Convoy 2: Thanks to @Brette @Desert Dweller @Luca Palanca Falsini, it was a very enjoyable drive with some awesome dunes! Drive Report Convoy 1 It was one of those mornings, while deflating in the shadow of the mighty Fossil Rock, that I was realizing how beautiful this terrain is and that I keep coming back with a smile in this area. It had been a while and thanks to Brette’s popularity he was able to organize a second convoy and it was a pleasure for me to lead. We started off with approaching some of the play areas that lie West from the pylon track. This meant we had to go against the slipfaces to reach the area but it was also a little test for me to see how to convoy reacted and how we could scale the drive today. To my surprise all acquitted themselves brilliantly and this meant we scaled it up a notch at some times. Apart from a few refusals which were easily dealt with all went super smooth. As we reached the base of Fossil Rock, @TT_Dubai his Wrangler was showing the check engine light and was suffering from a smelly clutch. Unfortunately that meant exiting Tim on the pylon track and saying goodbye. I hope your car gets fixed soon buddy. From the pylon tracks we headed back in and took a nice photo of the convoy at Camel Rock. It was there that we saw Brette’s convoy approaching as well and after waving them goodbye we set off again onwards to new adventures. We made our way to Faya and were able to play in the bowls on the backside of Faya which demand constant momentum and lies close to Fewbie level. Again the whole team did amazing ! Once we reached Faya we took the side route and climbed the mountain. @Senthil Kumar his Wrangler started to overheat so we had to take a break and let it cool down before continuing. We spent the last 25 mins in the smaller bowls next to Faya and made our way to the inflation point. @Alain Canivet-Abikhalil you were a great second lead today ! @Fabiano Morais you drove great as well today and I’m glad you found the tiptronic as your best help when climbing Faya. @ARAGON your yellow Jeep was easy to spot and took on the terrain and challenges effortlessly. Great work! @Senthil Kumar you also did great today. As Richard mentioned, Jeeps have a tendency of overheating a bit and the additional transmission cooler fan will probably be recommended. The American muscle boys @Russ and @Darren Brooke showed us what massive torque combined with excellent driving skills can do. Great to have you guys ! With @Wrangeldin the sweep I knew i could rely on his experience to keep the convoy moving, and sort out the very few minor issues we faced today. Thank you my friend ! TRIP REPORT Now, that's what I call an eventful evening but in a good way. As I was leaving from work in the afternoon, I noticed that my steering pump was leaking badly. A quick dash to my mechanic and an hour later I was all set for the drive. Appreciate the mechanic who was willing to do the work even though he was fasting. I had done my PCR on Wednesday and unfortunately the result had not come out till I needed to leave for AD, causing a bit of confusion at the border as my DPI mentioned that I need a Swab test. So I had to call off the drive with a heavy heart and just a few minutes after informing everyone, I received an SMS that my PCR result that came Negative. With a big relief we informed all the drive particpants that the drive was on but the start would be a bit delayed. I considered this as a positive sign, that this drive was meant to happen and that we are going to have a great evening. It was wonderful to see all the drive partipantants at the meeting point. After a quick deflation and briefing, we headed into the might dunes of Sweihan. It's a fact that in night drives with limited visibility sometimes the size of the dunes, which can be quite daunting in daylight, don't seem so intimidating at night till the time you do the descent. I can safely say that we scaled some of the biggest dunes of Sweihan and criss crossed on some amazing rolling dunes. The reason was the fantastic convoy that we had plus the trust they placed in each other, that if the car in front can do it so can we if we follow the tracks precisely. We did have our fair share of popouts due to the nature of the terrain and pace of the convoy, but nothing that couldnt be easily fixed. Congratulations to the entire team of drivers yesterday, @Hasan Wahlan @Kamal Fayad @Mus_hus78 @Ruan van den Heever @Farouq Owdeh and ofcourse our very capable Sweep @Tbone who was always there to help when needed. I personally had an extremely satisfying feeling of the drive that we pulled off yesterday night as a team. Bravo !! For sure, I will be planning to come down next Thursday as well, when we go discover another side of Sweihan. Till then take care and have a wonderful week ahead.

Thank you @Frederic and @Wrangeld for the wonderful drive today morning. Was my 3rd drive with carnity including the ABN drive.. Had a taste of the Al Faya climb (thru the cheat route, as Fred called it 😜), and managed it in 2 attempts...floored the gas pedal for it and the tacho needle hit uncharted territory 😁😁 today!! On the descent from top of Faya, i got a fishtail experience too, as i was just idling down without giving gas..was a bit scary due to all the readings and videos i saw on fishtailing, but managed to bring the nose back straight with a bit of gas and counter steer. The fossil rock climb was also a learning experience for me about keeping the momentum, got a refusal there when i saw @TT_Dubai (hope you get the issue sorted and join us back soon) sliding off the track and i hesitated for a moment..had to come to the base and try again. All in all..a great and short drive, looking forward and coming back for more!!

