  1. It was really wonderful to be a part of the group learning to negotiate the desert. Thought I knew how to drive but today my skills were upgraded to start trying the loose sand as always I was driving on Tarmac. All the time after having the XTERRA I look at sand dunes and wished to ride up them but was wary without having some guidance and to tell the truth I got some very valuable guidance today. @sertac was very helpful and I really love the way he rescued me in times of need. Hopefully once I finish the full course will drive with him and @Frederic in the desert off to glorious sun rises and sunsets. The rest of the team I wish them good luck and hope to meet them in the next drives and learn dune bashing with them together.

  2. Thank you @Brette and @Foxtrot Oscar for an excellent drive taking us from Murquab to solar park. Having driven around Sharjah area for a few weeks, this was a real treat in terms of scenery and driving techniques. @Ahab Shamaa am happy that @Foxtrot Oscar and I had a nice influence on your daughter ๐Ÿ˜Š. It's been @Rahimdad 's dream to have a ladies convoy and it does indeed make us proud to be at least close to that๐Ÿ˜‰. Cheers to the whole team..๐Ÿ‘ Enjoy the week guys and see you soon..

  3. Dear All This was a great fewbie drive - one of the best I ever had with great planning for ridge riding and crisscrossing - @Pancho you made our ride very amazing @Chaitanya D you really payed a very important role here supporting everyone in this ride, when you put your lights on you changed the desert to noon time again - and the spices of technical dune crossing at the end of the ride to reach our exit was really amazing @Janarthan your major role as center forward was played perfectly making sure the convoy is moving from the middle, for me personally following your track made the ride much easier for me specifically when am seeing you doing it I got the confidence that yes I can follow his track and will pass safely I had couple of refusals which I was able to recover with @Anish S support and @Janarthan and @Chaitanya D didn't spare an effort to come back and help, even my totally stuck on the top of the ridge was self recovered by the support of the team on the radio @Anish S as a sweep making sure the full convoy is moving safely from the back - I recognized you on top of the dune watching the convoy moving safely Thank you all for your efforts and for the great afternoon ride Looking forward to see you all again next weekend

  4. @Chaitanya D @Pancho @Janarthan @Anish S and the whole team, thanks for a wonderful drive! We enjoyed a very nice mix of technical areas and long nice dunes in South Qudra area. Since I was located in the first half of the convoy, mainly I took photos of @Probir Mukherjee @Jon M and @Chaitanya D Kindly find a bit more photos in the gallery. Thanks!

  6. Unfortunately my roster for December is to unstable, so I donโ€™t think is fare to the rest of Liwa eager off-roaders to make a last minute cancellation in case of a last minute change. Please Frederic remove me from the drive to Liwa and give my space to the next on the waiting list. I will take my chances at the last minute in any of the drives if I manage to be available and there is a space available at that time .

