Dear Desertnauts. Just a quick few words about what's to come this Friday. As mentioned in the drive's post, the goal is to show that Qudra, the place usually chosen because of the possibility to enjoy its low dunes at sunset, and its lakes for picnics, our usual introductory ground to off-roading, has several surprises to offer, even for the more advanced drivers. Most of the itinerary, surely the first part, will be the same as the one we use for the Absolute Newbie drives. The differences, here, will be the speed and the skills we'll adopt: faster, and including criss-crossing and ridge riding. With the goal of completing the AN drive in a much shorter time, what will be left of our planned 3 or so hours, will still be driven in challenging terrain, likely to the south of the bike track, close to the pylons, and possibly all the way to Solar Park, or even beyond it. I am always intrigued by @Lorenzo Candelpergher speed to call him admiringly flying Lorenzo. The continuous ridge riding and criss crossing kept us over alert. I was glad to be # 3 on the convoy behind @Gok Krish who was superbly tailing the lead. What was surprisingly to have @Wrangeld a Marshall behind me as #4 an added pleasant pressure to ensure that I do not commit any mistakes. At times the sands loosened up and one has to re attempt the climb, earlier I used to use brute strength and high momentum during my Pajero days, now with my new FJ it it becomes easier also with experience resign to the fact that there is no loss of face if one attempts again as long as the driver behind you is alerted. Everyone in the driver pitched in to make this a high paced drive.

Good morning! I have lots of experience as a passenger in Liwa dunes and drove a bit there before with my partner who is pretty experiences. I did a desert driving night class with Asif last week, which I loved and encouraged me to join the group! I have a Mitsubishi Pajero 2011, but my low range gear is not working so can I still come on the drive? I also don't have a radio yet... but I can get one today, as well as a flag. I have a compressor etc.

My 3.8 pajero already sounds like supersonic ✈️…..

Hi Gregory, I drive with Geolander G0 15 in the front and Dunlopp in the back and deflate to 9,5 on all of them. But better to start at 12 or 11 and deflate further when you need to.

Absolutely you can bring your friends and family after your first absolute newbie drive, as far as you comply with NCEMA regulation for Covid precautions.

@GregoryI drive with Cooper A/T and normally run around 11 and seems to work though I have bead lockers so less likelihood of any pop outs so the rims are something you should also consider.

DRIVE REPORT Dear Desert Wanderers, I've always loved riding ridges and crests, especially when dunes are high, as being able to control the car in such conditions and finding the guts needed to keep pushing it even further gives a great sense of accomplishment. Well for sure yesterday, at the end of 3h spent restlessly riding ridges and crests, we certainly felt accomplished... The challenge of the day was riding 100+ crests in 3h, that is, on average something like one crest every 100 seconds.. When I set the target I was honestly not sure it could be done, as I had no previous benchmarks from my past drives, but after I spent some time analysing our track, I can tell we went way above 100, as I counted approx 140 crests, not counting at all (as I had originally planned) very long crests as multiple crests on the basis of their actual lenght in multiples of 50m. We were super punctual, to the extent that by exactly 5:00am we were ready to go, after the briefing. We crossed the sabkha on the south east side of the pylon track and made our way into the sand with very minimal light, relying mostly on our own car lights to have a decent visibility of the way ahead. Not even 5 mins into the drive, @Gok Krish experienced his first cresting, quickly towed back by @GauravSoniafter we realized shoveling was not the option.. As we moved ahead, fiercely riding on top of any rideable ridge or crest, the convoy started to get accustomed to the leitmotiv of the day, and the fun began. We went though the initial long range dunes with meticolous precision not to leave behind any crest unridden, which resulted in a very nice zig-zag, making sure we avoided the tricky rock formations that populate the area: We then moved north east, and reached the two big play areas where I usually like to have a couple of rounds: It was in this area where we had to winch out @MUHAMMAD Kashif RAZZAQ's jeep from a bad stuck and soon after @GauravSoni got tricked into a tight bowl from where he had to be winched out by @Kailas. As we made our way fourther North, our zig-zag took us to the Mighty Dunes in Lisaili where we kept riding crest, but this time with a view from an elevated position. It was soon after that thay we had to say goodbye to @Wrangeld, who had to head out though the nearest sabkha back to Love Lakes as @Jeepie's car, that Richard had stolen overnight, was showing an engine error light. The several refusals experienced during the drive showed everyone how tricky it can be to ride ridges/crests where all of a sudden you may find with your car on the belly and your wheels in the air.. Luckily all refusals were easily recovered and we could complete our drive all the way north to the long range dunes in Lisaili, before exiting on the pylon track and eventually reaching the tarmac close to Lisaili Fort. Riding so many ridges / crests in a raw surely polished everyone's skills, especially when we had the chance of repeated criss-crossings to change the side of the dune while still staying with two wheels on one side and two on the opposite side, depending on the curvature of the dune. All of this while we all definitely had loads of fun. Everyone did well yesterday: @Gok Krishwas a perfect 2nd lead, @Ashok chaturvedifollowed with great focus, with the extra pressure of being tailed by a Marshal, @Wrangeld, who in turn seemed to finally enjoy an Intermediate drive after so many Newbie ones.. @varunmehndiratta had a chance to test more deflated tires (it went well apparently), @Ahab Shamaa enjoyed his 3rd drive with me in the lead in the last 6 days, @MUHAMMAD Kashif RAZZAQ once again joined the drive in style, as always with a twin uniform for himself and his son. I didn't have eyes on @GauravSoni and @Dodi Syahdarat the back, so I'll be curious to read their comments here. @Kailas was a great Sweep at the back, allowing me to relax during refusals and recoveries as I knew he had everything under control. Great drive, great fun, great convoy. Thanks to everyone and especially the Seniors in support. See you soon in the sand again (after a short summer break to Europe, in my case..).