My hero. Next time I will leave my daughter at home, buy a better compressor and go easier on the car😁

Hi Convoy 1! Thanks @Fredericand great report. So sorry again to the rest of the convoy for the detour as it is becoming very apparent that having a manual Wrangler comes with it's own set of unique issues. On climbing Fossil Rock I made the error of shifting into 2nd at around 5k rpm whereupon it started to lose momentum fast. Then came the refusal and I tried to get out of it but the clutch was protesting... Anyway, second attempt (and a good runway) gave me good momentum in first gear halfway up Fossil Rock when the car stuttered (almost as if the TC intervened) and the check engine light illuminated. I felt as if I had 50% of power as the car went into limp mode. That's when @Wrangeld thought it best to exit as it would not be possible to carry the bowls and other climbs in a reduced capacity. It was definitely the right call and I would not be able to commit to each challenge. Back on E102 the car was fine and happily cruising at 100kph but I still dont have full torque. Am keeping it under observation over the weekend and will get the ECU reset next week if the check engine light is still illuminated. Always had a love affair with a manual Wrangler but our relationship is in urgent need of marriage counselling.... 😊

A question, is your new rim width the same as the stock one? If the width is more that could be a reason for more frequent pop outs? Generally pop outs are quite rare in BFG due to their thick side walls. I would recommend trying to analyse under what circumstances are you having a popout, crisscrossing aggressively, fighting gravity, sharp turns or hitting bumps more frequently. If you get your tyre cleaned that should be fine. Rebalancing is not needed everytime unless you have lost the weights

DRIVE REPORT Dear Desert Wanderers, This drive may have not reached as far is was planned, but certainly we climbed to the highest points we were meant to reach. We entered the sand by 6:15am and immediately headed towards Area 53. With the sun still low on our left, the pyramid-like dune was a majestic view, as we progressively approached it from the south west side. Here's a view from the top, (no, the number plate is not falling off, it's the fisheye lens effect!): Unfortunately, Area 53 is as beautiful as it is challenging and after just 25 mins in the drive, half way to the top of the dune, @amir amiri had the first pop-out of the day. It wasn't an easy one to fix as the giant tire of the RAM 1500 wouldn't seal properly until @amir amirihad the brilliant idea to keep in place the bottom part of the tire with the aid of a snatch rope. When we started to move again, we managed to climb again not far from the top of Area 53, then set and set our bearing to south west, pointing at Sohail Dune. The sand was very soft and very, very churned up, a sign of how popular Area 53 is, which also means, unfortunately, that it is very very crowded... In fact today we met five different convoys and two of them crossed our paths multiple times. Despite the difficult terrain, the landscape was beautiful and, as we moved away from the most popular routes, we started to find more virgin dunes and I must say it wasn't easy to choose the route, as every ridge and every crest were calling for my tires to leave the first marks of the day. Today's drive was all about momentum. Climbing these great dunes can be exciting and give a great sense of accomplishment, but it can also be very frustrating if the car in front of you struggles and you are forced to slow down, sacrificing your precious momentum.. As the climbing wasn't easy we indeed had several refusals and a few stucks, which took a bit more of our time, but overall the convoy's response was great. @amir amiri, in 2nd lead for almost 2 hours, had certainly a tough experience in his first Intermediate drive. The pace, the speed and the technical complexity, all combined, challenged him a lot, but he came through well. It will be only with practice that his hesitation at this new driving level will fade away and he will develop the sensibility of what his tires can take and what it takes to avoid pop-outs.. @Arman was the star of the day. Today's drive was way more difficult than the last Fewbie one we did toghether on Feb 26th in this area, but he showed a great improvement in his driving skills and managed his car superbly in almost all situations. @Hisham Masaad had to fight his underpowered own car until he figured out he was driving in ECO mode. Since then things got much better, even if - from time to time - the churned up sand gave him some hard time. @Mario Cornejo today finally found enough challenge for his Patrol Y61 to get eventually stuck. This was, I believe, his first stuck ever in Carnity.. In a way, this was a memorable drive! @Goutam was hitching to drive. During recoveries, wherever there was enough space, he would roam around in his yellow Wrangler restlessly, anxious as a father waiting for the delivery of his newborn. I'll take it as a sign he really enjoyed the drive and he couldnt wait to get more of it. @Shehab Alawadhi was having great fun and driving excellently well, as far as I could see, until he was forced to leave the drive ahead of time. @GauravSoni was often in search of his own lines today, as - understandably - with so many cars in front the tracks of the convoy were deep and churned up. As always, this small rerouting some times works out well, some others a bit less, but it was - I am sure - a lot of fun. @Shaaz Sha, now driving a Nissan X-Terra and not anymore a Jeep Wrangler SWB, held swiftly the last Intermediate position in the convoy. His long experience within Carnity today shined. Just half way through our approach to Suhail Dune, @Shehab Alawadhiunfortunately noticed his front right tire was losing pressure, a problem that had apparently surfaced in a previous drive. After a good 20 mins fighting with the crazy bolts on his wheel, we were just ready to replace it with the spare, only to discover that the release mechanism of the spare wouldn't work... It was then unavoidable the decision to escort @Shehab Alawadhi to the nearest exit point on the west side, along the dirt track leading back to Tawi. After greeting our unlucky friend, we took another dive in the dunes, making our way to the top of Suhail Dune, reaching which always gives great satisfaction. At this point @markshad moved in 2nd lead and @Jeepie was our new sweep. We then had a very nice stint, approx 30 mins, riding really nice, almost virgin, ridges as we slowly made our way towards Iftaar Bowl. It was not far from there that @amir amiri had his 2nd pop-out. This time, the lesson learned from the first one allowed to fix it fairly quickly. Unfortunately, by the time we were back in movement, our time was over. We made our way to Iftaar Bowl, where everyone made a single attempt to the top, where only @Goutam made it with me, and then quickly exited on the tarmac by 10:15am on the east side, towards Hatta Rd. Overall we drove for 3h 55', of which only 2h 15' moving and 1h 40' stopped. We covered 41 km, against the approx 70 that had been planned, with an average moving speed of 18.2km/h and a total ascent/descent of 440 / 520 m. We didn't make it to Shuwaib, but it was in any case a nice and challenging drive. I'm sure, even if we didn't have the chance to go along all the crests we were supposed to, the drive was still worth the title, as for most of the time we were at very high points, with nothing than the sky higher than us. Congratulations to everyone for getting through this challenging drive, especially the newly promoted Intermediates. A great thanks to @marksand @Jeepie for their great support.

