Post Drive Thoughts I think that today was my 70th Carnity drive lead and in some ways the development of the club to what it is now is reflected in the way that I feel after what was a great drive by everyone that came along. From @Werno as an excellent 2nd lead to @Ale Vallecchi in sweep, this was a convoy that showed maturity, developing skills and determination. Carnity has been a bit like that. The club has matured from a small intimate club to the 800+ membership we value. We are developing driver and leader skills in a process that was unimaginable 70 drives ago and we have a crop of drivers determined to push themselves on drives to improve their capabilities and enjoy what the Carnity experience provides them. I have had the pleasure, due to my quite large number of drives of seeing the development of pretty much all the drivers on the convoy today. I can still remember when @Looper was Gautam! I've watched @Humayun Ghias go from literally sideways in his car to the excellent controlled drive today. @Sunil Mathew I saw you as an absolute newbie and newbie and now your my 2nd lead on drives. @Chinthaka Ruwanit took until an early fewbie plus drive until we finally drove together. @Alain Canivet-Abikhalil came on a Masterclass and has been demonstrating incredible class ever since. Apparently I shouted at @Hisham Masaad on his Absolute Newbie. @darren thompson you're almost a regular on my drives now. @PaoloMaraziti I've seen you grow and become more and more adventurous. And @Zixuan Huang - Charlie you have the accolade of being the only driver on this convoy with whom I never drove before (as far as I can remember). My point is that there's nothing more rewarding than seeing what an incredible breed of drivers we are helping to develop in the club. Marshals like @Ale Vallecchi who is very often seen coaching drivers to develop their skills and all the other crew, marshals and experts give up their free time because we see the joy that this hobby brings and the added value that our drivers gain. I enjoyed this drive because all these values shone through. Perfect convoy discipline, great team work, accepting that we don't get is right all the time and most of all, an incredible impressive performance from the whole convoy through the technical sections. 69 drives ago, it too me 6 hours to get through that technical section in Lisaili - today it took 20 minutes. That just about says it all. See you soon in the sand.

I always loved your briefings (specially the old version) @Wrangeld and all your detailed trip reports.. but I love this one the most as it summed what @Carnity is all about.. it’s not about off-roading, adrenaline rush, escaping stress, etc.. it’s about humans, relationships, standing by and grooming each other and leadership which you put beautifully in this amazing story of @Carnity

Great drive @Wrangeld, all “technical” promises delivered as per pre-drive posts and briefings 😀! Yes, looking back at the period from my absolute newbie drive with you, up until today, it has been a very satisfying journey with @Carnity and the amazing leads and marshals .. I still remember the ABN drive where at the very first small side slope , when my car tilted to 45 deg, I totally blanked out and just went over the dune instead of taking a curve and coming down. I could hear the concerned voice of @Shamil on the radio asking me whether I was OK 😅. Btw..not seeing much of Shamil these days Thanks to @Ale Vallecchifor the sweep support, another marshal who has had a pivotal role in shaping up my off-road journey , with Carnity…indebted!! and @Hisham Masaad our Mr. Q springing into action with his heavily gadgetised FJ, and winching out @Wrangeld from a tight spot. Good to drive with all familiar faces @Zixuan Huang - Charlie following me, hope I did not make life difficult for you, me following 3 SWB cars , the lines in front of me were pretty deceiving 😀 @Chinthaka Ruwan on his way to IM shortly, @Alain Canivet-Abikhalilalso following suit… @Humayun Ghias thanks for the help in airing up, …I have one of the slowest compressors in town 😀 @PaoloMaraziti, @Looper @darren thompson we meet again. the new faces for me were @Werno our 2L and @Pancho who I understand was an active part of Carnity some time back, I remember seeing a drive posted as a sent off to him, while rummaging through the records on the forum… hope to see you both also soon in future drives… looking forward and coming back for more!!!

