If the desert could sing, Pink Rock and Tawi Nawza were calling us all this morning with the first cool start to a drive in living memory - OK maybe not that long, but after driving through the summer months it was really quite a shock to feel cool sand as we deflated and put our flags up to start the drive. We started the morning with the unexpected stuff - radios not working how they should, a forgotten radio - but we got moving quite quickly and were quick into the sand and our first recovery, which was, of course YT! Sometimes, when you are looking for the perfect line (and making sure your sweep finds you) you lose concentration for that split second. And then we were under way again. Up and down, across the top of the dunes and making good progress. And progress is the key workd about today's drive. Everyone made progress and improved something. How did that come about? By practicing those crests and descents again and again. Yes, people got stuck, but that's the idea. You have to practice that feeling of giving just enough gas to get over a crest again and again to gain the confidence of knowing that you can make it. We got stuck in soft sand, and we saw that with a little bit of digging here and there, it's possible to drive the car straight out of trouble. We did a few descents so that everyone got the feel of how the power in their car is delivered and what you need to do to get up that hill! I was really impressed by a few of the drivers for whom this really was just their second outing with Carnity - @Gijo Javob, @Kaushal Prithwani in particular did really well (and I hope that the family members enjoyed the ride as well). @luwaimn was excellent as second lead, redirecting when neeeded, giving warning and making sure that the convoy kept up and kept moving and was excellent in helping on so many of the recoveries. @Hardik Mody it looks to me that you have a similar issue with your Montero as aflicts the Pajero that it shifts into a higher gear, just when you want it not to. Tiptronic might help with that, but it gives you something else to think about on top of everything else. @RAKIN KURIAKOSE a really good outing for you with good learning because you got stuck and I hope you really felt how the sand sucks you in if you are not careful. @SureshVNair that Rubicon is a beast and Ithink you are starting to understand just how much fun it can be once you tame it. @[email protected] and @Ahab Shamaa our FJs at the rear. The FJ is a really capable car and what I see is that you started out a little tentative and were not sure if the sand wanted to play, but by the end of the day, especially when there's time to play, it's a great feeling to be in control of the car and your emotions and just go for it. @Andrei ... it was all going so well until the clutch got fried. I hope you get it sorted and we see you back out again. Off roading with a manual is a particular skill that takes time to develop. There really was music going on today, with the sound of the engines of our cars getting a work out for the first time in a while. Some beautiful notes were played and with you as the orchestra to a wonderful symphony. Thanks also for the excellent team work that was shown today. We never leave anyone behind, so it was important to make sure Andrei was with us. More importantly, the offers of help when needed are really appreciated. Were it not for COVID I promise a lot more of you would be involved in recoveries. So many offered today, we truly had an embarassment of riches. In the end, however, it was @Lorenzo Candelpergher who did a brilliant job of saving the day and saving many of us from the sand. We can all feel secure knowing that he has our backs. Looking forward to seeing you all again soon in the sand.

Dear @Wrangeld, Every drive in the desert is an opportunity for learning something new. Today's lesson for me was about how not to forget my radio again: 1. Keep on using that check list you prepared long ago as a newbie not to forget anything of the many things needed for a desert drive. 2. Never change which plug you connect your radio charger to.. 😂 😂. The few neurons on early morning duty may not be the same ones of the evening before and may not know about the change. 3. Both lessons above apply especially when you wake up at 5am and skip your morning caffeine shot. After sharing this FUNDAMENTAL learning, I must say I enjoyed today's ride very much, also because it reminded me of my very first Absolute Newbie Carnity drive back in March at Pink Rock. Arriving late due to my forgotten radio made me miss the magic of watching the sunrise, which is one of the morning desert driving rituals I like the most. I was unforgivably late, having driven an extra 100km to get back home and retrieve my radio, but luckily @Wrangeld entertained everyone in my absence performing a pretend stuck in order to let me reach the convoy and make a pretend spectacular entrance to tug him out.. 