Dear @Per A this is a rear skid plate. You cannot buy this off the shelf, there are many fabricators in Sharjah Industrial area who can do this for you in about AED 200/- with fitting. Let me know once you have bought your Pajero so that I can point you out in the right direction.

I agree with @Srikumar and @Gaurav Small saloon under 10K with 2-3K for immediate change of battery, all oils, filters, tires, bushes, hose and whatever required to keep it running smoothly and trouble free for the next couple of years, As the resale market for cars is a bit low, try to wait and drive a bargain home so that it does not hurt you when you try to sell it after a couple of years. Much better than paying 1200 - 1500 every month.

Maybe i was a little impulsive but papers signed..... Checked and it was a little late for service but it is being serviced at Al Habtoor before i get it. I was pristine underneath so no off-road or hard driving at all, no accidents only some small dings on the fenders and got a good price for a close to full option car so couldn't say no.....

I completely agree with Sri on this that rent a car is good for a short stay or when you are not sure how long you will be in the country. I have 2 friends who are using rent a car for 24 months, just because they are consultants and there need might be over anytime and they have to pack up within a week or two notice. Buying a used Japanese is highly advisable and reliable as a daily driver and also such dinkies don't lose on resale value so you can literally swap them every 2 years with an upgraded version for more peace of mind.

Agree with @Rahimdad on this one. If you're planning to sell the car in 2-3 years, then you should look at a car with the best resale value or you will lose too much money. But then we are talking Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Nissan. With regards to Korean cars such as Hyundai and Kia, have friends who drive Korean cars and they are very satisfied: * One friend drove an old Kia Opirus in KSA. He literally drove it into the ground. It has 680,000kms and was still going strong, apart from the regular maintenance. * Another friend drove a Hyundai Veracruz 3.6. Was a great, fully equipped SUV, and last time i checked on him he was way above 280kms and without any big issues. This all depends of course on the maintenance and care you take of your vehicle, and a bit of luck. If you buy new, the Korean always have great extras and good warranty schemes. * The very cheap Koreans such as Accent and Rio are nippy and reliable but i heard they suffer a bit from under-powered AC units. In some cases such as yours when racking up high mileage in short time, leasing a budget model might come in handy. You don't have to worry about a thing, and pay a fixed amount that includes maintenance, insurance, etc.. After 2-3 years you give them back the keys and choose another model. No questions asked, no discussions about resale value, and so on. 100% hassle free. But i advise to steer away from leasing above 2500dhs per month. In that price region you might be better off buying something and paying off the loan.

For me it has to be, People arguing about price. Sure, there’s a bit of discount for regular customers but if you want a good job done it costs money. It’s not just my time, it’s the cost of tools, lifts etc. These things don’t pay for themselves. It’s a business. Calling every 30 minutes to see if your car is ready. I can’t finish your car if I’m spending 3 hours a day answering the phone. I’ll call you when it’s done. Giving a diagnosis from another mechanic. I used to waste so much time chasing up stuff that the customer said another mechanic said was wrong. Sometimes it’s better just to listen to the symptoms and do your own leg work. Getting mad over breakages. Sometimes you have to remove a good part to get access to the faulty part and the good part will break. Sure some mechanics are cack handed but nobody ever thinks the parts on their car are old and brittle and will break if you touch them. It’s not always the mechanics fault. Asking to borrow tools. No. That torque wrench cost 750 dhs and just had a 6 month calibration at 300 dhs. Telling me you diagnosed your fault on google. Ok. I’m still going to plug it in and do my own proper diagnosis. If you insist on paying 2 sets of labour, ok. The customer is always right? Staring over my shoulder when I’m working. I really hate this one. If you ask me how to do something I’ll show you. If you’re staring over my shoulder, it makes me feel like you think I don’t know what I’m doing. Like you know any better? Don’t get butthurt because I’m bashing something with a hammer. I’m hitting it with a hammer because it needs to be hit with a hammer. If your car overheated and you kept on driving, just tell me. Don’t hide it. Knowing exactly what happened makes my job a lot easier and saves you money. Same with every fault, just be honest. It’s not for me, it’s for you. If I tell you what the fault is with your car, that’s the fault so believe it. I have better things to do with my time than guess and rebuild an engine 3 times. It’s not a game. If I diagnose your car, I should be the one to repair it. I see too many parts fitters here. Customer gets the fault diagosed with a reputable mechanic then goes to a hack to get parts swapped. Last one. Clean your car before you come in or at least take the trash out of it. Crawling upside down under a dashboard and rubbing my head on a carpet covered in cigarette ash and dog poop from your shoes isn’t a nice experience.

RIP John Haynes. I still remember getting the Haynes Manual for my ‘89 Range Rover that i wanted to get back to pristine condition. Good days and that manual really was useful.

Waauw indeed congrats @Gaurav what a milestone ! I’ve only became a member a year ago but have seen lots of new member activity, and the amount of interesting posts growing every day. Carnity is on its way to serious growth and the contributions of Gaurav have been a big reason for that.

Initial diagnosis was engine oil leakage from between the engine and transmission....if I had included the Piston set who knows he would have showed up next year then....

