  1. Dear Desertnauts. The Ganthoot Blitz was tested, and executed for the first time time toward the end of last year, with the goal of re-discovering an almost virgin territory, with plenty of mixed terrain, and the potential to extend the drive toward the east, in the direction of Faqa. The area between Bab al Shams and Ganthoot is little travelled, and quite pristine due to its proximity with the AD border. From the Bab al Shams' side, its long range dunes are also further sheltered by an area of tight, technical dunes, which make the entry a little more complicated than simply driving north toward Al Qudra. Our goal will be to reach the heart of this area, with its playable long dunes, and drive south-west toward the AD border, zig-zagging between sabkhas, or side-sloping and criss-crossing the cordons of large, open dunes, until we'll have to loop back toward Solar Park, or perhaps, time and convoy permitting, extending the drive beyond the fenced military area that separates Ganthoot's outskirts from Little Sweihan to the south, and the Middle Earth, to the north. @Ahab Shamaa, @Archibald Jurdi, @GauravSoni, @Tero Vallas, @Ilya Golubinsky, @Gregory Perkin, @Junaid120120, @Mohamed Seidam, @MUHAMMAD Kashif RAZZAQ, @Ashok chaturvedi and @Foxtrot Oscar, welcome to the drive, and while waiting for it, enjoy your week.

  2. Every one here is young and as a matter of fact if I come across some one who claims being old I immediately tell him you should pay the desert a visit on the Carnity way 😍

  3. I am not sure if these features already exist or not on our website, but I thought it would be better if its there, If its there please let me know. A page listing all the drives the individual has gone through already and RSVP with filters on level, year, month, lead and showing only the trip report of the Individual. just a small suggestion.

  6. @Emmanuel I was trying to say that it was the correct amount of nervousness for me. In order for us newbies to get better, we need to be challenged. You perfectly accomplished that goal in my opinion, as parts of the drive took some (or all) of us out of comfort zone. If it is too easy, we will never get better. Wouldn’t change a thing.

  7. @Frederic, you are right, doubling the rope will only doubles its capacity, My bad, I didn't consider that the elongation/strech will also be split between the two half, thus no change in energy.. Thanks for clearing that out. It's good to have such discussions as missing one detail can completely change the outcome.

  8. A kinetic rope generally stretches about 20% over the total length, doubling up this rope will not make any difference nor will it give double kinetic energy. Try the trick with a small rubber band and you'll see that it makes zero difference.

  9. This is the most inexperience and most common way to NOT to do recovery. Stuck white wrangler seems front heavy (00:02) and doing recovery from back has added to the struggle. Crested vehicle on such height should not be attempted with tow rope recovery to risk getting two car stuck with a full tension rope. After getting 2 car stuck risking third car is even more unsafe approach. Third car tug was at super high speed with Viking rope (00:11), that could have snapped the tow points or break the rope, as viking ropes aren't designed for such high speed tugs. Alternative Recovery from the front side (if possible). Recover from the front or back with tow rope, ONLY if recovery vehicle can move closer to the stuck car freely after stopping half way, so that recovery vehicle can go back close to stuck vehicle after first softer tug (if needed). Use winch to be safer (if available). If not, the best way to recover is by creating a V-Channel with shovel, without risking any more car getting stuck. With two people making the channel, they could have unstuck wrangler in 5-10 minutes. Thankfully all Carnity trip leads and members who took Desert Recovery Champion course knows all this and much more practical and safer way to recover and self-recover cars.

  17. Dear soon to be Desertnauts. Welcome to Carnity! As you are aware of, this is a drive strictly for who has never been off road with Carnity. In preparation for it, it is important that you inform us if: you have any prior off-road experience; your vehicle has front and rear tow hooks / eyelets. Before joining the drive on Friday morning, you will need to have viewed the introductory videos (links above). Please also make sure you are equipped with you a tire deflator and a tire pressure gauge (sometimes they are all in one tool). You will need these. If you have an off-road flag as well that would he great. In case you do not have a flag mount on your car, you may look for a flag with suction cups, which can be easily placed on one of the rear windows. Even if the drive should end near a gas station, where they have an air compressor, if you have your own please bring it along, as it may be quicker than waiting in line. So, to recap, useful tools to carry would be: tire deflator tire pressure gauge off-road flag air compressor All these items should be available at any ACE or Speedex store, as well as at Dragon Mart. Regarding the area of the drive, we will access the desert from a less used entry point, along the road going from Qudra Parking (where you can use the ADNOC gas station to fill up your tank), toward the Bab al Shams Resort. Follow carefully the Google Maps directions: once you turn off the tarmac road (after circling a roundabout next to a mosque), you will cross an opening through roadworks being done along the bike track. Still following Google Maps' directions, you will go through an open fence, on a dirt track, for a few kilometers, until you'll reach the meeting and deflation point. I will also ask the other Senior member driving with the group to wait at the turn-off from the tarmac, just next to the bike track, and direct you in the proper direction. Once arrived at the meeting point, we'll conduct a final inspection of your cars (sufficient clearance and accessible tow points are a must, without which you'll be turned back). Following a detailed technical briefing, we'll be ready to enter the dunes, and start your off-roading adventure. This area is rarely used by other clubs, and the sand is much cleaner ad smoother, so this is an ideal ground to move your first steps in the desert. @RajaSekhar Kodali, @Kareem El Fouly, @Chris Wing, @Richard Franks, and any other enthusiast willing to join the Carnity family, please contact me on this thread for any preparatory question. In the meantime, have a great week.

