  4. Drive report It was quite chilly this morning and the heavy wind made it even feel colder than it was. I was happy to have my hoodie en my scarf with me and I had my seat warmers on in the car .... Once everyone arrived and deflated, I did a quick briefing and we started to move. I explained in my briefing that we were going to do some technical terrain first, then a few kilometers on a dirt track before we would reach Faya. We had no issues at all in Suweydan and could keep a good pace so we reached Faya after 1 hour. Luckily it was very quiet at Faya so everyone had a turn to try and make it all the way up from the front. @Salarios @Yusuf Esaf @AlexPol @Jack Thomas @Nivin @Vineeth John Joseph @Karthik Krishnakumar and even @Jon M with the Montero Sport made it up ! He was very impressed with his car and he had a smile from 1 ear to the other !! The 3 Pajero's all had a try but couldn't make it and @Ranjan Das missed a few horses I'm afraid or maybe it was the very heavy tyres on his car, he was a bit disappointed he couldn't make it up but he will make it one day .... After a while, we saw @sertac convoy approaching so we made space and moved on to the bowls behind Faya. It was getting a little more busy in the area with a lot of different other convoys so we had to be careful. Everyone drove very well in and out the bowls and we didn't have any mayor issue just a few refusals which could be handled very easily. After last week's drive with a lot of shoveling, I didn't have to take out my shovel this week ! Thank you @Nivin and @Salarios for all your guidance over the radio, I was lucky to have such good support. I think everyone had a lot of fun, I sure did have a lot of fun, and I hope to see everyone again very soon .....

  5. What a wonderful afternoon desert drive. @Chaitanya D. Special thanks to @AlexPol, @Anish S & @Mahmoud Hamzawy for the support as 2nd lead, center forward and sweep respectively. @rajeshkumar rathod you did wonderful today after your 1t drive as an absolute newbie in the morning. I wish I could be this flawless during our initial days of joining the club. It was a pleasure driving with @frederic demolder & @Dodi Syahdar two new friends I made today. Seeing the way @Danish Mohammad & @Abdul Rahman Abdul Kader driving today who actually joined with me for my absolute newbie drive I'm impressed by the way the senior team members have imparted the knowledge of offroading to us. Put a smile on my face when I saw them negotiating the dunes without any hiccups and self recovering from tight situations. WOW. If this is what just a few newbie drives makes us how to learn to negotiate the desert hurdles I just awe what the fewbie drives will do to us. As this was my 5th drive with Carnity I have applied for a promotion to be a fewbie the moment I hit my computer and pray the team will grant me the opportunity to be a fewbie and grant my wish to join the future fewbie drives in my learning process. Please pray for me that my wish will be granted soon. Again I thank everybody or the wonderful evening along with my wife who enjoyed the entire drive episode and the spectacular views of the desert. Hope to meet you all very soon for another drive.

  9. @Wrangeld great drive today, different terrain than what im used to, very tight, had the nose and tail in the sand a lot but we made it. The beats is pulling well with the new air intake 🤤. The wind started making it difficult to follow the track later on which was quite interesting. @Kalahari hope you enjoyed the soup behind me ✌🏼

  14. Trip report. Today was a smooth drive. We didn`t had any major stuck or any technical issue. We needed to use the rope only 2 times. Thanks to @Mehmet Volga and @Arda Yagcioglu those situations handled well. Path between start point to Fossil rock was bit bushy. OMG this desert became a forest now. Once we reached to the Fossil Rock it was the sunrise. We had beautiful pictures and nice view to watch. After 5 min of break at Fossil Rock we start moving again. Sand formation on the Fossil Rock wouldn`t let us pass to the other side. Actually there was no sand at all, so we went around that. We start heading to the Bowl before the Faya. Man that was fun, everyone pushed their cars to the limit. While we were at the bowl @Jose Martin`s radio battery start alarming for charge. In this point we replaced the sweep position between Jose and Arda. With our new sweep we start heading to the famous Faya. We had some nice rolling dunes and finally we reached to Faya. There we met with @Vanessa8580, @Nivin and rest of their convoy. We were lucky that Vanessa was having spare radio and we landed it to Jose. Everyone made their attempted to the climb. I was impressed with everyone`s climb. After Faya we start heading to 2nd December area. On the way we noticed that Mehmet`s flag was missing. EVen he went back to find it but he wasn`t lucky. Since he lost his flag we made another change on the convoy. Now Arda became CF and Mehmet took the Sweep position. On our wasy we came across with huge camel group. One of the camel get too close to us to get some petting We had nice pictures and moment to remember. After that we had some sideys and left the area safely. Thank everyone for the drive and hope to see you again.