I am currently thinking about going for a budget lease instead of racking up too many miles on my 1999 Pajero. I do about 110kms every day and taking into account the fact that a 20 year old truck slurps up petrol at a rate of 14-15 l/100km, there are some savings to be made when going for a cheap budget lease. Going for a smaller 1.5 liter engine would basically half my consumption to +/-300 dhs per month, while you can get a lease for about 1200-1300 dhs per month that includes maintenance and insurance. At the same time my Pajero can be kept for offroading and camping trips and gracefully go on for another couple of years as weekend warrior. Instead of going for a lease, i could buy a 10,000dhs semi reliable budget car but that scares me a bit because again it will come with its own costs like maintenance and insurance and possibly breakdowns along the E611 Would a basic Civic or Corolla of max purchase price of 10k really cost less than 1200dhs per month in cost of ownership on a yearly basis ? If you’re just driving from Abu Dhabi to Dubai and back do you really need a SUV? An old Mercedes E class would be a much nicer place to sit. I’m still watching Chinese cars with interest. In the 70s and 80s everyone laughed at Japanese cars. In the 90s and 2000s everyone laughed at Korean cars. Look where they are now. Give it another 5-10 years and having a Chinese car will make you a sc3n3 king.

Nice area for a Fewbie level drive. All the fewbies do join this drive and have the taste in Asif bhai's home turf @ 'Sweihan'. Excellent area for nice rolling dunes with an equally exceptional Lead Driver.

So I have never used the recovery dampers but it seems they do the job (if done properly). Have you used them before? what are your thoughts? Keep it safe my fellow off-roaders!

I always carry two small snatch straps and use them occasionally on tricky or stubborn stucks where chances are high for breaking any tow points or ropes. I also carry the big cloth bag, that I fill with sand and hook up with these straps to absorb the shock. These days use of soft shackles has reduce the risk of damage to greater extent unless the tow points are weak.

It's good if you are using hard shackles. We generally use soft shackles which eliminates the risk of any damage

@Per A the main issue while offroading is with the rear bumper which kinda works like a shovel. You can always attach a bar at the back or if you intend to maintain the original look this is a design I got from @Rahimdad. Pics are below but not necessarily in order. For the front bumper it would be good to remove the front mud guard and might have to trim the bumper a bit. Alternatively, @WiLfY can suggest about getting a two inch lift which would eliminate the need for trimming the bumper and would also give a you a decent ride height.

Rent a car is a stop gap arrangement maybe for a month or two. With low prices in the second hand car market I would suggest that you look at a smaller sedan preferably Japanese which has clocked less than 200,000 KMS. Get it thoroughly checked and keep some extra money (approx 2 - 3k) to do the immediate maintenance and repair work on it for piece of mind. Also out of personal experience stay away from Nissan and their CVTs. I have had two gear box failures in 4 year old Sentras and am having to change the them even before the EMI on the car was completed. An absolute piece of shit.

@timmyjt I have heard that the Chinese cars don't produce as much power and are a bit slow on acceleration. Moreover their mileage is also very poor. To make a wise decision as they loose their resale value really quick. I would recommend to go with tried and tested brands. Don't look for cheap, look for value for money. A lot of dealerships are offering a lot of extras with the vehicle which covers some costs. Furthermore when you get a better resale value you will automatically be the winner.

Hahahaha I feel the same, but be aware that lots of things are “set up” for the show, and is not always fully realistic. But I love Fred his approach to cheap cars and especially their budget fixes and road trips.

There is a service booklet, just make sure it has all the stamps and kilometers are also mentioned along with work carried out. So check the date and kilometers to make sure it was serviced on time.

Anyone using Tapatalk on Carnity ? Several years back when I was on multiple message boards it was a good way of posting messages and getting quick updates. It seems to work for Carnity too, but I find myself using the Carnity website directly on my phone.

I have also tried Carnity on Taptalk and few others too if I remember correctly @Rahimdad @Srikumar and @Asif Hussain Later on, I moved back to the mobile site, as its faster than app who keeps on think for seconds to fetch the live data

You can’t just swap parts on the throttle system. A relearn procedure needs to be completed after any work. Sometimes it’s a manual procedure, sometimes it’s done through the diagnostic tool. I would ask the mechanic if he did this. Any number of things could cause poor gas mileage. It could be spark plugs, coils, dirty air filter, anything really. Best thing to do is do a full engine scan for fault codes and repair as necessary. Check condition and functionality of all mechanical parts not included in the scan. Then you can start looking at live engine data while driving to see if/what the problem is. Another issue, if a TPS has been incorrectly fitted, ie at the wrong angle, it can cause shifting issues. The ECU isn’t getting the correct information so can’t produce the correct output. It thinks you’re on half throttle when you’re on full throttle so shifts gears early. I recommend looking for a good technician who has experience outside of doing oil changes and changing brake pads.

4 door i wanted a big car cause i haven't had that before so i have to live with that is is not as good off road.... but 3.8 and locking rear and all the options i wanted and then some.... Next step is to get the car, fix the front bumper and strengthen the back bumper.

Funny that GAC was called Trumpchi before but they decided to change that name when they entered US markets Do you want to go for the 2WD or the 4WD version ? There is a definite price difference according to Drivearabia website. Considering that you are in the same price region of the base Pajero, or a Korean SUV like Hyundai or Kia, i'd be a bit more inclined to stick with the more well known brands, but that is just me. They won't come with all the bells and whistles of this Chinese SUV. The 2.0 Turbocharged 4 cylinder will be more economical than a 6 cylinder, so that is a good thing to have on your commute. On the other hand, having a 4 cylinder in such a big SUV might mean that the Turbo will have to work hard, and in this climate this might not be the best thing. It's definitely worth a try, and it is a fact that the Chinese are coming up strong. Have you checked the HAVAL H9 ?