A big thanks to @Lorenzo Candelpergher for hosting and leading us all during the drive, kudos to @Arman as 2nd lead and @GauravSoni for supporting and keeping the convoy moving from his sweep position. Also a pleasure to meet and drive with all of you @PaoloMaraziti, @Hasan Wahlan, @Farouq Owdeh, @Mus_hus78, @Ruan van den Heever, and @Xavier Treasurer. @PaoloMaraziti, it was an unfortunate situation the pop-out and tyre wall rupture, hope to see you soon in the sand! This was one of the drives with highest adrenaline rush I've been to. It also was my first visit to Sweihan and what a great area it is! it required me to be alert and focused whilst taking those bowls, steep slopes and not to mention the maneuvers to criss-cross certain points. We also managed to sustain continuous driving for long periods, which kept us all concentrated and with the right momentum to take up those challenges @Lorenzo Candelpergher was throwing at us. There were a few refusals and pop-outs, all were dealt safely and diligently, either with help of other members (the morning shoveling workout! 😅) or through self-recovery. As an experiment, this time I drove in 4L/tiptronic and deflated tires down to 9 PSI, the hypothesis was to try improve climbing capability and also maintain a lower engine coolant temperature. The engine coolant temperature reached 105C at its highest point, compared to 110C / 113C observed in a previous drives, notably in Dubai's Area 53, whilst driving in 4H. My perception was that, in spite of the soft and churned sand in some areas, the climbing performance was slightly better than driving in 4H, however driving 4L compromises speed and, as I am no car expert, don't know what impact it might have in the mechanics of the car (short, mid or long term). In terms of fuel consumption: by the time it was announced we were exiting the fuel gauge was about to reach half tank (capacity is 95L), I reached inflation point exactly with half tank, I also had to stop a few seconds on the way back to engage 4H as we were already on the dirt track. With two drives in one day - both with @Gaurav - on two ends of town, this trip report needed some sleep before it could be hashed out. @Gaurav - from riding the Iftar Bowl in the AM to sidesloping long dunes in Qudra, thank you for a fun weekend. The pace in last night's drive was excellent. With a total drive time of 3.5 hours with just 50minutes of stoppages dealing with minor stucks, we had lovely pace and rhythm which travelled through the length of the convoy. @Ahmed Wagdy - being SL requires so much attention. And at night that becomes even more challenging. From all the radio comms of acknowledgements, you played this role with perfection. @Yousef Alimadadi - this was my first convoy with you and I think I heard you said that you're back after two months. No rust there at all Thank you for always being there at the sight of the refusals & stucks with your input and guidance. Also, I caught all the lights bouncing off your Pajero - that two-tone paint scheme is stunning! @Santoso Marjuki - for your first night drive, this was a great drive. On my first night newbie drive, I was constantly afraid and worried about what was on the other side. You have a beautiful Rubi in what my passenger and I talked about - a shimmering blue. Refusals and stucks are part of the offroading experience. You'll get more comfortable with night driving the more you come out. And we'll see your Rubi make magic on the dunes To the second half of the convoy, thank you for the pace! I had an amazing time following you gents. @Daniel Yang - always a pleasure to see you on a night drive with your Y62. Can't wait to meet the Y61 though!! From how you've described it, It's going to be epic. Great drive@Arshad Roojee! Following you, I had to adjust my line a few times because your "topless" SWB just rides slopes with such ease. Lastly, a great pleasure to finally meet you @Islam Soliman. Having you in sweep giving me all that additional light was a godsend. I hope to be in a drive you lead soon. I didn't catch much of that Denali action in the night Thank you all for a beautiful night drive. And see you all out on the sands - and maybe that "yoga center" soon 😛