  14. Trip Report: Thank you everyone for arriving on time inspite of heavy patrolling and temporary blocking of the Bab al Shams exit from Adnoc round about. No one who signed up missed the drive which is very satisfying for all the effort we are putting in the backend to accommodate as many Carnity members to get on to a drive every weekend in a very transparent way, Well done all of you. Writing this report reminds me of the cool wind buzzing through our cars riding on some "Buttery" dunes which Qudra had to offer from the entry point right till then end owing to a cloudy day which made the weather awesome for an outing like this. We squeezed most of the long range dunes on offer doing our bit of long slopes, sides, ridge rides and criss crossing. All of you drove really well in all areas , which is indeed commendable for a fewbie drive. Some of the drivers I was riding with were first timers , and after initial few minutes realized that you were well acquainted with the basics which are advised to you all on newbie drives by our more experienced Mar$hals. With sun setting and the sight getting more enjoyable we started heading to our exit , towards the tarmac beside Hamari well. The last technical dunes before the exit tested your drivability in tight spots where we did have some refusals but everyone were able to self recover and exit out well on time. Of course as it was dark, we did enjoy few min of night drive which is a different challenge and experience. @Pancho lead the almost all of the drive , and I was his second lead. It was a delight to be behind him and the way he calmly took us around the "Buttery" dunes was simply remarkable. Thank you very much for a great drive Pancho, which made our evening memorable. @Probir Mukherjee in the mighty Land Cruiser was a different driver from what I knew about him. Fantastic control on ridges, exiting out when you dont have the momentum perfectly and great improvement in communicating on the Radio. I hope your friend enjoyed the drive as much as everyone did.Self recovery from a tight soft deep pocket was a treat to watch ( pictures in the Gallery) @Jon M driving the montero was seen enjoying the moment. Some nice self recovery from a incline when he was side stuck on a dune, well done and great driving buddy @Mikhail Lukichev surfed his Prado on the sand as good as it can be, hardly any refusal and calls on the Radio which is testament for some fantastic driving done by you. Thank you for some nice snaps, appreciated. @Janarthan was our center forward , executing his role to perfection and always ready to help in any situation. Having you on any drive is a comfort for the lead and all in the convoy as one is rest assured that help is available when needed anytime. Thank you so much Jana @Mahmoud Hamzawy driving a Prado behind Jana was remarkable. Very well controlled and well driven, getting out of refusals from some tight situation was a delight tot watch from distance. Great control when you reversed and recovered your self , well done! @Goutam drove the Yellow wrangler really well. Absolutely unheard on the radio and hardly any issues, perfect driving . Well done @Tariq Carrimjee with an open top wrangler and all the gizmos for offroad is a delight to have on any drive. Great to see you enjoy the driving , especially on this day as the weather was simply perfect to enjoy what you have. @Islam Soliman our late addition to this drive and always a treat to see how well you drive a massive beast. Very well controlled driving , even in some tight spots and some great advise in situations where we needed. Well done Habibi @Anish S was our sweep and helped in situation which were tricky at times. Great to have a conversation with you when we had a break and know more about you and how you, yourself need and feel what you have to improve. This is what will make everyone a better off road driver in the long run. Thank you so much for all the assistance, and thanks to your copilot @Veedooshee for some great pictures We drove close to 52 Km, in about 3hrs 30 min with an approx stop time of 25 min, some stats to share. Of course these are not needed and do not convey the quality /sense of enjoyment we had during the drive. See you all again soon , while you enjoy a short week at work.

  15. Found an answer in Intermediate drive: @Heisem: alternatively you can install a kill switch for your Prado at xxxxxx xxxxxxxx, i paid 250AED. Kills the ABS, traction control and airbags. I did that for the FJ i dont think the electronics are that much different. Ah forgot i was not supposed to mention garage names on this forum.. Any good offroad garage will do it. Ras Al Khor area is where i go.

  16. Truly appreciate @Chaitanya D @Jeandre Bezuidenhout and anish they were extremely helpful.. I had a couple of stucks but they were easy ones however near the end my car had a nasty stuck near wedged between two sides of depression and it took quite an effort to move it.. once again @Jeandre Bezuidenhoutmighty rubicon came to the rescue.. over all a very valuable learning experience. Most got stuck amd we had 3 pop outs as well. @Chaitanya D a great marshal to have.

  19. Hi @Athula Dharmadada A Newbie drive would be a better option if you are planning to bring family along. As I mentioned earlier this is extreme terrain which will demand the maximum of your vehicle for a whole day. There is still space available and will make the experience better for your family. Driving for 5-6 hours in this terrain as a passenger will be very demanding.

  20. Hello Team, It was a nice get together and enjoyed every bit of it! Both Fredaric and Sartaj were amazing. The brief at the start was excellant and took away the nervousness. The tips coming in from Fradaric on when to accelarate, when to decelarate etc., were top notch and helped a lot in not getting stuck. Sartaj put in his expertise whenever needed. The machine Pajero was amazing as well responded to all the needs, never thought the stuff we did was possible with it! Last but least, the team was great and kudos to everyone! And to anyone who still havent decided to do this, it is an amazing experience which we need to go for. Afterall, no point in keeping your 4x4 as a showcase! Looking forward to the next!

Thanks to all of todayโ€™s drivers for being so fabulous and allowing me to take you galavanting through the desert. I had so much fun! Thanks to @Brettefor his wonderful support , @Veedooshee for executing a great second lead. Itโ€™s always a pleasure to see @Ahab Shamaa and his truck of many gadgets. Likewise @Archibald Jurdi you get better and better with that lovely car of yours. Well done too @Lucky sAm for handling your car so well in those technical dunes. @Rajeevan Vickneswaran had a great drive too and of course the Xterra posse took everything the desert threw at them, well done @Vineeth John Joseph @Sajit Modiyil @Rizwanm2 Until next time โ˜บ๏ธ

