Time to clear the air. I was super impressed to see that every one here got the correct point and said this roll cage isn't safe without the thick padding. Any roll cage is NOT AT ALL safe without the thick padding, as it will split open the skull. Unless driver is wearing a helmet all the time. I was shocked to see this "Show Car" from one of the top off-road garages with two spare tires strapped in cargo bed for apocalypses days BUT with number plate. God knows whether it was work in progress or finished job, as I have seen this parked in another top shop recently. Well done @Lawrence_Chehimi to point out first. @Niki and @Hisham Masaad good observation to point roll cage on dashboard, but it could be possible that it has support from underneath which we don't see it from outside. If its not supported then it's meaningless and will crush dashboard and windscreen and cause extensive damage than offering any level of protection. @Rawad and @JamesThorn excellent observation for A, B and C pillar support. I too worked for 12 years with Oil and Gas upstream company and know how strict HSE boys are for these safety issues. @Chaitanya D As per RTA, anyone can get permission to install roll cage but with properly padded version and not just plain metal bars like above. Very similar to safari companies roll-cage but for personal or commercial use and still be street legal. @topgear you are right for safari and similar use passenger and driver head is protected. These types are usually used in racing applications as part of stage 1 safety modifications to be used with helmet at all times but without number plate. @Arman true such tubular rock crawling roll cages aren't street legal here in UAE and even in most other countries and these boys load these toys on trailer for playtime.

Dear Desertnauts A few last minute info about tomorrow afternoon's drive. Meeting time will be 4:00 PM, but I hope we can manage to all arrive a few minutes before, so we can leave as soon as possible. The day will grow cooler soon, so we should not worry too much about the heat of the mid-afternoon. The goal is to cross the tall Murqab's dunes in a north-westerly direction, aiming toward Lisaili, and before reaching it, to cross a couple of sabkhas, with long, low dunes, from where we will actually enter the Lisaili Plateau, in the direction of Solar Park. The added element of complexity of this drive will be the crossing of a relatively technical area, between Murqab and Lisaili, which we usually avoided by crossing it on the so called "Highway to Solar Park" sand track. Not this time. As always on a new route, patience will be required. Other than this, we are looking to drive as far as we can, sunlight permitting. If you go with insurance companies such as RSA, AXA and Oman to name a few they don't mention such clause of 500m or 2 km from the road as the coverage area for your vehicle. The only clause they mention that your vehicle should not be involved in any kind of racing, competition, desert safari activities, which does not happen in Carnity.

Dear Desertanuts, let's get ready for the closing of this weekend of drives. As already posted, this will be another episode of the Long Range Patrols (also known as the Long Range Desert Group). We'll move from Murqab to Qudra, skirting, but not breaching, the Carnity no-go zone, driving through Lisaili's eastern border (on a new track crossing the previously avoided technical dunes), and from Solar Park, hopefully, to Bab al Shams. The sunset will decide how far we reach. 1. Mark the location 2. Take lots of pictures from various angles 3. If the car is in a condition to be driven drive it out on to the road. If on a flat area with a clear route to exit it can be towed as well 4. Call the cops after reaching the road. I have rarely seen or heard someone getting injured due to a rollover on the sand. But in the event if there is a serious injury you will most definitely have to call the cops while in the desert, who would then guide on the next steps

Dear Desertnauts. Here's the latest update about tomorrow's drive. First of all, the meeting point is a bit tricky to find, when following Google Maps. I'll try to explain better. From Qudra's Last Exit, please take the road to Bab al Shams Resort (first right at the Qudra roundabout, coming from Dubai). Upon reaching the first roundabout, take the second exit, to reach this point: https://maps.app.goo.gl/oeXzNh6zySDJZ7Hf9 Once passed the bike track, please reach the meeting point by taking a right dirt track through the sabkha, as posted below, until you reach a construction camp, where I and/or one of the other Seniors will be parked. Once at the meeting point, start deflating to between 13 and 11 PSI, depending on your tires. We will be tuning in on Carnity radio channel #3 (446.031). We'll leave as soon as deflation is complete, in an easterly directions, to cross a short patch of technical dunes, with the goal of reaching the long-range dunes of Qudra north, and side-slope back and forth through this area. Having done this, we'll move back west, through more technical terrain, looking out for gazelles and groups of trees, until we'll reach, once again, a set of long range, tall dunes, where we'll finally find numerous rock formations, and natural pools. RSA passed my Offroad claim without any hitch. They only required the police report; service was prompt and fast

I have insurance from RSA and it costed me around 1500 for my 2013 model and it covers the iff roading aswell

My drives journey has hit a milestone. I have scored half century this past Friday. While my drive count shows 51 on the forum - I was absent on one afternoon drive, which was my 2nd drive of the day. These are a snapshots of my drives till date. Looking forward to many many more. Any and all criticisms are welcome.