Drive Report: Great to see all members signed up arriving ahead of time, deflating and prepping ready to go . We had a quick briefing, very interactive one and off we headed into an area - Area 53 which is generally explored by more experienced members. I had the blessing of some excellent support by @Veedooshee (2nd lead to perfection), @Alex Raptor, @M.Seidam and @marks who were fantastic in advising and assisting the refusals and a pop out fixed in record time. Always great to catch up with few of them whom I met after a really long time. Thank you for your support friends!🙏 We at Carnity never encourage any businesses or garages , and especially on drives at the meeting, during the drive or exit points. Please bear in mind that at public places when someone approaches you for this, take it with caution as it is beyond my or support members control at times to avoid this. We had a slow start into some areas which warmed you all up, probably a bit too much for your car @YazGayed. Really sad to see that leak from your radiator , due to which you had to exit early. Till then you drove and did some wonderful self recoveries. We would like to see you back on sands soon. @MANOJ NAIR recovered his Pajero from a tricky side stuck situation beautifully under the able guidance of @M.SeidamOnce back with the convoy after exit, we explored heading towards the bigger dunes and bowls to get a feel of what was about to come as you progress in your drive levels. We had more refusals there and at one point @Alex Raptor presence of mind to hold back the convoy immediately was fantastic as I had to loop back coming down from a soft churned up dune . After @Veedooshee cleared these , the 3rd @Joji varghese and 4th @eldose babyhad refusals there . Great to see you both recovering well from that soft patches by some quick steering maneuvers and gear changes . @Joji varghese you bought back memories of another friend @Jolly Abraham who drives a 4 cylinder 2.7 Fortuner beautifully. We all did some practice in a small , not so steep bowl to get a feel of what you will be doing more often in future . Keeping the pace and using the momentum is the key. The three patrols (Y62 monsters) stacked up showed hardly any issues , wonderful to see how you all managed so well @salah2u, @Hilal Sharafudeen and @Mohamad Anwer. @Rsjiv Samuel, @Alfred Alinazar and @Senthil Kumar driving at the back managed well considering the fact they were on churned up sands. @marks ably guided cars in front of him who needed some assistance in self recovery. All the situations - softer sand, bowls , refusals, stucks , self recoveries, size of dunes , bowls and everything we did on this drive increase tremendously in proportions , effort, concentration needed and the intensity for you and your car as you progress through the levels ahead of Newbie for more adventures and thrilling drives with Carnity. We encourage you all to enjoy the journey learning slowly , improvising and progressing in your levels. This is a hobby and we all want you to learn it in the safest possible manner. Thank you @Wrangeldfor such a nice drive and captivating drive report. I have come a long way since my early days and I learn new things on each drive. I still go sideways sometimes haha This was reminded to me by the calm yet assertive feedback today from @Ale VallecchiwhenVallecchi when I was countersteering. Am I correct to observe that we need a higher speed on a slope especially for heavier y62s in order not to side slip? Today was my tenth Fewbie plus and I look forward to my intermediate promotion. Thank you @Hisham Masaadfor all your help and thank you to the rest of the convoy. Some people I met for the first time.

Thanks a lot @Gaurav, @Islam Soliman@Yousef Alimadadi for making my first night ride a very enjoyable and pleasant one, i thought i would be stressing out given the new experience, yet i enjoyed every minute of it, looking for more night drives now. For everyone in the convoy, it has been great riding with you, guess we were just blessed to have the right collection of drivers constructing the convoy, in alignment to the sighting of the shooting star by @Gaurav and @Islam Soliman at the beginning made this a very smooth ride 😀

