Already a lot has been covered by some expert. My opionin is that out of the two go with the 2006 TJ, as the power to weight ratio is better than the 2008 JK (3.8 engine). Having said that I have heard that post 2004 the TJ's changed from 4 speed to 5 speed automatic, which kinda ruined the 1st gear's ratio. This makes a difference when doing some long hill climbs or massive sideys. Also, a good condition pre 2004 TJ is almost at the same level, if not the same, as a stock 3.6 pentastar JK purely because the TJ is a much lighter car than the new JKs.

For a Wrangler best engine is 3.6 than 4.0 than the last is 3.8. So engine wise i would blindly go for a TJ. But if you going to use this car as daily also, you may prefer JK which is much comfortable than a TJ. But if it is going to be only weekend fun car 4.0 TJ will give you a smile. If you can afford 2012 above model which comes with a 3.6 than i will say go for it.

I declare - I am a TJ owner so take your conclusions knowing that. I am presuming both are stock. My vote TJ. It's a 4 litre and does not suffer anywhere as near as many of the problems that were asscoaited with the JK. Purely from the reliability point of view, the 4L was a better tested engine (used in the Cherokee as well) that has all the power you can want. You might get some additional creature comforts in the JK - but really, why are you buying a Jeep? If you want reliability in just about any situation my vote is the TJ. Now ... just wait for all the people to tell you never go for a Jeep, never mind which model.

Hi @Zed depending on the age of your jeep and the amount you spend on mods, the more interesting your ride will be. We started with a stock jeep - which frankly is still within the limit of what I can do as a driver at the moment. In fact, I am quite sure that actually the Jeep still has a lot more to give until my driving catches up and I think about making changes. In the end, however, this is a weekend warrior vehicle. In some respects, I am with @sertac If this Jeep is damaged (and the passengers) are fine, so be it. I will mourn, but it's not going to impact my life beyond having to buy another weekend warrior. In the end, it's about why you are out in the desert. For some people, comfort is an important factor even in throwing the car around in the sand, but if you are cleaning out hte sand on Friday afternoon because you don't want it in the car, it's likely that it's not the car for driving: For sure, if you aspire to the 'heroics' in the videos you shared, your risk of damage increases exponentially and I would not want to have to worry about scratching the car instead of whether I am navigating the sand.

Seems like a nice Jeep but 30.000 is a lot of money for that if you ask me. Now we are end of the season, you should be able to get much better price for a TJ. I can say a TJ should be around 15.000-22.000AED price range. If it is in immaculate condition than you can consider giving 25.000AED. Of course this is just my idea.

2008 JK will have the 3.8 Engine with 200 Hp, which is not bad, but not be mistaken with the Pentastar 3.6 with 280 Hp that came out a few years later. From what i've read, the 3.8 was a bit of an inbetween engine, as they came from the legendary 4.0 inline six from the TJ, and later developed the Pentastar with superior power. We used to have Aamir in our club that drove a 2011 JK with this engine, with manual gearbox. Was a very nice 4x4. Probably the 3.8 JK will go cheaper than the Pentastar models.

Correct. I also assumed that due to the tow bar the risk for damaging the rear bumper was low, but at some point it still popped out. I have put a stainless steel plate on both sides that’s bolted onto the tow bar and the bumper. It basically avoid the sand from entering so the « scooping » cannot occur.

I was researching the effects of the use of dual rectified flip flop diodes in low voltage transistors when used in conjunction with high ballast resistors in a silicon based aspectimosified charging circuit. Just kidding. I just like to read new random things. Reading automotive textbooks all day every day gets boring after a while. Its good to keep the brain stimulated.

I was tempted to say go for that one. On a serious note can you please share more details. Whether they are stock or have any mods on them, are they automatic or manual and how many kilometres on them. Have you test driven either one, what si the asking price for these. Most importantly which colour they are. We all know that depending on the colour of the vehicle you can get extra power locked in.

I'm sorry @Zed with such a looooooooong travel suspension even Toyota Corolla can do this. There is nothing to do with Jeep, Patrol, LC band wagon dance here. They are often used as a shell. Period. Last week we spotted wrangler climbing insane behind fossil rock and when same climb @Colin Jordan tried he could make 20-25% hardly. Because previous wrangler must be running LS engine (corvette) with twin turbos to defy gravity and physics so effortlessly. And he must have spend twice the cost of the shell wrangler to build such extreme modified climber. What you is NOT what you get here (WYSIWYG).

