Am still recollecting how amazingly every on drove - But the star of the drive was @Andrew John Melvill who was on his first drive and was able to keep up with the pace and challenge equally with others who had few drives under their belt at this level and second to be highlighted if I had to highlight would be @Faraz94 with his Haval ! Impressive handling of your machine buddy ! . We managed to do 50% of what I had planned and soon, we will resume where we finished the drive ! Thanks @Luke K P for the Tea again, and you were a perfect SL for the occasion, keeping right distance and rerouting where needed. and @Looper Thanks for strongly anchoring the centre forward of the convoy, and managing those few refusals. and @Zulfikhar Naiyar for sweeping us and with communications all times Am sure you all had a great time, and looking forward to another one soon ! ( Again - Thank you more importantly for being on time - That helped us make the most of our drive and am sure you all noticed it was getting hot by 9am, slightly overshot our exit time by 30 mins: ) @azad - Hope your issue of check engine was sorted and you are all set for next drive ! @Gautam Banka - We missed you - but am glad you managed to pass on your experience to NBs ! I was late by 4 mins and saw the convoy was already aligned for moving, so I accepted @Looper 's advice of supporting the Newbie drive, which actually worked as one of the cars broke @Batuhan Kulac down in between, and I had to pull it with my beast to the tarmac road back. The newbie drivers had a good learning that how does it works to pull a car from middle of desert to a tarmac road. Look forward to drive soon with you guys. Cheers.

In other news, it was a fantastic lead by @DP1011 and I was quite happy in the middle of the convoy for a change. @Luke K P as second lead was fantastic and made the drive challenging for all the guys at the back. I can tell you that the #6 or #7 car onwards the track was fully churned up and it was quite a challenge to drive there with frequent refusals, but I suppose it was also a great learning experience for both drives and for me while managing the refusals. Whenever we stopped for sidees or bowls it was great fun and had enjoyed a lot on the drive. @Frans M and the sweep for the first part of the convoy, @Faraz94 and the second lead behind me and @Zulfikhar Naiyar as the overall sweep did a great job.

Everything that happens - happens for a purpose - some say Karma is a B*&^%h. The meeting time was 5:30 for drive off time set to 5:45 and we were already late after the briefing done and FB+ convoy was in their cars and were about to move out. I was quite sad at that time that we had to turn you back; but glad that there was another convoy to join. However please do understand that even 5 more min is 5x14=70 collective minutes lost. Having said that we were even more glad that you joining the newbie drive helped @Batuhan Kulac and the entire convoy. and you were: Meanwhile I remember once tugging you out after you had a bad pop-out. It was your payback for that tug. just fyi - @Batuhan Kulac had even worse experience been late once before. By the time he reached the meeting point few weeks ago; not only the convoy had left; but there was no alternative drive to join as well. It's always heartbreaking to see someone drive 100+kms only to drive back.

Removing the winch is a good idea and also after that you can look at removing this extra heavy bumper. If it is same as your profile pic, it's an Australian-style metal bumper for avoiding Kangaroo hits, as they mostly drive on flat sand. For dunes, you need the best power-to-weight ratio, being JK (slightly underpowered than JL), cutting the weight should be your top priority.

Hi Chris I would go for lightness as far as possible for desert driving, as power to weight is very important. My car is an almost stock pajero only have rear bash plate, cut front bumper and AT tires in the stock size. Learning to self-recover your car from a refusal/stuck is really satisfying, almost as much as making your 1st long climb on the 1st attempt.

Thanks, @Luke K P - that's a helpful perspective. The Jeep has fairly good clearance as is, however having something that won't easily be damaged (i.e. a lighter/smaller metal bumper) will give peace of mind. I'm thinking the winch might be worth shelving for a while. Might take a look at taking mine off for now as a partial weight-saving step. Can always put it back on later.

wow thats a solid bumper! When I put a steel bumper on my pajero (mostly for clearance after i damaged the plastic one.. i had it made of thinner steel and came to around 20kg. I didnt notice it making much of a difference other than clearance + the few times it hit a dune there was no discernable marking/ damage.. 20kg vs ~80kg is a pretty big difference tho. while i dont have a winch ive been dragged out of stucks a few times by those who have them. My view is that they are a great connivence to save time in the extreme heat on someone elses recovery instead of doing it the 'slow way' with kinetic ropes for those very very stuck situations.. but sometimes recovery is the fun part of the day and problem solving with the ropes is enjoyable. TLDR; thats a super heavy front combo imho, dont think a winch is *really* needed if you driving in a big group with experienced leaders.

Notwithstanding Carnity’s very welcome approach of stock cars being entirely suitable in the early stages - I wanted to start a discussion on the merits of having a winch and aftermarket bumper. I’ve been conscious of power vs weight with my Jeep (the 3.8L engine is not blessed with much other than a thirst for oil), and having gone back to check the data sheets - I’ve discovered that my winch weighs 60lb and my steel bumper comes in at a whopping 140lb. That’s basically an adult sat ahead of the front axles…not great for balance or overall mass. On the upside however I have a bumper that is pretty rugged, unlikely to get damaged any time soon, has some solid tow points, and a winch that could scale the side of a mountain single-handedly. So…I’m curious to hear views on at what stage a winch is genuinely useful to have, the merits of stock vs near stock vs fully rugged bumpers, - and given the choice between lightness or resilience, which way our resident desert rats would run…

Dear desert wanders, @Frederic118, @nithish468, @Sandeep Nayar and @Gary F, Firstly thanks for all being on time Yesterday allowing us to get away bang on time after the briefing. We had a good mix of Al Fayah Technicals and mid to long range dunes coupled with Daylight, Twilight and Dark to finish out with. You guys all drove amazingly well taking into account that the sand was drying out and starting to turn into powdery patches in places that we have come to expect, embrace and respect in Fayah. So well done to you all for coping with every aspect of the drive. Thanks @Sandeep Nayar for a great S/L you did amazingly well keeping the right amount of distance and reacting to my instructions quickly and accurately. Sure. Drove it a bit yday. Changed the bulbs to Philips Rallye 50/50 LED H4 which was lying in my inventory Results are ok for reflector type HL. I hope to keep this one for little longer than usual.

Miraculously fun drive with you @Ale Vallecchi as always. Everyone started in the beginning to adjust to the soft sands of badayer and gaining confidence by all of us. We went as planned through the higher dunes and some really fun bowls midway celebrating @Stumpy birthday up there. With just a handful of refusals and a couple of stucks. closing it out with the technical shorter and closer dunes that led us along the fence to faqaa and amongst some nice camel farms at sunset.