That shout @Wrangeld was the reason for getting crested since then 😅😅 many thanks for that. Wonderful drive today, technical but felt easy with the performance of all. DRIVE REPORT Dear Desert Wanderers, Sweihan is one of those places where, even after driving for four consecutive hours, one would never stop.. And today's drive was no different! The meeting point was quite crowded this morning, with two other convoys gathering there as well. With that confusion, we were able to make our move to the sand by 5:45am, a bit later than planned. We warmed up on the nearby tall dunes in the twilight before the sunrise, roaming around for the first few minutes. We then started what was then meant to become the leitmotiv of the day, i.e. climbing as high as was reasonably possible, driving around as many bowls as we could find and throwing in, here and there, a bit of more peppered stuff, with some daring criss-crossing or complex passages as a proper Fewbie Plus drive demands. One one side the Dubai lot of @Carnitymembers and in particular @GauravSoni, @Arman and @Mario Cornejo, who are familiar with my spaghetti-climbing drive style in Intermediate Drives at Area 53 in Sharjah, probably today felt we were doing the same on steroids as far as the terrain was concerned, which was totally new for @Mario Cornejo and @PaoloMaraziti. On the other hand, the Abu Dhabi lot of @Carnity members got the opportunity to drive once again in a well known area but under a new lead, experimenting a different driving style. After just 25 mins in the drive, when, warmed up and with full daylight, we started a sequence of sustained slideslopes, @PaoloMaraziti had a very unfortunate pop-out on his rear right wheel, probably due to an excessive fishtailing on a right-curved long dune. Having a rear pop-out is fairly rare, but I guess it was the first time that @PaoloMaraziti faced such high dunes and a moment of hesitation caused a nasty wrapping of the tire, with a double cut on the inner side wall. After replacing the tire with the spare one, it was a wise decision by our unfortunate friend to bail out, certainly not an easy one given the efforts made to be there (PCR, drive from Dubai, early wake-up) and the amazing terrain we were in. After leading @PaoloMaraziti to the dirt track, we headed back in, fiercely climbing every dune and riding every bowl we could see around. As we proceeded east, the convoy got progressively accostumed with the pace and I felt comfortable to spice up the level with a few all-but-trivial criss-crossings, where we had a few refusals and reattempts but only three real stucks during the entire drive, two sorted out by self-recoveries by @Farouq Owdeh and @Xavier Treasurer after some team shoveling and one requiring a quick winching from a nasty crest for @Hasan Wahlan The drive was fluid, intense and high paced, which was particularly appreciated by @Ruan van den Heever and @Mus_hus78, apparently. This was possible thanks to a great convoy where every driver chewed as a pro whatever I would throw under his wheels, even at the back where the sand was constantly churned up.. Everyone did extremely well today. @Arman was an excellent 2nd lead, promptly rerouting when I asked some adjustments to my lines. Apparently he ended the drive with very low fuel.. We certainly pushed our throttles today! @PaoloMaraziti was really unlucky today. I'm glad he took the whole thing with a positive spirit and, most importantly, that, even after just 25min drive, he fell in love with Sweihan. @Hasan Wahlan certainly didn't spare his Landcruser, always pushing it as high as possible at every climb, which caused some overheating issues here and there, all well managed, though. @Farouq Owdeh's roaring engine had every chance to play its "music" throughout the drive. Impressive how his tire marks were very often the highest ones on the high climbs. @Mario Cornejo, excellent Center Forward, for sure enjoyed every minute of today's drive, discovering Sweihan dune after dune, apparently driving most of the drive in 4LO. Curious to know how was his fuel consumption. @Mus_hus78 certainly squeezed every bit of power from his Pajero today, climbing aggressively every slope and driving around every bowl. I am afraid the front bumper didn't enjoy the drive as much as the driver, but I hope it can be easily fixed. A moment of distraction costed @Ruan van den Heever his first pop-out ever, again a rear tire, but it was fixed in no-time and we were on the move in less than 10 mins. Other than that, an impeccable drive in churned up sand. @Xavier Treasurer didn't disclose until the end of the drive that he was having overheating issues to the extent that he drove most of the time with the heating on to help cooling down the engine. This costed him some power, which combined with the soft and churned sand at the back made his life all but easy. Even more deserved, therefore, a big kudos for a great ride at the far end of the convoy. Closing the convoy with sweeping elegance was @GauravSoni, a certainty at the back and great support with @Mario Cornejo in the few stucks / pop-outs of the day. Overall we drove for 4h 5', covering 82.9km of distance, even if the last 15km were on dirt track to facilitate an easier exit given the fuel consumption concerns of a couple of drivers (who was saying his fuel gauge isn't working?). Our average moving speed was 28.7km/h, but recalculated excluding the last fast stint on tracks, it was in fact 23.6km/h. We were in motion for 3h 5' with 58' of idle time. The total ascent exceeded 1600m. A great drive, a bit special for me as it was my 70th drive with @Carnity and 30th as a lead. Even more special considering that I was in Sweihan the 1st time just 11 months ago in an Intermediate Drive. Thanks to everyone for the fantastic company, congrats for the great performance. I hope everyone enjoyed as much as I did. Looking forward to the next one!

I've got a friend in a jeep club I'm in that exclusively drives in 4L (except he's got a manual), he's been doing it for years now and has had no issues but believes that some of that may be due to the manual gear box as he seldom shifts below 3rd gear when in 4L ( lower gears in TJ are geared super low and you'd have to shift very early in 4L). You lose top speed in 4L because you're doing a severe gear reduction (in a tj it's something like 11:1) so you're getting 11x more torque for 11x less speed approximately...... (correction to this number here, in first gear and 4L the Auto TJs are geared 6:1 and the Manuals are geared 10:1) I may try this with my TJ on an upcoming climb focused drive, not sure how she'll deal with speed though as the 4 speed auto gearbox is limited at the top end.

Hi we had an awesome drive in the absolute newbie and both Our Marshal and Mehmet were helpful, provided good knowledge and also had the patience. I specially enjoy the Mother Nature in its true form and loved the Dunes. It was like a dream of myself driving in the dunes. Understood the capability of machine Pajero abs happy to have bought it. thank you Carnity for this wonderful experience. Looking forward for many more such rides.

Hi @Anish S thanks for your understanding and support today! I was loving the drive and normally my wife would be more the capable sitting as passenger but she just couldn’t shake feeling sick. I was trying to go slower but with those kind of dunes the momentum counts ! Thanks to everyone else for their patience, I hope you all had a great drive ! will be back out next weekend! best

Luckily it was not, job was completed during the week in time for my drive in Sweihan, and am glad to report that there was no Patrol No 5 this time 🤣