  16. WOW I see many of you were thinking or planning suspension upgrade and I'm happy to clear just a tip of an iceberg with above pointers as there is a big ocean lies in front of you boys to choose the correct and "useful" product. Also adding more points that I forgot to mention before: Stiffer suspension is really needed when you massively upgrade your tire size from 28 - 35 Inch. Small upgrade of 2 Inch is acceptable as many stock suspensions has 8-10 inches of travel anyways. Secondly if you plan to do rock crawling or serious mountain climbing then they are very useful too. But don't end up being a showpiece with monster truck running 35 Inch BFG with stage 3 suspension for road. Even worst you bring that showpiece to sand like going for swimming with ice hockey gears. Last but least, please don't be a guinea pig and ask for demo - certainly.

  17. Preface: Having a proper off-road suspension DOES help a lot for off-roading in negotiating cross tracks, long hill climb at a faster speed to take bumps, making a jumps - literally air-borne with all 4 wheels in the air, so that when you land on all 4 or 2 or 1 wheel first they are strong enough to hold the car weight (unlike most of stock suspensions, which are not designed for jumping). My view: All of the above benefits a Baja driver lot more to win the races than a weekend driver. Secondly any off-road suspension type, brand, budget you choose will SURELY kill the road comfort, even with adjustable setup. So if your FJC is your daily driver, do not go for off-road suspension in my opinion. I had a rally bred 18 ways adjustable suspension in my Patrol and even on the softest setting I used to have a sore back on tarmac. While raising this argument, many companies and salespeople will say now technology has changed and things have improved (might be true), so ask them to let you drive a demo car with the same suspension for an hour on highway to decide. How do you approach choosing a suspension upgrade for your car? - The day you make your FJC a weekend car, you qualify for off-road suspension. at what point does spending more give limited returns (example would the additional spend to have a setup with remote reservoirs bring proportionate benefits) After the mid range setup of 5-6K (approx) anything above is mostly offering a marginal benefit, more on paper and talks than in action. Stay away from entry level setup of 2K spend as they aren't very much advisable for real off-road fun that you wish to achieve and more focused for people who "just want a lift". Ultra higher end bracket of 20-25k Setup comes with real good benefits with long travel suspension and have super jumps capabilities. is a budget upgrade a false economy Not really, but they are just good for entry level job. Offer 2 inch lift. Period Making suspension harder without much compression or rebound damping etc. are there suspension brands that work better with certain car brands and if so, are there combination of suspension/car brand to avoid It's usually the other way around, select the brand of suspension first and then ask them FJC specific product. Then cross compare those FJC specific products of brand A vs B vs C. Reason is some company makes awesome product for one car and then replicate generic version without much research of car weight and weight distribution (front and back). Read lot of genuine google or youtube reviews than what company website reviews. suspension considerations to be avoided (example a lift via a spacer isn't desirable?) Lifting car with 2 inch spacer is not a bad idea as oppose by many suspension companies because if you lift car in 500 dhs, you wouldnt be buying 5K product. I have used my present Pajero for 2 years with rear 2 inch spacer. Now im with diesel Pajero springs which is for heavy load (not heavy duty) so I don't compromise my road comfort and still get 2 inch rear lift. Though my Pajero is a weekend car but still I value road comfort over jumps and 1 less dune as road comfort gain is substantial in my view. Ultimate choice is yours. Im still running on stock suspension as in my model I have adjustable setup with a flick of button inside the car, which I dont want to loose (If I change) and its borderline not bad for off-road at Hard setting. is the adjustability of a set of shocks valuable i like the idea of being able to easily adjust for the regular tarmac drives and adjust for our weekend drives? however is it as easy and required? do you actually end up just keeping them at offroad setting and accept a bumpier ride after a while? 99% it was a myth, now you can check by yourself if they have changed.....! In my Patrol case after months of driving I gave up and accepted the sore back as my fate. My final view: Drive your FJC in stock state as they are made of weekend offroading and they come with Bilstein 5100 shocks which are made for off-road use. When you reach to the point that stock suspension is the bottleneck and preventing you to do something extreme, then start researching on suspension upgrade specifically "SOLVING" that bottleneck. As this topic is filled with endless good and bad decision you will make based on lot of fluff floating in the market. https://www.bilstein.com/us/en/product/bilstein-b8-5100/

