Water wading depth of 4x4 is not the good enough number to justify anyone's desire to splash the rain water puddle. Secondly water wading through wadi or river is totally different than through the big rain puddles, that has tons of contamination from road and debris. You really cannot see what's under that rain water and you might step on broken car part or a log of wood. Water entering the air intake is not the only danger to your vehicle. A vehicle's rated water wading depth takes into account electrical, mechanical and electronic components that might be damaged in a water crossing, as well as how well sealed the car cabin is from water intrusion. However, all these numbers are great when your car was brand new, but taking those water wading big numbers on 5-10-20 years of used vehicle is not a sensible idea. Every 4x4 manual has a list of things to check and change after the serious water wading. And yes @Per A I think your choice of 300-400 mm (at max) is plenty. Going beyond that you might need to check following things. All differential oil might get water through the breather pipe. Brake disc might get crack if they were too hot before entering the water. Airbag might pop as their sensors are usually placed under the bumper. If radiator fan hit the water it will splash everywhere in the engine bay. All electronics might fail if battery goes down while car is still moving. If you can't avoid driving during the heavy rain, take these precautions: Avoid heavily flooded roads. Slow down through rain puddles. Check with your insurance if flood damage is covered. Park your car on high ground as much as possible during the heavy rain. 4x4 and SUV are better than sedan or sports car, as their air filter intake is fairly down. If more than 1 cup of water goes inside the engine through air intake it can instantly seize your car engine due to hydrostatic lock. A Hydrostatic Lock is basically a condition when the engine of your vehicle gets locked due to water seeping in. This results in your car not starting or stalling when you are moving. A hydrostatic lock happens when your vehicle is moving through a flooded area or is parked in any area prone to floods. What to do with flooded cars?

Looking forward to this one. Last few days in Dubai reminded me of being back home .... lots of water with no idea how deep or what's waiting beneath. Been quite scary seeing the speed people have been ploughing into the puddles (and wondering why someone driving a Ferrarri thinks it has the ground clearance to get through knee high water). Will be happy to be back on dry land/sand.

What wading depth do you have on your cars and do you risk it going through them? The manual of my pajero says 700mm (27Inches) but i would not try that, after about 300-400mm go scardycat and drive around....

How do fuel prices compare in your home country versus UAE? I am North Ireland Current UAE price is Petrol 2.12 per litre Diesel 2.38 per litre This is an average. Sources may vary In my place we are paying £1.24 per litre (5.95 AED) for petrol. Diesel is £1.30 (6.23) We are taxed twice in our fuel. First they add 60% fuel tax, then they add 20% VAT. People ask why Europeans love small engine cars?

I bought the Disco for AED 7500. Had to change the engine for about AED 4500 and gear for AED 900 besides having to change the engine and gear mounts for about AED 250 a couple of times and replaced all the seals twice before giving up on all the leaks. Besides that had to change the fuel tank once and fuel pump. Overall over 5 years I had it I spent about AED 15 k and got back only AED 4500 when I sold it. So cost me over 10500 over a 5 year ownership. Compared to the Civic where I spent AED 23075 and sold for 15k so cost me AED 8075 over 5 years. I bought the Pathy for AED 10k spent AED 4k recently for engine, gear is already a question mark now which should cost me another AED 2k and other bushing and stuff where I've spent over AED 8k including AC rebuild cost. So already way over AED 20k spent and haven't tried selling it yet. But I doubt I'll be able to sell it anywhere close to AED 20k to beat the Civic of the old.

For some reasons I never liked Saab. Their styling puts me off. Almost means I went, had a look, drove it, but since this was going to be my first car and that too with my own money I hesitated in doing the deal which turned out to be good thing as I found a much better civic shortly afterwards

The cheapest ride i have owned till date is the truck i currently own - my dearly beloved Xterra which i picked up last year for about 25k. All purchases prior to that (pajero SWB 2002, Pajero LWB 2009, VW tiguan 2011) were more in comparison.

Hi, I am new to this club // might be very obvious haha.. Would it be okay to join in with an Range Rover Sports ? I believe, i need to purchase some extra accessories? - Engine serviced // no check lights - suspension all ok - gotta check tow points - no previous experience of off-roading while being in driving seat - willing to learn but not sure my ride is the one that should be used for beginners level. - tires are low profile // not special off road tires. but new. Any guidance would be lot appreciated.

I kept my Benz in garage away from rain and went out with my cheap Jeep and enjoy making big waves and splashing water till my roof.

