Finally after 3 pages, I can read my type of music ref - bhangra and punjabi music. Thanks Varun and Mayank. I kept quiet so far, as not to get judged same as Niki mentioned. I would listen to thumping music (Desi or Eng, doesn't matter) or nothing at all, since last few months its been nothing as one of the front speaker has a buzzing noise from sand or something. Last time I used these music apps were seriously lacking with my choice of music. Happy to try them again if anything has changed recently. @munkybizness and @varunmehndiratta I'm married to Gujrati girl and first few years were difficult for her too as all clubbing choice were my type, but then she started enjoying it too. Now she listen to her radio with headphone when we go out (easy fix), lol.

Dear Desertnauts, welcome to this Friday's AM drive. As usual, I wish to give you a preview of what's to come. Tomorrow I'll complete the drive plan by providing the final convoy numbering, and radio frequency. This drive has been designed to take us into a more challenging area than usually chosen for Newbie drives. The idea, as often with Carnity, is to explore new locations, open up new routes, at first with higher ranked convoys, and later, once better tested, also to less experienced drivers. This particular itinerary, from Murqab to Faqa, has been driven twice before, once with Intermediates, and later with Fewbie Pluses. Bringing Newbies in this area will require some attention, both on my part as leader, and on yours as drivers. I will have to adapt the track to the Newbie level, patiently finding appropriate places to cross the dunes and advance, perhaps taking some time to groom the members to face more complex obstacles, and upgrade your off-roading skills. You will have to remain as concentrated as possible, and show the utmost respect for discipline, respecting convoy distancing and safety protocols to minimize refusals and stucks. There will be enough time to complete the drive, considering the cooler temperatures at dawn (which will give the opportunity of prolonging the drive, if necessary, into the morning), and the relatively short distance to cover (even though on complex terrain). The area will be at first characterized by tall, open dunes, with some limited amount of vegetation (small bushes), then it will slowly present more tight cordons, lower in height, with still some vegetation. The most complex element will be represented by some very tight, technical dunes (low, close to each other, with sharp ridges and soft bowls), which we will do our best to avoid, navigating within a more accessible corridor, until we'll reach northern Faqa's sabkha. To criss cross, the most important is the technique: The approach angle to the ridge, getting your self parallel to the ridge, ridding it and then crossing over. In my opinion, this can be done in most dunes if the basics are followed, unless ofcourse if there are rocks on the other side. But that's the risk the Lead takes. The Lead also keeps in mind the convoy level that is driving behind and whether everyone would be able to do it safely. On bigger and taller dunes, in addition to the possible fear factor one should do it with the least amount of indecisiveness. If you are at the middle or the back of the convoy, you need to trust that if the cars in front have done it, I can do the same.

Once you start leading and become more and more comfortable with the area, you will be able to make a pretty fair judgement on how the dune is formed. Like i mentioned the trip lead can ride the ridge (or just next to it) to have a quick peek to the other side and then take the call.

Good question @salah2u. Yes there are definitely dunes which are not advisable to criss-cross, either because they have a sharp drop, or the shape is irregular. The trip lead or marshal will usually be able to assess this by side sloping on that dune first and having a look at the other side. Based on the drive level (Fewbie, Fewbie Plus, IM, or Extreme) he will be able to choose if it's doable to criss-cross with the convoy or not. In Qudra area for example there are some areas where you have rock formations at the bottom of the dune. These surrounding dunes can be tricky to criss-cross as you don't want to end up inbetween those rocks.

How is a V6 400bhp?

That is very high. I would be expecting 17-19 l/100 km Few things you need to check: 1) Tire pressure. Should be between 35-38 psi 2) Maintenance intervals. When was the last maintenance done, are air filters clean and injector cleaning done ? 3) Driving style. As you mentioned mostly highways on cruise control should be no issue.

I totally agree, i even have a metal playlist (a couple of those actually) , 2 throwback playlists (as in late 90s to early 2000s), and a hype playlist. I can share them if you like

2019 comes in v8 5.6L 400hp and v6 4.0L 275hp. The older 2010-2015 models come in two v8 options both 5.6L but one with 320Hp and 400hp. Basically on such a heavy vehicle the fuel consumption on a v6 is very much similar to the v8. In certain occasions I found that the v8 consumes less! It depends how you drive the vehicle and at what speeds, can vary pretty much between city and highway. The best I got on highway and on speeds less than 120 (around 110) was 14L/100km, but this if you reset the meter while driving on the highway. Combined city+highway: i never got anything better than 19-20L/100km. Sometime it goes up to 22L/100km. If you drive it un city alone, then you need a petrol station connected behind you.

See Spotify has Arabic music, but you have to type the song name in English and the spelling is all over the place, so I just bought YouTube premium and made my life easier. I use Spotify for on road and normal days, and YouTube for off road since I can download the songs like Spotify.

Where is the bhangra emoji when you need one?! Some of my passengers over time have complained that I listen to "truck* driver music" - not sure what that means (of course I do). I've been behaving because I would never hear @Gauravon the radio *The indian definition of a truck - an F150 doesn't count

@Frederic Excellent post, it was very helpful. on criss-crossing , a question though, can there be a situation where other side of the dune is too steep, could it be too dangerous to criss cross to other side, or does every dune allows you to criss cross ? Please share your experience and advise.

Love this idea and thanks for starting the playlist @Frederic. My current music taste is inspired by my 10yo daughter (Korean pop) and my 9yo son (dude perfect YouTube backing music!). As such I will just consume and not contributes at this stage! I like the playlist evolving into a more eclectic catalog with @Srikumar addition! I’ll get myself back into Spotify and hopefully share some of my desert cruising favorites… be warned I like mellow tunes so no judgement if it’s a different style of driving music

I love the soft rocks of 70s and 80s like Bee Gees, Dire Straits and yes, I absolutely love the Eagles with one of my favorites being The Last Resort. But with the Indian music collection improving on Spotify, my current playlist are old Hindi songs from the Black and White Days of the 50s and 60s, where poetry, lyrics and the singer's voice were given more importance than the music. That was a time when you would have singers going through an entire song in a single take with a live orchestra. In Hindi songs, my all time favorite singers are Mohd. Rafi, Mukesh and Manna Dey. In Instruments, one of my favorite Indian instruments is the Santoor. Try listening to the music of Shiv Kumar Sharma's Spirit of Kashmir in the early hours of the day. It transports you to another world.
