  1. Hi @Ahmad Quadri Welcome to the club! To be honest, as your very first Newbie drive, people in the club will be very accomodating. That air compressor you posted won't really be up to the task of inflating all your tires from sand pressures. Just check with someone is okay sharing their air compressor, and if you have a lot of fun and want to do it again, look to get a 'real' compressor. The problem with the one you linked is, unfortunately, it will overheat quickly, and cut out, and the inflating will be slow. Painfully slow. Great for emergency tire changing, not so great for offroad useage. But you also don't want to spend several hundred AED on a decent one until you've even given the hobby a real try ๐Ÿ˜ƒ The flags... many of us have mounting brackets we can buy for our specific vehicle make and models, you can probably just google for your own vehicle. Or get a custum bracket made to fit from a local fabricator. Both are very popular. Another option is suction cups that will suction to your rear windows... this is quite non-intrusive, and maybe a direction you take for your first run. (amazon search: 'desert flag' for a flag and mount). For an absolute first time experience... I would say the non-negotiable items would be a radio, recovery points, and flag. The club can help support in other gear, just check first with the marshall and club members on the drive you sign up for. After that first dip in the pool, if you're excited and keen for more, build up the recommended club gear, but with gear that will do the job (ie, a decent air compressor). Hope this helps!

  3. I finally bought the Michelin LTX Force today and will update the sand review after the Liwa crossing. Below is the key information that I like to share as of now: Tire size: 275/70/R16 Yokohama Geolander - AT: 17.20 Kgs (Half-life used) so 18 Kgs (New). Michelin LTX Force - AT: 19.10 Kgs (New). Michelin XLT - HT: 17 Kgs (New) - Road & Sand friendly but not an AT. I wanted to move away from Geo since G015 didn't live up to the G012 longevity and since all other AT were heavier than Geo so based on that plus based on my previous LTX (now XLT - HT) sand experience, I went with Michelin. They come with 5-year warranty or 70,000 km, so the steep price will be justified eventually.

  4. Dear desert expeditioners/ dune surfers! @Waqas Parvez @ASAD. @Vaibhav @Sunil Mathew @Anoop Nair @munkybizness @Santoso Marjuki @Mario Cornejo @Imran Kashif @Gaurav @Dodi Syahdar @Pacific@Ranjan Das welcome to the Liwa Expeditionary Adventure Drive โ€œLEADโ€ ! We are all looking forward for this weekend with utmost excitement in anticipation of the thrilling adventure ahead! Please ensure that your mean machines are in top condition with any known issues sorted out and tested. I advise you all to be properly rested with sound physical and mental preparedness for this drive. Hence i suggested to avoid long drive on Saturday morning from Dubai to meeting point. i am planning to reach the starting point around 5 pm (while we still have daylight) on Friday and then find a suitable camping spot. Hi Anoop, I believe that you would be joining the drive..

  5. @Gaurav, I've also switched over to the Michelin LTX Force ATs recently. I've done a lot of highway driving with them taking them to Liwa in December, and a fun-run through the Yellow Truck area. They were pretty capable overall. I'm running the 275/65/R17 variant. On road, I definitely find them to be about the same noise as the Geolandar GO15s, but less stickier after warm-ups than the Geos. Through corners, a warmed up set of Geos would hold a cleaner line than the Michelins. I've noticed that the LTX brakes much better though. Off road, the sidewall flexes much lesser than the GO15s on the Y61, which even at 13psi would sometimes look they were almost flat. But the flex is still a lot more aggressive than those that I've seen on Cooper AT3 4S and BFG KO2s. Visually, I find the Michelins appear taller than they are. It's probably because the shoulders of the Geos were a bit more rounded than the Michelins. Currently, I have no complaints but I've barely given them about 1,000kms of run-in. Let's swap notes in Liwa

  7. Hi Everyone Just registered myself here - been a part since 2020 and really never was able to decide to actually test the waters. Finally Happy to take the plunge. I have put myself on the waitlist for "Morning Newbie Desert Drive - Flavours of Faqa - Dubai - 21 Jan 2023" . Don't think I will get the opportunity though. Already 9 more people on the waitlist. Maybe next time. I was going through the a lot of reading material on the site and its absolutely amazing ( thank you for that). I understand that on the first drive an absolute must is to have your own tyre deflater and inflater. Any recommendations? I can see a lot of options on Amazon but not sure which one to pick. Any suggestions would definitely help. The one I saw and liked was https://www.amazon.ae/gp/product/B09W8SMB6R/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1?smid=A1RQBI3BED2YVU&psc=1 - any comments on this one if anyone has used this one? Also for the flag pole - Where can I get one and how does that fix into the car ? Appreciate any guidance here.