Thank you Sri, We all and I for one had totally new experiences last night. A first pop out for me too. With the help of T-bone all fixed quickly. The pace was fast and daring and allowed for much experience and faith gained. These drives give us confidence in the vehicle capabilities and our own daring personalities. Thank you very much for all your effort and willingness to lead the drive even after all your difficulties yesterday. Awesome lead!

Amazing drive and it will be safe to say best ever for me. The weather, the drive and all the convoy members were all perfect. As you mentioned we all were a team and tackled these intimidating dunes like they were nothing. Here is the underbody protection, baja lights and wheels. I also added a metal mesh covering the opening between the bash plate and bumper. The Y62 also doesn't have a fire extinguisher holder under the seat so I added one.

Dear Thomas, IM equipment Safety flag, tire deflator, tire pressure gauge, shovel, fire extinguisher, medical kit, radio (walkie-talkie), air compressor, tool kit, rated recovery rope and 2 rated shackles, GPS. Having more senior members on a drive who carry additional equipment or members that have already invested allows drivers not to invest themselves at this level.

Also can everyone with winches remove them before the drive (😬), i think it has become a luxury these last few months, to easy to use. Those that repeatedly get stuck needs to do it the old school way and shovel 🥄, its the best way to learn, and if your health is put at risk due to excessive shoveling then reconsider this drive 😎✌🏼 I like how @Wrangeld has put it above, if you got stuck it’s because of you and not the guy in front of you, you need to manage yourself by keeping a safe following distance, focus and dont get distracted, and follow the leads tracks, if you feel the need to blame the guy in front of you for getting stuck then that means you did not manage that situation like you should by now in the IM level be able to do. have a good weekend all, see you Saturday!

I love your Covid compliant, pre-brief @Wrangeld! To the point and calls a spade, a spade 😀 I wholeheartedly agree with the points you mentioned. I would like to add: - Don’t be late; aim to be moving @ 15:00. This translates into more driving time and more enjoyment - Don’t bring passengers if you think they might get sick or distract you. Exiting passengers is a waste of time and a buzz killer. Newbie/Fewbie drives are more suited for an IM Carnitian to bring company. If the aim is to impress family/friends, take a video of the drive, and boast about your amazing driving skills later - Don’t attend the drive if you suspect your car has any mechanical issues. The IM drives are more demanding and will amplify any issues with the car - Don’t fight gravity and watch your speed; IM is not a license to go crazy, and IM certainly does not mean you can’t roll over 😬 Finally, let’s have loads of fun! OK - Wednesday morning and you're all making weekend plans. Here's my pre-briefing for the drive on Saturday: No dropouts please, because your Friday drive overran or you're tired or the dog ate your homework. If you don't know your weekend plan by now, unless thermonuclear war breaks out, your vehicle got damaged on Friday or there's a real family emergency, any other excuse will be called for what it is. IM drive instructions are pretty simple. If you have a problem, call it out. If you can self recover, take the time needed and do it. If you need help, ask. It's not a race so we are not looking for the fastest recoveries so we can move on. There is a hierarchy in sorting out problems. Drive, dig, rope, winch, helicopter. At IM, you get yourself into trouble, you get yourself out. No excuses, no blame. If you got stuck you got stuck. It's not because the guy/girl in front braked suddenly = you were too close or not in control of your speed. It's not because you did not see the correct line = you're IM so if you don't see the line, make the adjustments needed. Focus on you. Short, implies this will be a technical challenge. It will help your drive skills immensely. Sharp, implies criss cross, ridges and side slipping. Let's see which gives more pleasure. See you Saturday in the Sand.

@Wrangeld I am gutted, but I am stuck in Pemba up in the North of Mozambique. Was meant to be on flight back to arrive tonight into Dubai, but with the joys of African logistics and way of life, it is not possible and I am stuck her for another two days. Such a shame, as this sounds right up my street. Have a great drive!!