@Ale Vallecchiyour drive brief, pre brief, drive directions, post drive report are equally eye catching like your leading the drive on sand. I love all your exploratory drive theam, planning, execution and exit. As usual it was wonderful and refreshing mid week drive. It is assured that your mid week drives defeats the heat of the sun and is full of fun, thrill and learning. Thanks to the entire convoy for being part of the fun drive.

Yeahhh otherwise what do you do with the other hand?? one day we will let you know how we drive, shift gears and talk on the walkie at the same time 🤣

Thank you @Ale Vallecchi for the drive yesterday. The perfect afternoon escape in the middle of the week ! These double sided soft crests were tricky, but excellent opportunity to exercise balance and momentum. And the timing was perfect, with the arrival at the Murqab mosque in the evening light! @PaoloMaraziti, thank you for the footage, that little grey FJ looks like a toy car having a lot of fun 😄😂 !!

I think that the experience will be quite different with the Montero - if only because the ground clearance will in the end allow you to get to places that were challenging for the RR because of the ride height and the low profile tires. In any case looking forward to your arrival on Friday.

I felt a good difference post changing the fuel pump, but not a game changer. the mechanic says it might be one of the gear output chips, but to be honest i am not sure.However, this is not the reason as i will ship the car to Jordan today where i will spend 5 weeks driving around the country northern mountains and southern desert (Wadi Rum). if you are planning to come along give me a buzz

Hi Vikas, The absolute Newbie drive is for people that have never driven before with Carnity. Can I ask you please to sign out of this drive and join one of the other newbie drives that will be taking place on Friday This one still has space on it. With the tremendous increase in the number of COVID cases in the UAE, we all have to be responsible while off-roading. Failing to abide by any single precaution at any time during the drive, will result in an immediate ban from Carnity Off-road Club. ZERO TOLERANCE First offender - 1 Month Ban. Second offender - 3 Month Ban. Third offender - lifetime ban and report to authorities. COVID19 PRECAUTIONS 2.0 All Carnity off-road drives will be LIMITED to driving only: No Socializing and gathering allowed at any time. No break for taking photos, breakfast, smoking, etc. No exchanging of off-road or recovery gears. Wear a mask at all times, while outside your vehicle. For passengers restrictions, follow RTA or NCEMA guidelines. All passengers should be inside the car, at all times. Maintain a minimum of 2-meter social distance at all times. Sanitize your hands and recovery gear after use. PS1. If you and your passenger cannot sit inside your vehicle for 3-4 hours please DO NOT JOIN CARNITY DRIVES. PS2. A Member who has RSVP the drive is RESPONSIBLE and LIABLE for their passenger's compliance. PS3. The above precautions apply to everyone irrespective of their vaccination status or schedule. PS4. You can confidentially submit the photo of any offender by sending an email to [email protected]. How to comply Read the drive post before arriving at the meeting point, so that you know your convoy numbering and radio channel. Arrive at the meeting point and switch on your radio to the pre-set frequency of the drive. Stop your vehicle at least 10-20 meters away from each other. Deflate your tires, while wearing a mask, and then go back inside your car. All briefings will be done on the radio now, so pay full attention to a briefing for your own safety. After the briefing, fall in your convoy position just before the drive starts. While driving if you get stuck, announce on the radio and be inside your car at all times. Trip lead and/or support will guide you on the radio for self-recovery or tow-rope recovery. While there is a stuck or a refusal, everyone else supposed to be inside their car at all times. You can only take a bio-break during the drive, by requesting trip lead permission. Once the drive is over exit out to inflate by maintaining 10-20 meters distance from each other. While inflating, only the driver supposed to be out and with the face mask at all times. After the drive, you can talk on the radio for any feedback, suggestions or help you need.