@RohanH that tow bar would help a bit, but it doesn't eliminate the entire problem as there is a gap where the sand can enter the aluminium lip and the aluminum part is still held only with 4 screws. I would recommend a proper plate that covers and supports the aluminum lip

An off road toy is if it's explodes tomorrow and burns down to it's chassis, you can still walk away from it without a very big hole in your wallet. But if you can afford to bash around in a 200k car without much of us poor folk type of concerns like expensive repairs, depreciation, screwing up your only pride and joy then go for it by all means.. For the OG poster off you can afford it and love the Patrol leave this one for the family and buy yourself another dedicated used patrol just for off road fun. Since this generation has been around for 12 years now I've seen early ones go for 50-60k also. Although personally I would go for the earlier generation as they are not so much of a plastic pig and almost desert ready out of the box and cheaper too. But then again not as roomy or comfy as the current gen Well that just disqualifies you right there and then! 😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄

@RohanH, It’s a risk... I know that @Frederic also even though having a tow hook added something here as the bumper on steep descending still scoops and can break... Is breaking the bumper risk worth the 450 aed... in my case it was....

@Srikumar it was a 5 speed manual till 2004, they changed it to 6 speed manual from 2005 onwards, but that is only for manual, if auto than its probably the same. Plus 1999 - 2004 they came with Dana 44 axles which were amazing and bullet proof as is the 4.0 engine. But i have driven a a stock 3.8 Unlimited fully loaded Jeep Wrangler up Iftar Bowl. Later on i noticed that it had already done 200k kilometres, so I really like the 3.8 litre version also.

I'm sorry @Lorenzo Candelpergher we can't do that for your and your vehicle safety primarily. Whenever you join the next newbie drive, do make sure to inform the trip lead about your 11 drive self declaration, so that he can gauge your driving skills and promote you to the fewbie level after that drive.

There are more even cheaper and stock , in good conditions. But the problem is they are not coming down on price. I would say a stock TJ in good condition should cost you a max 20k. Nothing more.

I only remember of a Ferrari kit that came out for the Toyota MR2, and one that was made for the Fiero (which was a disaster).

Jeep's are jeep and there is no second doubt that they will eventually break and have their own set of reliability issues whichever year you go to. With my little knowledge of Jeep, as i'm not a jeeper JK make more sense because of immense power gain and marginal better approach and departure angle plus newer engineering is always efficient. These all three are super important aspect for offroading. TJ - 190 hp vs JK - 285 hp. Btw, just to be clear what type offroading you are into or planning to get into? Sand (desert driving) Rocks (mountain climbing or rock crawling) Both of the above Just tarmac

@Zed I would be worried looking at that. Why would you like to drive into a wall after buying a brand new Jeep. The only thing I feel comfortable with is the dummy who drove the Jeep into the wall was safe and the cabin did not deform, the airbags went off at the right time which means the dummy only lost some paint on the airbag.

As a TJ owner I can tell you it's not comfortable like a patrol or xterra but it is capable in the sand and I NEVER worry about it getting a bit beaten about. Prerfable that it is not, but not the end of the world if something breaks. As you move from newbie to Fewbie you cannot be worried about what ,might happen to your precious metal. If you climb the ladder further, it's not going to be easier on your car. You need to be focused on the driving and not if the back bumper is still in place. Your daily drive will lose value by you using it in the desert. Your weekend warrior probably gains value, because anyone buying it from you wants to know it is sand trained. I look at it this way. I do not think you would encourage your wife to wear her Jimmy Choos in the desert. But taking your massively expensive car ...

@J J unfortunately the present circumstances do not allow us to be ourselves, slowly but surely some restrictions are being lifted. After we have fought this battle to come out of Covid19 we will celebrate with Aloo Parathas and chai.

We have heard of unfortunate accidents while someone is left inside an idling car. Leave alone the harmful gases accumulating and the whole area becoming a incubator. Probably not a great idea - except in winters.

I am wondering how much they charge? If there is a different price as compared to the normal saloon versus an SUV or 4x4? How many people allowed in a car? Besides the first 2 people in the car, none of the rear seat passengers will enjoy the movie anyways. If engine switched off and there is some window left open from Ski Dubai for some coll air, but I heard you have to tune in your car to FM Radio for the audio, for one you will loose your car battery with 2 hours FM radio and car switched off. Do they have cable boosters to get you started if your battery fails? Secondly, you better have a good car audio to enjoy the movie. Another thought that comes to mind is buildings close by can tune in to FM radio at home and enjoy the movie for free.