  18. abundance of choice is the true first world problem. Preface: I am not planning upgrades NOW, i do however want to understand/educate and research independently so when i do spend on mods, its done with more confidence and without the influence of the garages keen to 'sell'. advice needed: How do you approach choosing a suspension upgrade for your car? at what point does spending more give limited returns (example would the additional spend to have a setup with remote reservoirs bring proportionate benefits) is a budget upgrade a false economy are there suspension brands that work better with certain car brands and if so, are there combination of suspension/car brand to avoid suspension considerations to be avoided (example a lift via a spacer isn't desirable?) is the adjustability of a set of shocks valuable i like the idea of being able to easily adjust for the regular tarmac drives and adjust for our weekend drives? however is it as easy and required? do you actually end up just keeping them at offroad setting and accept a bumpier ride after a while? I have a Toyota FJ Cruiser and have been advised and reading about the following setups - any of our forum members have any real world experiences with below? (i haven't listed the full specs, just the diameters but can share more if it helps. 19. @Chaitanya D great lead and wonderful enthusiasm drive, you manged the ride by scaling from easy to moderate as the convoy moves ahead, you didn't spare an effort to come back whenever needed to help and support drivers, going through Margham desert with beautiful sights seeing was amazing, am used for your fewbie drive but was amazed how you managed this newbie one @Anish SS as always, you managed center forward position in professionalism of leaders you know perfectly how to help and support drivers to maintain safety @AlexPolour first ride together, you made it perfectly for 2nd lead position I was worried when I saw @Abdul Rahman Abdul Kader and @Thomas Varghese stuck near to each other that's why I announced on the radio and asked them to stay on standby without movement even I know it can be managed but the cars where very near to each other with families inside that's why I didn't want to risk and asked for @Anish Ssupport, as we learned in carnity ALWAYS SAFETY First, it was managed perfectly and safely Wishing I was able to be good sweep to the convoy making sure all cars moving well, sorry for the radio interference and am wishing it was managed well Over all I really liked the drive and looking forward for Afternoon fewbie drive next weekend

The buttons when pressed make a sound to show they are functioning however none work? The menu button, a/s band, up-down buttons and all numbers do not seem to work. I have removed the battery and given it some time but still not allowing any keys to work. have you experienced this previous and is there a way to hard reset the device. It’s nice having a second radio so if I can get it working that would be great! @Ale Vallecchi I do have a spare radio so am all good for tomorrow so no troubles there. thanks in advance