  22. While offroading, we cross dunes by using different methods, based on how the dune is formed and what the drive level is. Once you have spent some time in the desert, you will slowly start to pay more attention to the dune formations and how we cross them. Once you reach Intermediate and Advance level, you'll need to start learning how to read these dunes in order to navigate and create your planned routes in the desert. As a rule of thumb, the prevailing wind in UAE is blowing from a North-Western direction to South-East direction from 10AM onwards. At night and in early morning it will be reversed and blow from the South-East to North-West. This is something you should remember and you will notice when you zoom into certain areas with your navigation app (Google Maps, Gaia, MotionX, Mytrails,...) you will notice that the wind from that side has caused the dunes to take on their shape. This is a general rule and will not always apply, as you will see that in certain areas where wind is coming from different directions, you will see for example "star" dunes appearing. There are different types of dunes which are separately described below. As you can see in below picture, a dune is formed when the prevailing wind blows on a mound of sand, where the grain will move into the wind direction and create a ridge. The sand which falls on the other side of the ridge, creates a slipface, and this sand is not compacted by the wind. This is the main reason why we generally drive on the prevailing wind side or the convex side of the dunes on the Newbie level. "A dune is a curiously dynamic creature," wrote Farouk El-Baz in National Geographic. โ€œOnce formed, a dune can grow. It can change shape and move with the wind. It can even breed new dunes. Some of these offspring may be carried on the back of the mother dune. Others are born and race downwind, outpacing their parents. [Source: Farouk El-Baz, National Geographic, February 1982] The shape of dunes is affected by things like the strength, direction and consistency of the winds; the consistency and amount of sand; the hardness of the terrain and the amount of vegetation. Below we will describe the most common dunes found in the UAE. Different Dunes Crescent or Barchan Dune This is the most common dune. It forms the shape of a crescent moon when the wind blows from one direction. We generally use the words concave and convex to describe both sides of the dune: * Concave is a shape that curves inwards. * Convex is a shape that curves outwards. Crescent-shaped mounds generally are wider than long. On the concave side you will have the slipface. These dunes form under winds that blow from one direction, and they also are known as barchans. Parabolic Dune A parabolic dune is similar in shape to a barchan, but it is just the opposite. The tips of this dune point into the wind, and its main body migrates with the wind, forming a depression between the tips. Because of this formation, parabolic dunes are also known as blowout dunes. These dunes often occur when vegetation stabilizes sediments and a U-shaped blowout forms between clumps of plants. Example of Parabolic dunes near Faya: https://goo.gl/maps/ob8xu3y8VJJvF6hk8 Longitudinal or "Seif" Dunes They are also often referred to to as "sand ridges" or "seifs". Their length can range from a few meters to many kilometers and their height from a couple meters high to a couple hundred meters high. Wind pushes the sand and forms ridges parallel to the prevailing wind direction with slip faces either side of the crest. Linear dunes are straight or slightly sinuous sand ridges typically much longer than they are wide. They may be more than 160 kilometers long. Linear dunes may occur as isolated ridges, but they generally form sets of parallel ridges separated by miles of sand, gravel, or rocky interdune corridors. Some linear dunes merge to form Y-shaped compound dunes. Many form in bidirectional wind regimes. The long axes of these dunes extend in the resultant direction of sand movement. Barchanoid Dunes These ridges are similar to Barchan dunes. They are connected in long crescentic waves as the sand supply is much greater than that which forms a Barchan Dune. Star Dunes These dunes are formed when there are several prevailing wind directions - there is a complex wind regime. Typically there are three or more slip faces, whilst the dunes do not migrate they grow in height. Star dunes are radially-symmetrical, spyramidal sand mounds with slipfaces on three or more arms that radiate from the high center of the mound. They are created when the winds blow equally from every direction, causing the sand dune to grow many extensions and resemble a star. They are rare and are fairly stable and remain in the same place. Some are landmarks with names. Example of a Star dune: https://goo.gl/maps/jRnYghQc8ACzVz6T7 With this knowledge, the next time you step into the desert, you can start looking at the different dune formations, and this will give you lots of knowledge that you'll be able to apply in the future when leading and navigating off-road drives.

