Thanks for planning and leading this drive @Emmanuel - what an opportunity to visit a rather unexplored part of the desert. While the sand was extremely unforgiving, I was glad that you navigated an alternative route for us to reach the top of one of the larger dune formations - the view was fantastic!! Again a lot of learning opportunity for me - thanks to @Colin Jordan, @Brette and @Xaf for handling the recoveries (despite the hunger 😀).

The little taste of Little Swehian was my highlight - great, steep but short, side-slopes. Thanks for selecting a few entry-level ridges and criss-crosses @Ale Vallecchi for us to practice - the more I do these, the less panicky it seems The leisurely drive through the sabkha in the semi-dark was the cherry on top! Well-done to the unstoppable marshalls @Frederic and @Wrangeld who swept the convoy excellently, while seamlessly rerouting when needed. I will be sad to miss Little Swehian next week @Ale Vallecchi!

All, I have 4 pieces of wood that can be used for base of jack. Let me know if anybody wants one, and I can bring along.

I need a tool that can automatically select “totally agree” to every post on this forum. Every drive I select this - just to be reminded I have left something out somewhere

Hi @Emmanuel
Will we be exiting near a gas station to fill up our tires? as i need to wait for payday to get a new compressor.
Thanks.
Are you still paid in Rands @Colin Jordan If I make it, I can lend you a 1-cylinder compressor (I bought a bigger one). You can smoke 1.5 filter cigarettes per tyre.

Extremely enjoyable drive! Thanks @Wrangeld for planning and leading - and rerouting when the churned-up soft sand impeded our progress. Thanks to you and @Srikumar for allowing me to learn new skills. For sure next time we can spend more time at Big Red, but this drive was exactly what I needed for a Friday evening.

Hi @Wrangeld I have added my name again - still doubtful subject to some work commitments, but I will withdraw before 6 on Thursday if it does not work out. Magnificent 7 was far better movie than Hateful 8!

Yip, same for my Prado - had to manually flip between 3rd and 2nd gear, or lose all momentum in sideys. With Xterra I also prefer to drive manually, rather than D, as down-shifting is just too slow (and will require full throttle).

Criss Crossing
Don't try this without experience it requires lot of practice.
Nearly shat myself just watching this video!! We had quite a few intermediate (I think!) ridge-riding and criss-crossing last weekend with @Ale Vallecchi and @Srikumar . While I managed them all (one at the 2nd attempt), I must confess I did not feel confident with any of them. My instinct was to de-accelerate once I crossed and then steer down quite aggressively - so definitively not as per the illustration of @Frederic above. I was actually contemplating afterwards how I could improve my technique - as "learning on the fly" (the Carnity way?) seems to push the safety margins a bit. Any chance for a bit more instruction on a future trip - maybe step-by-step show with running commentary? Or maybe I need to book one of the advertised one-on-one courses with @Gaurav (with a few extra sets of clean underpants and air-freshner)?

Trust me: if there is a pocket of powder-soft sand, I will find it!

Recovering on Side Slope

Agree - for scenario 2 and 3 gravity will be your recovery assistant, but aim is to go down straight. Scenario 1: I guess preference will be forward, with some digging to allow you to use gravity. Using a rope I think will be tricky, giving the sudden movement? Just my 5c.
