Trip Report:
Thanks to everyone for being on time, we were able finish the briefing and head out by 7:15. With no fog and beautiful weather we headed out into a bit of technical dunes for about 90 minutes to make sure everyone was wide awake. We did have a few stucks and refusals that were sorted quickly by @Kailas and @Rizwanm2. Once I was sure everyone was awake, we headed into the long range dunes and for an hour practised some nice long ridge rides and criss crossing with a few sideys where everyone did really well. For the last hour, we went towards the bowls and did a few loops at a little higher speed with some more criss crossing and sideys.
@Rizwanm2 thank you for being an excellent 2nd lead. You maintained the perfect distance for a 2nd lead giving me enough time to tell you when to reroute. Had not driven with you in a while and can see you have really grown in confidence. Well done.
@varunmehndiratta when we started the drive, I noticed you were a bit shy on the gas over the smaller technical dunes. The small technical ones can be deceiving, at first glance you may think that you dont need to much gas to get over it but the minute your wheels touch it, you instantly feel it hold you back resulting in a refusal or stuck. I was happy though to see over the course of the drive, you kept getting better at it.
@N@ved, driven with you on 1 newbie and 1 fewbie drive and have been really impressed with the way you handle the TJ. Whether it was a small technical dune or a higher sidey / climb, you were spot on with the amount of gas you gave it and never really saw you struggle. Well done.
@VipinShetty, well driven and really happy to see you enjoying the JGC. You managed very well and had absolutely no issues.
@topgear, Big improvement from the last time we drove together. I remember on our last drive you were struggling to find that sweet spot with the amount of gas to give it in various situations but you had it under control throughout this drive. Well done and hope the loops didn't make your son feel to sick.
@Karthik Krishnakumar, you have a very capable vehicle so dont be shy to step on the gas when required and always stick to the track of the car in front of you. Overall you did quite well and I am sure you will fine tune the rest over the next few drives.
@Kailas, Well done buddy. Thank you for the excellent support and keeping the convoy moving safely. Really happy to see you growing and taking on more responsibility with the drives.

Thank you @Brette. Should I pull F76 as well or not required?
Upto fewbie level just pull the air bag fuse. The traction and ESP from fewbie + onwards.

Hi @Alex Sidorov just before the drive starts, you remove the fuse and put it back once done with the drive. The large yellow fuse just lifts up but stays in the slot, it will not come out, just lift it up fully and after the drive push it back down.
When you do this, the annoying beep will start once you begin driving but will cut off after 1 minute or when you touch 20kmph.
Just remember 3 things before the drive, deflate, put up your flag and remove fuse. After the drive, inflate, remove flag and put fuse back.
1st pic is the fuse in place, 2nd pic it is out.

@Alex Sidorov it should be fine for a newbie drive, however I would suggest removing the lower fascia of the front bumper as you can never be too careful in the desert. As much as the leads keep every car in mind during the drive, there are times when if you make a small mistake you may end up with the lower fascia scraping the sand. It is made in a way that it can be removed and put back pretty easily. There are a few videos on YouTube showing how to do it and no additional tools are required.
As far as the paint is concerned, I wouldnt say nothing will happen as the chances of stone chips flying into you from the car in front are higher in the desert than on tarmac. It does not happen very often but I would not say it never will.

@ZakWarah The selec terrain system is pretty good and does exactly what it's supposed to. On the other hand all the safety features the JGC come with are brilliant on tarmac but can be a real pain in the sand. When you use the sand mode, although the system shows traction is off, it is not off 100% and if it senses extra wheel spin it will overwrite the select terrain system and kick in. The only way to completely kill the traction ESC and ABS would be to install a kill switch.
Also note that the transmission on the JGC is adaptive and if you have been driving on tarmac only it recognizes your driving style and you would notice the upshifts happen very fast. The more you start driving in the desert the more the DTCM will learn and it does get better over time with the upshifting. For this in particular, there is no work around, you give it time to learn or you use the manual or paddle shift.
Whenever you go off-road, please remember to pull the airbag fuse. It is very sensitive and can just go off if the sensors detect a 90 degree tilt which is very often when riding dunes.

@Satish Mungse this drive is for newbies and above only. As you have not yet done an absolute newbie drive, please remove your RSVP from this drive and sign up for an absolute newbie drive first.
@Dodi Syahdar I see you have RSVP for this drive and also for the afternoon drive. Please choose any 1 drive for now and you can put your name on the waitlist for a second drive. This would give other drivers a chance to rsvp for atleast 1 drive over the weekend. On Wednesday, if there are still spots available after everyone has got at least 1 drive, you can be added to the convoy for a second drive.

Offroad bumper Fiber glass of Steel ???
in Offroad General Discussion
Posted
@luwaimn if the clips are still holding and the bumper has not come of the body, I'd suggest just trimming it and getting a skid plate. If the clips are broken and it has to be replaced, try getting a second hand one and trim it.
Adding a metal bumper would not only add weight but can also be a problem passing the RTA test. You would have to put the rubber blocks on it for it to pass.