  9. Hi everyone! Thanks @Frederic for questions. Yes , indeed this is my first time being behind the wheel for a desert drive:) I was a passenger a few times previously - that was truly great so decided to try myself. Summary: 1) Jeep Wrangler 2011 ( 2 doors) 2) Only passenger experience 3) Yes, car has all necessary equipment since it participated in multiple carnity desert drives. Excited to meet everyone on Saturday and will definitely watch the shared video.

  12. Tire shop said the same thing, if spare is always covered and never used, years doesnt matter that much as it's the usage that depletes the rubber life and quality. So keeping G012 back where it was. Thanks guys.

It has been been a very long time .almost more than a year and a half or more since you drove with carnity regardless of the level and as a matter or Intermediate level And as from your profile you did the only one IM drive in April 2021. for your own safety I highly recommend you not to join such level and instead join a lower in difficulty level like Newbie or maximum fewbie level couple of times till you become synchronised back with your vehicle to the sand driving . There is no place I am afraid to take any high risk please . Please I am afraid to ask you to remove your self from this drive . I hope you can understand. Thank you ๐Ÿ™

  18. Vulcanized rubber to get deteriorated takes a lot of time. I have read all the comments here. The reason for the tire to get cracked after years is due to ply separation. Rubber compound when masticated with chemicals to become a tire compound has oil also added to it. After years the oil starts to evaporate making the tire more brittle. Also when the tire is vulcanized in the tire mould the outer parts of the tire get more heat and vulcanizes more. The inner parts of the tire where the ply's are arranged are not vulcanized fully as heat reaches there less. So a tire which has aged is more likely to fail as the bond between the ply's gets weaker after years. Another reason is the addition of synthetic rubber in tires. Synthetic rubber is added to the compound to give it more abrasion resistance. But if u have stock of old synthetic rubber, you see that the tensile strength of the rubber has deteriorated a lot and if u pull it will just tear off. I can say this with 100% confidence as I had a rubber mastication unit which was handed over to me through generations. @gaurav I would keep the 50% tread life tire and throw the 6 year old tire in the garbage.

  20. Insta 360 X2 had a premium lens guard which was removeable (USD 44) but they have not come out for X3 - so it would be interesting to see how it works. Will wait for user reviews of other uses before going in for this one. The lens guard is most important for all the sand that keeps hitting the camera. I always mount the screen side facing back so that it won't get scratched. There is a scratch on my lens guard already and you will be able to notice in a few of the videos.

  22. Typical age of rubber until it starts degrading is about 5-7 years depending on how well it is stored.. spares kept outside the car.. underneath the chassis or hung on the boot door tends to degrade faster even if they are protected from direct sunlight (UV). They may seem good from an outside view but tend to be degraded inside.. i once used a spare wheel after about 5 years and in about 500 kms the cracks started to appear on the shoulder
    2 points
  23. I would vote for the tyre that has had the least amount of UV or heat exposure. If the 2017 one has seen little to no sun, i would expect the rubber compound integrity to be better. Some telltale signs of ageing could be colour fade and small micro-cracks in the rubber. What is rubber deterioration? Most elastomers undergo rubber degradation over time and the most common rubber deterioration causes are exposure to light, oxygen (ozone) and heat. The molecular changes brought about by these environmental conditions can significantly impact the mechanical properties and therefore service life of rubber products like seals and O-rings. Oxidative and thermal ageing of rubber are accelerated by stress and reactive gases, like ozone, resulting in cracking, charring and colour fading. However, the addition of antioxidants, UV stabilisers and antiozonates can slow or prevent these types of issues. Oxidative rubber degradation can cause hardening or softening, depending on the structure of the elastomer. Hardening is more common because free radicals produced due to heat, oxygen and light combine to form new crosslinks, which reduces the flexibility of the rubber.

