  1. What a fantastic morning's drive! I am physically tired from sawing the wheel back and forth for 5 hours. @Islam Solimantook us on a technical, convoluted and ultimately challenging fewbie plus course and it was just so much fun. We had a heap of refusals, go-rounds and stucks but at the end of the day, we learn from every event don't we? I got to do my first tug job and enough shovelling to keep me happy for weeks. Thanks for giving the the responsibility of second lead, it was a thrill to be up front again boss. Big thanks to all the team on this drive, the spirit was excellent and the team work was faultless. BRAVO!

  2. What a day! Full credit to the management team for hearing our pleas and organising a second lead to take half the kean Sweihanites and make a second convoy @Mehmet Volgaand @Srikumaryou are both legends in my eyes. Poor old Sweihan is in a shocking state, its rutted, littered and crisscrossed by awful ruinous bulldozer tracks and countless kilometres of electrical cable, it breaks my heart to see this vandalism. Our little team on the second convoy set off and had some bouncy old travelling along with some lovely side slope and ridge riding action and then... Oopsies, we suffered a mechanical failure and had to limp out early. It happens and it is ineveitable that when it does that the team will swing into action and do the needful to ensure safety and support for those in need. Well done guys, there was no complaining and a very competent effort by all. Looking forward to mother nature restoring Sweihan in her own good time:-(

  3. Your engine is an air pump. You make it easier to get air in/exhaust out and you’re half way there. Your 3.8 is a MIVEC engine so it only makes real power up high in the rpm range… you can help it do it’s job by putting free flow exhaust and hp air filter in it but my experience has been that getting the ECU flashed provided the greatest boost. The new map raised the rev limiter 500rpm and also cuts the cooling fan in earlier as well as giving a power boost. IMHO, money well spent.

The only opinion I voiced was when @Warren Flay gave the idea of tying the rope to the A pillar to anchor the car of @Michel Van Woudenberg and to which @sertac agreed which as per me was not a good idea and to call the help of senior @Frederic who was somewhere nearby with Absolute Newbies in a private conversation with @sertac and to everybody to stay clear of the tilted car and not to shovel anywhere until Frederic arrives. Before @Frederic arrived, @Srikumarhad arrived and took charge and safely got back the car recovered with precise instructions. If that was my voiced comments I apologize to @sertac who was the trip lead even though I feel it was the right thing as Michel & his passengers disembarked from the car immediately after the car came to a stop and shut of the engine. I agree @Warren Flay is a trained firefighter and have done numerous extreme recoveries like this in the past but this was not an extreme recovery of his standards and when senior members who can do this in a safe way are around why damage a 300000 AED brand new LC300 which has run only 75km. I didn't have the heart to see @Michel Van Woudenberg going back home in a damaged car with the roof tilted to the right side. I agree I was wrong and should have shut my mouth and sat inside my car turned to the other side and enjoy my music system.

I sincerely apologize to @sertac for my advice and to @Warren Flay for my concern about his extreme recovery procedures not letting happen. Thankful to @Srikumar for rising upto the situation and immediately upon arriving at the location for instructions to untie the extra long array of ropes (how many were they?) tied to Warren's car and the A pillar of Michel's car. If you would have noticed I just went back to my car and watched Srikumar recover the LC 300 without a scratch. I apologize to @Michel Van Woudenberg  also for letting him drive the new car without a scratch. I promise I won't be joining any of @sertac's drive as communicated to me from the club office. I was silent on this subject till now but as @Warren Flay has mentioned me in his post I had to apologize to every member of that convoy.

No apology required brother, this is a team sport and all opinions are worthy of consideration.

  5. Well what an eventful drive! My first at sweep and I have to say first of all, respect to all the previous sweeps out there, that soft Dubai sand REALLY gets choppy by the time nine other trucks have slid, skidded and wheelspun their way across it!

We had a nice technical, ridgy didge track through the dunes with lovely cool temperatures to keep things calm. Quite a few refusals and stucks indicate the the challenge was real but I have to say, as usual the teamwork was tip top and we all swung in behind the fellows in need to get things moving again. We enjoyed a special 'learning event' when the mighty land whale of @Michel Van Woudenbergdecided to have a little lie down in a pocket which required managment intervention to help extricate. All good, lots of opinions voiced (thanks @Thomas Varghese) and a safe rescue was achieved.

My thanks to @sertacfor planning an interesting course and to @Serafinofor keeping a steady hand on the tiller with a special mention to @ShereenMKrolling at number 9 in such a competent and sure footed way, I never had to worry about what was happening in front of me, I could just concentrate on picking the ruts I was going to plow through ;-)

Already looking forward to the next one.

  6. Thanks @Wrangeld for organising, thanks @Shaaz Sha for leading, thanks @sertacfor 2nd leading, thanks @Alain Canivet-Abikhalilfor CF'ing and thanks @Matt.Tfor sweeping my first drive at Fewbie Plus. I really enjoyed myself and the terrain gave me ample opportunity to experiment with my 'certainly not legal in Sharjah' exhaust... I am amazed at how beaten down and filthy this area of desert has become and it saddens me that people still dump their trash with utter disregard, it is only a matter of time until the authorities start clamping down on EVERYBODY as punishment for these filthy few. If the club does want to run a cleanup drive, I am certainly in. Anyway, rant over, it was a good mix of technical dune driving and some challengingly rutty and well used side slopes. I look forward to going 'home' to Sweihan...

    Yep

I did get a car that I drive only towards the desert or towards Al Quoz...

Btw, the Valvetronic CCP specs say 91dB max, and dirving it never felt unconfortable or got in the way of listening to music or the Comms radio. I will measure it though.

I find mine drones a bit at highway speed but from outside it is fine. I may put a ‘resonator’ on the backend to tone it down just a little… we’ll see😆

  8. My two cents worth (as I'm sure you already know...) none of the above listed upgrades are even remotely 'necessary' and the personal experience of every person who has gone down the various routes to personalise their rides will vary widely.

Right! having put up my caveats, here is my experience.

I fitted a 40mm lift kit being springs and shocks. At this level, there is no need to upgrade the upper arms. This allows me to hit the bumps harder and land softer (including judder bars on the road) I 100% recommend this upgrade as the car drives far better with this modification (in my opinion) and handles the dunes very well.

Stock 18 inch rims remain with no spacers but higher series tyres give a 5% increase in speed at same rpm which makes the car more economical on the road (ha ha) but had the effect of making what had been a 2nd gear climb into a 1st gear climb due to the higher gearing. When these current tyres are finished, I will go back to the stock height tyres.

Your experience may vary but this has been mine.

    Cheers

    Wazza

  9. Thanks @Fredericthat was a lot of fun! Technical nadgery dunes in dirty old Dubai. Slow in places and speedy in others, concentration was required at all times. Thanks to @Yousef Alimadadiand @munkybizness for competent CF and Sweep duty, It was a massive caravan today and at times it seemed to stretch to the very horizon but everyone was doing well with minor self extractions and go-arounds happening with minimum disruption. Well done everyone and looking forward to driving with you all again soon.
