  2. Dear Desert Champions, Here is the update on what to expect on the 19 Nov 2021 to identify the real champions (team). Based on my off-roading experience since 2006 in participating and designing such events, I like to share my two cents before revealing the plan to set the tone. For the sake of winning, of course, only one team will win, but for me personally, all participants will be true champions: If you can complete the whole course "safely" without any damage or accidents. If you can control your temptations, frustration, anger and rise above the game. If you can think it through in most difficult situations and still keep moving. If you can continue to keep a "razor-sharp" focus all the time consistently. If you can strike a balance as a good team player with sporting spirit. Revealing the Game Plan. All teams will be given 5-way points to cover however they like to target and approach. Roughly as per the below plan (almost finalized). Red is the starting point. You can start from left, right or center, however, you wish if it's more approachable, doable, less treacherous, less monstrous, less technical etc. No matter how well you plan in the beginning, you and your lead will always have to re-align the focus as per moving target to go with dunes construction, topography and sizes. So you will have lots and lots of fun at every waypoint to talk, discuss, and gather your thoughts as a good team does (sometimes). No masking tapes are allowed. These all points have been strategically positioned to cause "immense" confusion and temptations with endless permutations and combinations to test each team's strength and mental readiness of true champions. You are free to run any military-grade, tactical, navigational devices, apps and gadgets to find the shortest, sweetest path. Please remember it's just a fun and entertaining event to celebrate a true desert champion in you or in somebody else, so please keep it happy, keep it safe and keep it healthy.

  3. Dear @Muhammad Qasim that is correct, and we would wish nothing more than members joining us for multiple drives every weekend, but due to the exponential growth of the club in the last 1 year we have implemented a "single drive" policy when booking your slot on Sunday evening. (in the past, people would click and rsvp on multiple drives, while other members lose out on their chance to have one drive in the weekend). Below message is also being published every week on the Whatsapp Notification Group: SINGLE DRIVE REQUEST To prevent all drives from getting full on Sunday by multiple RSVP, we would like to request everyone to please RSVP ONE DRIVE (for the weekend: Friday and Saturday) initially and then RSVP your second or third drive from Wednesday onward, please. Sun - Tuesday - Limiting one drive per member (For the weekend drives: Friday and Saturday). Wednesday onward - RSVP on multiple drives are open. P.S. You can waitlist your name anytime for multiple drives too, like below. Example: Gaurav - Second drive waitlist. PS usually all trip leads stick to the max convoy size, as extending beyond 15-16 cars creates extra challenges. But wherever we see that waitlisted members did not get the chance to confirm for a single drive yet we always do our best to provide them a spot.

  12. Hope this helps: Option 1: 70 Mail / Garmin or other Advantages: Records in 2.7k Video that one can crop without loss for 1080p videos Has Decent Night Mode Decent Wide Angle Video as well Its your normal Dash Cam that you are re-purposing it for action cam - always present in your car and always recording. Latest Gen 70mail records GPX data as well so if you want to overlay that in your video you can do it as well Heat resistant - I have never seen my camera stop because of heat (a. because of the smaller sensor, b. no battery c. the way they are made). Cheaper than other video cameras (bar repurposed phones) No need to remember to record anything - no planning needed Disadvantages You wont get 4k Video and not too good optics. fixed place to mount - only one on the dash Single purpose use. Mine does not capture gpx data so I use Gaia data to overlay on my videos (if I ever do it that is) Dash cams don't show the action as well as an action cam can, somehow I feel they show the video slower than they are. Option 2: GopPro/Sony/DJI Action Cams Advantages Higher Resolution up to 4k Better Optics & image stabilization plus upto 240 fps or timelapse recording GPX data recoding and easy to overlay on videos Can be mounted on many different locations and they are generally waterproof using cases. You can use it for other than drives as well. Possibility to live telecast on social media with some devices (gopro does it). Disadvantages More expensive compared to a dash cam also you end-up buying into the whole ecosystem. Gets hot quickly and in summer it might stop working You have to remember to record and have to plan according to your drive. Option 3: Repurposed Phones (Jugad) Advantages You already have it - no cost you can use your current phone as well. Decent quality of video and if the phone is not too old it will do 4k, Slowmo and Timelapse as well You can live broadcast on to social media for your drive. Disadvantage If it is your daily driver you may get some unexpected calls which will stop recording (no issue if it is unused) You need to securely mount it inside the car (same as dashcam) plus it will be more obstructive for the view than dashcam It has batteries and they get hot soon. In summer my iPhone gets hot and stops working if it is mounted on the windscreen. You have to remember to record as well. I have all of the above and I use all of them. My first preference still be Dash Cam for value for money and convenience point of view. They wont be the best but they are there when you need it. The logical way to go is to use your phone first then get a dash cam and finally an action cam. In DashCams I prefer 70mail they are not too expensive and work well and in the newer models they record front and back. In Action Cams - I will recommend the latest GoPro it gets refreshed every year with new features being added. DJI has come up with a new lineup you want to check. Sony - they had good action cams but have seen a refresh in the near past. You might be able to grab a 2nd hand one if you can for all of the above as well.

  13. I recently got a DJI Osmo Action (the first version) and it is a really good action camera and does a good job on stabilization on the dashboard. Fully agree to @Looper's assessment. My camera did get hot on some instances. Also they are good if you want to do short bust videos (my personal preference) instead of longer videos that might need to be edited. @Ilya agree to the point on 4K. Videos look much nicer on bigger screens. Easier to boast to friends n family

  14. The best ones are obvious - GoPro 10 and Insta 360 for 360. All other, of course, will miss some features but will be of course, cheaper. iPhone video is also superb I wouldn't underestimate 4K. If you plan to show your video on a large TV (from youtube), 4K will be much much sharper than full HD. Also capturing with 60fps is a must for action scenes, not 30/24 fps

  15. I'm extremely sorry @Frederic but I need to drop out. I've been so inspired by your Oman forum posts that I'm planning to go discover them this weekend. This is what a bittersweet moment looks like. But I'm sure the waitlisted members will be very happy.

  20. @Muhammad Qasim sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it seems you have already one drive confirmed for this weekend. As per our rules you are only allowed to book into one drive per weekend between Sunday and Tuesday, and from Wednesday onewards we can allow waitlisted members to join in IF places are still available. To keep it fair for the other members who have waitlisted for second drive already, i will need to remove your RSVP. Thanks for understanding. See you soon in the sand.

  28. I would advise you to keep looking , look for car sell from owners and not dealers as much as possible. Select cars with full agency service history- if possible, which can be crosschecked from Toyota at Albadia workshop. Of course with a authorization letter from previous owner. Generally - full agency service maintenance means less mods, (probably less off road usage) and parts replaced with original ones. As the winter season has kicked in , you might have to pay a premium extra for cars common among offroaders - like the FJ, Jeep , Xterra, SWB 3.8 Pajeros and the Y61 patrols.
