@Gaurav bhai, i replaced the gear oil and filter original about a month back.

@Fuad thank you for your feedback.

@desertdude thank you for the information. I will go to a gear specialist this Saturday and get it evaluated. Any idea if in the rebuild only sprag clutch will be replaced or it will be a complete rebuild. Sorry for being so naive.

I was forced to replace the complete unit as my quote for rebuild was way to higher than a scrap one. It started with me the same . Gear doesn't engage to D and neglected it and was lost in desert. Jz take care of it before offroading further.

    all it was about Pajero.

This started about 3 months back, but the recent experience is what has got me thinking I need the experts advise.

My Nissan pathfinder 2001 R50 automatic when started in the morning would give a delay of 3 - 4 seconds after putting it in D to engage into gear. It seemed a bit strange but when I showed to a garage they told me to drive it on and when the gear is completely gone they would replace it with one from the scrap. But when i started it up this Friday morning for our off-road drive and put it to D the gear just would not bite, when put into reverse it was fine, so I tried the 1st gear and it engaged instantly, slowly I shifted to 2nd gear and only on the highway i put it to D. The drive was smooth as if nothing was wrong. This has been happening since and I have to start from the 1st, than 2nd and lastly D and it drives smooth. Upon showing to one of the garage they have told me the rubbers and seals inside the gearbox are gone and so the oil is not holding the pressure. Although the garage knew of people driving with similar issue for about 3 years before changing the gearbox, the person was driving on-road and never tok his car off-road.

I am a bit worried as with the season at hand I would not like to loose my car on one of the long drives. Besides I have seen and incident with a bad gearbox that I would not like to repeat again. There are only 2 solutions to this problem as per the garage. The first solution is to buy from scrap which is going to cost about AED 2000/- for the gear and another AED 500/- for their labour, oil, etc. This comes with a 5 day guaranty. The other solution is to rebuild the gear box, which means the gear needs to be opened and all seals and worn out parts replaced, the complete cost of this with labour is coming to AED 1500/- with a claim that the garage does only automatic gearbox and are really good at it, in addition to their claim they are going to give me a warranty of 1 month. I am tempted to rebuild the gear, what do you guys do if you are in my place?

Thanking you in advance for all your advise and any alternate solutions.

Rebuilding the Transmission rather than using a second hand as you never know how reliable it is and about condition. Once you rebuild you are 100% sure about the condition.
    jz my 2 cents.

@Wrangeld thank you, but it's not trademark to me. It is @Srikumar who started this theory and I like you am following the same.

@Shamil I agree on the fact that you should know what the error was and should be curious why it pops up in the first place. I have been a victim of too many computers on board and too much hassle, but better to be aware and ready.

I always had Abs fault on my pajero and even mitsubishi al habtoor told me its my RH abs sensor faulty and need to be replaced quoted around 1200 for fixing.i replaced all sensors vice versa from my friends car and everything was ok. Took it to a local electrician and he found it was a wiring issue and corrected it n few bucks.

    So my 2 cents-

Don't completely trust OBD Scanner some mechanics are far better than them. But dont neglect it too it hurts a lot.

    What do you guys think?

    Biggest Mistake-

    1.Didn't deflate tyre

engage 4L. Do blip blip turn wheels left and right making way. clear sand on wheels and he is out.
When he is giving gas other car should support him.

he is roaring his engine which make him stay there for whole weekend.

    i love that Car.

    Thanks for this, Fred.

I need to have a conversation with you during the next event about this ('cause i don't understand all the technical language that you're using)

I have a 2009 Pajero, and my car is reacting weirdly (changing gear from the 1st to the second even if i'm in manual, when the engine is getting high in RPM), and other things strange.

Thanks to talk about this topic, it could explain a lot.

That exactly the same thing @Frederic was explaining ‘upshift issues’.

when in manual mode car automatically upshifts to next gear upon reaching desired RPM and we looses all of sudden power while climbing a dune .

Models after 2011 doesn't has this problem. RPM reaches to 6500 without any issues and no issues of upshifting.

For all the Pajero 2007-2011 owners around, this topic has been addressed in the past on Mitsubishi forums and was brought up here a while back, but i wanted to compile all information in one topic to finally condense all information and share our experiences.

The famous issue that Gen4 Pajeros built between 2007 and 2011 have, is the automatic upshifting in tiptronic mode once the rpm reaches 5200rpm. While for overlanding or other offroading activities this is not so much of an issue, it is a BIG issue for the dunebashers amongst us if attempting a climb on the bigger dunes (Faya, Sweihan, Liwa, etc...).

With some practice you might try to stay just below that 5200rpm point to keep it in the gear, but this is far from easy and on bumpy dunes keeping your foot stable on the pedal is easier said than done.

On a 3.8 Pajero the torque reaches its peak at around 2750 rpm and starts to decline after 4500 rpm. At that point the horses have to take over and your 184 kW (247 HP) is reached at 6000 rpm. When limiting at 5200 rpm you would lose out 14 kilowatts (18 Hp).

While looking on the other Mitsubishi forums, 2 options have come forward which i will describe below:

    1. Omani Gear Hack:The Omani Gear Hack works by disabling the output speed sensor which will stop the car from auto shifting. This hack is at your own risk only and although it solves the upshift issue, it puts your car in limp mode and will activate your check engine light, which would also hide other potential dangers ! You can find the detailed instructions attached. It mentions to use the car in 4LLC mode which we do not recommend doing. Maybe the hack works in 4H or 4HLC too, but haven't received confirmation of that yet.

    2. Unichip RPM Cutoff: This is a lesser intrusive solution using Unichip to limit the RPM to 5200. The Unichip ECU piggy back computer with the RPM cutt off option allows you to put a limit on the RPM to prevent the gear from autoshifting in sports mode. Unichip comes with a 5 map selector, so you set one of the maps on the RPM limit at 5200 then car will not upshift on all gears when in tip tronic mode. However you will not be able to unlock the power beyond 5200rpm...

On top of that, most of the GEN4 Pajeros have the ASC (Automatic Stability Control) that needs to be switched off during offroading. If your ABS is still kicking in, than it is also advisable to remove the ABS relay in the engine bay.  (relay, not the fuse as these ones are really hard to pull out). Your car will now change in a Christmas tree dashboard.

Looking at all these issues to get a "newer model" car to behave as it should in the desert, it comes as no surprise that many dune bashers revert back to using older cars which don't have all these sensors on board.

PS Does any of you have experience with the Pedal Commander, and would it have any benefical effect on the sluggish reaction of the Pajero ?

And i will never support Omani Hack as it transforms vehicle into safe mode restraining many things. Never ever use 4LLc other than recoveries if you don't want to kill transmission.

i am one of the victim.

With a proper 2 inch lift and a little shaving of the rubber and plastic parts around you should be OK. After installation turn full lock left and check if any rubbing issues, than full lock right and check for rubbing issues. Identify where the problem is and keep a pair of scissors handy. You will make it our alive.

Hahaha you are genius with those scissors
