2010 Nissan GT-R review

Everyone that knows anything about performance cars will have heard of the Nissan GT-R.

It caused a huge amount of excitement in the months leading up to its release in Japan at the tail end of 2007. It arrived in the Middle East a year later 2008 and proved a hit thanks to its futuristic, aggressive looks and blistering performance, designed to take on the Porsche 911 Turbo.

The GT-R is a coupe with four seats, although the back is best left to the limb-less or small children. Practicality is not the GT-R’s strong point, although it does possess a decent-sized boot and Nissan says it can quite easily be driven as an everyday car.

The GT-R is powered by a twin turbocharged 3.8-litre V6 engine that produces around 485bhp. However, as each engine is hand-built, the exact figure can vary from model to model. Gears are changed by a six-speed, dual-clutch transmission via paddle shifters behind the steering wheel.

Technology plays a big part in the GT-R. It houses a complex four-wheel drive system and allows the suspension, transmission and advanced electronic stability control to be adjusted in the cabin and set up for any combination of comfort and performance. The in-car display – which shows information about the car’s engine, speed, fuel economy and even how much G-force is being pulled through corners – was designed by the same people that made the Gran Turismo racing game for the Playstation. The 11-speaker stereo was designed by renowned audio company Bose.

A lighter, even more hardcore version of the GT-R was announced in 2009. The GT-R SpecV uses the same engine but is 60kg lighter than the standard car and has reworked suspension, improved brakes and comes only in black. It’s only available on order, with prices on application from Nissan dealers.