  24. @Looper @Waqas Parvez @Vaibhav @DP1011 , Deepak wrangler thank you guys for all your insights. well - my kids and wifey surprised me with an X3 (Insta360) and not the car on my birthday. now i need to start looking for the accessories to get it ready for my next drive. i have noticed that the suction mounts (ones with 3 suction mounts) are most probably best suited for the off-roading; i am still deciding whether to have it mounted on the side (as all of you guys do) or on the sunroof (yes - i have a sunroof). which product do you recommend for the mounts? @Looper i will go through your above list in Insta360 website and try to buy these. anything i need to know gents before i starting digging through my wallet? thanks

  29. well it's now over 48hrs, and I did go to the doctor per @Gaurav & @Srikumar's recommendation. Doc said since no vomitting, no broken ribs, no blurry vision and no pain whatsoever, she declared me fit to drive & work again ๐Ÿ™‚ I would rather focus on the positive things and the good lucks, so here they are: alhamdulillah I managed to return home unharmed, thanks to every single one in the convoy, I pray God bless you all for your kindness. thanks to my trip marshal @Srikumar for leading the team during the incident. There were other younger blood he could direct & delegate to, but he chose to unroll his sleeves and in the process hit his head against my rear bumper (luckily it's stock fibre... imagine if it's the Y62 with 4mm steel ๐Ÿ˜ฑ) it was good luck @Haitham Khattab pushed himself to join the drive eventhough he overslept and started driving at 5:30am. For his presence helped a lot, as we needed an Arabic speaker to translate and bridge the communication with the police. i had a nice recovery driver who shared me his Naan & vegetables lunch in short, eventhough it was an unfortunate incident, I am thankful and happy with the people who surrounded me & helped. Thanks for asking @Tom B @Rob S @ASAD. , not my first rollover with perfect landing on all 4 wheels, so the shocks were subdued a bit ๐Ÿ˜…, but nevertheless humbles and amazes me how we're given second..eh i mean... fourth chance. My wife reminded to watch the latest Puss in the Boots movie ๐Ÿ˜‚ And this is the finale good news: only Windshield (500dhs second-hand) + Front Right Fender (300dhs second-hand) + Front Right Passenger Door (300dhs second-hand) are badly damaged. According to the Denting Specialist, the roof can be fixed without replacing the whole roof. I'll probably start a thread on the LC 10K bring-to-life restoration project ๐Ÿ˜„

