4-5 drives before thinking about any mods, so that you can actually identify the real bottleneck by yourself to spend time and money. Spending money on off-road mods is an endless pit and before falling in the trap of off-road garages or hearsay theories of chip tune up, suspensions, exhaust, air filter etc. you need to do thorough research on what do you actually expect from that mod. Try to understand its real need based on cost vs benefit vs reliability. And to truly understand it's need you need to test your vehicle for few drives, before jumping to any expensive conclusions. For Carnity newbie level drives, you don't need any mods instead use these 5 or maybe more newbie drives to learn the art of off-roading to correct your lines (MOST IMPORTANT), techniques and vehicle handling. Learning the skills is very important, as there is no replacement of off-road skills and once you start developing yourself you will realize that in stock state you can do wonders. Most of the seniors here driving stock 4x4 for a reason as they are far more reliable than highly modified rigs, that need every week mechanic attention. @Kaushal Prithwani and @Ahab Shamaa you both have the best offroad vehicles in a very good state, simply focus on your off-road drives and your SWB Y61 and FJC are perfect to take you to the Intermediate level without any issues. @Sai Baskaran and @GauravSoni we have so many stock Pajero here, apart from rear bumper scooping and occasional transmission light popping you should be fine with your cars too. Search both issues solution here and you will able to tackle them easily. @Mostafa Ismail you were pretty happy and good with your Prado and keep it that way, just be careful of front bumper and keep enjoying this beautiful vehicle off-road with luxury. @DeepakADS @Terence Sequeira and @Hussien Elleithy keep enjoying your beautiful trucks, being an extra LWB trucks are relatively difficult to handle in the beginning, but once you get hang of it, you will glide them nicely and take them everywhere. They have enough power and grunt for loads of smile. @Omar Al-khoori and @Arshad Roojee SWB wranglers are absolute fun for off-roading and I hope you have enjoyed them a lot. Arshad with heavy tires sometime transmission struggles, but try deflate to 12 PSI in next drive and see if it still display the hot oil message. If it still does, start with A/T oil quality and level check. Then get the transmission oil cooler, if its not there in your model (slightly involved job). If its there then add the oil cooler fan (easy fix). Big thanks to @Jeepie for supporting this drive and helping everyone with great patience and knowledge. EXPLORATION DRIVE "SEA TO MOUNTAIN" COMPLETED - Trip Report Fog, crispy wet sand, un-scalable dunes, free ranging camels, wild donkeys, longitudinal (Seif) dunes that suck your car down into their molasses-like sand, and, most amazingly, wide open plain areas with the look and feel of a savannah. This are some of the amazing situations and sights we found and saw during this first ever exploration of this un-named area, between the new Ritz-Carlton Al Wadi Desert Resort and the farming/industrial village of Al Ghail. Fog was the protagonist of the first hour of the drive. It hung on the whole area like a blanket, with visibility of less than 20 meters. Tired of waiting for it to clear, we ventured off the marked track, only to be bounced back on that same track by an un-scalable sand wall, made very slippery by the thin layer of wet sand on top, and at the same time very sticky by the soft sand underneath. Hence, we followed the marked track around the first group of dunes, very careful not to lose ourselves, having to venture out of the car at times, to take a better look at the many pockets and unseen drops that suddenly materialized in front of the lead. With only a stuck and a few refusals, and having to re-route only a couple of times, we finally found our way out of the fog, to emerge in an area inhabited by free ranging camels and wild donkeys, and characterized by stunning longitudinal dunes (or Seif), a few kilometers long and separated from each other by vegetation-rich stretches of flat land. The first and second sets of these amazing dune formations were divided by the greatest surprise of the whole drive: two huge sabkha areas with a completely flat and smooth surface made of an almost black hard soil, dotted with lonely acacia trees. Beautiful places for camping, in fact one of these "savannahs" was occupied by a small group of locals training their falcons. Here we rounded up our cars in a circle around a giant tree, for a quick stretch and to allow Najeeb to play with his drone, (which was luckily spared by the falcons 😅). From here we progressed toward the tarmac road which separates the industrial area of Al Ghail from its farming district. After crossing the tarmac we proceeded into the last stretch of the drive: a small but interesting plateau, full of intricate and very soft yellow dunes (some of which with hugely tall, Liwa-like, slip faces), which ends abruptly where the desert literally slams into the dark foothills of the Hajar Mountains. We could finally say: Mission accomplished. Thanks to all the Explorers who joined this "blindfolded" drive: @Wrangeld and @Jeepie, for advising me on a couple of tricky re-directions, which surely saved us a lot of headaches and precious time, @Yousef Alimadadi and @Jun Zamora for showing excellent control and continuing to show impressive progress in their driving skills, @Pancho for relaying all radio information to the back side of the convoy (even adding some personal touches and interpretations to the messages, that kept the whole convoy entertained), @Desert Dweller for managing to drive extremely well even at that horrific hour (it must have felt like sleep-walking) and @Foxtrot Oscar for sharing the ride and drive with Jamy, bringing her enthusiasm and energy along, @Najeeb Mohammed for documenting his first Advance trip from the sky, and finally @Kalahari, who took the sweep's position in great stride, and perhaps felt at home on a terrain which, in places, greatly reminds of some parts of South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. At the end, we drove for 60.3 Km, in 3:44 hours, at an average speed of 16 Km/h (22 Km/h while moving), and reaching from a lowest altitude of -63 m under the sea level to 230 meters (with almost 1 Km of total climb). Looking forward to the next Exploration drive (somewhere out there there are still little visited stretches of desert waiting for us), I wish you all a great week. No worries. It's very much appreciated. We'll soon post this drive again, as we now know that it can be adjusted also to a Fewbie level. There are several ways to cross a dune. We always start with the easiest which is straight up and straight down. Slowly but surely we test your side slopping technique and control. Once we feel you earned a reputation for doing it cleanly comes the most thrilling part which is criss crossing a dune. It is scary at first, but like everything else once you have perfected your technique you'll be craving for these opportunities. The one on one training is to help you conquer your fear and be more confident with the dos and donts of these tricks and more. You are most welcome to sign up for a module or the discounted 4 hours session to improve on your skills. @Ale Vallecchi is right in pointing out that the video posted is for extreme drives. But once you have done a few intermediate drives this will be a piece of cake you won't be able to live without.

@Kalahari I think you did very well. You did not show much hesitation at all. Surely, I feel there is always an element of uncertainty when you crest a dune, but it becomes less prominent in your mind as you practice more. The reference of the car in front of you certainly helps a lot, and with time the correct ways to approach, cross and exit a dune crest become more natural. Also, each car requires a certain type of feeling with the driver for her/him to become more secure in completing a criss-cross. So practicing (learning on the fly) is almost unavoidable. The clip you show is very advanced in my opinion, due the height of the dunes, their sharpness/inclination, and the speed (and control) required to sustain such ridge riding and crossing for so long. Of course the courses are thought to provide the opportunity to learn the technique, as you mention. But we can also find the opportunity to post a drive which can be almost entirely dedicated to the subject. That will provide the necessary repetitions that even after taking a tutorial will always be needed to go from theory to practice.