😂😂 The drive continued very smoothly, with very few stucks and refusals, which were however great learning opportunities. Only the experience of getting crested a few times will eventually let every driver get the feeling of how much power is needed to get past the dune and overcome that moment of hesitation when one lifts the foot a bit too early. The same applies to self-recoveries: it is only by seeing with one's own eyes how powerful shoveling can be in getting out of nasty stucks that one will learn how not to be too easily relying on a friend's tug. I think @Ahab Shamaa , whom I could watch driving very well his FJ in front of me, had further interesting learning today: if you loose visual sight of the car in front of you, you may end up following the wrong tracks and lose the convoy. If you stay too close, on the opposite, especially when crossing a dune when again you don't have visual sight, you may find yourself definitely way too close and risk an impact. Always look at the flags! When we finally made it to Pink Rock we found ourselves in a Sheikh Zayed Road traffic scenario, with convoys coming, going and stopping everywhere and infinite tracks, bumpy and soft sand but we had anyway a good time at the playground. Towing @Andrei's jeep out to the main road was a must and a personal pleasure: at Carnity I've learned helping your drive companions is really a fundamental part of the sport as much as the driving itself may be. It was a wow kind of drive I enjoyed it myself and i hope also participant enjoyed as well. I can`t thank enough for the support of @Rahimdad and @Nivin also @Luca Palanca Falsini did amazing job as a second lead. I decide to basically skip the Mahafiz part. Mostly we drove on the flat track without any action. I wanted to save the time for most precious play areas. We 2 did lots of playing and made some photography and drone shooting. Thanks to @Ajiesh George Kannankara From there we head to Fossil Rock but we couldnt pass it due to no sand on the rocks, it would be dangerous. Since we were there early we headed to Faya and played on the nice dune formations. Finally we reached to the Faya and everyone found chance to try to climb. After that another crazy group came and took over the place, we decided to exit. Thank you all for your participation. All of you did amazing, no stuck except me and few refusals only.

Most Mitsubishi Pajero owners might have heard about the 4WD Super Select II system, which is the control system on their Pajero 4x4. There are a lot of misconceptions on what mode to use in the desert, and the use of differential locks. Below I will describe the functionality of the 4WD Super Select II system and how to use it for offroading in the UAE sand. Also, we will talk about the use of differential locks (center and rear) functionality, when needed. Your Pajero equipped with the 4WD Super Select system has 4 modes. Switching between 2H and 4H can be done while driving (max 100km/h). If you need to switch to 4Hlc or 4Llc you will need to stop the vehicle, put it in Neutral, then select the desired gear. 2H - 2 Wheel Drive This mode is for dry highway roads only, and will slightly reduce road noise and fuel consumption. 4H - 4 High This mode is the one we generally use for offroading in the dunes on most levels. The Viscous Coupling System distributes the power to the front and back based on the condition of the terrain (33% front / 67% rear). 4Hlc: Instead of the viscous coupling used in 4H, this mode locks the front and rear wheels together at a 50/50 ratio. (Center Diff lock) This mode can be used for more advanced offroading or soft areas when required. This mode is not for on-road driving !! 4LLC: - 4 Low with Lock Center differential This mode is used for self-recovery, steep hill climb, and descending from very steep slopes only. The maximum speed you should use 4Llc is 30km/h. Driving beyond 30km/h in Low gear will damage the gearbox sooner or later and should be avoided at all times. The well known Omani hack puts the car in limp mode, and can only be used in Low gear, hence is not recommended to be used if you go beyond this maximum speed. Rear Differential Lock Some Pajero models come with the R/D Lock or Rear Differential Lock. This option can be activated during your self recovery. How does it work ? In normal situations, your rear differential is "open". This means the rear left and rear right wheels can turn at different speeds, and this is necessary because of the speed difference when turning your wheels on the road. When the rear differential is open, and you are stuck in the sand with one rear wheel free, and one rear wheel stuck, ALL the power will go to the wheel that is free, hence recovery is quite difficult. Engaging your R/D lock will lock both wheels on the rear axle (like it becomes one solid axle). So even when your one wheel is free, it will still send power to the wheel that is stuck. The Rear Differential Lock is very useful, but not a MUST HAVE. It will come standard on the 3.8 Models. Drive Mode or Tiptronic Mode As you learn offroading, we generally advise you to keep the car in "D". The reason is that we want you to focus on the terrain and let the car think for you which gear it should take. Once you start entering higher level drives, you might find that the gearbox is a bit slow in reacting, or that it is upshifting or downshifting at the wrong time. This is not always the fault of your transmission, but could also be yourself who is quite nervous with the throttle pedal, making it hard for the car to decide what you want. As a result during offroading the transmission will be constantly shifting and during hot days this will lead to overheating. Tiptronic mode gives you as a driver full control over which gear you want to select. Initially this takes a bit of practice, but soon you will see that you'll be able to keep the car better controlled by choosing the right gear and keeping it in that gear as much as you can. For example during offroading you can keep it in 2nd gear, and shift back to 1st gear whenever you need to tackle a dune. As you can see, the Pajero has a lot of functionalities that might be confusing at the start, but once you start using them it will become clear that the Super Select II 4WD system is one of the best systems for 4WD on the market since a long time.