I caught the massive brunt of it just after picking up tea and samosas from License Restaurant in Aweer. Visibility almost went down to 5 and the rain drops felt like hailstones for a second there I thought I was going to lose my windscreen. No pics or video though unfortunately.

My first car was my cheapest. Honda Civic 1991 DX. Bought it in 1994 at AED23000, besides normal wear and tear like brakes and oil and filter change, just had to replace the fuel pump. This costed me AED 75 as I did it myself, just had to buy the part. After 4 years sold it at AED 15000 which I think was a fair deal.

For 2020 I plan to try and keep my job so that I can keep my Pathy, however might have to look into my gear rebuild at some point. This will not be a mod and no options for me, just waiting for it to give up on me completely.

If being given a car counts, I was given my first ever car - a Triumph Dolomite. I bought a Renault 5 TL for UKP25, which ran perfectly without any maintenance for 6 months until a passing lorry somewhat too close decided to treat the front wing as if it was a can opener. The cost of the new wing was more than it was worth to repair.

Let's see who has the most adventurous car plan (change, upgrade, mod, rebuild etc) in 2020? I have just finished my engine rebuild and currently doing first 1K break-in at the start of the new year. Hope everything goes downhill from here on, as I have been through rough patch since last few months - car luck = no luck/bad luck.

I am from Karachi Pakistan. Current UAE price is Petrol 2.12 per litre Diesel 2.38 per litre This is an average. Sources may vary In my place we are paying PKR 117 per litre (2.75 AED) for petrol. Diesel is PKR 125 (2.80) per litre. The premium petrol in Karachi is Octane 93 and not Octane 95 like UAE.

@Srikumar, thanks for the detailed info. This is second car in my household, I have another one... I bought it like 2 months ago & thinking to give it a try on the beginner level... Just to share, its 2009 UK Specs. Sounds cool, the pros can help to double the low gearing & sand mode on spot .. for the max suspension height & tow hook, ill check those myself by tomorrow & revert back ... thank you !

Hi @Obaid.Sultan.1987 Welcome to Carnity Off-road Club. To answer your query Range Rover Sports is not an ideal off-roader, unlike Range Rover Vogue due to low hanging bumper and low profile oversize tires. RR Sports is more aimed for on-road performance rather than for off-road.. But being a Range Rover they are borderline acceptable for newbie level drives. If this car is too special or precious for you, I wouldn't advise you to take a chance due to its low clearance and thin tires. If this is the second or third car in your household and you guys are done with its on-road use and wish to test its off-road character, then you can join the drive. We will still double-check everything before the drive like low gearing, sand mode response, max suspension height, tow hook etc.

Don't hold your breath as it could take a very long time. Until then enjoy driving a manual automatic! Lol

What car things have you done that you never want to do again? For me it has to be buying rusty cars. The worst part about restoring a car is patching rust. It never looks bad but once you start poking at it, you end up replacing so many panels that it isnt even the original car any more. Far easier to just start with a good base.

Has to be my V6 Ford Cortina XR6. Bought it new for 7 300 ZAR in 1981, and sold it for 12 000 ZAR in 2005, with less than 60 000km on the clock. Only major repairs were a new starter, an alternator- and several sets of wiper blades. Never even changed the brake pads/shoes. Its fuel consumption was terrible though- hence the low mileage.

I never trust any mechanic, car dealer, service advisers, workshop, parts seller again. Because I have been fooled, cheated and badly treated with all those people as soon as I develop 1% of trust. It become my nature now to do a thorough research for any car job, so that I know it's not gonna backfire and ruin thousands later. Spending 30 minutes in research or fact finding is better than wasting days with dishonest / non-technical people plus the extent of damage they can cause is immeasurable.

1999 Grand Cherokee for 6000. It is amazing for a 6000AED beater Jeep. I only needed to work on transmission and fixing some leaks. I put 18.000km on it from May till today.

Does free count? I got a Mk2 Vauxhall Cavalier for free once. The boot and some doors were welded on to stop them from falling off. Had some fun with it until it put a piston through the side of the block. Also got a free Vauxhall Chevette Got a free Renault Laguna too Had a few other free cars. The cheapest one I paid for was a Lada Riva for £20 (100 dhs). Bought loads of cars for under £100 (500 dhs). There are plenty of cheap cars out there that people have given up on that you can get working again in a few hours with some tools and a bit of know how