  20. That is xxxxtreme !! And I lol about the 3m headphones!!! these pics makes me nostalgic about the 90’s and hot hatches ... I loved my Peugeot 306 (even though it was a diesel 🤣🤣) ... those were simpler days being a kid in Europe...

  21. That was 144 Decibels of pure addiction. Nothing compared to my friend who had 6 12” Subs built into a tiny Peugeot 205 and crossed the 150db regularly and won quite some prices. All driven by one Lanzar Mono block amplifier that went down to 1ohm (6 Subs all connected in parallel). Imagine standing at a stadium concert in front of one of the speakers, that’s the closest explanation I could give. We drove around with 3M headphones on 😅

  22. If you think off-roading is addictive, try installing your first Subwoofer and re-listen to all your old albums that you were suspecting to have a serious amount of bass. Soon you’ll be doing like I did and going for two 18” Rockford Subs with a few thousands of Watts, additional battery and capacitors, and spending your weekends meeting up with friends to swap Bass tune test tracks (I used to have these IASCA test CDs in which every track consisted of a different frequency: 1) 20 hz for 30 seconds 2) 21 hz for 30 seconds and so on 🤣

  23. 😂 what are you doing @Frederic ... a link to the sub is like dangling a chocolate covered carrot!!! 😳

  24. Well done @Niki Patel ! The rear speakers will have their limitations in terms of low end. They are made to play anything above 80Hz, so if you want to feel your bones rattle while playing your favorite Hiphop tunes 😁 you’ll be needing a subwoofer that can do its magic in the 25-80Hz range. A ported enclosure with a 10 or 12 inch sub does wonders, but all this stuff takes up some space of course (and money). https://www.ground-zero-audio.com/en/produkt/gzub-1000xactii/

  25. Stage 2 of my install complete! 🎉 I decided to stay with one family of product and have added a ground zero amp (and also changed the rear speakers at the same time) Amp: 4 way Ground Zero https://www.ground-zero-audio.com/en/produkt/gzta-4125x-b/ Rear : 2 way 4” Ground Zero (plus sound deadening) https://www.ground-zero-audio.com/en/produkt/gzrf-4-0sq/ The Amp is Being calibrated and sitting at a low gain whilst wearing in for 20-40 hours So far the addition of a decent rear 2 way has really filled the car. The amp has definitely brought an immediate improvement being able to power the speakers easily at lower volumes (thank you @Frederic for the encouragement) The low end is still disappointing however I suspect some further tuning and wearing in will help. The store is still adamant that my headunit is the limiting factor here! Doing incremental improvements has really made me appreciate every enhancement (similar to how you are advising we approach Offroad upgrades)! They attempted to replace the Mic however the 12.3” Chinese headunit has a proprietary mic harness vs a simple 3.5mm so I am currently stuck with the poor mic performance. Massive thanks to all that provided their guidance on this thread! I am looking forward to paying this forward!

  27. I don’t think a 265/65/18 will fit without wheel spacers and might rub against the inner fenders. You’ll need to test it. @Vanessa8580 has Yokohama 265/60/18 and these fit fine. Recalibration of odometer and speedometer: I don’t really see the benefit or need of doing that.

  29. You can use the following website to determine if you are changing more than 2%: https://tiresize.com/tyre-size-calculator/ As you can see in below example, the overall diameter in this case remains the same: So you can input the data of the tyres you have now, and see how much difference you'd get by changing rim and/or tyre type.

  31. @Ashok chaturvedi hope you remember how I recovered dead F150 by using broad strap as a bridle and attached viking rope through the bridle to my car. Reason for that is when F150 crossing the dune bridle strap will not go inside the dune easily and viking elasticity will keep pulling the car out as my car weight was quiet light to take full load of F150. Second advantage that I will have 3 meters (fixed) + 9 meter (elastic) distance of 12 meter giving F150 driver enough chance to brake with hard foot as vehicle was dead and braking in dead vehicle is always very tough. Third advantage to use bridle is to direct all the (limited) pulling power in center of F150 than pulling it from left or right shackle to increase the drag and resistance for my car.