  23. As we have been respecting authorities guidance & Carnity COVID guidelines to resume desert drives with caution by keeping social distance and wearing mask at all times outside the vehicle Unfortunately few off-roaders have difficulty in understanding and abiding these guidelines. As published in the national newspaper of UAE, everyone need to understand that still there are no gatherings allowed and authorities are issuing fine for 10,000 AED for host and 5,000 AED for attendees. https://gulfnews.com/uae/health/people-caught-violating-covid-19-safety-instructions-prosecuted-1.1591381059748 If you spot anyone stepping out of the car not wearing a mask, please remind them on the radio immediately. As we all are in this together, so we all have to help each other to remind. Failing to abide below list of restriction will result in an immediate ban from Carnity Off-road Club: FIRST WARNING Minimum 1 month ban from joining any Carnity off-road Club drives. Written warning will be issued on your Carnity profile. SECOND WARNING Minimum 6 month ban from joining any Carnity off-road Club drives. Written warning will be issued on your Carnity profile. If you do not like these restrictions, please stay at home and do not join for any off-road drives. Every Carnity Off-road Club Member has to COMPLY WITH THESE COVID19 GUIDELINES FACE MASK IS MANDATORY, WHENEVER YOU STEP OUT - NO EXCUSES. LEARN TO CONFIGURE YOUR RADIO, before the drive. Nobody will teach you or exchange radios like before. Read the detailed instructions posted here - to configure. If you still cannot configure, ask on forum ahead of time. 25. Dear @Ashok chaturvedi , I am not up there yet. Need to learn a lot before I reach what you have mentioned. We go in as a team and get out as a team, sometimes one has to raise his tolerance in tight areas as one or many cars might need help or assistance. Until all is manageable and we get out safely, its a sense of accomplishment once we hit tarmac.

Getting a better feel for the car (finding the psi that matches my driving style, learning to throttle and turn smoother, power of manual gears). Your coaching, support, patience, the stunning landscape/views PLUS no โ€˜pop outโ€™ made this a truly enjoyable experience! Enjoy your weekend all and look forward to seeing many of you again on the next newbie trip over the coming weeks! have put some pics up on the gallery however having seen what @Umar Kamal shot.... skip past mine and look at the awesome pictures he took!

I really appreciate discipline follow up as @Gaurav did today for Flag requirement and thanks to the team who saved my enjoyable day by assembling a Flag by all available sources.Sure next time I'll have my own I just forget to ask @Gaurav about one comment you made that I was speedy in one crossing ,actually to get momentum I was trying this as scaring to avoid refusal again. 36. DRIVE REPORT Leading an Absolute Newbie drive is always an adventure, and seeing the smiles again after a few hours of dune-driving makes it all worth. We started off with deflating, and stressed on the importance of getting it right. There is only a little bit of air pressure difference between 14 or 18psi, but the result can be felt immediately, so it was good to experience this and practice it right. Nevertheless after a few hours of desert driving the pressure will slowly creep up again, so it's good keeping an eye on it from time to time. The entry point brought us almost immediately into the long range dunes, where we practiced some minor sidesloping and made some nice loops. Firstly because it is fun, but also because it teaches you all about steering control and the use of momentum. The two Pajeros behind me, with @Abdul Rahman Abdul Kader doing an amazing job as second lead, and @Abilash Madhavan getting the hang of his capable Pajero, were in pursuit of my little blue, that has spent a week in the workshop and i was glad to finally take back the steering wheel. @Santhosh kumar Rajasekaran driving the mighty Range Rover, is not the easiest vehicle to learn, but you did well and kept a cool head, even when the engine starting throwing some errors and @sertac had to do some diagnosis with his magic OBD box. @Gavin Hill and @Chris Meir were excited to hit the dunes, and you guys both did amazing. Gavin, i hope your initial fear of getting the Hummer H2 stuck in the sand has been replaced with the confidence and knowledge that the key thing is momentum at all times, especially when driving a big mighty V8. You both did a cracking job ! @Rajesh Anchan and @Bala Krishnan both brought their Prados to the drive, and both drove really well ! The same applied for @Dinesh Dembla and @pramod who brought the legendary Landcruiser. Well done guys ! @Thomas Varghese you were in the back of the convoy and that is always a little bit more difficult because of the churned up sand, but you were also lucky to receive the wonderful guidance from @sertac who did an absolute amazing job today. Keep up the momentum and don't be afraid to wake up the beast that a Xterra is. You will be surprised once it wakes up Moving forward you all will be joining the Newbie drives and not an Absolute Newbie drive. Drives are announced every Sunday at 11 am, and they go live on Sunday at 7 pm. Due to the high demand, these drives get full in about 10 minutes, so please be online at 7 pm to book your spot. UPDATE FOR NEXT WEEK: BECAUSE OF THE LIWA EVENT THERE WILL BE A LESSER NUMBER OF DRIVES ON THE WEEKEND OF 4 DECEMBER For the next drives, please bring along a deflator, pressure gauge, flag and radio as a minimum. Learn to deflate your tires and checking them precisely Learn to fix a flag on your car Learn to program and fully charge your radio Also like I mentioned during the debriefing, join the Carnity Whatsapp Drive Notification to get the latest updates on the drives, so that you can RSVP on time for the next weekend's drive. Please have a look at below topic which describes the tools needed for every level. There is a separate tutorial inside which explains which radio we recommend and how to program them: (Please do not buy the Baofeng 888S spare radio we gave you, as these cannot be programmed without a special cable and software). Please have a look at below grading structure that explains various off-road levels: See you guys soon in the sand again !

