front diff grinding sound can be caused by half-locked solenoid... so he's onto something. Nonetheless the leak is also something to address (and fast) regardless of the root cause of the problem there...

I was thinking the same about the half-locked solenoid or actuator, but in that case it would keep showing the blinking 4x4 lights on the dash i presume ?

Another thing that's bugging me is that in 2H the freewheeling clutch disconnects the front drive shaft, so the diff should not be rotating or causing noises in 2H, or am i also wrong here and there is still some kind of connection on one wheel ?

Before the floods, and during Eid, I was out for a ride and got stuck in some really slow stop/start traffic for about 20 minutes. This was late in the evening when the weather was a bit cooler. For the first time ever the coolant temperature on my dash spiked to max and the check engine light came on (which I've now read to be P1217 - engine over temperature). This is the first time it's happened in my <1 year of ownership; it normally sits dead on the 'min' line.

I shut it off and waited an hour or so to cool down before topping it up with I think 6 litres of water before driving it home with no further issues. When I got home I topped everything up to the max again - the radiator and the two supplementary tanks next to each wing - and it was probably another four litres, which is an alarming amount of coolant. So far I've not seen any leaks whilst the car has been parked; it's bone dry.

I last had the car serviced about six months ago which was its first service during my ownership. I hope they checked/topped up the coolant, but I guess there's every possibility they didn't and I'd been running low since purchasing the car. When I bought the car I did a PPI on it and there was no mention of coolant leaks/coolant being low, but again I don't remember explicitly seeing that it was checked so there's every possibility it was overlooked again.

All my local garages are currently full of flooded cars but I of course have to take it in somewhere to be pressure checked, etc. In the meantime does anyone have any suggestions on what I proactively might be able to check? Could I have an improperly sealing radiator cap for instance? Visually everything looks fine but maybe I have a leak that's causing evaporation under high pressure.

Hi @londondxb the fact you had to add about 6litres is indeed a sign you were basically running without any coolant.

Using water to refill can be done in emergency cases, but you will need to get it flushed and replaced with coolant asap. Water will cause corrosion inside the cooling circuit, while coolant has corrosion inhibitor inside, and also has a higher boiling point).

Another thing to consider is you might have some air bubbles inside the system now which have to be released. In any case i would highly advise to take the car for coolant flushing and replacement (even a nearby Autopro or something can do this).

They can also do a basic inspection on leaks. I do hope if you are consuming water somewhere and you don't seem to see where it's going, it might be being burned by the engine which would mean a faulty head gasket. But then again you'd have to see some white smoke coming out of the exhaust.

@Frederic  @RiadJL Team Thanks for the drive today , it was nice one , my daughter really enjoyed it , especially when the camel march came in 😄😄😄😄but unfortunately one passenger got sick, sorry that the trip ended because end us, but the decision to exit was the right one. She’s sleeping and fine now, thank you all.

look forward for one more scenic drive to come in again

I hope she feels better now. It was indeed the best to exit and we had a great morning out with a very nice convoy and got to see some nice "scenic" view :)

  5. Good morning All !

Thanks for joining this drive. As mentioned in the drive post, the aim of this drive is to do a gentle exploration of the entire outskirts of Qudra. It's the perfect drive to take the camera and family along, and to enjoy a sit-down to socialize.

Please do make sure to bring your off-road gears as per your level, and of course your trusty walkie talkie.

We will be using Channel 4: 446.081Mhz

Take note that this drive will last a bit longer than our usual drives. I hope we can reach our destination (flamingo lakes) by 1pm.

    See you all tomorow !

I've had the UV-5R and the static was horrendous even with squelch at lvl. 9. After that, I bought the UV-9R and it's significantly better. I don't believe it to be faulty hardware, just software.
You'll be happy to have spent that extra 20AED when you are cruising in the desert, listening to the wind. With the UV-5R all that I was hearing was: "...bzzzzzzzzz...bzz...bzzzz...bzzzzzzzzzzzzz".

Try the little software hack. It has turned my UV5R into a very quiet radio 😆

Hello, I have same problem on my Pajero 2012. This happened after I had maintenance work (differential oil changed, rear bushing, front joint/arms). After I drive for like 20 km, center orange light starts blinking, green lights off. A car restart will fix it. Happened twice so far. Is it dangerous to drive on this condition?

    Thanks.

Pretty sure during the maintenance one of the vacuum hoses came loose. It's not harmful to drive like that but fuel consumption will be slightly more as it's not completely in freewheel 2WD now.

Better to get the solenoid and actuator checked and/or replaced.

On the hunt for a new radio, the 4 year old mechanic in our house got hold of my UV-5R and now its UV-Nothing... Anyway, any recommendation on the UV-9R which claims to have a better range?

    - is it worth the extra 20aed? - got quoted 120aed for the 9R vs 100aed for the 5R at DM of course.

Better range I don’t really believe, and would potentially only benefit the listener 😅

UV5R was known for lots of static, there’s a small software hack that solves this, I can send you more info if you need. I think the UV9R won’t be having this issue.

is the Xterra steering rack rebuilding a good solution? i did a PPI on a potential buy and it shows steering rack leak and in need of repair

    image.png.6cce13cbb0dcc4e5525ab2d7a7289dd2.png

any idea if i can fix this for a decent amount?

Steering rack rebuilt is indeed common. I remember getting it done for our Xterra and ended up around 800dhs. Depending on the type of shop and location this price will vary.

  10. Drive Theme

Another famous Scenic drive, where the focus is more on enjoying the terrain than on bashing any dunes. We will be covering a big portion of the Marmoom Conservation Reserve, trying to spot Oryx, gazelles, and take regular breaks for socializing and taking photos. Bring your camera, snacks, and chairs!

Starting from the border with Abu Dhabi in the South-West corner, we will make our way East towards the E66 (Faqa area). From there we will head north and top off the drive with a gentle drive through the famous Qudra Lakes.

  11. All Terrain tires like the G015 are definitely worth it for the following reasons:

    1) Allows for lower deflation vs a HT tire.

    2) Stronger sidewall. Sand is soft and forgiving but often we come across some barbed wire or pieces of rock on sabkhas. This is where your HT tire would potentially fail prematurely.

    3) knobby AT tire profile will provide better traction during self recovery.

During driving in the desert your HT tires are indeed a good option, moving to AT tires will definitely be an improvement with stronger sidewall, and better grip when doing self recovery.

    Hello Everyone,

I was looking at my OBD2 Port and saw this connector, but I had no idea what it is!  Does anyone have an idea what it could be? I tried to follow the wire, but it went behind the panel

    Thank you in advance

Looks like previous owner had an aftermarket device installed like scan gauge, bullydog, or other. Upon selling the car he probably removed the device but left the cable.

  13. Hi @SamyB, we can't give any specific names here (as promoting shops is not allowed on the forum). But the Nissan Patrol is a very easy 4x4 to work on or diagnose, so i would try sticking to any decent mechanic.

If it comes to performance upgrades, there are plenty in Al Quoz, Ras Al Hor, and Sharjah that specialize in turning the Patrol into a performance monster :) .

    Hello Frederic,

    It's a Y62.

Ok. Power wise please don’t compare with a Golf GTI 😜. This is a 2500kg boat. Having said that, the Patrol is plenty capable to get you everywhere in the deser but it has a few design flaws. The bumpers are really low and soon you’ll be seeing them coming off during your desert drive. Most of the Y62 members here trim the bumpers to gain extra clearance and avoid them getting completely ripped off.
Apart from that, join us in a Newbie drive and we’ll teach you to unleash the Patrol power 😜