  30. Previously I was on the fence about buying an action-cam for recording drives. I already had a Sony FDR 3000 4K, but I rarely used it. Dashcam footage from my 70mai seemed good enough. However, dashcam footage just accumulated, having stored 100+ drives footage on my NAS and I did nothing except edit a couple of drives which involved removing the stucks and refusals. It is difficult to get action footage from a 3-hour long drive and one needs professional video editing software to make it look better and cut to aspect ratios for social media shares. Looking at all the social media it was clear that 360 camera was the way to go. Luckily for me when I finally decided to take a plunge, Insta 360 launched their new X3. I did look at GoPro Max but decided against it because of two reasons. The camera has not been updated in some time now, it is more than 3 years old now. I hate the entire subscription model in GoPro world, and Insta 360 has a great app as well. How does it fare with GoPro 11 or DJI Action 3? Many who want to buy this camera would also consider a GoPro or DJI Action 3. They are both good cameras and they both have a slight advantage in the single lens camera department. If you need high frame rates GoPro or DJI Action 3 are necessary. The use case for them vis a vis Insta 360 X3 is different. For off-road driving, 360 will be more useful since we donโ€™t have to worry about reframing the camera toward the direction of the action as it keeps shifting. If you have seen social media the 360 seems to be the default way to go for showing off-road driving. Plus, Insta X3's me mode and Single lens mode do what those action cams will do while removing the need for any reframing. How does it compare with Insta360 One X2? If you already have an X2, it will do 90% of what X3 does. But if you are looking at buying a new one then X3 makes a lot more sense. X3โ€™s new two-inch screen is a substantial upgrade from X2. X3 has a better sensor at 1/ 2" compared to 1/ 2.5โ€ on the X2. X3 has a f/1.9 aperture compared to f/2.0 on X2. X3 also records 4k 30 while X2 can only do 2.7k 30 on single lese. Both will do 5.7k on dual lease. Where to buy? I will suggest buying the action-cam and the initial accessories kit directly from the Insta 360 website, for a couple of reasons: you will be able to buy Insta360 Care that protects you from accidental damage, and they repair your camera and cover the shipping both ways, and a 2year extended warranty while you buy the camera. you will be able to buy more accessories and in my case some of them were cheaper on their website. Because it was recently launched few are available on Amazon. How much does it cost? It is cheaper in the US at USD 449, but when you order online to UAE it is EUR 529. They do have some bundles, but they cost the same as the sum of parts. How long does it take to reach here? It gets shipped in a day or two from China and will be delivered in about a week time. What Accessories to buy? Insta360 X3 Sticky Lens Guards: Protection for both your lenses. Sticks directly on the lens to safeguard from dust and scratches. Insta360 X3 Lens Cap: Extra, all-round protection for your lenses. You can use it when in the field, but you are not actively using the camera. Otherwise, I assume you would keep it in a protective case. Extra Insta360 X3 Battery: Have at least one extra. It comes in a small box. Fast Charge Hub: If you want to charge multiple batteries at the same time. Invisible Selfie Stick: You have three options. 70 cm, 120 cm and a combination of tripod extending to 105 cm. There is an extended edition selfie stick that as well can be extended to 300 cm. Bullet Time Accessory: You have two options. There is a bullet time cord which is cheaper and a Tripod that can be attached to the invisible selfie stick. GPS Smart Remote: While initially I did not recommended but the new version of GPS remote is a very good option and recommended to be bought along with the camera. Other items to consider depending on your usage: There are a lot more items available such as Insta360 X3 Quick Reader, Mic Adaptor, Utility Frame, Quick Release Mount that works with GoPro Accessories. Vibration Damper, and many kits that seemed irrelevant to me but your milage will vary. Things to avoid from Insta360: Insta360 X Series Carry Case: It fits only 70 cm stick and a battery box. Many other accessories you might have would not fit in it so suggest going for a third-party case from Amazon. Memory Card: On amazon for far less cost, and a lot more storage.

  31. For any type of off road driving in the UAE you need to reduce your 4x4 tire pressure. For mountains and wadi it's easy to reduce between 20-25 PSI irrespective of the tire brand, shape, type and load. For sand the tire pressure deflation is little bit tricky and if you follow below steps, you can decode this better. Before that you also need to understand that why deflation for off road driving is so important: Deflated tires are hard to sink in or dig in the sand due to lesser resistance. Deflated tires increase the sand flotation to reduce the load on Engine, 4x4 and Transmission. By deflating tire pressure you increase the footprint, that help you stabilize & offer better directional control. Image shows the two tires track: One with 35 PSI (left) and other with 12 PSI (right). Finding a perfect tire pressure for off road driving for your specific tire and 4x4 is based on bit of learning and experiments. Of course the lower the tire pressure better it is for dune bashing, climbing and self recoveries but too low is also dangerous for popping the tire out of its wheel. You can follow the below chart, if you are totally new to off road driving as an indication (ONLY). If you have a pop out on normal driving, then increase 1 PSI next time to find the best tire pressure for your 4x4. If your 4x4 is Long Wheel Base (LWB) with full load then increase 1-2 PSI more than below indications. Type/Brand of Tire Regular Driving Intermediate Driving Self-Recovering All HT Tread (Highway Tread) Dunlop Grandtrek Bridgestone Dueler Yoko Geolander HT Michelin Latitude Pirelli Scorpion Goodyear HT 14 PSI 12 PSI (Avoid sharp steering) 8-10 PSI (Inflate after recovery) All MT Tread (Mud Terrain Tread) Mickey Thompson MT BF Goodrich MT Cooper STT - MT Nitto Trail Grappler MT Toyo Open Country MT Dick Cepek Extreme 12 PSI 10 PSI (Avoid sharp steering) 6-8 PSI (Inflate after recovery) All AT Tread (All Terrain Tread) Yoko Geolander AT Michelin Pilot A/S3 Hankook Dynapro 10-12 PSI 8-10 PSI (Avoid sharp steering) 4-6 PSI (Inflate after recovery) Disclaimer: If you can't find your tire brand in the list then rely on HT / MT / AT section to be 90% safe. For knowing how to deflate the tires, please speak to any of the Marshal or senior member to show you how its done properly. There are more than a couple of ways and tools off-roaders use to deflate depending on their choices. All tools, ways and method are correct as far as you achieve the correct tire pressure. If you are new to offroading, I highly suggest to double check the tire pressure twice once you are done. Borrow the fellow offroader tire pressure gauge and check again, as many times your new gauge might go wonky and give false readings. Once you are 100% sure that your gauge is correct always, then you are fine to rely on your own readings. PLEASE DON'T DEFLATE WITH KEY AND STOPWATCH AND ASSUME IT'S 14 PSI. Secondly, always check / adjust tire pressure again after 30 minutes of sand driving as it might increase due to the heat and stress. If you are facing constant refusal at the beginning of any drive, I bet your 14 PSI has shot up to 18 PSI and you need to reduce the tire pressure more to bring it down to 14 PSI. This happens on almost every newbie drive, so it's fine and proven gazillions of time.