  24. DRIVE REPORT These winter mornings are lovely, but rather chilly this morning with the very strong wind that lasted throughout the day. I was blessed with a very strong convoy and hence I was looking to bump up the level a bit and everyone managed themselves very well Did we have shoveling ? Yes ! Did we had stuck and refusals, Yes ! Have we learned something today ? Oh Yes definitely ! With @Mario Cornejo in my second lead who never set a foot wrong in the amazing Super Safari, followed by @Adhir Saxena who was super motivated to spend his morning the desert and drove very well for a first timer. Well done ! @Matthew Ticehurst, @BipinM and @Larry Cadden brought their Wranglers to the game today and except for some minor refusals digested the terrain very well ! The same goes for the Xterra boys @Tareq Ghosheh and @rajeshkumar rathod who came to understand the capabilities of their cars. Good work guys ! @Jasim Khumi brought his wonderful short wheel base Pajero to the drive, and you did great today ! No offroad drive without a Patrol team, and @Pranjal Varsani and @Humayun Ghias both drove their big beasts like they stole it, without restraint and perfect momentum. Very impressive ! @Luca Palanca Falsini was of great help today and we both shoveled and assisted a big deal. Thanks for your help buddy ! Moving forward you all will be joining the Newbie drives and not an Absolute Newbie drive. Drives are announced every Sunday at 11 am, and they go live on Sunday at 7:10 pm. Due to the high demand, these drives get full in about 10 minutes, so please be online at 7 pm to book your spot. If you miss a spot, put your name on the waitlist asap. Generally, by Thursday with dropouts everyone does get a spot if they have waitlisted. For the next drives, please bring along a deflator, pressure gauge, flag and radio as a minimum. Learn to deflate your tires and checking them precisely Learn to fix a flag on your car Learn to program and fully charge your radio Also like I mentioned during the debriefing, join the Carnity Whatsapp Drive Notification to get the latest updates on the drives, so that you can RSVP on time for the next weekend's drive. Please have a look at below topic which describes the tools needed for every level. There is a separate tutorial inside which explains which radio we recommend and how to program them: (Please do not buy the Baofeng 888S spare radio we gave you, as these cannot be programmed without a special cable and software). Please have a look at below grading structure that explains various off-road levels: See you guys soon in the sand again !

  27. Real king of logic in sand is power to weight ratio, which nobody talk or mention as you cant do much on that, clubbed with minor variables with tires, suspension, bash plate, exhaust, air flow etc. But sadly every car mod provider make it sound like that 1% variable will make all the difference in faya climb. And when you fail after buying there product, they will simply put back on your car is too old, underpowered, previously abused engine etc. Been there done that x 3 times. Btw just to put in perspective role of suspension will help you climb faya easily and not any higher or substantially higher. Two year back me and Sri climbed Moreeb and he was little below my car height and this year we tried again and he was little bit above as he recently changed the suspension and had much better grip to climb. To put in numbers it was like 60% vs 62% height and not 92%.
    2 points
  28. No they can't either. Suspension has zero role in above scenario. Stiffer suspension can and will allow climbing faya at 60-80 speed instead of 40-50 and plus when car bounce on those 3 nasty speed bumps, stiffer suspension vehicle will not loose momentum nor the line.

  29. Off road suspension is a never ending topic of discussion among off-roaders and indeed making a separate thread for it is really highly appreciated . Thank you @Niki Patel for starting this thread in such elegant orderly fashion that surely of relevant concern I would say to every one. @Gaurav your sincere unbiased response in the relevant issues which was highlighted for me is a “gold mine “ 😉🙏🏻of reference.and now even making my decision to wait and see what the tide may bring is even more firm. I drive a stock Nissan Xterra ( only mods are considered non major such as bash plate and kill switch ) and to tell the truth I want or at least I wish to keep it this way as It’s my daily rider as well as my weekend off road leisure companion and no plans for a third car ( at least now ) and for me this vehicle is giving me the best of both worlds so far. I believe that skills refinement can partially compensate to certain extent ( example and it’s me : in my Stock suspension can’t for example take off immediately from a short distance to climb feya while another vehicle with comparable engine power and tires but with 5k suspension may do it , however I will need to adopt slightly slower approach building pace slowly ( momentum increasing slowly ) with distance needed ) then when the right place and time comes boost the beast out of it but still I have the halter straps in my hands with control ..) In conclusion it’s all what you do and what you need to accomplish in specific time and place! cheers

  30. @Ahab Shamaa you are the most dangerous kind of friend!! This started off as a thread to take a considered choice when spending AED for suspension and now you have my mind drifting to convert the FJ into a weekend car and buy another daily drive!!!!! Your profile needs to come with a warning! I will keep reminding myself I cannot buy another car ... and get my mind back to the feedback and advice from Gaurav

  32. @Gaurav this is incredibly useful and needs to be pinned in the ‘advices’ section. Understandably it’s impossible to get such unbiased and experienced based guidance like this!! I have only skimmed the content and will likely have follow up questions ... which i hope others joining the thread also contribute to! .. knowing a spacer isn’t ‘bad’ I will come back to ask about leveling the FJ as it has the factory lean (lower at the front & slight drop to drivers side) massive thanks for taking the time to write this!! A lot for me to consider