I like this topic. My question for you will be "what kind of off-roading are you planning to do?". If you will limit to our weekends on the dessert in UAE, don't bother lifting your jeep. It is not required for what we do here. The Wrangler is already the most capable Offroad vehicle as it comes from the factory. If you already have 1" lift, my advice is DON'T TOUCH IT and enjoy it as it is. Sand off-roading don't require that much of a clearance. It is more about engine power, light vehicle and driver's wrists and feet. It is true that bigger jeeps look better, but for sand is actually better not to be too big for many reasons: weight, gravity center, gas autonomy, power compromise, etc. But if you want to do rocks and mud on the wadis, then that is another story. If that is your thing let me know. I am looking for a partner to do that, hahahaha.

I have the same cover for my Jeep and I have been with AXA for more than 15 years now (not for off road), never had an issue to in honouring the claims generally.

Directly with AXA is still cheaper than Beema, if you have no claim for few years. Beema, never recognized or pass on the no claim discount in my quote, which was close to 20% difference. Not once, but twice, one time for third party and other was comprehensive quote.

And plus their premium is 2-5% extra than the cheapest, crapiest, million asterisk insurance provider. AXA, RSA and Oman all are good, just compare quotes and go ahead with any.

Qudra "Not So Easy" - Drive Report "Nothing tyrannizes the real Sufi's heart. What strikes the oyster shell not damage the pearl" - Rumi It was supposed NOT to be an easy drive, and easy it was NOT! The original plan to cover the same tracks driven on Absolute Newbie drives, at a faster and more challenging pace, worked well, until our "Sufis' hearts" were shaken by a roll-over. When that happened, we had been driving already for almost 2 and a half hours, with almost 1 hour to spare on the time it usually takes to complete the AN drive. Our pace had been brisk, averaging a little less then 28 Km/h, covering a distance of over 55Km. The trail had taken us from the Bab al Shams' entry through the low, long range dunes, heading north toward the date plantation and the big "farm" close to Qudra's Last Exit, then east and south across the tall linear dunes, and a technical area (with a "botanical" detour to inspect a copse of Ghaf trees visible on the horizon), and finally, through the area of tall dunes, with bushy slopes and mud-rock formations on their slip-face side, across the bike track, in the very diverse terrain reaching toward the Solar Parks' pylons. This is where a moment of distraction cost @luis mantecon dearly. Luckily, there were no damages to Luis, who recovered promptly from being shaken, and assisted valiantly in his Wrangler's recovery. The incident occurred on a relatively low dune to cross (don't they all happen in apparently easy terrain?), where, nonetheless, the previous drivers had left some heavy marks, hence making Luis use a bit too much speed in climbing the side slope (to overcome the rugged trail). Evidently, the line of approach to the ridge was a bit too low (probably due to the Wrangler being caught in some of the deep tracks), and the attempt to reach the ridge by counter-steering, led to the car turning progressively perpendicular to the crest, digging an even deeper trench on its left side while accelerating sideways, and eventually caused the 360 degrees roll of the Wrangler across the churned ridge. The car stopped its progress resting on the passenger's side, just across the crest itself, on the dune's low slip-face. Takeaway lessons here? Speed is often the enemy (controlling momentum being our ally), especially when combined with a less then optimal approach to the ridge (even though often forced by the conditions of the slope itself), and the instinctive reaction to steer up, to reach the ridge, even when we "know" that the car is too far from the crest itself. I am sure that this moment will be etched in all the drivers' mind, and will be an important lesson learned by all, to always choose the safest option. Fortunately, we can delve into this analysis, because Luis is 100% healthy, with car and driver having exited successfully after the accident. As required in these cases, the recovery was a team effort, with useful suggestions being given by many, a display of overall calm attitude by all, and great cooperation with the various phases of flipping the car on its 4 wheels, stripping it of all its damaged parts that would interfere with reaching the exit, and repairing the pop-out caused by the tilting of the car back on all fours. BTW, if someone has the video (even images of the roll) please share them in the gallery, so that may be a good source of discussion in terms of how to manage such extreme situations. With the images in mind of a very busy morning, my great thanks go to the entire convoy: @Hisham Masaad for his overtime at Center Forward (yes, the drive itself went smoothly, but we still had to deal with a few refusals and stucks) as well as at the winch and the jack, during the recovery; @Chinthaka Ruwan at Second Lead, who responded punctually to all my calls; @Chris Wing, as the more senior Fewbie driver, who swept the group with ease; to each and everyone in the convoy - @Alfred Alinazar (very impressive Fewbie baptism of fire), @Paolo Pellegrini (always getting better with your skills), @TT_Dubai and @Tareck (managing your two giant vehicles with constant improvement), @Ben84, @Sunil Mathew and @JeromeFJ (always in control) - who all drive impeccably, and pitched in enthusiastically with the recovery. A special thought goes to @luis mantecon, with the best wishes to have his car back soon, and to be able to get back in the saddle, across the desert, in no time. The usual stats for the drive (even though influenced by the incident) tell us that we drove for 3:23 hours, of which 2:36 moving, covering 60.8 Km (the last 3 on the exit track), at an average speed of 23 Km/h while moving (18 Km/h overall).