I hear you completely and it absolutely makes sense - Since i am just starting out , i dont want to do what i did with my gym ( Paid for full year, got gym clothes , etc etc - went only for two days) - But i think once i get it in my system and think this is something i will do long term then it makes sense to invest. Also i am not sure how my car will behave in the sand - i have LandRover LR2 2012 model - this is another reason for me now take the plunge - till now this was my only car - in a week it will be my second car. The car is in good condition and works like a charm on road. but from what i have read here , it different in the desert.

  46. Driving off-road is a very interesting and entertaining experience but there are a few basic things you need to check first before heading for your first off-road drive with Carnity Off-road Club. Every driver should know when to join for an offroad drive and when to pass until all below things are checked. VEHICLE Ground clearance: Minimum 8 inches under front and rear bumper is must. You will need to be careful while driving and slow down while descent and approach to avoid any minor bumper damage. If your 4x4 have EAS (electronic suspension), lift it to the max height and then measure it. Also read the manual to know what is the max speed you can drive with off-road height, as many manufacturer limit up to 60 Kmph with off-road height, which is plenty in most cases. Knowing that limit is better in case you go above that speed, so you can lift it again once you slow down. Tow hook: Your 4x4 should have at least 1 tow hook in the front and 1 tow hook at the back, more the better. Also you should check the integrity of all tow hooks and its appearance, if they are shaking or rusted or missing a bolt, then get them fixed before joining any off-road drive. Engine: Your engine should be in perfect working condition without any check engine light or any warning lights on dashboard or leaking oil or coolant. Engine takes more stress while off-roading so well serviced 4x4 performs better on off-road. If you recently bought the car and have no idea of last service, then it's highly advisable to get the engine service before your first off-road drive. Gear / Transmission: Your 4x4 should have 4L and 4H gearing option. AWD or SUV without LO/HI gearing option are not advisable for sand off-roading. Suspension: Your 4x4 vehicle suspension should be in reasonable and drivable condition. You can drive with stock suspension perfectly fine and then you can decide to modify it, if really needed. Any suspension lifted up to 2-3 inches are accepted, anything above 3 inches lift need trip leader approval before joining any drive to make sure if you have widened the wheelbase to lower the center of gravity in an orderly manner. Tires: Your 4x4 tires should be in good condition with enough tread and more than half life left. Tires nearing their end usually fail while off-roading, so check for date of manufacturing shouldn't be more than 3-4 years. No visible cuts or lost tread chunks or cracking sidewall should be there. Fuel Tank: You should always join the off-road drive with full fuel tank, as all vehicles consume double or triple the amount of fuel while off-roading. You don't need to change the fuel type from special to super for off-road purpose, continue with your fuel type as per manufacturers recommendation. Sign up: Once you have checked all these above points then RSVP the drive calendar and post an introductory message on the drive post - sharing your 4x4 details, previous off-road experience (if any), so that trip lead can acknowledge and plan the drive accordingly. OFF-ROAD GEAR You don't need any off-road gear or recovery gears for your first off-road drive, but if you have a shovel, flag and a radio (walkie talkie) then please carry it with you. Rest all the off-road gears and recovery tools will be shown to you once you attend the briefing and you can read more about them here: https://carnity.com/advice/offroad/most-comprehensive-list-of-off-road-gears-and-recovery-tools-r81 OFF-ROAD DRIVE Always wear long pants and closed shoes (no slippers) to avoid any injury or sun burn. Carry hat/cap/scarf, in case you need to spend long time under the sun. Carry plenty of water and soft drinks of your choice to keep you hydrated. Carry your camera mounts if you like to record the drive (no hand held). No carrying or consumption of any type of alcoholic drinks on the drive.