  34. So you have decided to become an Offroad Enthusiast by either joining an Offroad-Club, or becoming a Solo Adventurer to explore the UAE deserts ? Then surely the time has come to start investing in the proper offroad gear. Good quality offroad gear will be your biggest help to be self-reliant and to enjoy this sport thoroughly. After all you don't want to be stranded in the middle of the desert with unsafe or unreliable equipment. We have compiled a list of essential tools you should have as per our club levels, and included some recommended gear which we have used in the club with good results. OFF-ROAD FLAG (NEWBIE AND ABOVE) A proper off-road flag is safely mounted with a bracket, or suction cup, and does not fall off on the first windy day. You can either buy a very decent flag like the AOR ones, or go to the nearest dune-buggy shop, or Dragon Mart. A fishing rod with flag also does the job. TYRE DEFLATOR AND PRESSURE GAUGE (NEWBIE AND ABOVE) Deflating your tyres will be a weekly practice, and the accuracy of your tyre-pressure gauge will make the difference between struggling in the sand or floating on it. You can buy them in ACE, Speedex, or Dragon Mart and it is advisable to buy two different models to double-check the accuracy. Most cheaper models work well on normal tyre pressures (35 psi) but start to give inaccurate readings below 15psi. Deflating your tyres can be done with a stem removal tool or a quick deflator. Whatever works for you. How to deflate your tyres is well documented here: FULL-SIZE SHOVEL (NEWBIE AND ABOVE) Next to your Carnity buddies, a proper shovel will be your best friend in the desert. You should get a full-size laborer shovel, and not a small foldable camping spoon/shovel. Buy a shovel with a handle, and a v-shaped tip, you will find them in general hardware shops. Example below is perfect, and will allow you to displace a lot of sand. TWO WAY RADIO (NEWBIE AND ABOVE) While driving with an offroad-club, a two-way radio is essential to communicate with the rest of the convoy and to receive instructions or guidance. In Carnity Off-Road Club, we use two-way UHF radios that are programmable to our frequency list that we have created. Make sure your radio is always fully charged for every drive, and if possible invest in having a second (spare) one. We can recommend the Crony/Motorola MT777 or the Baofeng UV5-R model as both are good radios with excellent price/quality ratio. You will find them in Dragon Mart. Do not buy a walkie talkie without a display, as these will be mostly pre-programmed and the frequencies cannot be changed unless you purchase programming software and cables. NOTE: THE BAOFENG 888 RADIOS THAT WE HAND OUT AS SPARE RADIOS WILL NOT WORK OUT OF THE BOX WHEN YOU BUY THEM AS THEY HAVE DIFFERENT FREQUENCIES. YOU CAN PROGRAM THEM BUT YOU WILL NEED PROGRAMMING CABLE, A LAPTOP, AND SOFTWARE CALLED CHIRP. IF YOU ARE NOT INTO THESE TECHNICAL THINGS, PLEASE STICK WITH BUYING THE CRONY/MOTOROLA MT777 or BAOFENG UV5R AS THESE CAN BE EASILY PROGRAMMED YOURSELF WITHOUT CABLES OR SOFTWARE. Instructions on how to program the Motorola/Crony and Baofeng you will find in below post: FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND MEDICAL KIT (NEWBIE AND ABOVE) Both items every vehicle should have, offroad or onroad. You will find DRY POWDER extinguishers at the petrol station or hardware shops, and a medical first aid kit at general hardware stores or pharmacies. Make sure they are immediately accessible in case urgently needed. 12V AIR COMPRESSOR (NEWBIE AND ABOVE) After every offroad drive you will need to re-inflate your tyres. If you are lucky to be nearby a petrol station you can slowly drive your way up there, but in many cases you will be miles away from one. You will find air compressors from 150 up to 2500AED as per your budget and liking, but if you are using it on a weekly basis you will find that sticking with a well-known brand like TJM, Bushranger, ARB really makes the difference. You can be lucky with the Camel branded compressors in Dragon Mart too, but do not expected any warranty on them. ACE, Speedex has the branded ones, and also a few cheaper options. GPS DEVICE (INTERMEDIATE AND ABOVE) From a dedicated GPS device such as the Garmin 276cx, or a smartphone with your