  33. You mean strap by saying flat fixed rope? Three cars didn't get it? Is that like above video? It's a complete no - no to risk too many cars. Remember you free up your Pajero in recovery champion course in Maliha by creating a V-Channel, that's what is needed here. If you are referring to two cars simultaneously pulling one car uphill, then it depends on the situation: Use viking on both vehicles pulling if stuck vehicle is NOT buried in sand. Use strap if stuck vehicle is buried in sand till chassis and you cant clear the resistance by shoveling. Broad straps so they dont slice the dune like a round rope and waste all the pulling power. In such case you can both too. Strap on the curve of a dune and viking attach to recovery vehicle so you can give better and elastic pull yet without slicing the dune with your viking rope.

  35. Hello desert Wanderers Previously there was a discussion somewhere else in this nice and lovely forum of @Carnity about ropes . I just would like to get this straight . there are basically two kind of ropes and they serve different purpose the first is the snatch or tow rope and it’s stiff and very strong and it’s designed for lifting several tons like in construction or towing a vehicle , hence called tow rope the other type is recovery or kinetic rope and this is the one we use in sand and I say in sand not in wadi or gravel terrain and obviously it’s purpose not to tow but to recover utilising the stored kinetic energy being built during the stretch to recoil along the length of the rope and the rebound effect what brings the bogged vehicle out of the Sandy pit , bowl or pocket . The point is that we let this process to happen smoothly and gradual depending on difficulty of the situation . At times when we are bound of little space we tend to shorten the distance and shortening the length of the rope and I think this has nothing to do with increasing the power of strength as long as it’s one rope and not latterly two separate ropes. please let us know more , I might be wrong !

  40. As we have been respecting authorities guidance & Carnity COVID guidelines to resume desert drives with caution by keeping social distance and wearing mask at all times outside the vehicle Unfortunately few off-roaders have difficulty in understanding and abiding these guidelines. As published in the national newspaper of UAE, everyone need to understand that still there are no gatherings allowed and authorities are issuing fine for 10,000 AED for host and 5,000 AED for attendees. https://gulfnews.com/uae/health/people-caught-violating-covid-19-safety-instructions-prosecuted-1.1591381059748 If you spot anyone stepping out of the car not wearing a mask, please remind them on the radio immediately. As we all are in this together, so we all have to help each other to remind. Failing to abide below list of restriction will result in an immediate ban from Carnity Off-road Club: FIRST WARNING Minimum 1 month ban from joining any Carnity off-road Club drives. Written warning will be issued on your Carnity profile. SECOND WARNING Minimum 6 month ban from joining any Carnity off-road Club drives. Written warning will be issued on your Carnity profile. 41. With the tremendous increase in the number of COVID cases in the UAE, we all have to be responsible while off-roading. Failing to abide by any single precaution at any time during the drive, will result in an immediate ban from Carnity Off-road Club. ZERO TOLERANCE First offender - 1 Month Ban. Second offender - 3 Month Ban. Third offender - lifetime ban and report to authorities. COVID19 PRECAUTIONS 2.0 All Carnity off-road drives will be LIMITED to driving only: No Socializing and gathering allowed at any time. No break for taking photos, breakfast, smoking, etc. No exchanging of off-road or recovery gears. Wear a mask at all times, while outside your vehicle. For passengers restrictions, follow RTA or NCEMA guidelines. All passengers should be inside the car, at all times. Maintain a minimum of 2-meter social distance at all times. Sanitize your hands and recovery gear after use. PS1. If you and your passenger cannot sit inside your vehicle for 3-4 hours please DO NOT JOIN CARNITY DRIVES. PS2. A Member who has RSVP the drive is RESPONSIBLE and LIABLE for their passenger's compliance. PS3. The above precautions apply to everyone irrespective of their vaccination status or schedule. PS4. You can confidentially submit the photo of any offender by sending an email to [email protected]. How to comply Read the drive post before arriving at the meeting point, so that you know your convoy numbering and radio channel. Arrive at the meeting point and switch on your radio to the pre-set frequency of the drive. Stop your vehicle at least 10-20 meters away from each other. Deflate your tires, while wearing a mask, and then go back inside your car. All briefings will be done on the radio now, so pay full attention to a briefing for your own safety. After the briefing, fall in your convoy position just before the drive starts. While driving if you get stuck, announce on the radio and be inside your car at all times. Trip lead and/or support will guide you on the radio for self-recovery or tow-rope recovery. While there is a stuck or a refusal, everyone else supposed to be inside their car at all times. You can only take a bio-break during the drive, by requesting trip lead permission. Once the drive is over exit out to inflate by maintaining 10-20 meters distance from each other. While inflating, only the driver supposed to be out and with the face mask at all times. After the drive, you can talk on the radio for any feedback, suggestions or help you need.