  47. For safer off-roading, we request every off-roader to follow these mandatory safety requirements. Failing to abide by these mandatory safety requirements = NOT ALLOWED TO DRIVE. Your safety is our top priority but ultimately it is YOUR responsibility. Seat Belt: is the most important safety feature in every car. It is illegal not to wear and is of paramount importance when off-roading. Seat belts constantly protect you from bumps and jumps during the drive. Everyone in your car should be wearing a seat belt at all times - without any exception, excuse or reasoning. Driver, passengers, guests, family, friends, kids everyone should wear a seat belt at all times. It's the driver's ultimate responsibility to make sure everyone is wearing a seat belt at all times. Failing to abide - even once - you will be banned forever from Carnity off-road club. All children should be sitting on age-specific child/kids/booster seats with the seat belt fastened. Nobody should lean outside the windows or sunroof from a moving vehicle for any reason. You can only accommodate maximum passengers, as much as the seat belts available in your vehicle. If you walk across to help to recover a car and then jump in another offroader car for reaching back to your car, please wear a seat belt even if your car is one dune away. If your car breaks down or is stuck and you join another offroader car, please wear a seatbelt at all times. Secure loose objects: Everything should be strapped and secured in your vehicle before you start the off-road drive. All off-road gear- Shovel, Jack, Board, Compressor, Fire extinguishers etc. should be either fully strapped with strong tie-down ratchet (no bungee cords and no spider net) or a boot partition should be installed with molle panels, dog guard, boot divider mesh or flexible straps. This is to prevent any off-road gear from freely moving in the cabin space and potentially causing a fatal injury during off-road bumps or any unforeseen accident. No camping gear, chairs, boxes or wood should be kept loose in your car boot. Clear Visibility and Focus: While off-roading, driver should have clear visibility and focus. Anything that blocks the clear visibility should be removed immediately from your car e.g. excessive front wind-shield tinting, loose sun-visor, etc. You should immediately stop driving off-road during sandstorms, foggy conditions, or any other natural conditions that hamper visibility to continue. Check and/or replace your wiper blades every month, as rubber degrades with time and if your wiper is not cleaning the windshield properly it may block your visibility. All distractions from passengers, music, phone calls, etc. should be avoided while off-roading.

  48. Every offroad convoy has to follow these rules to keep moving the whole convoy safely at all times: Follow the car in front of you all the time. And also follow the path taken by that car (STRICTLY), until you learn to lead. As an occasional exception, if you see the car in front of you struggled or churn up the path, it is advisable to drive little left or right and then follow the same path again. Keep 5-10 cars distance all the time. Keeping it too close you will risk an accident and keeping it too long, you will lose the path. If you cannot see the car behind you, please stop and notify on the radio so that the leader can stop until they all catch up. Stick to your convoy numbering at all times, if changed due to some situation fall back to the same order as soon as you can but safely. If convoy is not moving due to some stuck / refusal, please be patient and stay safe at your designated position. No playing, side sloping or any breaking the convoy activities will not be tolerated. Radio communication is PRIME, listen and respond to it promptly all the time. Convoy positions Leader: The first car who leads the drive and everyone has to follow the leader instructions precisely with respect. Second lead: The second car in a convoy, who drives behind the leader and avoid or fix any unforeseen situation as it may happen. Everyone in the convoy needs to follow the "second lead" path like a magnet - at all times. Sweep: One or two cars at end of the convoy to help and recover stuck vehicles or advise the correct path after the refusal. Flying Sweep: This car can be anywhere to do the sweep duties of recovering stuck vehicle or coordinating the convoy movement.