favorite navigation app, it will be important from Intermediate level onwards that you start practicing navigation, putting waypoints, entry and exit points, and seeing the difference on your map between for example long range dunes and small technical dunes. Apps like MotionX for IOS, MyTrails, and GaiaGPS are very popular and allow you to properly prepare for your route / track beforehand. RECOVERY ROPE WITH 2 SOFT SHACKLES (INTERMEDIATE AND ABOVE) Recovering stuck vehicles in the desert is a skill, and from Intermediate level onwards you will be able to practice this. There are different types of ropes in the market, and finding the right one might be very confusing. - A Polyester Tow Rope is meant to tow a vehicle on the road, NEVER for off-road recovery. These are the basic tow ropes you will find at the petrol station. - A Webbing Sling is a Polyester rope that you can buy in hardware stores and is meant for industrial lifting, but can also be used as tow rope in specific cases (to re-direct a stuck vehicle with gentle tugs). This material does not stretch. - A Snatch rope (flat) or Kinetic Recovery Rope (round) is a rope made of Nylon that allows to stretch for about 20%, and is extremely useful for offroad recovery as the stretching creates a kinetic energy and the recoil effect helps in recovering vehicles stuck in the sand. When choosing a kinetic recovery rope, you should select a rope that has a breaking strength of 2-3 times the weight of the vehicle you will recover. For example; if you recover a Nissan Xterra which weighs 2 ton, the breaking strength of the rope should be at least 6 tons. Most recovery ropes have 10-15 Tons breaking strength. The reason for this is that the forces involved when a vehicle is completely stuck in the sand are far higher. Our club uses both the Viking Kinetic rope as well as the AOR Kinetic recovery rope with excellent results. The Viking rope costs about 350AED with a bag and 2 soft shackles included, while the AOR kinetic rope costs about 390AED without soft shackles. (AOR soft shackle cost 155 AED per piece). A shackle is a device that allows you to connect your rope to your tow point. These used to be mostly rated metal D-shackles, but nowadays the soft shackles, that were well known in the sailing world have become in offroading too. A soft shackle will be safer to use as the less metal involved the better during recoveries. More information on using these Kinetic recovery ropes and shackles can be found in below post: FLOOR JACK WITH WOODEN BOARD (ADVANCE AND ABOVE) A hydraulic floor jack in combination with a strong wooden board will allow you to safely lift a vehicle in the desert to replace a tyre or fix a pop-out. We do not advise using scissor jacks or bottle jacks, as these are only acceptable for on-road and will topple over in the sand or possibly even on a wooden board. A good hydraulic floor jack should be at least 2T capacity and a swivel neck (rotating handle) will allow you to put it further underneath the vehicle and still be able to lift it. JZX or YATO has good hydraulic jacks. Do not buy the cheapest one available as the consequences or risks when the floor jack collapses could be very serious. A strong wooden board should be at least 1 1/2 inches thick and made of natural wood and not MDF or plywood. A good example is scaffolding planks. It should be large enough to fit your hydraulic jack on it. TOOLKIT AND FLUIDS (ADVANCE OFF-ROADERS) A toolkit will come in handy for a multitude of reasons, in case a vehicle breaks down, to fix a loose exhaust, flag, or bumper, but can make you a hero if you are able to fix your vehicle instead of leaving it behind in the desert. Following items are recommended: A small basic multimeter, set of spanners up to size 24, some adjustable spanners, a hacksaw, hammer, set of screwdrivers, some electrical tape, duct tape, cable-ties, some spare car fuses, spare valves and stems, tie down straps, socket wrench set and some pliers. Also a tyre repair kit will be coming in handy, together with some thick gloves, and battery boost cables. Following fluids are recommended: - Engine oil: 1-2 liter - Coolant: 1-2 liter - ATF Transmission oil: 1 liter - A can of WD40 or penetrating oil - Spray-can with water to cool down an overheating engine.
