Amici Miei: La Zingarata - Drive Report "Wherever you go, go with all your heart" - Rumi What a joy to re-discover, at least for myself, portions of Qudra that I had visited during my first drives with Carnity, but had avoided for quite some time, due to traffic congestion. It was impressive to see how the warm season (keeping drivers away) and some strong winds (remodeling the dunes' surfaces) have managed to restore this well beaten terrain to an almost virgin state. It was great to take the 12 gypsies who showed up for the "Zingarata" - the unplanned, wandering drive - around the newly chiseled dunes, following a series of visual markers: the pylons, always looming to the south, the antenna marking the Endurance Farm next to Bab al Shams, a group of trees growing in the technical dunes between Qudra North and Qudra South, and finally the glass pyramid marking of Solar Park's Innovation Center. A meandering track covered in leaps and bounds, with bursts of fast driving, mixed with refusals and stucks, that signaled the mix of a relaxed attitude by the convoy (occasionally underestimating the terrain's apparent easy features), and the actual degree of difficulty posed by some slopes, crests and bowls (especially for the back of the convoy). No matter how downplayed Qudra may be by the off-roaders' community, which considers it an easy ground for more advanced drivers, it still manages to hide some nice ridges and bowls that, if taken at good speed, can offer a higher degree of difficulty, as well as some pleasant technical areas, where each car's maneuverability and responsiveness can be put to the test. In the middle, the sighting of a group of oryx climbing dunes, as well as large and small herds of gazelles, as well as a couple of moments dedicated to some stretching and chit-chatting. The full itinerary, from Qudra's Last Exit to Solar Park's Innovation Center, covered 58 Kms, driven in 2:04 hours (plus 48 minutes of stops), at an average moving speed of 28 Km./h. Well driven by all members, with @Ashok chaturvedi taking Second Lead's (and First Photographer's) responsibilities, and @Trekado, @RiaanJH (nicely executed first FB+ track), @Santoso Marjuki, @Senthil Kumar, @Alexanderrr (assisting from the middle of the convoy), @DP1011 , Deepak wrangler, @Lucky sAm (looking forward to see you in your new vehicle) and @Shaker safely shepherded by @JeromeFJ in Sweep. Dear Sand Sailors Thanks for RSVPing for the drive. Hope you all are keeping safe from rising COVID cases as well as rising temp. I have been travelling and missed the last weekend on sand, so i am really looking forward to Sunday and to be back in desert. Action plan - plan for the drive is very simple. We meet next to Spicy village (will share the location soon) at 5am and with the first ray of sun we will enter the desert next to the cycle track. And then it will be all fast paced fun in the hot and soft dunes of Qudra - with lots of side slopes, criss-crossing and above all learn something new about our vehicles as well as our own capabilities as off-roaders, as we explore this nice area with possibility to enjoy some wildlife. We will be joined by master of self recoveries and hater of ropes, @JeromeFJ it's going to be a sweaty day at work..😂🥵 so be ready with your shovels. Important note - it's really getting hot and that means desert will behave very diff from what we have experienced over last 6-7 months - it will be soft and it will be hot. So please ensure you are well hydrated, have had good rest and have all your gear ready with you. Plus with rising COVID cases we will be following strict compliance to below 1) Wear a mask during the briefing, inflation, deflation and recovery. 2) Maintain a social distance of a minimum of 2 meters at all times. 3) Do not share any recovery or off-road gears. 4) Do not share any eatables during the drive. Thanks @Kailas - that was another fun evening drive with an unpredicted ending. Lots of excellent cooperation and ingenuity to rescue the cars from the bowl at the end (at least I am assuming they aren't still there), and to reroute the rest of us through a very tricky exit. @Rajiv Sam - I can't believe I didn't give you anything to do. Thank you @Shaaz Sha for your fantastic lead last Sunday. It was an amazing route and a great opportunity to learn and consolidate my skills. Faqa is a really challenging area, at least for me, and requires to be fully focused while you are driving, and that is exactly what I’m aiming for when I go off-roading. So many thanks for offering this route. I hope to see you again soon!! Thank you @Thomas Varghese for sharing your gear with the convoy, and @Sudhanva Sonawane and @Imteeaz for your wise advise during my refusal at the end of the day. I busted my bumper also though was an easy fix for me. Seems like we ticked all the boxes of a madmax drive 😂

The bolt was complete cracked, I was curious maybe because of the first side sloping i was landed quite hard.

@Daniel Yang if cracked means we did a crazy drive. good it happened now and not on Liwa or Sweihan drive

@Thomas Varghese thank you for opening a discussion on this topic. For me, it's not just about the heat either. As offroaders, we do need to be able to traverse all forms of terrain. Anybody who has ever talked to me knows that while I do enjoy being in the the desert riding ridges and climbing bowls, I'm more keen to do long-distance overlanding. To this end, I've been exploring different wadi trails over the past six months when I'm not driving with Carnity. Some of the key challenges that are cropping up on this are the following: 1. Due to extreme littering and the exclave/enclave situation of the UAE & Oman borders, many of the famous wadis that we grew up knowing are all being cordoned off. For example, the famous Jeepers Mountain (Jebel Al Faya) is now entirely closed off. Wadi Sal was closed for some time, but I was able to do the trail over six weeks ago. So there isn't a good repository on which trails are open and which aren't. Most of these drives hence will be purely exploratory in nature so if we don't get any luck, we're not returning disappointed. It's going to take a lot of time to find gems. 2. Driving on rocks is slow and requires a very different mindset. In many cases, because of point #1, we will also be limited only to driving trails which are more designed for the connectivity of villages in this hills. The villagers here (unlike Omanis) don't like large crowds of cars constantly disrupting their paths. Our convoys will therefore need to be a lot shorter. 3. Camping & hiking are the biggest components of the rock-trails in the Northern Emirates. So when organizing these drives, it's important that we consider that we won't always be moving, and that our goal may be to drive to a point, park there, and do some hiking to setup camps (for the day or overnight). This requires a different form of commitment than the 5am ride & go desert format. Last year in November, I spent over ten days exploring the Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams range in Oman. And the culture towards offroading there around trails, riverbeds, rocks and oases is completely and refreshingly different than that in the UAE. The locals there were also incredibly helpful in pointing me to some hidden trails and gems that I just have not gotten when I go up to Fujairah or RAK. All in all, you can certainly count on me to get involved in setting up offroad drives outside the desert. If we can get a few more, perhaps, we can organize some under the "Wadi Campers Club" here on Carnity. If we get enough traction, then it will give more confidence for the Carnity Crew to start looking into how to create more active drives around this.