My daughter loved the drive all-together and somehow is confident that we will be coming next Friday too. @Andrei , great job slaying the dunes. We were a great 3 peddle team! Wow! What a wonderful drive 😀 When I got home, I wouldn’t shut up about how much I enjoyed it despite my family’s efforts to quiet me down 😂 A big thanks goes out to @Wrangeld and @Lorenzo Candelpergher for helping us out, teaching us and being patient with us. Towing the Jeep was really commendable and puts in practice the “no man left behind” concept. The Noobs were also wonderful, and I learned a lot from my fellow riders. As already mentioned, with the goal to shoot professional drone footage over Pink Rock at dawn, we'll anticipate the meeting time at 2 December Cafereria at 5:30AM SHARP. We'll deflate quickly and climb PR to wait for the sun to rise. Then we'll head toward Big Red (ant "The Big Dune Before Big Red") through the dunes' plateau, and after crossing the tarmac road, we'll head into Badayer proper, looking for a couple of suitable bowls to ride, while the drone will work its magic. Since I was a kid, my father used to take me to events, and now I do the same with my son, cars are so part of my life that it took the main role, I started to buy and sell for fun and it became my main source of income, and now to complete I just also opened a garage... If you struggle with programming the channels, you can write them down and just type in the frequency which will be used on the keypad: Channel 1: 446.00625 Mhz Channel 2: 446.03125 Mhz Channel 3: 446.05625 Mhz Channel 4: 446.08125 Mhz Channel 5: 462.88750 Mhz If your radio does not accept these frequencies, have a look at the STEP frequency setting that should be set to 6.25 KHz. The Crony you mentioned is a very good professional model but not that very often used in off-road clubs.

THIS DRIVE IS NOW CLOSED. We will be using Carnity Radio Channel #1. Please make sure your radio is pre preprogrammed to this frequency. So that we can start the drive as quickly as possible please arrive on time (or early) and when you arrive, please can you: Deflate your tires to 13PSI. Put up your offroad flag. Make sure your ABS/traction controls are off. Put the car into 4H We are very lucky to have quite a short convoy for a Newbie drive so will be able to challenge ourselves to take advantage of that. I will be supported by @Lorenzo Candelpergher on the drive, but as we do not have a formal centre forward on this drive, we will be looking for you to self recover as much as possible during the drive and will be giving a lot of attention to helping anyone who gets stuck recover without being tugged or towed. We will brief more on this before teh drive leaves. Looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow. It promises to be a lovely cool start to the day, so let's take abvantage of the fact that the crust of the sand will be nice a crackly and get moving before the sand starts to get soft and busy. At the outset I would like to thank you for being part my first independent lead in Carnity offroad club. I assure you we will be having a lot of fun driving out there. Drive details: Location – on Al Ain road behind Skydive, we will be driving towards Margham, Lahbab and exit towards the pylon tracks which will ultimately take us back towards Al Ain road opposite Lisaili. Continue driving for about 200m once you reach the starting location shared and you will be arriving at the parking lot of Skydive where we will deflate and flag up.We will be doing a quick briefing and make the maximum out of the time in the desert driving. Climate – Expect it to be comfy, can be foggy early morning. Always better to leave a few minutes early so that you can drive safe. Sunrise around 6.17am (expected) Terrain – Small to Medium Dunes,long range, minimal plantation and bushes. Nonetheless there can be areas which will be technical needing your full attention and finesse. We will be doing more side sloping, ridge riding, criss crossing and technical areas. Technical areas are where your drive skills will be tested, as there is very little margin for error. You need to keep right distance from the car in front, right momentum and right approach. Towards the exit there are a lot of play areas with long range dunes, which of course we can enjoy as much depending on the convoy response and how early we reach there. See up close – Camel farms, Falconers, Gazelles and something which will be described on the drive! Exit – onto Al Ain road where there are gas stations at close distance, but better to inflate and drive on the highway. See you all on Saturday morning!