  38. I don't know about you, but I really enjoyed this drive. Yes, I will accept it was a bit 'bitty' due to the number of recoveries - but that was, more or less expected because we were doing just the sort of practice and 'exercises' where people get stuck. If you keep in mind that, as drivers that do not have lots of experience behind them to criss cross and ridge ride, it's inevitable that we will get stuck. We could have just played on the wide dunes to our heart's content and convered more ground - but then what would the learning have been: that we can drive up and down the dunes and do a bit of side slipping. Instead, we approached the crest of dune after dune and rode the ridge or crossed to the other side. We ploughed through some soft sand and even ventured into some of the smaller more entertaining dunes that Qudra has to offer. We did not get technical (anyone interested I will post a Lisali drive soon) but we got close to it. And we covered a lot of ground and different types of dune. The teamwork was as always amazing - the enthusiasm to help each other out is astounding sometimes. The area around Qudra has so much to offer, and was we saw this morning, a lot of that area is not regularly travelled. It means we can drive without worrying that other convoys will come along (think Pink Rock or Fossil Rock) not, until we get close to the lakes do we need to worry about cross tracks. Highlights of the day? I am not sharing that one, because what goes on in Qudra stays in Qudra. Let's leave it that there are just some challenges that you might think twice before making. There were some excellent perfromances today. It's really great to see how drivers develop from Newbie through Fewbie and on to higher ranks. No specific feedback today because i think that everyone learned something and it would be good to think about what your key takeaway on the day was yourself. @Jeepie - sorry to choose a hobby that means we have to get up at 4am every Friday. As ever your help held it all together today. @Nivin it was a bit of a workout with all the diging - and you did great For those driving next week in Liwa - make sure your car (that means tyres, valves, flags, oil etc) are all in good order. It would be a real shame if you had the chance now and it was your vehicle that fails because of something you could have had a look at in the next few days. Liwa is simply not the sort of place you can 'wing it'. We can get away with it in Qudra because we are 15 km from a road at any time. In Liwa the roads are 50km or more away, and there's no recovery truck that can make its way in. We all saw the car in the bowl in Qudra this morning that had been left by its owner - you really don't want that to be you next week. As an anniversary drive, it was great. A chance to enjoy a bit of the community of Carnity and a great group with which to share the drive. Looking forward to seeing you all again in the sand soon.

  42. Hello everyone, thanks for the partial drive, it was being very fun... I drove home (RAK) with the car, after changing to 4x2 the noise was much less, and checking mow, its probably axle bering issue probably because of a ripped rubber cover that doesn't allow sand to get in... so small details that we should check in the cars.. See you in the sand !!!

  44. @Ahab Shamaa we never leave anyone behind. I really appreciate your kind gesture, but I would really like your smile through your amazing FJ. At our age we already face everything with a smile, but Liwa experience like @Wrangeld put it is awesome and with an aching back will leave a smile on everyone's face till we head to Liwa again. Sure it is challenging, but we wouldn't invite all level of drivers if it was not possible. However you have to be aware that it's not a usual day drive, instead it's a journey which will turn boys to men. Thus men like you and I need to pull up our socks and show the boys how it's done.

  46. Another superb example of good communication and working together on this recovery between @Jeandre Bezuidenhout and @Neale Faulkner. Efficient and effective! Not always the easiest when itโ€™s at an angle.
